8 IN MY CORNER

The best time of the year By LaTria Garnigan

T

his time of the year is probably the best time of the year. It’s when I get to spoil my mom and treat her to all the activities that I love to do — but that she happily goes along with because it’s my treat. To date, we’ve been to the Atlanta Botanical Gardens, tasted some interesting flavors at the World of Coke, been mesmerized by wildlife at the Georgia Aquarium, taken a trip to Greenville, S.C. for their arts festival and gotten our fix of culture at the High Museum of Art. I try to hit all of the highlights for Mother’s Day and make the occasion truly special for her, and for me. The best part is that even though these excursions are things that are on my personal bucket list, they’re special for her because they’re also experiences that she hasn’t had either. And it’s great to see the enjoyment on her face as she’s experiencing all of this for the first time. So it’s really like a two for one special for us. I’m stumped on what to do this year, however. It may involve revisiting one of the previous destinations. Only because neither of us has been back to visit since our initial one and it would be a treat to retrace our steps. Whatever I choose, I know we’ll both enjoy it and the most important part will be getting to spend the day spoiling her.

*** In this issue, we highlight three local moms who are on their own journey of motherhood. They impart some of the wisdom they have and are continuing to learn and share that even when everything isn’t going smoothly, there’s much to be thankful for. Ever heard of a musical called “Hamilton?” Sure you have. It’s playing in Atlanta this month and three Pebblebrook alums are part of the show. We have a quick Q&A with them about their careers and what they’re looking forward to. Foodie alert: if you haven’t been to downtown Acworth, you should. There are plenty of things to do there, including stopping in for some tapas and cocktails at Brix on Main. And on a beautiful, sunny day make sure to take your plate on the back patio for some rays. If you have a busy family that needs crafting and functional space, this home design will be for you. Get some pointers on how to store your must-haves, while also displaying a beautiful space in your home. Plus, get out and enjoy the beautiful spring weather and get those steps into too. We highlight five of Cobb’s nature trails and parks. Many include specific workout stations to give you a full-body workout.

14 WORTH WATCHING There are a few things to look out for this month if you’re on the hunt for something new to watch in theaters or on television. Here’s your guide. Enjoy! By LaTria Garnigan “Harry & Meghan: A Royal Romance” May 13, 8

A Royal Affair p.m. ET/PT on Lifetime

Save the date for the Lifetime feature, “Harry & Meghan: A Royal Romance,” leading into the real-life wedding of Prince Harry and Meghan Markle later that week. The television movie follows the fairytale romance of Prince Harry (Murray Fraser, “The Loch”) and Meghan Markle (Parisa Fitz-Henley, “Midnight Texas”) from the moment they met after being set up by friends, through their initial courtship when they were able to keep their romance under wraps, and ultimately the intense global media attention surrounding their relationship and Meghan’s life as a divorced American actress.

“Fahrenheit 451” May 19, 8 p.m. ET/PT on HBO Michael B. Jordan (“Black Panther,” “Creed,” “Fruitvale Station”) and Michael Shannon (“The Shape of Water,” HBO’s “Boardwalk Empire”; Oscar®nominee for “Nocturnal Animals” and “Revolutionary Road”) star in HBO Films’ FAHRENHEIT 451. Directed by Ramin Bahrani (“99 Homes”) and written by Bahrani & Amir Naderi (“Vegas: Based on a True Story”), the film is based on Ray Bradbury’s classic novel of the same name, depicting a future where the media is an opiate, history is rewritten and “firemen” burn books. The film debuts this spring, exclusively on HBO. Jordan portrays Montag, a young fireman who forsakes his world and struggles to regain his humanity as he battles his mentor, fire captain Beatty, played by Shannon. Sofia Boutella (“The Mummy,” “Kingsman: The Secret Service”) stars as Clarisse, an informant caught between the competing interests of Montag and Beatty. The cast also includes Lilly Singh (“Bad Moms,” YouTube’s “Superwoman”) as Raven, a tabloid reporter who works with the fire department to spread the ministry’s propaganda by broadcasting its book-burning raids to fans.

