HISTORICAL BACKGROUND CITEM is a result of the merger of two government agencies, namely:

The Philippine Trade Exhibition Center (PTEC) created under Executive Order 989 dated 10 October 1984, institutionalized the “holding of trade exhibitions for the promotion of locally manufactured products and implement projects designed to upgrade the quality of such products to international standards, coordinate raw material sourcing, develop markets, and provide assistance to Philippine manufacturers in general.” Center for International Trade Expositions and Missions, Inc. (CITEM, Inc.) A Securities and Exchange Commissionregistered corporation established on 20 January 1983. CITEM, Inc. was a subsidiary of the Philippine International Trading Corporation (PTIC). On 27 February 1987, President Corazon C. Aquino issued Executive Order 133 that re-structured MTI (which was renamed the Department of Trade and Industry) and its attached agencies. Under Section 18 (V) of Executive Order 133, PTEC was merged with CITEM with the latter as the surviving entity. Shortly after, on 24 July 1987, Executive Order 242 amended Section 18 (V) of Executive Order 133 as: “The Center for International Trade Expositions and Missions, Inc. is hereby merged with the Philippine Trade Exhibition Center. The latter shall be the surviving entity and is hereby renamed “Center for International Trade Expositions and Missions.”
