ANGELINA JOLIE Hits back

A

Angelina Jolie paused from plugging her new film with Johnny Depp (watch The Tourist trailer) to hit back at critics of her upcoming directorial debut. The Oscar winner lashed out at the Bosnian haters who have called her ignorant and sought to block her from shooting her film in the country. “There’s one person who has a gripe. The majority of the populations, the cast, the president, have been extremely supportive,” Jolie said in Paris. A number of people were upset after hearing the still-untitled film’s plot dealt with a Bosnian Muslim woman who falls in love with her Serbian soldier rapist. The storyline from the film set during the 1990s war turned out to be a rumor, and a false one at that, but their protests were enough to spark controversy. The outcry even prompted officials to cancel the star’s film permit, citing insufficient paperwork, only to reissue in days later. But has she already moved on?

WESLEY SNIPES Gets official prison

H

He’s already been Passenger 57. But, soon, Wesley Snipes will getting another number, of the inmate variety. The action star, who tried his hardest to avoid a prison sentence on tax evasion charges, has been ordered to begin serving his three-year stint at a federal prison in Pennsylvania on December 9. All attempts by Snipes and his attorneys to overturn his 2008 conviction failed, as prosecutors allege the actor did not pay any taxes on the reported $38 million he earned from 1999 on. “The Defendant Snipes had a fair trial. The time has come for the judgment to be enforced,” wrote U.S. District Judge William Terrell Hodges. Indeed, for Snipes, it’s time to get off the Money Train.

WHATS THE Inside scoop

D

Did Sarah Palin make daughter Bristol go Dancing With the Stars to win over America as part of a strategy to prime the pump for a 2012 White House run? That’s what Margaret Cho says she heard. Whatever it’s worth. On her blog, the comedian says someone “who would know” told her “the only reason Bristol Palin was on the show was because Sarah forced her to do it.” If that’s true, we’d say results were mixed. Not everyone loved Bristol’s run. Still, better idea than calling out Michelle Obama over childhood nutrition. What’s more, “Sarah supposedly blames Bristol harshly and openly (in the circles that I heard it from) for not winning the election in 2008,” Cho writes. “So she told Bristol she ‘owed’ it to her to do DWTS so that ‘America would fall in love with her again’ and make it possible for Sarah to run in 2012.” 10 TULIP DECEMBER 16-31, 2010

PARINEETA PAIR

BOLLYWOOD

to act again

Vidya Balan and Saif Ali Khan are again set to re-create the magic of ‘Parineeta’. The duo have been signed five years after ‘Parineeta’. They will come together in Balaji Motion Pictures’ ‘Dream Sequence’ to be directed by Vishal Bhardwaj. Says a source in Balaji, “Initially, Deepika Padukone was to do the role. The casting of the duo together after Love Aaj Kal had its appeal. But the actress backed off when she heard that the Chote Nawab was having second thoughts and that Abhay Deol would fill in for him. However Saif decided to stay with the project after a long discussion with his Omkara director. Meanwhile, with Dippy gone, there was a fresh hunt for the leading lady. Vidya was part of Bhardwaj-produced Ishqiya. The actress, director and producer are keen to work together in this film and are currently working on the dates.” This would be Saif’s first picture with Balaji while Vidya is already doing one with them titled, ‘Dirty Picture’.

BEBO

calls Shahid sexiest

K

Kareena Kapoor might not be Shahid Kapoor’s lady any longer but the actress is not at all hesitant to declare that according to her Shahid Kapoor is the sexiest amongst Arjun Rampal, Imran Khan, John Abraham and Hrithik Roshan. She has made this strong revelation on the talk show, ‘Koffee with Karan’ with Saif Ali Khan sitting by her side. Her statement shocked Saif. Kareena split-up with Shahid and bonded with Saif way back in 2007 and ever since their relationship has been a hot topic of discussion. Making the chit-chat more interesting with Karan, Saif Ali Khan made the boldest statement while describing himself, he said, “I am reliable, strong and very long.” Bebo also mocks Priyanka Chopra for her accent and placed herself at number one. She replies: “I am and if there is a little bit of ‘act’ in actress, then she (Priyanka) is number two.”

HRITHIK GETS

H

upset with Salman

Hrithik Roshan reacted to Salman Khan’s unpleasant comment about the film ‘Guzaarish’ and the filmmaker Sanjay Leela Bhansali. Salman Khan has made a spiteful comment regarding the film saying, it wasn’t even watched by dogs- “koi kutta bhi nahin gaya”. Hrithik slammed the actor for making such a raunchy remark. The actor in reply said Salman, “It’s not heroic to laugh or make fun of a filmmaker just because his BO collections are not up there with yours. ‘Guzaarish’ is a super success in its own way. In my opinion a hero never gloats. When you are super successful, it should in fact make you more gracious and loving.” Hrithik added that he would not tolerate any person talking bad about Bhansali. Hrithik possesses a great heart and at the next moment he forgave Sallu, he said, “This is the time one should use to turn even enemies into friends, just give love, and not laugh at others. By the time I finish this sentence, I have already forgiven his words, because I know deep inside he only has love for me and this must have been just a momentary lapse of judgement. Will expect a big hug the next time I meet him”. Well, Salman should never forget that he is speaking ill about that filmmaker who has given him hits in the past. CHARAN ON

R

a holiday, Bunny on recce

Ram Charan, who has been desperately looking for a break from daily routine, went on a holiday couple of days ago. He along with Allu Arjun and few other friends went to a private island near Andaman. It seems there is no one on that island! “Nenu, bunny and few friends just landed on a private island near Andaman. Nobody on this island. Hoping to have a relaxed holiday. Will update u guys,” he posted on his Twitter page. Actually Charan thought of leaving to Bangkok and pay a surprise visit to his close friend Rana, who is currently shooting there for his upcoming film Nenu Naa Rakshasi. Due to the unavailability of planes he has opted for island visit. Once Charan returns to Hyderabad he will resume the shooting of his next film ‘Merupu’ under Dharani direction. While Allu Arjun is all set to marry his long time girl friend Sneha Reddy this February he might be on a recce as Bunny is in favour of destination marriage. That means the marriage venue won’t be in Hyderabad. Destination marriage means they will book some far off island or big palace, or cruise and the entire marriage ceremony will be conducted there with selected guests.