“SIX” May 28, 10 p.m. ET/PT on A&E HISTORY’s hit Navy SEAL drama series “SIX,” returns for its sophomore season in a special Memorial Day premiere and doubles up on the action with an all-new episode airing during its regular time slot on May 30 at 10 p.m. Olivia Munn (“The Predator,” “X-Men: Apocalypse,” “The Newsroom”) reports in for duty and makes her debut as the smart, ruthless CIA operative “Gina Cline.” From A+E Studios, the 10-episode second season follows Navy SEAL Team Six in a mission to destroy the terrorist network responsible for the shooting of their former team leader Richard “Rip” Taggart (Walton Goggins, “Justified”). Led by Joe ‘Bear’ Graves (Barry Sloane, “Revenge”), the Navy SEALS will join forces with cunning and tenacious CIA officer Gina Cline (Munn) to scour Eastern Europe, infiltrating hostile territory and terrorist hotspots like Chechnya as they track the mastermind behind Michael’s (Dominic Adams, “Devious Maids”) jihadist network. The chase will bring the Navy SEALs to the border of Russia, where the consequences of their actions could spark World War III.

Not Throwing Away Their Shot! Pebblebrook grads to wow the home crowd in ‘Hamilton’ By LaTria Garnigan Since its debut less than three years ago, “Hamilton” has been making waves in the theater world. Many people from all walks of life have engaged with the show, penned by and starring Lin-Manuel Miranda. The tale of Alexander Hamilton’s life goes through his youth as an immigrant from the West Indies to his rise as the right hand of George Washington. With infectious music and lyrics, if you’ve listened to the soundtrack, it’s easy to forget that you’re basically getting a history lesson on the Revolutionary War. And afterward you begin to wish this was around when you were taking history classes in middle and high school. Miranda’s score infuses hip-hop, jazz, blues, rap, R&B and standard Broadway fare along with a truly representational, multicultural cast to bring to light this story. Creating an opportunity to reach an audience who otherwise may not have been interested in theater. Atlanta-area enthusiasts will have the chance to see the show in person — granted you grabbed your ticket in time! “Hamilton” will run at the Fox Theatre May 22 – June 10. To make this even sweeter for Cobb residents, three Pebblebrook High School alums will be featured. Jennifer Geller and Jeffery Duffy are part of the ensemble, while Hope Endrenyi is part of the swing cast. We caught up with them and managed to get a few questions answered about their excitement and what the audience can expect.

Jeffery Duffy Left Pebblebrook his junior year to pursue a dancing career at The Dance Theatre of Harlem; graduated from Talent Unlimited School in New York City Were you part of the school’s fine arts/theater programs? What made you realize this was your career dream? My major while at Pebblebrook was in Dance with a minor in Vocal Arts. The dream is to continue creating at such a high level and sharing these stories with the people that come and watch us. Hamilton’s initial run has been a monumental success, how does it feel to be part of the cast in front of a “home” crowd in Atlanta? Performing in my hometown with such a successful show means the world! Some of my family members haven’t seen me perform live since middle school. It’s a proud moment! If you could play any role, what would it be and in what production? Stephano in William Shakespeare’s, “The Tempest.” For someone who hasn’t seen a Broadway performance before, what should they expect? This show is a beautiful anomaly, in that it reframes history and bends genres to show the importance of diversity. So, along with the singing and dancing expect a rapid-fire history lesson on the genesis of the American Federal System, and a coming to terms with the diversity that makes up our country. Jeffery Duffy (Ensemble) received his BFA from the Juilliard School; 2016 Princess Grace Dance: Performance Fellowship recipient; Dance Magazine’s 25 to Watch for 2017; previously a dancer with Hubbard Street Dance Chicago.

