McGhee hosts Ag Expo in Hanover Contributed Report news@mechlocal.com About 1,800 farmers, agriculture industry professionals and interested parties gathered on Thursday, Aug. 2, at the 2012 Virginia Ag Expo at Chuck McGhee’s Grainfield Farm in Hanover County. This year’s theme, “Virginia Agriculture: Rich in History — Focused on the Future,” served as a reminder for members “to reflect on our achievements and successes,
while being mindful of how innovation can ensure our future success.” The event included the latest farm equipment, seed demonstration plots and the newest in agriculture technology. As Virginia’s largest producer event, the Ag Expo provides educational opportunities and serves as an essential networking tool. Growers and consumers have the opportunity to discuss and learn more about available services and products.
‘Are You Ready?’ training offered If disaster strikes, are you and your family ready? Hanover County is offering a series of free Community Disaster Preparedness Training Classes called “Are You Ready?” The next class will be held from 6 to 8 p.m. on Wednesday, Sept. 12, at the Mechanicsville Library at 7431 Sherwood Crossing Place in Mechanicsville. The two-hour program will help you to have an awareness of what to do and how to be
informed about hazards and emergencies that may affect you and your family if there is a disaster. It will focus on how you and your family can become self reliant for three days by getting a kit, making a plan, and staying informed. Representatives from the Sheriff ’s Office, Fire/EMS, the Health Department, Social Services, Public Schools and Public Information present the free program. To sign up, call 804-365-4822.
“It is important to showcase and support the strength of Virginia agriculture and its crucial role in our lives. The Virginia Ag Expo allows the opportunity for anyone to experience the fun and complexity of providing food, feed, and fuel. America enjoys the safest, most abundant food supply in the world thanks to our producers, our technologies and our industry innovation. That is something to be celebrated.” said Phil Hickman, president of the Virginia Grain Producers Association.
Hanover Cares has online survey Hanover Cares (the former I CARE Coalition) is conducting an online survey of Hanover County residents between 18 and 24 years old. The survey seeks information on general patterns of alcohol use, the perception of risk of drinking and of driving after drinking, and the availability of alcohol. The survey, completely anonymous, is part of the Virginia Strategic Prevention
Framework State Incentive Grant (SPF SIG) received by Hanover Cares earlier this year. The grant hopes to reduce motor vehicle crashes involving alcohol and drivers who are 15 to 24 years old. The first 300 responses will be entered into a random drawing for an iPad3. Go to www.surveymonkey.com/s/HanoverYAS or the Hanover Cares web page at www.hanover-cares.org.