ILLEANA’S

B-town role updates

R

Reports have been floating about Ileana’s Bollywood debut, but the damsel is giving a deaf ear to all those. She is neither conforming nor condemning these reports. If the buzz is to be believed, Ileana is roped into play a pivotal role in Bollywood film, Silence, directed by Anurag Basu. Silence stars Ranbir Kapoor in the lead and Priyanka Chopra plays the female lead. Earlier it was rumored that Asin was roped in to the film when Kareena Kapoor walked out of the film. It seems Ileana has kicked Asin out of Silence. Let’s wait for the official confirmation before we congratulate Ileana for making it to the B town. Apart from this good news according to sources from Tollywood industry, recently Dasari Narayana Rao has scolded Ileana. It is said that Dasari didn’t go well with Ileana’s attitude when it comes to respecting seniors. “Recently Ileana wished a senior producer wit out a respect as if he is her friend. Dasari garu, who were present at the occasion didn’t go well with it and scolded Ileana to behave herself,” said a source.

VISHNU MANCHU to enter Kollywood

V

Vishnu Manchu is soon going to cross Andhra border and enter Tamil film industry. His upcoming film “Vastadu Naa Raju” will release in Tamil too. Interestingly, the actor himself is producing this film. The actor, who is well versed in Tamil, as he spent his childhood in Chennai, plans to shoot a few scenes there to suit the Tamil market. Sources say that the lead actress of the film is Taapsee who has already acted in Tamil, so the audience will be able to connect with her. The film is being directed by Hemanth Madhukar, whose Hindi film “Flat” won critical acclaim recently. “When the movies of Tamil stars rake in so much money here, we also should try to explore their market and I am doing just that,” the actor said. Not many Telugu actors have ventured into Tamil films and made it big there, it will be interesting to wait and see if Vishnu can break the jinx. 12 TULIP DECEMBER 16-31, 2010

KINGS XI PUNJAB’S

K

Termination on hold

Kings XI Punjab got a stay on its IPL expulsion from the Bombay High Court. Justice S J Vazifdar remarked that going by the documents, Kings XI had “made out a strong case”. The dispute will now again go before a new arbitrator - earlier arbitrator Justice B N Srikrishna having recused himself - but as of now Kings XI will be able to participate in the players auction in January. Kings XI will have to, however, furnish bank guarantees for making up the losses that BCCI, as well as its own players might suffer in case the arbitrator’s award goes against Kings XI. The judge also said that Kings XI will have to clear the dues of players for the previous IPL season. “It is a question of national prestige,” he said. Interestingly, Justice Srikrishna, who was arbitrator in dispute between BCCI and Rajasthan Royals, too had observed that prima facie termination of Royals’ agreement was illegal. Kings XI, jointly owned by Zinta, Wadia, Mohit Burman and Karan Paul, had bagged the Mohali bid in early 2008 for Rs 76 crore. However, two recent franchisees - Kochi and Sahara Pune - had fetched BCCI Rs 330 crore and Rs 370 crore.

ANCELOTTI ADMITS Chelsea is scared

B

Boss Carlo Ancelotti admitted Chelsea still looked “a bit afraid to play football” after the 1-0 defeat at Marseille. Brandao’s late goal secured the victory for Marseille to end Chelsea’s unbeaten record in Champions League Group F. Ancelotti said “Defensively there was tactical discipline and I asked for this from my players. We didn’t have a lot of opportunities to shoot and score, we need to be clearer with the final ball.” Asked whether this level of performance would suffice in the three big Premier League games coming up, Ancelotti added “We have to improve to play against these teams but we have a possibility to do this. “We lost confidence up front, now we are a bit afraid to play football, we have to keep going, stay compact and prepare well for the next game.” Ancelotti revealed that Nicolas Anelka and Ashley Cole, who did not travel to Marseille, would be available against Tottenham at the weekend and sounded upbeat about Frank Lampard’s chances of taking part too after a long injury lay-off.

Marriage

Saga & More By Neehara Sanjivi

The first impression that one gets when you look at Moghny & Mobina Khan is that of a newly married couple that has just returned from their honeymoon. Just by looking at them you would never have guessed that they’ve been married for six years. Tulip takes you through their tale of love, marriage and life. 24 TULIP DECEMBER 16-31, 2010

“My mother looked up a matrimonial site and she found him and chose him for me. After that we met twice with all our family members and one meeting was just the two of us at a restaurant and a date for our marriage was fixed soon after” says MOBINA when asked how their union had come about. She says that her wedding day was the happiest day of her life- a statement that her husband agrees with. “We were married on 24th AUGUST, 2004 & the weeding and the reception were both very grand affairs with around 6000-7000 guests.” The giant photo albums that they flip through are proof of the extravagant event that was their wedding. Despite Moghny’s hectic working schedule the one thing that has not changed over the past six years is the one meal that they eat together everyday. “Since I’m at work in the afternoon I have my lunch there. I also work quite late – I usually only finish at around nine or ten o’clock so it is not possible to have dinner at home. Dinner is usually eaten out at restaurants with friends. Breakfast is the only meal that we can have together and we have been doing that since we have been married” says Moghny, who is the managing director of Moghny’s Shahi Libaas- a chain of clothing stores in the city. It is the one thing that has not changed. “I don’t actually make the breakfast for him but I do bring it to him and we both sit at the table and eat together” says Mobina.