20 Jennifer Geller Graduated from Pebblebrook in 2013 Were you part of the school’s fine arts/ theater programs? What made you realize this was your career dream? I was part of the fine arts program — I was a dance major and drama minor there. I realized this was my career dream when I was in Pebblebrook’s production of “Hairspray” as a junior. That show at that school seriously changed my life. And at that point, I knew that I had to pursue this. Hamilton’s initial run has been a monumental success, how does it feel to be part of the cast in front of a “home” crowd in Atlanta? Amazing, surreal, wonderful ... any positive word I can think of applies here! It is such a blessing to be able to bring this unbelievable show and story to my hometown. My teachers, my mentors, my family ... they’ll all get to see me doing what I am meant to do on this Earth. My 92-year-old grandfather will also be in the audience ... and I seriously could not ask for anything more. He’s been reading Ron Chernow’s book that

the musical is based on! If you could play any role, what would it be and in what production? In an already running production ... it would definitely be either Elphaba or Nessa in “Wicked.” No question. For someone who hasn’t seen a Broadway performance before, what should they expect? They should expect a mind-blowing experience — an intimate, raw, deep story accompanied by stunning technical elements (the lighting in this show is absolutely gorgeous). Everything about this show is magic; from the people in it to the people behind the scenes, to the lives that it touches. Definitely, expect to be affected. Hope Endrenyi Graduated from Pebblebrook in 2012 Were you part of the school’s fine arts/theater programs? What made you realize this was your career dream? I was a part of the fine arts magnet program there. I had always been singing, dancing and acting growing up. But by the time I got to high school, it was clear this is what I wanted to do professionally. Pebblebrook allowed me to learn what a profession in the arts could look like, while still going to school.

Hamilton’s initial run has been a monumental success, how does it feel to be part of the cast in front of a “home” crowd in Atlanta? It feels wonderful! It really is a treat when things like this come full circle. I think this show is incredibly important in today’s social and political climate. So to get to share this piece of art with my friends and family, in the town where it all started for me, is really quite special. If you could play any role, what would it be and in what production? Oh gosh, that’s a hard one. I don’t know if I can pick just one! But generally, the next role I’d love to play is a misunderstood antagonist of some sort. Getting inside the head of a nuanced, complicated character fascinates me. For someone who hasn’t seen a Broadway performance before, what should they expect? To have a great time! Whether you’re a history buff or just a music fan — this show has got something for everyone. Hope Endrenyi (Swing) is thrilled to be making her Broadway debut. our years ago, with two young children and the excitement of starting anew, Kelly Adkins and her husband, Brandon, purchased their first home together. For almost a year, the couple attempted to decorate the new space themselves in their spare time. Kelly is a pathologist and Brandon runs his own real estate group. Add to that two preschool aged children, and the Adkins’ soon found they had very little “spare time” to designate to decorating their home. “My husband and I have similar taste, but we just didn’t understand how to make it all work,” said Kelly. “We knew we needed someone to help us pull it all together.” After visiting friends whose home had been designed by interior designer Lori May and loving what they saw, the Adkins’ hired Lori to decorate their family room and create a “craft room.” Located just off the Marietta square, Lori May Interiors is a full-service interior design firm specializing in “blending classic elements with modern elegance.” Lori met the Adkins to get a feel for their design taste, and toured the rooms to understand how the space needed to function for the family. “Making rooms look good is easy; making rooms functional is where the challenge comes in,” said Lori. “The Adkins had two young boys at the time, with one on the way. I knew I needed to make both rooms kid-friendly, but in a way that could serve individual needs and grow with the family.” The Adkins’ chose to decorate their family room first as it is the most often used space in their home. Prior to beginning the projects, Lori and her team delivered a presentation, including a detailed budget, to Kelly and Brandon.

