Michael ‘Harry’ Connor Stalwart of Meath Hurling Michael ‘Harry’ Connor is a legend in Trim and Meath GAA’s history. He started playing juvenile football and hurling in the early 1960s. He progressed through the grades and by 1970 he was an established member of the senior teams in each code. He was an accomplished footballer and featured in the 1971 campaign that brought the club to the senior semi-final. There they faced the Kilbride side of Quinn renown and lost by two points. Hurling was Harry’s love. He was an established senior hurler as Trim went into the 1970s. Having reached the Intermediate level in 1970, three years later in 1973 Trim were ready to go back senior. Harry was centre-half-back as Trim beat Kells. This was a good team and through the mid 70s Harry was a bulwark at centre half. By this stage Harry had taken over the Under 14 and 16 teams. Slowly but surely Trim worked their way up the ladder. They won a U-14 title in 1976 and U-16 title in 1978. This was the first sign of a revival at U-16 level. Trim won a great tussle with Athboy on a score of 6-04 to 4-09. From that day onwards hurling improved in the town. Harry had a unique way of running the campaigns. He took the sessions in the early stages but as semi-finals and finals approached he got a senior hurler or two to finish off the job. Trim had a great run in the minor grade in 1983 and 84. Harry was assisted by Kevin Murray, Ted Murtagh, Johnny McEvoy, George McCaffrey, Seanie Gantley, Martin Dunne and others. Unfortunately most of these warriors have passed. However they can be proud of the players they turned out. Some of them went to win nine senior championships. Harry witnessed all nine. In the early 1980s Harry was selected to the chair of the Meath Hurling Board. He was very successful as all clubs agreed that he was a fair adjudicator.
Peter Darby presents Michael ‘Harry’ Connor with the first-ever Trim GAA Club Hall of Fame Award
The Trim senior team was making great progress but never won the championship during his reign. Thus he was denied the great honour of presenting the Jubilee Cup to a Trim captain. When Trim won the title in 1987 Harry’s term had ended and Finian Englishby had taken over. It didn’t trouble Harry as he worked behind the scenes during a great era for the club. He was a selector on the senior team throughout this Golden Era for the club. From 1985 to 2001 Trim were always competitive in the championship and Harry was happy as he saw some of his U-14, U-16 and minor players mature into top notch seniors. He was a major force in organising the Féile na nGael tournament. This was and is a wonderful tournament for U-14 hurlers and camogie players. Ironically, Seán Colgan, his cousin, was Hurling Board chairman in the 1990s. Both have been inducted into the club’s Hall of Fame. In later years Harry was to be seen at most hurling and football games the teams played. His health failed him but he fought his illness bravely. Although not well he attended most functions in the clubhouse and was able to attend the function at which he was inducted into the Hall of Fame. He was such a steady hand in the development hurling in Meath and dutifully, so the Man-of-the-Match award is now named after him.

Ratoath bid to be the third double club With Ratoath bidding to add the 2020 Meath Senior Hurling Championship to the Senior Football Championship title already in the bag, let’s look back at the achievements of the two double winners, Navan O’Mahonys in 1985 and Kilmessan in 1939. Skryne were O’Mahonys’ opponents in the 1985 SFC final and the Tara side went into the Páirc Tailteann tussle as hot favourites. After Skryne led by 0-5 to 0-3 at the break, the town team took control in the second half to win by 0-10 to 0-7. Midfielder Joe Cassells was the man-of-the-match, Finian Murtagh and Michael Downes starred in the attack with returns of four and three points respectively while full-back Damien Sheridan was the victorious captain. O’Mahonys qualified for their first SHC final with a ‘semi’ success over Rathmolyon and in the title decider played in wet and windy conditions at St Loman’s Park on the last Sunday of November, Killyon were overcome by 1-8 to 1-6. Favoured by the elements, the Navan side built up a 1-7 to 0-1 interval advantage and then held off a strong Killyon comeback. Dual star Joe Cassells was in top form at midfield alongside Gerry Kelly while another noted exponent of both codes, Ben Tansey, did not join the action until the last 10 minutes because of a back ailment. Sean McKeigue was the winners’ captain and Donal Mitchell was the main marksman with six points. After being presented with the Jubilee Cup, O’Mahony’s had to survive an objection from Killyon, who claimed that their