SPECIAL BONDING

When asked what the best gift his wife has given him, he answers instantly- “my two daughters” and she smiles shyly. Moghny and Mobina are the proud parents of five year old Mazia and four year old Maria. When asked if they would want more kids, the answer is something you would not anticipate, especially when you see how stunning Mobina looks despite having two kids already! “Yeah, I’d love to have more kids! Two boys perhaps- to balance things out!” she laughs. When you are working most of the time and have kids as well, it can be difficult to spend time together but they still make it work and manage to keep the romance alive. “We do go out for late night dinners and midnight buffets once every ten days at least” says Moghny. Having common interests also makes things work. “We catch a lot of movies together. All the latest movies that come out each month, we make it a point to watch them. We watch at least four or five movies in a month” Moghny adds. They are both huge movie buffs and they use this similarity as a means of bonding with each other. After they were married, Mobina moved in with Moghny and his family and when asked if it was difficult to adjust to the new household she says that she fit right in! “Before I was married, I lived in Banjara Hills with my parents and Falaknauma is like at the opposite end of that part of the city but it was very easy for me to adjust with my new family. I’m very comfortable here and prefer staying here” they have a great family that supports them in everything that they do and they hold them in high regard. They spend a lot of time with their family in the form of vacations and other social activities. The couple travel extensively and make a lot of trips to different places as a family. “We travel a lot. We’ve been to many places outside the country as well” says Moghny. “We’ve been to America and have also seen most of the places in India too” When asked which is their favorite vacation spot, Moghny answers- “Ooty, definitely! We go there every year because of the pleasant weather. We go out to the jungles there with our friends and family and stay there for a couple of days” DECEMBER 16-31, 2010 TULIP 25

SPECIAL BONDING

Camping out in forests and traveling extensively shows the explorative streak in people. So which of one of them is the more adventurous one? “I am!” was an answer that came out almost in chorus. “We both are but we don’t get that much time to go out and explore as much as we like to” Mobina adds. Adventurous individuals do indulge in a lot of physical activity. Moghny tells us that he is quite the fitness freak “I do work out five times a week, without fail. Me and some of my friends hit the gym after work and then go out for some juice, which is like a ritual for us” if you met Moghny, you’d know he was not kidding about being into fitness! With a family that they want to expand a little more, and a busy work schedule, one can sometimes forget some important dates like birthdays or anniversaries. “He sometimes does forget because he is so busy but that’s okay” says Mobina. “No I don’t forget!” adds Moghny sheepishly. They are so in sync with each other you can’t help but wonder if marriages really are made in heaven. Through the course of married life, people do change as individuals and as a couple as well. To that statement Moghny replies “we did not know each other before we got married. It was just three meetings and we were husband and wife after that. So even if there was change, it was not something was noticeable” They have ups and downs like all married couples do but when you look at them it is hard to imagine something like that. They have been together for six years and look like the picture perfect couple that just stepped out of a catalogue for the happily married couples! They prove that no matter how you meet or how you are brought together, when you are meant to be you just are! You don’t have to know each other for years to want to spend your life with someone. Some things just work out like that. So here’s wishing this beautiful couple a lifetime of happiness filled with more love, laughter and of course more kids!

Who is the stricter parent? Moghny: Me. Mobina: Moghny. They both agree that Moghny is the disciplinarian and Mobina is more like their friend.

Who likes giving surprises? Moghny: Mobina. Mobina: me. Mobina is more likely to surprise her husband with something special.

Who is the morning person? Moghny: neither Mobina: neither They are both creatures of the night but Mobina does compromise on this since she has to get the kids ready for school.

Who wins the arguments and fights? Moghny: Mobina. Mobina: me Well the lady gets what she wants!

Who is more tech savvy? Moghny: I am. Mobina: Moghny. They totally fit the stereotype on this one!

Who is the bigger movie buff? Moghny: Me. Definitely! Mobina: Moghny. Moghny admits to watching a movie that he enjoys more than once!

CINEMA BUFFS

MOVIE REVIEW By Hassan Ali

A weekend to while away and don’t know what to do. Catch up with a movie in your nearest cinema halls. Before you head for a day of fun, butter popcorns and visual treat to those tired eyes, read on our verdict on this fortnight latest movie. I always have had a positive approach towards Aushutosh Gowarikar’s movies, he has directed some of my most favourite one’s like Swades, Laagan and Jodha Akbar but because of one disaster Whats your Rashee this film maker made me disappoint but then for all you guys out there if this is the scenario with you then you are going to eat your words back and applaud “Khele Hum Jee Jaan Se”. Before going to the movie I always felt it was about some game like Laagan had cricket element in it I thought there would be football because promos and film posters showing England club etc which made me think it was all about football but then “no” I was wrong. This movie is not about football but never the less it’s a piece of perfect art which will surely boost your patriotism. This is not the first time Ashutosh Gowariker has adapted a book into a film. KHELEIN HUM JEE JAAN SEY is yet another book-to-movie adaptation by this talented storyteller [this one is based on the book ‘Do And Die: The Chittagong Uprising 1930-34’ by Manini Chatterjee]. Again, this is not the first time Ashutosh Gowariker has revisited the bygone era. He did it successfully in LAGAAN [period], then JODHAA AKBAR [historical] and now KHELEIN HUM JEE JAAN SEY [period].

RATING

7/10 ble cha t a W

Abhishek Bachan as a leader and a teacher by profession fits into the role beautifully, Deepika Padukone playing Kalpana is sweet but Deepika give us some new expression we are bored of the same expression, Anupam Kher’s son Sikander Kher has done justice with the small part he has in the movie and all the characters in the movie fits in the role perfectly and the credit goes to Ashutosh for this who I think had done full justice with the movie except in few parts where he could not get out the emotions properly. Final word is 3 on 5 for this movie from me, not a must watch but then a good watch for the weekend, don’t go under hyped publicity, you will like the movie for sure.

Recreating the bygone era needs justice which the film maker has completely given it to the movie indeed it must have been a challenge to present the era convincingly. Besides extensive detailing to lend authenticity, the director carries the responsibility of making the characters come alive to the present-day generation. Gowariker has successfully done that in the past and does it successfully yet again in KHELEIN HUM JEE JAAN SEY. 1930, British India: In the province of undivided Bengal lies the sleepy, peaceful port of Chittagong( now called as Bangladesh). In this unassuming little town, a revolution is about to begin; a revolution which will forever wake all of Chittagong and inspire the entire nation. April 18. 1 night. 5 simultaneous attacks. A band of 64 - 56 innocent yet fearless young boys, 5 defiant revolutionaries, 2 determined young women, and an idealistic leader [Surjya Sen], a school teacher by profession played perfectly by Abhishek Bachhan This group of 64 represents a little-known chapter in history; a forgotten night that reigned terror on the British through a series of calculated attacks. This is a true story of these forgotten heroes and the narrative takes us through every step of the action from the initial trepidation, to the thrill of the attack, to the underground movement, daring escapes and tragic captures, and most importantly, their undying legacy. The book-to movie conversion has been done perfectly, may be I would disagree with the book and then freedom fighter surjaya sen and not ashutosh where he took in young mind into the attack which was meaning less but then its not directors fault to depict it as this is what really happened.