“Working with Lori May made the process so much easier,” said Kelly. “Although she met us briefly, she really understood the style we wanted and we stuck with almost all of her suggestions.” Keeping only the Agreeable Gray paint color by Sherwin Williams; the rug purchased from Pottery Barn; and a wall collage of family pictures, the Adkins’ collaborated with Lori to begin construction of the new look. The Adkins’, and Lori, worked with Justin Henry from Paragon Construction to create a completely new mantle and built-ins for the room. Recessed lighting was replaced with stylish sconces and the ceiling fan was traded for a more formal chandelier. Sofas and chairs were added for maximum seating and covered with soft “performance fabrics” making them stain resistant and easier to clean. What’s their favorite part of the room? The painting they had commissioned to hang over the new mantle. “The colors of the landscape pull the room together; it’s relaxing and sets the tone for how we want guests to feel in this space,” said Kelly. The craft room was previously used for storage and offered a clean slate compared to the family room. Crafting is Kelly’s hobby, and she wanted a space she could share with the children while working on projects. “We wanted to create a room that would work for the family from now until their kids are grown,” said Lori. Since crafting involves a surplus of supplies, storage was cleverly fashioned to organize machines, ribbons, paper, scissors and tape. Built-ins were constructed, and a bench under the window serves as both seating and storage with drawers that pull out.

26 One of the most creative aspects of the room is the table on wheels. It can be pushed against the wall for maximum space, or pulled out to fit the entire family. “Just off the kitchen, this is the perfect space for me to quickly wrap gifts or for my kids to do homework in the future,” said Kelly. Decorating both rooms took a little over six months, but Kelly said, “It’s been three years and we still love everything. We will certainly do this again for other rooms.” n

Until recently, there was no practical way to identify dead regions of hearing cells in the ear. However, a new British-developed procedure using standard test equipment now allows for identification of dead hearing cell regions. The study suggests that the presence or absence of dead regions may have serious implications in the fitting of hearing aids.

“We are employing a like method in our diagnostic sound booths using a sound field speech in noise procedure,” said Dr. Gabriel Pitt of Optimal Hearing Systems. “This test simulates hearing in a noisy crowd. We are able to determine maximum speech understanding by frequency shaping this new hearing aid.” The results have been amazing. For the first time, a patient is able to realize the exact amount of improvement in speech comprehension while in noisy listening environments.

28 Treat mom for her special day Compiled by LaTria Garnigan Mothers are special. Not only are they nurturers, but also whole human beings with their own emotional and spiritual needs. From taking care of a family, to working — sometimes it may get hard to carve out time for oneself. That is where you come in. Whether its your own mom, a surrogate mom, your wife, sister, aunt or best friend — make sure to remind them of how special and valuable they are on Mother’s Day. Sometimes just hearing those words are all someone needs. But if you want to up the ante, here are a few ideas to get you started.

A clean house. Let Mom take a load off now and again. Hire a cleaning service once a month for a year, or if you’re on a budget, do it yourself. From laundry to dishes — an IOU ticket to take care of the chores she would usually handle will give Mom an opportunity to take more time for herself to read a book or go out with friends.

— Statepoint

A classic accessory. If you’re looking for something classic, give Mom an accessory that combines function and fashion, such as a nice watch. Offered in a range of styles you’re sure to find something that will complement her fashion palate. Whether that’s for pure style, like a nice elegant watch or something functional and hi-tech like a smart watch, the sky is the limit for this gift. And if you’re feeling fancy, why not get both? I’m sure she won’t mind.

Some rest and relaxation. Send Mom

for a spa day, where she can select the treatments and services she wants best. Or, help her to create a spa-like environment at home, with face masks, a foot spa and bath bombs for the tub.

A hobby. Has Mom always wanted to learn to play piano? Catering to a desired hobby or interest is a great way to show appreciation. Piano lessons would be a wonderful gift, or a nice piano or keyboard to get her on the right path.

Time together. Spend some quality time with Mom. Take a cooking class or comedy workshop together, or look for sip and paint options, where you learn painting skills while enjoying a glass of wine or beer. Local cafes and bars often host such events; however, you may want to check out the community center or community college for class options, too.

here is just something special about a young mother who is learning her way through parenting. Although mothering teenagers and adults brings its own set of challenges, the navigation of transitioning from girls night out to 8 p.m. bedtimes, from planning the next vacation to planning the next 10-minute break, from taking care of no one to taking care of a new life — those challenges of being a new mother bring with them a new excitement, a new vitality and a new perspective. We spoke with three local mothers with young children to learn — in their own words — what motherhood means to them and what it has already taught them in their short time of being called, “Mom.”

