Gsteig is completely dedicated to its double anniversary

Gsteig is completely dedicated to its large double anniversary in 2012. 700 years of village history and 100 years of tourism will be celebrated. To mark this special occasion, sporting, cultural and traditional activities and events will be held throughout the year for locals and visitors alike. The main celebration with lots of entertainment and music takes place on the weekend of 9 and 10 June 2012.

Gsteig was first mentioned in the urbarium of the county of Greyerz in 1312, which at the time was still known by the Latin name Chastalet. This historic document stipulates the rents owed for goods loaned to the people of Saanen. The local authority is now using this first official record as a good opportunity to celebrate its 700 th anniversary.

24 hours on tour

Emanuel Marti, a native of Gsteig, established local tourism 100 years ago. He had previously worked at various hotels in London. Encouraged by the raving reviews of his home region, the first British citizens embarked on the 24-hour journey from London to Gsteig. With a horse and carriage as well as an English band of musicians in tow, they spent their holidays in the snowcovered village.

Bob run and a fun swim

Until the railway was constructed through Gstaad in 1906, Gsteig was the tourist centre of the Saanenland. In winter, the locals made a natural ice rink available to the visitors from England. A fast-paced bob run lined the street which today is called Furestrasse, whereby a horse pulled the heavy bobs to the start. This service was very popular, as evidenced by the pictures. In later years, the equalising reservoir installed as part of the Gsteig power station was a fun place to swim in summer. The Gsteig Tourist Association was founded in 1912 to promote the newly create tourism industry.

Anniversary events

To mark the double anniversary of 700 years of Gsteig and 100 years of tourism in Gsteig, exciting activities will take place throughout the year. In spring and autumn, locals and visitors alike will meet at six “Abesitze” (sit down together) in a sociable atmosphere.

The main anniversary event is sure to attract lots of people on 9 and 10 June 2012 thanks to its extensive entertainment programme.

The Sunday celebration kicks off with an atmospheric service in the picturesque village church. The official anniversary ceremony will follow in the marquee where brunch will be served and local musicians will entertain the company.

Gsteig will also be publishing an anniversary book on the occasion of the main celebrations which includes lively and profound stories from the community.