PIECE OF LIFE

love AAJ KAL aur kal.....

34 TULIP DECEMBER 16-31, 2010

So what’s your status: Complicated or Open- Relationship???? Love has been changing – changing big time and in all directions. Deepa S K explores relationships today. It’s not mushy, not romantic and definitely not committed (rarest of rare cases is an assumption). So what is it then? Now is the era where live in relationships, free pass and giving space are the buzzwords. To find more read this personal essay and find out for yourself.

My friend was proposing to this girl he had been dating for not more than 3 weeks. I over heard his talk (I know Eve’s dropping is a sin, but hey you can’t help it, can you!). “ My Lady!, I’ll be straight, I am straight and I want to get this straight to you, that I love you and want to lovingly live a complete straight life with you. There was no other better time that at the break of the New Year’s Eve. So, be my friend, be my guide, and be the love of my life! (That sounded like a complete rip off from one of the songs his iPod must have played!) What a jerk! I thought, he can’t even propose properly! And I did call him a jerk! He politely asked his lady love on the other, to hold on! (In the middle of the proposal I must say. So much for a true LOVE!) My friend replied to my comment saying,”Jerk! At least I’m using some pin up words to woo the girl; it’s hard to nail a relationship, these days! Nail a relationship, I gasped! How does one nail relationships? I was talking in my head. (One of my favourite exercises it is). And he got back to the proposal conversation, explaining his reason of absence, saying, “Honey! Talking to you my heart out, I could

hardly breathe, I could not believe I was doing this! But yea, I wanted you to know how much I love you. I do and it’s an I do”. And surprisingly, the girl said yes, in a jiffy. He browsed his FB and quickly changed his status to “committed”. Look at how time changes, the status you are in. Sophisticated or just wanna be’s? I did not know what to figure out this friend of mine to be. Now you may think, it’s an absurd status to mention, but the truth is that we live in a world, where we are known far and well by the status we portray. It so happens that these are words that actually speaks. Most of the social networking sites design their relationship options in ways like,” Its Complicated”, “Its open relationship” and the usual one’s like, “Engaged”, “Committed” etc. This has become a rather important issue here-mentioning one’s relationship status. I’m quite sure 9 out of 10 people, check the relationship status first, when they receive or browse a friend request or list. It’s funny, why do we do this! In the age of “Cheek to Cheek Kiss”, relationships have also taken the same place. We brush up with this one person, we try to hang up with them, when we think it’s not ‘convenient’ (I love to detest this word), we move on. One of the famous brands has its tag line, as ‘move on man’. Relationship is a word in a world in itself, mean so different to each one of us. The reason being, we are social animals and we are never content with what and whom we

have! As simple as that! A very good example of such ‘Cheek to Cheek Kiss’ relationships can be watched in our tinsel villages, where more that FB, people live on twitter to speck and spank on people who are dating or seeing behind the scenes. When I read’em all, I feel like screaming- Get a Life dude! I want a real relationship, cries out my soul. But I’m afraid to confess this, as I’m very scared whether I will be called another bhaiyya or behenji types- coz I want to live the momentary bash, the thrill and excitement. Continuing my acceptance and quest towards the thrill in relationships, I chillax at a coffee joint which are the never endin-thing happening amongst the young and old (Surprise! Surprise! Even they have begun to date). They say relationships are made or broken here. So sitting and relaxing with one of my friend’s who was giving me this ‘gyaan bhashan’ about her 5 relationships, out of which she broke up with 3 guys, had a ‘somewhat enjoyable live-in relationship’ and the guys who broke up with her in the next 2 relationships, it was quite an enlightening tale. Asked her the reason behind this adventurous life, her answer to me was, “I can’t imagine staying with the same guy for too long, I need change and I love change”. After a while he get’s boring and his actions gets boring, it gets to my nerves, I begin to get used to him (did she just watch Anjaana Anjaani movie, apparently, getting used to was one of the USP’s of the movie) and then the deadliest pest called ‘compromise’ will begin to creep in like cancer. Well, that’s when I “switch”. I said in my head.” You SWITCH! (You what!) What’s this? A turn on and off game?” Apparently yes, there are people who will swear that some of them get into a relationship, just for all the turn on’s and once when the intense romantic flame dies out, everything turns topsy- turvy turn off. Apparently, both the partners tend to feel alike. It’s mutual they say and the ex’s turn out to be best friends. Of all that you have shared in and out, you then fight, break up and say my ex is my best friend. Who are you kidding, darlings? Like the English say, It’s all Bollocks! Your ex can never ever be your best friend. There will always be a memory lingering around, actually memories, and always a flush of envy can be seen every time the ex’s gets a new date. Now upholding ex-relationship is complicated rather than complex and thank you! Divorce, you may end up seeing your ex on and off due to various legal reasons. Divorce, break up’s are becoming popular than any lingerie line.