opponents fielded an ineligible player. However, the appeal was unsuccessful and the Brews Hill club celebrated a famous feat. The O’Mahonys teams in the finals were: Football - Donal Smyth; Brian Smith, Damien Sheridan, Donal Finnegan;Brendan Murray, Brian Reilly, Timmy Creavin; Joe Cassells, DavidBeggy; Gary O’Hare, Eamon Dunphy, Michael Downes; Finian Murtagh, BenTansey, Davy Nelson. Sub - Paul Mallon for O’Hare. Hurling - Paul Matthews; Fergus Duffy, Liam Galavan, Noel Quirke;Philip Ward, Brendan Ryan, Mick Dinneen; Joe Cassells, Gerry Kelly;Donal Mitchell, Justin McCarthy, Mick Flynn; Tom Kinsella, Simon Murphy, Sean McKeigue. Sub -Ben Tansey for Duffy. The first part of Kilmessan’s 1939 double was achieved of that year when their hurlers defeated Trim by 1-5 to 1-3 in wet conditions at Páirc Tailteann. Trim led by 1-2 to 0-0 at the break but 1-3 from Joe Loughran helped to turn the tide in the second half. The double was not completed until March 10, 1940 when Kilmessan outscored Kells by 2-9 to 1-5 at the county grounds. The game was not a final in the true sense of the word for had Kells won, the sides would have met again to decide the title winners. Although Meath reached the All-Ireland SFC final in 1939, club football in the county was in a shambles at the time. The 1938 champions Navan Gaels did not defend the title and went out of existence while the Meath Chronicle reported that Kilmessan disbanded the football part of their club after the double was completed.

Noel Keating’s contribution to the welfare of Meath hurling By Noel Coogan
Coming to Meath from his native Tipperary in the sixties, Noel Keating contributed a lot to the welfare of hurling in his adopted county, being part of notable successes at the club and inter-county levels. Noel was originally from Ballyneill near Carrick-on-Suir in the Premier County (the same parish as the famous Mick Hogan) and he played with the Carrick Swans club before ‘emigrating’ to Meath in 1963. Keating played with Trim without any notable success before getting married in 1968 and transferring to
the Kiltale club. He featured in the forwards for the Junior and Intermediate Championship successes of 1971 and ‘72. In the 1971 JHC final in Trim, Baconstown were defeated by 0-11 to 1-7 with Patsy Curley top-scoring with eight points. It was the first title in the grade for Kiltale since 1953 and Paddy Kelly starred in both winning sides. Noel Keating sent over two points in the ‘71 decider. The promoted team quickly made their mark in the intermediate grade and in the 1972 IHC which was not concluded until April of the following year Kiltale trounced Gaeil Colmcille by 3-11 to 0-2 at St Loman’s Park to take the title. Harry Donovan netted the three goals and Paddy Kelly and Tommy Cummins were other shining stars. After his playing career ended, Keating turned his hands to coaching with very satisfying results. He was coach and selector when Kiltale made the big breakthrough with their first Senior Championship triumph in 1982 and when they retained possession of the Jubilee Cup the following year. In the 1982 Meath SHC final both Kiltale and Rathmolyon were bidding to win the title for the first time and it was the side captained by Paddy Kelly junior who took the honours with a 3-7 to 2-6 victory.
Noel Keating
After the game-winning coach Noel Keating described the match as open and exciting and a good advertisement for hurling in Meath. The same teams clashed in the 1983 title decider, again played at St Loman’s Park, Trim, and Peter Farrell led Kiltale to a 0-11 to 1-5 success.
9 MEATH GAA CHAMPIONSHIPS 2020
Sean Colgan in background with Noel Keating of presentation at Ruislip of All-Ireland ‘B’ Hurling Championship
Bizarrely, the 1983 Jubilee Cup decider was followed by a National Hurling League game in which Meath defeated Cavan by 5-25 to 1-2 in a farcical encounter. Keating ventured into county team management in the mid-eighties when taking charge of the Meath under-21 hurlers in 1985. and helped them win five ‘special’ Leinster titles. There was also an All-Ireland triumph in 1999 with Kerry being defeated in a closely contested final at Toomevara, Co Tipperary. Noel became Meath’s junior hurling team manager in 1997 and he steered them to All-Ireland glory in ‘98 and ‘99 with Monaghan and Tyrone defeated in the title deciders. Among his assistants in that period was current Waterford senior boss Liam Cahill, another Tipperary-native, who helped out with the training of the players.
The Kiltale clubman was the efficient PRO of the Meath Hurling Board for a few years in the late ‘80s - early ‘90s period. The highlight of that stint was the All-Ireland B Championship victory in London when he was also a selector with manager John Davis. Looking back on his many years of involvement with hurling in the Royal County, Noel Keating picked out Kiltale’s first SHC title triumph in 1982 and Meath’s B success 11 years later after a few near misses among the most pleasant memories. Of course, the All-Ireland victories by his native Tipperary in recent decades also brought a lot of satisfaction.