Ashley Brooks, Vinings Husband, A.J., Son, Trey, 1

Left and above, Ashley Brooks and her son Trey.

The birth of my son redefined everything in my life. From my relationship with my husband to the way I think about my work and career to the connection I have with my mother and sister, nothing in my life has been the same since March 2, 2017. The lessons I have learned in the first year of my son’s life are endless. He’s taught me about patience, joy, problem solving, intentionality, wonderment, control, resilience and love. Being a mother will without a doubt be the hardest and greatest accomplishment of my life. The greatest lesson my son has taught me is the power of my own strength and the strength of mothers. Mothers can literally do anything and sometimes they must do just that to make it through a day. I am constantly amazed at the number of things I accomplish and balance in a day now that I am a mother. Being a mother means constantly facing new hurdles and figuring out on the spot how to overcome them and move on. I am lucky to be surrounded by amazing mothers — the best of those being my mom, Cynthia Wilson, — who serve as examples and have helped guide me along the journey of motherhood.

34 Laura Higginbotham, Marietta Husband, Bryan, daughter Mary Evelyn, 2 When I think about all that I’ve learned since becoming a mother more than two and a half years ago, the word that resonates with me is GRACE. You need to show grace towards your child, your husband, and most importantly yourself. Grow. As a mother, it is important that we show our children the value of investing in ourselves by growing as individuals. I believe that once you become a mother, your identity does not get lost in that cute little baby (although I do wear the badge of “Mary Evelyn’s Mom” proudly). It is important to maintain who you are as a woman and continue to follow your dreams. Your priorities certainly shift after kids and that is okay, but discover what your passion is and chase it. Your kids will admire you for it. Relax. Learning how to relax and trust myself was a huge moment for me as a new mother. Between Google, WebMD and mom groups, motherhood can be very scary. However, God gave us motherly instincts that will guide us to do what is right for our kids. It seems that every topic in motherhood can be controversial so my only advice to new mothers is always, “you do you.” Can’t breastfeed? Who cares! Want to work? Go for it! But do all these things for you and not for

the acceptance of others. Your kid is going to turn out just fine if you trust your gut. Ask for help. Whether you work full time like me or stay home, you can’t do it all. We are all humans with just 24 hours in the day. Set expectations with your partner on who does what around the house. Ask your employer for some flexibility. Ask extended family to get more involved. It will only benefit your child to see everyone lending a helping hand around the house. It doesn’t mean “Mom is a failure” if you can’t do everything. Shake up social norms because who said moms have to do everything around the house anyway? Comparison Trap. I’ll admit it. I said I would NEVER plaster my kid’s face all over social media, but here we are. It is important to not get hung up on what you see other moms, kids, and families doing on social media. I’ve learned that the “perfect” pictures could be hiding deeper struggles in people’s lives. So I constantly remind myself to be in the moment with my own child and not compare myself with others. Experience. Sometimes I just sit and stare at my kid. I could do it all day long. She’s beautiful, funny and I wish I could be half as cool as her. I know it’s not going to last forever, so I try to soak in every fleeting moment with her. I can’t believe she is mine!

Ashley Brown, east Cobb Husband Chris, daughters Grace, 3, Meredith, 1 Motherhood unsurfaced so much joy, love, heartache and strength within me. My first child, Grace, was a healthy, happy, breeze of a baby. She slept through the night at seven weeks (jackpot!). When she turned two, we told her that she’d be a big sister. In February 2017, Meredith was born, and we were over the moon to welcome a seemingly healthy second child. At six weeks, however, she was still jaundice and small, and we received a life-changing diagnosis of biliary atresia — a pediatric liver disease where bile is not released and slowly poisons the body. Her first year entailed 90 nights in the hospital, three major surgeries and many terrifying moments. The final surgery, at seven months of age, was a liver transplant that saved her life and forever changed ours. Throughout this journey, I have learned that Above and left, Ashley Brown and her daughters Grace and Meredith.