DECEMBER 16-31, 2010 TULIP 35

Do I sound very not so from this generation types? But, this is exactly the way most of us are turning out to love and live for a kill! I recall a certain movie scene where partners celebrate their break up. So, the friends go around thinking what to wish them. “Happy Break Up or All the Best”. The question here is not “why is this happening”; the question is ‘for what’ this is happening. We love to live and live to love, so much so that our life is slowly turning out to be a collection of various paraphernalia’s, even our ‘loved ones’ are being accommodated amongst commodities and compared to in terms of the green paper. The element of love boils down to how much we can give and how much we more we can take from the other, someone quoted. But, I bet they would not have ever though that this degree would vary in terms of monetary and other benefits when some people ‘in love’ commit to even before they get married. So much for love, is it for the cause of love or money, I wonder. In India, even though the constitution has banned dowry, she has a new name- THE GIFT! So now-a- days the talk of the town is, kithney gift miley! Resounds like Gabbar Singh’s dialogue,”Kithne Aadmi the”! But again, why have we turned out to be like this? Why so much material matter does in an immaterial term called relationship. Yes, we need money, food, house to live, these are all priorities but can you weigh them against the weight of loving and living a person? I’m guessingthe answer is yes. It’s the truth, let’s accept, our pride, independence, financial stability has become the equivalent or i must say have begun complementing us, which is a kind of a good thing. The justification however is that. “ I don’t want to be a burden to my partner”. What they exactly mean is, “I don’t want to loose my independence in this relationship”. We all love it, life minus all commitment and relationships! (I dream of this every day and night) But, still we long for someone to love us and to be loved. How is that, possible? If I have to envision the above mentioned state, I will have a cartoon man running in full speed towards the Love board and Running back in full speed away from the relationship board! Arrey baba! Such a complicated thing, I say love is! Looks like I’m the blind woman who is trying balance between the two balances- Love and Relationship. No wonder! It keep’s on doing the dancing act. Oh! And I have a two left feet to top it all! Now the heart of the relationship is the heart itself. We try hard not to give in, but alas! We do . A tricky thing I must say, but wonder how does this heart get to love multiple people at the same time upholding multiple relationships of the same kind. Do you see what I see here? No! Its simple how does a person live a polygamist’s life minus the marriage part. This is where, I begin to ponder, how an affair comes into scene? Or how is 36 TULIP DECEMBER 16-31, 2010

anyone and everyone ok with two wives or two husbands (never heard of, believe me, this exists, believe me!).This too is a complicated relationship. I mean, how does a person, have the same kind of relationship with two people? That, my friend, is true talent or like they say multi-loving and living status. Quite a task! Imagine the capacity of that person in all the 360 degree matter of life. As I state this, I recall this reality show “Emotional Atyachaar”, it is proven, and that you’re partner is cheating. Mind it! You have a sexy damsel wooing the guy or a hot hunk wooing the girl. The plot-to prove your partner is a cheater , no matter what and then when all the dhajjee udaaofi has been done, they all cry, they even manage to get the folks and ask their esteemed insights about their child’s relationship and walk away with pride or I must say, their 15 minutes of fame on the idiot box. And, somehow, we also see our own Bollywood’s Khan’s and Kapoor’s being part for it. When I hear them talk and take part in this, I think the aam jaanta or the so called ‘mango people’ are much smarter than our stars. They get their 15 mins of fame, what difference do the stars get. They anyways shine at all the right places for all the wrong reasons or take it vice-versa. Oh! I forgot they have no loss… any publicity is definitely good publicity. So relationships can be pointed out as a reason of publicity! (Now, you my friend will agree to me) If I have to think of the way God created man, how must have he woven the existence of relationships? For my teeny weeny brain say’s -A Web! Take a look around you, our relationships with family, friends and professional colleagues and yet, we always end up into a knot when it comes to people whom we love the most-our girl, our guy, husband or wife. In relationship with the above, why do we hate to love and love to hate them? Guess, we can never get the right answer to this question. And still, since we say we live the Indian traditional way, we try so hard to look happy like one of the ‘K’ serials. There are people who actually love to imagine having a family portrait like every opening scene of the famous ‘K’serials. Wish, I could ask them, what they think of the relationships, where the husband loves his wife during one phase of his life and loves the other in the other phase with a different face. So much confusion to explain the pavithra rishtha or bandhan, PHEW! It’s surprising how the society accepts and rejects such social being. I always am appalled by the flexibility of it. On one side they say no to inter caste relationships and on the other hand they are perfectly ok about it. It’s such confusion, that I myself think, that the whole society is incoherent. There are famous people and they are people who become famous through the relationships, they tag along. The way the other’s love and live may not matter to you. But, guess what, it inevitably will influence you. Because, we all live and dwell in a society, where we meet and match.

AUTOMOBILES

Ladies for the Ladies

By Ashwin Balakrishnan

The automotive world is a traditional male domain. Every aspect, from manufacturing to owning and racing, has been and will remain core curriculum stuff in Manliness 101. Yet for some reason, we still refer to cars as females. She’s got a brand new turbocharger. She goes from 0-100 in under eight seconds. I don’t feel comfortable giving you her keys. We even talk to cars like we talk to girls, calling them baby and begging them, ever so sweetly, to go that last kilometer before completely emptying out on fuel. You could own a turbocharged 880-horsepower Shelby Mustang GT500 with a reinforced iron body kit; you’ll still brag about her to your buddies. What, then, constitutes that segment of cars guys call “girly” and prefer to leave to the two-legged girls in our lives? TULIP looks at the top five most feminine cars in production today and why they tend to be owned by the fairer sex.

Lexus SC430 The SC430 comes in at the top of the list solely because it has an engine no guy would be ashamed of owning. The 4.3L V8 is taken from Lexus’ LS line of sedans and puts out 288 horses and 430 Nm of torque. Impressive, but the muscle stops here. The car is decked out with girly bits. The list includes a convertible hardtop that hides away in just 25 seconds, interior paint schemes with names like Orange Honey and Oak Birch, and exclusively automatic transmission. As if these weren’t strong enough to deter guys, the SC430 is a favourite of Paris Hilton, Jennifer Aniston, and Jessica Simpson. Did I mention Paris Hilton?

AUTOMOBILES

Toyota Prius No man should be caught driving a Prius unless he is either: A. an employee of any global environmental agency; B. the son of a Toyota executive who got his car for free; or C. a celebrity who needs to appear environmentally-conscious in the name of publicity. Women, however, look adorable and attractive driving a Prius. Not only will guys respect you for caring about the ozone layer, we’ll love that you have a decent enough bank balance to pay for dinner occasionally. On a serious note, the Prius design is very female-friendly. The panels and dashboard are easy to read and manipulate, the gear stick is raised so as to facilitate easy shifting while you apply makeup on the road, and the on-board GPS will try to make sure you don’t get lost (if you listen to it).

