The iPhone The iPhone is a revolutionary smartphone designed by Apple and was first released on June 29, 2007. The idea for the iPhone was first born when Steve Jobs, CEO at Apple had the idea of a touchscreen based computer that was purely controlled via the screen and removed the need for a keyboard and mouse. This idea was the developed and after prototypes were manufactured the idea was further developed into a mobile phone device and thus the iPhone was born. The iPhone 3G A year later, on July 11 2008 the iPhone's successor, the iPhone 3G was released. On paper this new model did not seem to have many new outstanding features as it still used the same 2MP camera with no video recording functionality and was still limited by the same 128mb eDram memory used in the iPhone 1st generation. The key feature that led to 1 million sales over the first weekend of the release of the iPhone 3G was that It supported Assisted GPS, 3G data and Quadband UMTS/HSDPA. The design of the 3G was a huge upgrade from its predecessor, it used a redesigned plastic polycarbonate housing, giving it a smooth glossy look and also the sides were tapered to give a better grip of the phone. The 16gb model was also available in white and was the first iPhone to become available in more than one color. The iPhone 3G uses an internal rechargeable battery rated at 1150mAh which similarly to its predecessor is not user replaceable and is capable of providing 7 hours of video playback, 6 hours of browsing the web on WiFi and 5 on 3G, 10 hours of talk time or 5 on 3G and 25 hours of audio playback. The iPhone 3GS Another year on and we see the release of the iPhone 3GS on June 8th, 2009 which in terms of aesthetics looked the same as the 3G but featured faster performance, a 3MP camera (upgraded from the 2MP camera in the 3G) that supported video capability and voice control. The S in 3GS stands for speed so as you can imagine, the main purpose of this upgrade was to provide a faster running device that would deal with its many functions quicker and more effectively. The iPhone 4 This now brings us to the next big date in the history of the iPhone, the 24th June 2010 marks the release of the iPhone 4, it uses the tagline 'This Changes Everything, Again' which to be fair, it really did. We saw a completely redesigned iPhone that outdid its predecessors by a long shot. Design wise the iPhone 4 is a lot thinner than previous models at just 9.4mm deep, it has an aluminum frame and a glass front and back. The back is now completely flat which adds to the tablet style look of the device. In terms of features the camera has again been upgraded to 5MP

stills and 720p HD recording for movies and also now features a secondary front facing camera for video calls. We also see the introduction of a gyroscopic sensor that can detect 3-axis angular acceleration, a feature that has been heavily used in new apps that have hit the app store. The iPhone 4 also sports a new processor and is powered by the Apple A4 Chip which is rated at a speed of 1Ghz, which is again a huge upgrade in terms of power. The iPhone 4 also has a 'retina display' which is an ultra crisp 3.5" 960x640 display making the level of detail on the screen incredibly high and the screen itself has also been reinforced and is supposed to be 30 times stiffer than plastic. The iPhone 5 (Maybe) This brings us to early 2011 where we are eagerly awaiting details of the iPhone 5, if my predictions are correct we should see signs of the iPhone 5 in March/April 2011 and hopefully a release in June 2011.
