Thank you, Lord for memories – they help to ease the pain… Thank you for those moments set apart. Thank you for the days together – treasures stored away, kept lovingly… and memorized by heart.

We deeply appreciate your kind expression of sympathy in our time of great sorrow.

May 6, 1930 ~ December 10, 2010

Mary was born in Lexington, Kentucky, on May 6, 1930, to Nathan Ashby McCarty and Erma Hackney McCarty. She was the middle child of seven girls. Mary graduated as class salutatorian in 1948 with “Top Honors” from Shawnee High School, an all girls’ school in Louisville, Kentucky. Following graduation from high school, Mary was awarded an American Legion Scholarship for college and attended Western Kentucky University in Bowling Green. After only three years, she graduated in 1951 with a bachelor’s degree in English and a minor in Library Science. Mary moved to Georgia and eventually settled in Toccoa, where she worked at Stephens County High School as a librarian for many years. She went back to school (while still working full time) at the University of Georgia, where she received a Master’s Degree in Education in 1969 and a six-year Degree in Education in 1973. She was inducted into the Kappa Delta Pi International Honor Society in Education while attending the University of Georgia. Mary loved all kinds of sports; however, her favorite teams were the Georgia Bulldogs, Atlanta Braves, and San Antonio Spurs. She also enjoyed making ceramics and excelled at painting them. Mary’s children were all of her nieces and nephews, whom she loved very much, and she was known as the “BEST AUNT” you could ask for. Mary was preceded in death by her parents, Nathan and Erma McCarty; four sisters, Eleanor, Natalie, Lena, and Jewel; and a very special nephew, David. Survivors include her sister and brother-in-law, Evelyn and Gene Mudd of San Antonio, Texas; and her sister, Frances Allen, of Buford, Georgia.