Mazda MX-5 Miata The Miata is everything a woman wants in a car: easy to handle, easy to maintain, and easy to crash… I mean fun to drive. The Miata has a higher center of gravity, making it less agile through corners but more stable at reasonable speeds. Most variants are convertible, and the car exudes a feminine aura with the top down. It puts quite the sparkle in a day-today commute and is the perfect getaway vehicle for a romantic weekend holiday for two. The Miata being a wonderful choice for a lady driver and everything the gender expects from their ride, seldom will you see a man within inches of signing on the dotted line for one.

AUTOMOBILES

Mini Cooper The Cooper is manufactured by BMW-owned MINI and is a favourite among Europeans, especially those living in smaller towns and villages with narrow roads. It comes in standard coupe and hardtop convertible models, both sharing the same 1.6L engine that puts out nearly 120 horses. Clubman and S variants kits are also available to boost performance. The Cooper sports a fairly brisk engine for a car its size and has got the looks that appeal to women: small, cute, adorable, and button-like. By merit of its stature and availability of several bright colours which would make most guys cringe, the MINI Cooper tops out at number two on the list.

Volkswagen New Beetle The most feminine car on this list is the New Beetle, re-introduced to the market in 1998 by Volkswagen. That’s right, Volkswagen; the same group that owns Audi, Bentley, Bugatti, and Lamborghini. Small, compact, and stylish, the New Beetle instantly became a hit with women and hippies everywhere. Women celebrated the advent of a car designed specifically for them, complete with the high-tech German automotive and safety technology possessed by superior brands and models. Hippies celebrated one last chance to relive the 60s before all that drug use conked them out for good. Regardless, the New Beetle was a significant mark in automotive history. For the first time in history, a car was designed to be cute and bulbous, with women and hippies (seriously) as the target audience. The New Beetle was a turn-of-themillennium symbol of increasing female empowerment and remains a global favourite of the fairer sex.

Disclaimer: This article is meant to be observational and humourous, not sexist. The writer loves his mother very much and respects women. 44 TULIP DECEMBER 16-31, 2010

PETS

Getting close to Pets The dog is a domesticated form of the gray wolf, a member of the Canidae family of the order Carnivora. The word “dog” may also mean the male of a canine species, as opposed to the word “bitch” for the female of the species. Dogs perform many roles for people, such as hunting, herding, protection, assisting police and military, companionship, and, more recently, aiding handicapped individuals. This versatility, more than probably any other known animal, has given them the nickname “Man’s best friend” in the western world

POPULAR BREEDS

Beagles, great danes, Labrador, boxer, bull dogs, Pomeranians, hayanese, pugs, rottweilers, dachshunds, Dalmatians, Doberman, german shepherd, golden retrievers to name a few.

HOW TO CHOOSE A DOG

When choosing a dog it is important to examine your personal circumstance (e.g. home life, how much time available for the dog, children) and mesh them with a dog who has the appropriate temperament and requires the level of care that you can provide. Here are some questions to ask yourself before you choose pet. l How much space do you have? l How much exercise and care time do you have for the dog l What size is good? l Where is the dog going to be living? l How much grooming do you want to do? l Do you have the experience to deal with a more challenging dog? l If you have children how will the dog be with them?

DOG GROOMING

A good looking pet dog no doubt qualifies to be ‘the neighbour’s envy and owner’s pride’ In general, dog breeds in India do not enjoy the kind of care that their counterparts in other parts of the world do. Concepts such as a dental floss for dogs may come as an absolute shock for some of us while these are accepted norms elsewhere.

DOG HEALTH AND CARE

Bringing in a dog to complete your family comes with additional responsibility in terms of ensuring that your dog continues to be in the pink of health at all times. Many a time, they require all the time and care you can give them to ensure that they remain so. As is the case with anything else, the popular adage ‘prevention is better than cure’ applies well to dogs. Regular interaction with your pet dog will ensure that you notice even the slightest signs of a possible problem at the very early stage besides being able to use every opportunity to bond better with your pet.

SPECIFIC FOOD HAZARDS

One must be careful when feeding dogs holiday food items. It is never recommended to feed a dog table scraps. Keep the following foods away from your dog’s dish: l chocolate l onions l garlic l caffeine l pork products l mushrooms l walnuts l artificial sweeteners l fruit seeds and pits Any dish containing just a small amount of the above items can be extremely harmful to your dog. Christmas is here

By Neehara Sanjivi

y Ch ristmas Da n o s ll e b e h “I hea rd t ca rols play, r a ili m a f , ld o Their rds repeat o w e h t t e e sw And wild and ! “ d-will to men o o g , h t r a e n Of peace o Longfellow h t r o w s d a W - Hen ry It is that time of the year again when kids are on their best behavior for the presents that Santa will bring them, the adults are busy preparing sweets and shopping for the whole family and you basically have everyone gearing up for the one holiday that is celebrated with immense enthusiasm all over the world. It is indeed a deeply “religious” time where everyone visits the mall of their choice! Yes! Christmas season is here and as time has gone by, it no longer remains a festival that is celebrated by the Christians alone- it is now a national holiday in almost every country and is celebrated by everyone regardless of their religious backgrounds.

December 25th is the day that marks the birth of Jesus Christ in a stable in Bethlehem over two thousand years ago. As the biblical story has it, one cold winter’s night, the Son of God was born to save mankind from sin. He was visited by shepherds and the magi who found him by following the star that led them

Christmas! The very word brings joy to our hearts. No matter how we may dread the rush, the long Christmas lists for gifts and cards to be bought and given -when Christmas Day comes there is still the same warm feeling we had when we were children.

to the place where baby Jesus slept peacefully. It is one of the most important festivals of the Christians and the day begins with the special Christmas services in church with messages of faith, hope and charity – which is precisely what this day stands for. Christmas is no longer viewed merely as the day that commemorates the birth of Jesus but with the passage of time it has begun to stand for so much more! 46 TULIP DECEMBER 16-31, 2010

There are so many traditions that are followed and passed down through centuries- while the preparation and distribution of sweets is largely an Indian tradition, the decoration of a Christmas tree, the stockings and Santa Claus are aspects of the season that have been passed on from one generation to the other over centuries.