the cliché, “it takes a village” could not be truer. This community has rallied around us with prayers, meals, financial support and so many other kind gestures. Thank God Children’s Healthcare of Atlanta is a part of our village. Whether you have a medically fragile kid or a perfectly healthy one, being a mom is ridiculously hard. It’s okay to ask for help, and I never turn down a meal. “Mom guilt” is so real, but when my kids shriek with joy when I come home from work, I tell myself that I’m doing okay. Many problems can be solved with a squeeze pouch, PEZ dispenser and an asiago bagel (for myself). My kids have taught me so much about life — the fragility, joy of a normal day, exhaustion of a sleepless second child and importance of turning pain into a positive (like organ donation!). Through their loss, another family gave my child and our family so much life. As a mother, I make it my mission to live each day to the fullest, honor our donor and show love in all that I do. n

eth Baker lovingly calls Acworth’s Brix on Main “a play space for grownups” with really good food. “Brix is unique, sophisticated, quirky. An adult space for sure. Not that we mind children, but grownups deserve fun times, too — in our own space,” she joked. Baker and her husband Lee launched the cozy brick-walled bistro one year ago, squeezed into what was formerly a wine bar between two larger businesses on the town’s main street. Brix on Main features tapas — smaller portions of savory dishes meant to be shared — made with fresh natural ingredient and locally grown produce. The intimate restaurant also features domestic and craft beers, custom cocktails and selected wines, she said. Full-sized entrees are also available. “We wanted to do something different than what the rest of the area has to offer,” she said. “There’s a really nice American-style restaurant across the tracks. There’s the Cajun place a couple doors down, an Italian place the next block over and a sports bar behind us.” Downtown Acworth’s bustling dining scene has been steadily growing for years and draws crowds from across the Atlanta metro area, she said. “We opened the kind of place we‘d like to hang out in, a place to try new things and share the things we love with our friends,” Beth said. “Allergies? Yes, I have lots of them. My husband says I’m allergic to air,” she joked. “I am passionate about healthy eating. We wanted to offer a number of organic, gluten-free, non-GMO, soy and dairy-free items so we would have someplace to eat.” The menu will soon feature gluten-free desserts as well.

Lee, 54, is a native Floridian who loves water and palm trees and admits to remembering rotary telephones. He worked in television and corporate communications for several national companies before launching a private consulting business. Beth managed several restaurants and bars in the Southeast and taught English as a second language in North Georgia. They married in 2013 and relocated to Acworth with their blended family that includes six children. They decided to open a restaurant. “We wanted to invest in our new town,” she said. “This is such a beautiful area and we both love old historical things,” she said. “We are true ‘foodies. Lee ate and drank in restaurants all over the world and I’ve lived all over the country. We’ve both tried all kinds of things.” For years, Lee wanted to open a restaurant in Key West, Florida. “It’s that ‘rum and pirates’ thing maybe. But the commute was a little far so we decided to bring a little bit of Key West to Acworth,” he joked. The couple noticed the vacant storefront and thought it had possibilities as a small restaurant. They sat on a bench for hours on evenings and Saturday mornings to watch the crowds stroll through the area to the shops and other restaurants, hoping to come up with a plan.

We opened the kind of place we‘d like to hang out in, a place to try new things and share the things we love with our friends.

“We asked people what they liked and what they might like to see. Food was what kept visitors returning. We asked what they thought about tapas and they said there’s nothing like that around here. So that’s what we did,” she said.

*** Their guests are quite diverse. “We don’t have a target market. Our guests come from all walks of life and all incomes,” she said. “We get a lot of overflow from the other full-scale restaurants. People pop in and have a couple drinks before their dinner or end their evening with a dessert or a drink. We give people the opportunity to try something new.” Beth does all of the shopping and said she buys as much organic produce as she can find. They use three local farms when possible for seasonal produce. And hope to add local, organically-raised pork items to their menu soon. The cozy interior makes for fast friendships. “I’ve seen two tables of women who came in separately but soon put their tables together,” she said. “The next week they all came in together having a great time. The atmosphere is very laid-back.” The restaurant’s macaroni and cheese — made with gluten-free pasta, smoked Gouda and white cheddar cheese, mozzarella cheese, topped with nitrate-free bacon and crunchy parmesan cheese — ranks as the house favorite, she said. The Bakers are always open to possible additions to their menu. “Basically, we just figure out what we like. We get input from our staff and guests and ask what they would like to see. We want them to enjoy this place and keep coming back,” Beth said. n

