Rotary fundraiser to aid ‘Families of Wounded Fund’ Contributed Report news@mechlocal.com Eukonkanto 2010, a Finnish term translated as “wife carrying race,” will be presented on Saturday, June 12, by the Rotary Club of Mechanicsville at The Meadow Event Park (new Virginia State Fairgrounds) in Doswell. “Families of the Wounded Fund,” www. fotwf.org, will be the primary beneficiary of the fundraiser. The organization provides financial resources in support of family members/caregivers of military service men and women who have either been wounded in combat operations or injured as the result of line-of-duty activities in support of combat operations. The 501(c)(3) charity uses funds for lodging, meals, transportation, healthcare, child care, long distance phone calls, and a variety of miscellaneous needs by these family members/caregivers while they are attending to their loved ones. Beneficiary distribution is as follows: 60 percent to Families of the Wounded (taxexempt); 20 percent to Rotary Club of Mechanicsville Foundation to fund local community projects (tax-exempt); 10 percent to Rotary International Foundation (Polio Plus) (tax-exempt); and 10 percent. The club is looking for contestants, with a limit of 50 couples. The entry fee is $250 per couple. Couples are encouraged to seek sponsors from local businesses and community groups.

Checks can be made payable to the Rotary Club of Mechanicsville Foundation, a 501(c)(3). The race is described as a 277-yard obstacle course in which a couple races against the clock to complete the course in the least amount of time. A couple consists of a man who carries his “wife.” Each time the wife touches the ground between the start and finish line, a 15-second penalty is added to the couple’s race time. In Scandinavia, the winning couple wins the wife’s weight in beer. Since it is illegal to offer alcohol as a prize in Virginia, other prizes, equivalent to the wife’s weight, will be offered. The wife’s weight will not be announced. In terms of major sponsors, the Rotary Club of Mechanicsville is organizing the event. Local businesses will sponsor the event and prizes. Sponsorships include: starting line sponsor, $750; log sponsor, $500 (taken); water obstacle sponsor, $500 (taken); sand pit sponsor, $500; finish “event” line sponsor, $750; and weighing device (like a teeter-totter), $750 (taken). For more information on becoming a sponsor, contact Kevin Smyth at kevinsmyth@barreylane.com or call 723-4035. The mailing address for registration and checks is: Eukonkanto 2010, Rotary Club of Mechanicsville, P.O. Box 992, Mechanicsville VA 23111. THE BRAIN-HEALTHY DIET The so-called Mediterranean diet involves eating abundant amounts of fruits/vegetables; olive oil as the principal fat; dairy products; moderate amounts of fish, poultry, and wine; low amounts of red meat; and regular exercise. It has already been found to boost heart health, and now research suggests that the diet may also be linked to less late-life cognitive impairment. This fi nding is based on a study of 1,880 older New York residents. Those who most closely followed a Mediterranean-style diet were at 40% lower risk for developing Alzheimer’s disease over a 5.4-year period than those with the lowest compliance to the diet. This fi nding shows that it is possible to make some non-genetic lifestyle and behavior changes that improve brain function. Research suggests that high cholesterol may contribute to stroke and brain cell damage. A low fat, low cholesterol diet is advisable. And there is growing evidence that a diet rich in dark vegetables and fruits, which contain antioxidants, may help protect brain cells. At HERITAGE GREEN ASSISTED LIVING, our 52-bed fully secured community was specifically designed with our residents’ needs in mind. We provide individualized care and assistance in a homelike setting, while maintaining each resident’s maximum independence. Presented by

P.S. Higher adherence to the Mediterranean diet is also linked to lower mortality and chronic-disease risk.

Via III. “Volunteers are making a difference in Hanover County and for that, we – myself and my fellow Board members – are very grateful.” A live Serviceberry tree was on display at the event. The tree will be planted at the Hanover County Administration Building as a permanent tribute to “Hanover’s People, Tradition and Spirit.” The tree will be a living tribute to all citizens, past and present, that have made Hanover a strong and vibrant place to live through their civic engagement. The planting of this tree also honors the retirement of Assistant County Administrator Marilyn Blake who has served Hanover County for 23 years. Marilyn was Hanover’s first fulltime volunteer coordinator and continued to support the expansion of the program into what is now the Department of Community Resources.