Preparations for Christmas start almost a month in advance! Right from shopping for new clothes to shopping for ingredients for the sweets – the minute December arrives, it is one big rollercoaster ride of work, music, food and of course lots of fun. The distribution of sweets is a very prominent feature of this festive season. This tradition is followed mostly in India since sweets are distributed at most of the festivals as a mark of an auspicious day. Cakes, cookies and various other sweets that are synonymous with Christmas celebrations are prepared in advance and it is also a practice that gets the entire family to spend some time together and have some fun. In most homes, sweets are prepared with all members of the family that add their contribution to it along with the chatter and the Christmas carols that add to the festive spirit.

Come December and decorations in the cheerful colors of red green and gold can be seen everywhere. Decorating the Christmas tree is something that everyone enjoys and looks forward to. It most definitely brings out the creative side in everyone! Lights, streamers and beautiful ornaments that represent this sparkling festival are added to each branch of the tree. The Christmas tree in every house whether decorated simply or very elaborately is always the first thing that gets noticed.

TULIP REGULARS

The story of the Christmas tree dates back to the 16th century when a German man, Martin Luther is said to have cut a fir tree from his garden one wintry Christmas Eve and placed it in the nursery of his home for his wife and children. He wanted to show them the great beauty of the snowy, dark night of the celebration of Jesus’ birth, and he decorated the little tree with lighted candles, to represent the stars. But the association of trees with Christmas is much, much older. In the tenth century a beautiful story spread through Europe. It is supposed to have been told by an Arabian named George Jacob, and became a legend. On the night that Christ was born, so the story goes, all the trees in all the forests - even those in frozen countries blossomed for one night, and bore fruit! (There’s a story that a lot of people don’t know!) There are so many more stories and legends that surround the Christmas tree that differ from place to place.

There are several other Christmas traditions and practices that most of us don’t bother to question because of the time that has passed since their inception but each of these traditions like the exchanging of gifts and the decorations have interesting stories behind them

DECEMBER 16-31, 2010 TULIP 47

The reason why people started singing at Christmas time came from the idea that angels sang when they appeared to the shepherds at Bethlehem to announce Jesus Christ’s birth. Various choirs stage the much awaited Christmas concert that they put in months of practice into. Carolers go around from house to house singing Christmas carols that really brings everyone into the Christmassy mood!

Take for instance the stockings that are hung on Christmas eve and filled with gifts when you wake up on Christmas morning- The tradition of hanging stockings on Christmas Eve has its origins in one of the many legends that surround Nicholas, the saintly Bishop of Myra. One evening, three marriageable daughters of a poor nobleman hung their stockings on the fireplace to dry. Out of compassion for the girls, Nicholas threw little bags of gold coins down the chimney, which happened to land in the stockings. And so Nicholas provided the girls with a dowry and they were eventually able to marry. Hundreds of years later like all traditions that are tweaked here and there, stockings are hung around the house as curios and a place to put in surprise presents for children and adults alike. The most famous and universal of the figures in modern celebration of Christmas worldwide is Saint Nicholas or Santa Claus, a mythical gift bringer, dressed in red, whose origins have diverse sources. Saint Nicholas traditionally appeared in bishop’s attire, accompanied by helpers, and enquired about the behavior of children during the past year before deciding whether they deserved a gift or not. And to this day kids believe that if they are on their best behavior, Santa would creep into their houses at night to bring them what they asked for.

Christmas time is a time when people do a lot of charity work. Many people make their contribution to the less fortunate. Charity gifts during Christmas season are their way of saying thank you for all the blessings that one has received. Christmas only comes once a year. Letting other people feel what Christmas is like giving them small things that can make them smile. In different businesses, communities, schools and nations have Christmas dances and parties in the weeks before this festival. Christmas shows can contain a retelling of the tale of Christ’s birth. What would Christmas or any celebration be like if there wasn’t any music to add to the festivities? 48 TULIP DECEMBER 16-31, 2010

It is that one time of the year that brings everyone together to share a great meal. It is also the only time of the year where nobody makes any excuses to spend time with the family. Work and travel plans are put on hold just so one can spend some quality time with family. At Christmas, all roads lead home. Setting aside all the physical aspects of the festival, it is the simple joy of spending time with loved ones that is the biggest and best way to celebrate Christmas.

Celebrating has nothing to do with spending a lot of money and having elaborate parties. Our biggest celebrations are the most personal ones spent with people whose company we love. A simple thing as watching a beautiful Christmas movie with a special someone can be all it takes. Or maybe share a home cooked meal with friends in front of the decorated Christmas tree. For years to come Christmas will always give people the same feeling that it does now. The traditions and practices maybe improvised but the essence of this day will never change. Whatever the practices associated with it, Christmas continues to be the most universally celebrated holiday around the globe, transcending language, culture, and even religious beliefs.

Wishing you all a Merry Christmas

THE NOKIA E7 - twice the fun

By Hassan Ali

Looking for a new phone, a smart trendy one with all the features? I’m sure you will want to throw away your iphone 4 after you read this. A 4 inch large AMOLED screen with 8mp camera which has xenon flash light and a built in 16 GB memory and millions of applications supported NOKia E7 is surely going to take the market by storm. The Nokia E7 is a smartphone with slide-out QWERTY keyboard, full touchscreen, the new Symbian^3 operating system, and a feature list so extensive, you’ll find it hard to believe what Nokia have managed to cram into its small(ish!) dimensions. As you can see in the picture, its QWERTY keyboard runs the full length of the phone and snaps out in a similar way to the ill-fated Nokia N97 of last year. The E7’s keyboard is much better, though, and the phone looks much cooler than its predecessor, too, as it’s based on Nokia’s new smartphone design, prominently shown on the Nokia N8. The front is dominated by a large 4” OLED screen that a Nokia rep on the floor confirmed as a CBD (clear black display) type. Whether this is true or not remains to be seen, but the screen is colourful and had excellent contrast and black levels. Despite having a resolution of 640×360 (lower than high end Android devices and iPhone 4), the display looks sharp. Like the N97’s keypad, the E7’s keypad slides up and is tilted a little forward. The four row keypad is a welcomed improvement over the N97’s three row keypad. A five row keypad would have been better but I can’t see any physical space for an extra numerical row. At least it has a proper space bar. I have my reservations on the key travel and having played with the HTC Desire Z, Nokia need to improve the tactile feedback of the E7’s keyboard. But apart from this flaw this slim sleek phone will surely win your hearts, you thought iphone 4 was a revolution then get ready to have an all new experience with this baby. For me it’s a full 5 on 5 for the phone, just waiting for its launch. It, it will cost around between twentytwenty five thousand which is a plus point as you are getting so much spending so less. And the release date is sometime mid December or early January so all you Smartphone savvy people here you have the verdict take it or regret it.

