OBITUARIES | Death Notices & Funerals GARLAND CHALLENOR Garland “Buttons” Lee Challenor, of Mechanicsville, passed away suddenly on June 13, 2016. He is preceded in death by his father, Garland H. CHALLENOR Challenor; stepmother, Elizabeth W. Challenor; and his brother, Timmy Challenor. He is survived by his loving wife of 49 years, Brenda O. Challenor; daughters and sons-in-law, Stacy Payne, Angie and Mike Anthony, Kristy and Wade West, Amanda and Phillip Ogden; 12 grandchildren, Ashley, Jonathan, Jesse, Clayton, Gracie, Isabella, Ross, Corinne, Collin, Lily, Kaylee and Reid; mother, Phyllis H. Fahed; mother-in-law, Colleen Oliver; brothers, Pat Challenor, Luke Challenor, Jody Fahed and Michael
Fahed; sisters, Kathy Miller, Cindy Millikin, Laurie Meade, Robin Ballowe and Tomme Jo Shaw; and many other extended family and friends. Buttons proudly served his country in the Vietnam War as a member of the United States Army. He was a retired iron worker after 43 years of service with Local Union 28. He also was proud of his years spent with Dominion Virginia Power. He was an avid fishermen, loved his garden, and his basset hound Jake. Funeral services were held at 11 a.m. Saturday, June 18, 2016, in the chapel at Monaghan Funeral Home at 7300 Creighton Parkway in Mechanicsville. Interment followed in Hanover Memorial Park.
WALTER B. HARVIE III Walter B. III, 76, of Mechanicsville, went to be with his Lord Thursday, June 16, 2016. He was preceded in death by his parents, Ann H. Day and Walter B. Harvie Jr.; son, Charles W. Harvie; and his wife of 55 years, Frances M. Harvie. Walter is sur-
vived by three children, W. Lee Harvie (Lisa McGinnis), Robert W. Harvie (Darlene) and Elizabeth H. Fisher (Leon); 11 grandchildren, Joey and Jessica Harvie, Jordan, Kyle, Samantha, Kaleb, Bryce and Jessica Fisher, Jennifer and Nicole Deane and Sabrina Ladd; eight greatgrandchildren, HARVIE Tyler, T.J., Cody, Bryleigh, Jayden, Bryce, William and Cameron; two brothers, James R. Gregory (Ellen) and Charles M. Gregory; as well as several nieces and nephews. He was retired from AT&T after 40 years of service and a member of Mechanicsville Baptist Church. Walter was Past Master of Washington and Henry Lodge #344 AF & AM, Past Patron of the OES, and was a member of the ACCA Temple Clown Unit.

ALYCE LANE Alyce Jean Lane, 93, of Mechanicsville, passed away Saturday, June 18, 2016. She was preceded in death by her husband, Thomas F. Lane, and daughter, Kimberly F. Lane. She is survived by her children, their families, grandchildren, and great-grandchildren. A graveside service will be held at 11 am Monday, June 27, 2016, at Signal Hill Memorial Park.
ROBERT POTTER Robert Lewis Potter, SMSGT USAF Retired, age 82, of Warsaw, the husband of Harriette M. Potter, died on June 12, 2016. Mr. Potter was a member of the Calvary United Methodist Church in Emmerton and was a past Chairman of the Administrative Board. He also held other positions in the church. He was a member of VFW POTTER Post 7167 and served as its Commander from 2006 through 2011. Mr. Potter also was a member of the Callao Royal Order of the Moose
and the Air Force Sergeant Association, and was past President of the Folly Neck Hunt Club. Robert loved deer hunting and had a number of deer dogs which he claimed were the best in the country. He also loved NASCAR and dirt track racing at Virginia Motor Speedway. Mr. Potter entered the United States Air Force in December 1951 and retired in March 1975 with the rank of Senior Master Sergeant. During his service, he saw duties in Korea in 1952 and throughout Southeast Asia from 1967 through 1970. Robert received many awards and decorations, including the Meritorious Service Medal for his service in Southeast Asia from December 24, 1967, to December 1970. He received a second Meritorious Service Medal with First Oak Leaf Cluster for Outstanding Service as non-commission officer in charge of Record Communication Division HQ TAC Communications Area at Langley Air Force Base in Virginia from December 30, 1970, to February 28, 1975. Upon his retirement from the Air Force, Mr. Potter went to work with the Virginia Department of Corrections, retiring in 1995 as a Lieutenant. He is survived by his wife, Harriette M. Potter; a son, Robert E. Potter, and his wife, Virginia; three daughters, Linda A. Sokol of Warsaw, Sharron M. Hart and husband, David, of Sandston, and Patsy C. Edwards and husband, Roger, of Mechanicsville; six grandchildren; two stepgrandchildren; two great-grandsons; and three great-granddaughters. Robert was preceded in death by his mother and father, Cline and Booker Potter, and a granddaughter, April
Marie “Sweet” Hart. Funeral services were held at 11 a.m. Wednesday, June 15, 2016, at the Calvary United Methodist Church. Interment followed in the church cemetery. KATHLEEN SCHWERDTFEGER Kathleen V. Schwerdtfeger, 91, of Mechanicsville, went to be with her Lord and Savior, Jesus Christ, on Tuesday, June 14, 2016. Kathleen was a member of Hope Community Church of the Nazarene. She was preceded in death by her husband, J. Charles Schwerdtfeger. Kathleen is survived by her children, Charles (Judy), Claudine (Michael), William (Debra) and Betty (Ronnie); eight grandchildren, 14 great-grandchildren; and siblings, Carlton and Betty Gay.