To add a little more oomph to the workout, try doing walking lunges up and down the hills. Don’t forget to stretch before and after to reduce risk of injury. The Paces Mill paved path has

numerous railings along the route that you can use to help you stretch those arms, legs and torso. Paces Mill also offers hikes on wooded trails, along the river and up the hill. These can be a little challenging, with tree roots and rocks to scale (known as the West Palisades area). The entrance to Paces Mill has a large open field near the parking lot, perfect for a pickup game of kickball or just throwing a football around if you want to end your walk with something more intense. If you like going the distance, you can continue on to Akers Mill Trail and Cochran Shoals. Bonus: This is one of the most scenic areas in Cobb and a great place to spot wildlife. If you seek a more serene and steady stroll, just take the Paces Mill paved path until you reach the first bridge — it’s pretty flat up until that point.

Gold Branch – Chattahoochee River National Recreational Area Location: 5690 Lower Roswell Road, Marietta Info: www.nps.gov/chat/planyourvisit/upload/TrailMapGoldBranch.pdf Get back to basics on Gold Branch’s dirt paths that wind between the trees. Multiple loops zig-zag through this Marietta landscape, allowing you to make the hike as long or as short as you’d like. The elevation changes throughout the hike are good for an interval workout. The rocky, rooty and often narrow footpath keeps you on your toes, adding balance exercises to your walk or jog. Gold Branch isn’t often crowded, so you’ll feel comfortable adding in squats and lunges to keep your walk varied. There are also many trees along the path you can use as support for stretching and balance exercises. Note: There are no restrooms or water fountains, so come prepared.

Kennesaw Mountain – Pigeon Hill and West Loop trail Location: 900 Kennesaw Mountain Dr., Kennesaw Info: www.nps.gov/kemo/planyourvisit It’s no secret that Kennesaw Mountain offers one of the best workout in Cobb. With 22 miles of trails traversing the 1,808 foot tall mountain, it’s great for cardio and general exercise. But if you’ve gotten into a mundane routine of the Big Mountain Hike, it’s time to spice up your trek. Step one, forget the main trail and take the (slightly) less traveled Pigeon Hill Trail (parking off of Burnt Hickory Road). The 5.7 mile hike starts off with a bang, a steady upward trajectory that will have you working up a sweat within minutes. The rocky path is moderately challenging to navigate. Step two, engage with nature. Use what’s available to add exercises to your hike. Tall, smooth rocks are just right for wall push-ups. Small rocks double as weights. A row of rocks becomes your balance beam. Channel your inner goat and climb up those soaring pillars along your path. Flat surfaces are platforms for jumping jacks, push-ups and plank stops. Step three, find a ledge and take a moment to relax and soak in the nature. Maintaining mental health is just as important. Step four, reach the summit and take a victory lap. Step five, take a leisurely cool-down stroll in the open grassy field to cool down after coming down the mountain. Note: For a workout that gives back, join the Kennesaw Mountain Trail Club to help the park staff maintain the trails on designated Saturdays — the work can be quite strenuous. n A Continuing Care Retirement Community offering comprehensive services for your needs now and in the future. 50 KEEPING UP WITH KATY RUTH