SPA-CIAL

Take sabbaticals from work and from the frenzy day to day living. TULIP reviews a spa that will interest you and convince you to indulge in its pampering. Located in the busy Jubilee Hills, the Fifth Element Thai Spa is known for its authentic Thai massages. Having trained masseuses from Thailand you can never go wrong with their treatments. I signed up for their signature fifth element spa which was a soothing massage to release tension, knotted muscles and smoothen skin. The staff welcomed me with their signature tamarind and honey juice which is good for its digestion properties. The spa interiors are mediumistic and represent a mix of serenity and calmness. I walk inside the massage room to find blue walls with Thai paintings, scented candles & incense sticks lighted up in a corner along with some soft music. The masseuse washes my feet with some tamarind seed paste (Tamarind seed extract contains high levels of AHA which is of great benefit in skin care. Studies have shown that tamarind seed extract significantly improves skin elasticity, hydration and smoothness) and lukewarm water after which I’m led to the massage bed. The session starts with gliding strokes of thumb and palm to soothe tensed muscles, also the masseuse uses her feet to control certain points. Aromatic eucalyptus oil is rubbed all over to tighten the skin and give you radiance like never before. Eucalyptus oil known for its medicinal properties relieves discomforts and has therapeutic benefits. Every area - the neck, back, stomach, hands, thighs, legs, eyes and head are given pre-

cise steps and rubs. The pressure decreases when it comes to the spinal cord and eyes and increases when the strokes find their way to the back or feet. The one hour timed massage helps you leave with a refreshing mood. After the massage you can request for a hot towel wipe or help yourself with their in-built hot shower. If your skin is extremely dry I suggest you leave the oil on. The treatment is finished with intake of sparkling water and pieces of pineapple. The spa is also known for its salon treatments, facial massages, nourishing wraps and polishing scrubs. The Thai wrap using fresh Thai herbs (Lemon grass, Kafir lime, Ginger, Turmeric, Southern seaweed and Tamarind), white mud and milk along with a sesame softening scrub(Honey and sesame mixture is applied through your whole body and an invigorating body scrub is given to refresh and detoxify ) is recommended for those who want some more pampering. The massages here are particularly relaxing, as they have a signature style of their own. And that’s very slow with a continuous touch. It’s amazing how this slight variation on the norm makes such a world of difference. I recommend the signature massage for the feminine in you and say it’s worth a splurge. MAGICAL OOTY Ooty, short for Ootacamund is a popular hill resort in the state of Tamil Nadu in Southern India. Ooty stands at 7,347 feet above sea level in the Nilgiri mountain range. It was founded in the 19th century by the British, and served as the summer headquarters of the Madras Presidency. Located in the mountainous range called the Nilgiris (“Blue Mountains”), it draws swarms of tourists every year. The weather is quite pleasant at a mean of 15-20°C around the year, dropping to lows of 4°C during winter. The landscape is marked by rolling hills covered with dense vegetation, smaller hills and plateaus covered with tea gardens, and eucalyptus trees. Many portions of the hills are preserved as natural reserve forests, and special permits will be needed to camp in non camp sites. Ooty is not the destination in itself, as much as it is the focal point of attraction. Auto touring the surrounding country side is certainly a must do. Unfortunately, the hill town suffers from overcrowding and erosion of natural resources. Tourism has placed an enormous strain on the natural resources resulting in pollution, water shortage and roads. The hilly region also houses smaller towns like Coonoor and Kotagiri. These

Ooty lake the famous Ooty Lake stretches, in an irregular ‘L’ shape, for about two kilometres in length and varrying distances in width. At the far end is the Boat House where all kinds of boats are available for hire from eight in the morning to six in the evening. During summer seasons, in May, boat races and boat pageantry are organised on two days at the lake which draw huge crowds. In recent years the lake and the boat house have become the hub of entertainment for the visitors. At the boat house end there is children’s park with a toytrain. Mini Garden

This garden was laid out in 1847 by the Marquis of Tweedale and is spread over 55 acres. Lush green well maintained lawns, rare tree species (like the cork tree which is probably the only such tree in India, the paper bark tree and the monkey puzzle tree - monkeys cannot climb this tree), a 20 million year old fossilized tree, an Italian-style garden bordering a clear pool, a vast variety of flowering bushes and plants in myriad hues (exotic and ornamental), fern house with a vast range of ferns and orchids, are some of the many highlights of this garden. A flower show along with an exhibition of rare plant species is held every year in the month of May at this garden.

Tourists can visit this mini garden which is on the way to Boathouse. There is also a Children’s amusement park. A snack bar is also available. Tamil Nadu Tourism Development Corporation Limited maintains it.

Rose Garden Located less than a km from Charring Cross, the rose garden is laid on 10 acres of land. The garden has a collection of more than 1000 varieties of roses.

Doddabetta The Dodabetta Peak stands at an altitude of 2,623 meters. It is the highest point in the district, making it possibly the best vantage point around Ooty. It is merely 10km from Ooty so you can simply grab your camera and head straight to the peak, and click amazing pictures of he valley below. Many say that on a clear day, which is honestly not that often, one can see far off areas, even the plains of Coimbatore and the flat highlands of Mysore.
