But the legislative process has been paralyzed, not just slowed down. While an overwhelming majority of Americans might want a particular bill pushed through the Congress, one senator might see fit to run afoul of the national will. This state of affairs is clearly preposterous. The Founding Fathers sought to protect minority rights by giving certain powers to those in Congress in the minority, not to protect the pocketbooks of select congressmen and women. No American, save the particular congressman and his corporate friends, benefits from the polarization that has become a permanent feature of our U.S. Congress. I hope that as my senators, Mark Warner and Jim Webb, will vote on your first day in Washington in 2011 to fix the Senate and get America working again. Daniel Carawan Richmond

The right way to obtain citizenship in the U.S. Our president was very disappointed that the “Dream Act didn’t pass during the lame duck session of Congress. Many people that have been in our country illegally for many years are also disappointed. Many of these “Illegals came to America

as a child and subsequently have attended our schools, have taken advantage of our health care system, and have lived in American homes over these numerous years. These “Illegals are saying that, since they have lived in America for all these years, they should automatically be declared American citizens. I’m sorry to have to report to these “Illegals that this is not the way you attain citizenship in this country, unless you were born here. This is, however, what the “Dream Act would do if it had passed. Our president is only disappointed because these “Illegals, if they could vote, could mean a carload of votes for him in 2012. Nice try, Mr. President, but you will have to try some other underhanded way to get the votes you need. These “Illegals, if they truly desire American citizenship, will have to attain it the correct way through the proper channels as outlined by the State Department. Immigrants, that have gone through this process and have received their citizenship, will tell you that it isn’t easy; but once the oath of allegiance is taken, you are not only a citizen “on paper, but will also feel like a citizen in your heart with a great respect for our country and our Constitution. The defeat of the “Dream Act was, therefore, a victory for these immigrants and all persons who were born in the United States. In other words: a victory for America! Gary Allen Colonial Heights