Murder! At the Earl and Rachel Smith Strand Theatre, that is By Katy Ruth Camp On Thursday, April 12, I was electrocuted on the mezzanine of the Strand. OK so I wasn’t really electrocuted, per se, it was more of a flashing lights, neon wires, fake screaming kind of thing but, for the murder mystery show’s sake, I was killed. I was the first of seven other local “celebrities” who met their demise in support of the arts that weekend, including Justin O’Dell, Katie Arjona, John Loud, Cassi Costoulas, Vic Reynolds, Mazi Mazloom and Sam Olens. Each show was limited to 60 murder mystery enthusiasts and nearly all of the shows were sold out. I’m not sure what that says about all of the people who wanted to see us die, but it was a great weekend for the arts and an incredible amount of work went into the production, created by director and playwright Corey Bradberry and escape room designer Jeremy Ledbetter. Each actor in the show had to have a different line depending on what the attendees asked so the script was amazingly intricate. Think escape room through dialogue in an art deco, historic theatre. Strand General Manager Andy Gaines said the response was overwhelmingly positive so they are considering doing another run of the show in the future. If you attended though, no spoilers, please! As for me, I believe I can only die and be resurrected once, but stranger things have happened. *** He went down to Georgia last month, but Charlie Daniels was far from being the devil with his special visit. The country music legend lent his star power to help two worthy causes at the beautiful Atlanta home of Phillip and Nan Street. The exclusive, invite-only dinner party included catered fare by Local Three, a live auction and songs and stories from Daniels. Mark Geist, a member of Benghazi Annex Security Team and co-author of the book “13 Hours” was also in attendance and shared his story. The event raised more than $170,000 for Shepherd’s Men and Daniels’ own charity, Journey Home Project. Both charities work to help veterans recover physically and mentally from the tolls of war and lower the suicide rate for veterans. When Cobb County resident and Shepherd’s Men Founder Travis Ellis first invited me to the event, I was expecting a small concert where Daniels might pose for a few photos, play a few songs then be on his way. But as the shuttle took me from my parking space and down the

50

long driveway to the Italian-esque mansion, I knew this would far exceed my expectations. The “concert” would be held inside of the home’s living room following a casual, social dinner, making it extremely intimate and meaningful for the 60 or so people in attendance. Daniels talked about the horses he lost in an awful barn fire. Artist Nikki Davidson of Dallas, Georgia, presented him with a beautiful, patriotic painting of Daniels with the horse he got after the fire named New Beginnings. He sat with his guitar on a simple chair and played “Long Haired Country Boy,” “How Great Thou Art” and a handful of other songs. He talked about BB King and Elvis and Willie Nelson. He pondered over patriotism and hugged veterans and marveled over auction items. He was humble and kind and it was clear these two charities meant a great deal to him, especially since he canceled a show the night before at the Grand Ole’ Opry so he could rest and recover from an illness and be ready to perform at the fundraiser. Many Cobb philanthropists were in attendance for the event, including Kim Gresh and George Hartzog, Mitch and Lane Rhoden, Mark and Rhonda Jacobson, Scott and April Wright, Cassy Ferrell and others, mostly to support Ellis and the Shepherd’s Men, although getting up close and personal with Daniels was certainly a plus. If you are unfamiliar with the Shepherd’s Men, the group is made up of men and women who raise funds and awareness for SHARE Military Initiative at Shepherd Center in Atlanta. This comprehensive rehabilitation program focuses on assessment and treatment for military veterans who have sustained a mild to moderate Traumatic Brain Injury and Post-Traumatic Stress Disorder from service in the post-9/11 wars. Each year, the group runs an incredible distance ending at the Shepherd’s Center to raise awareness for the cause. This year, the group will be kicking off its fifth annual run in support of SHARE in Chicago, Ill. As in years past, the Shepherd’s Men team will complete a daily 22km run — more than a half-marathon a day (21.1km or 13.1 miles) — to represent the 22 deaths by suicide of U.S. veterans every day. All legs of the run will be open for members of the corresponding community to walk, run and cheer alongside the team. The run will take place May 22 through May 28, with stops in Indianapolis, Indiana; Louisville, Kentucky; Nashville, Tennessee; Johnson City, Tennessee.; Athens, Georgia and Atlanta. For more information on the group, as well as its upcoming events and fundraisers, visit shepherdsmen. com. If a long-haired country boy can call in sick to the Grand Ole’ Opry to support the cause, anyone can help. n
