McNEESE OPENS HOME SEASON AGAINST UIW

• This Saturday, Feb. 27, will mark exactly 6 months to the day when Hurricane Laura changed the landscape of McNeese State University, Lake Charles and Southwest Louisiana when its 150 mph sustained winds barreled through the region in the early morning hours of August 27. • McNeese will play its first-ever spring season game in Cowboy Stadium on Saturday at noon against UIW and the first home game overall since Nov. 2, 2019 when it defeated Northwestern State by a 30-20 score. • The Cowboys have posted a 43-12 record in “The Hole” over the last 10 seasons and are 2-0 at home against UIW, winning 55-7 in 2017 and 43-6 in 2015.

• Orgeron, the league’s offensive player of the week, accounted for all five of the Cowboys’ touchdowns in a thrilling 40-37 overtime victory over Tarleton State on Feb. 13. • He recorded 278 total offensive yards - 170 passing (14 for 34, 3 TDs) and 108 rushing (19 carries, 2 TDs). • Trailing by 14 with just under three minutes remaining, Orgeron connected with Mason Pierce for a 26-yard touchdown to cut the Texans’ lead in half. After McNeese recovered the onside kick, Orgeron found Trevor Begue in the endzone with 35 ticks on the clock to send the game into overtime. The heroics continued for Orgeron as he dashed 19 yards for the winning score in the second overtime period. • Orgeron was also named Stats Perform National Offensive POW honorable mention. • Abel scored 10 points for the Cowboys against TSU in picking up the special teams POW honor. • The junior transfer connected on all four PAT tries and two field goals, both from 21 yards out. • His 2nd 21-yard field goal came in the first overtime period while he sailed through two crucial PATs with under three minutes to play, the second coming with 35 seconds remaining in regulation to send the game into overtime.

• First year head coach Frank Wilson took over the helm on January 16, 2020 to become McNeese’s 17th head coach in school history, got his first win as the Cowboy head coach in the Feb. 13, thrilling 40-37 double-ot win against Tarleton State. • It had been 394 days since his hiring when the Cowboys took the field.

PANDEMIC, HURRICANES, WINTER STORM NOT STANDING IN COWBOYS’ WAY

• Prior to the Feb. 13 opener at Tarleton State, McNeese’s last game of competition was back on Nov. 23, 2019 against Lamar, and due to the global pandemic and two major hurricanes - Laura and Delta - the Cowboys did not play any games during the fall of 2020. In fact, unlike every other FCS team playing this spring who had a fall offseason program, McNeese was without any kind of weight or conditioning program and as spread out around the region due to no housing in Lake Charles as a result of the extensive hurricane damage. • After the hurricanes, McNeese was not able to return to Lake Charles as a team until mid-November 2020 and took up residence at a local hotel for the next 6080 days. • Facilities on campus were too damaged to conduct any kind of training so the Cowboys held weight training and conditioning drills at a local high school until the team was able to return to its facility the second week of January. • Damage to McNeese State University exceeds $200 million with much of that to the athletic facilities. • Cowboy Stadium had to have its 3-year old turf replaced and was 3-feet underwather due to the rains of Hurricane Delta... the three-level press box is totaled and will have to be replaced... most of the football team and position meeting rooms were heavily damaged, forcing the Cowboys to use the Endzone Club Room on the second level of the field house as a make-shift team meeting room. • Last week, the off week, a winter storm caused water outages so the Cowboys were not able to get any practice time in.

• McNeese entered the spring season with 15 straight winning seasons under its belt, the longest current streak in the FCS. • The Cowboys have compiled a 113-57 (.665) record during the winning season streak with four Southland Conference titles and five FCS playoff appearances. • The Cowboys have won 7 or more games five out of the last eight seasons and have recorded 10 wins twice (2013, 2015) during that stretch. • Since 2000, McNeese has produced 8 or more wins nine times.

ORGERON RETURNS TO LEAD OFFENSE

• Quarterback Cody Orgeron rushed for a career-high 108 yards at Tarleton in the season opener, becoming the first McNeese QB to break the century mark rushing since Daniel Sams in Nov. of 2015. • The son of LSU head coach Ed Orgeron, Cody has thrown for 2,946 yards in his career, ranking 13th on the career list. • He needs just 54 passing yards to become only the 11th player in school history to throw for 3,000 yards in a career. • Set a single-game school record in 2019 with 403 total offensive yards against Central Arkansas (344 passing, 59 rushing). • 506 total plays in 2019 set a new school record. • Recorded 3,110 total offensive yards in 2019 - 2,628 passing and 482 rushing, and 27 total TDs. MAKING THE GRADE

• Despite having to do studies virtually in the fall, the Cowboys posted a 3.2 semester grade point average and had 11 football student-athletes compile a 4.0 GPA. • This year’s roster has nine players who have already earned their bachelor’s degree: QB Cody Orgeron, WR Trevor Begue, DL Camron Peterson, DL Isaiah Chambers, TE Jamal Pettigrew, P Bailey Raborn, LB Kordell Williams, DB Gabe Foster, RB Elijah Mack.

McNeese named Frank Wilson its 17th head coach on Jan. 16, 2020, as he becomes the first AfricanAmerican head football coach in school history and the second in the history of the Southland Conference. The New Orleans native, who is widely considered one of the top recruiters in college football, comes to McNeese after spending the prior four seasons as the head coach at UTSA. Wilson’s debut campaign at UTSA made history as he led the Roadrunners to six wins and the 2016 Gildan New Mexico Bowl to match the NCAA modern startup program record by reaching a bowl game in just their sixth season. From 2005-07, Wilson served as the running backs/assistant special teams coach at Mississippi, where he recruited prominent future NFL stars Kendrick Lewis and Mike Wallace. He also developed a first-team all-conference running back in Green-Ellis. Wilson joined the Rebels’ staff after serving one year as director of athletics for the New Orleans Public School System after spending three-and-a-half seasons as head football coach and offensive coordinator at O. Perry Walker High School. Wilson led O. Perry Walker to two District 10-4A championships and the Louisiana Class 4A State Championship game in 2002. He was honored by the NFL as the 2002 Louisiana Coach of the Year and was voted by his peers as the Louisiana Class 4A Coach of the Year. Wilson also was a finalist for the 2002 Nike National Coach of the Year. During his head coaching stint at O. Perry Walker, Wilson developed 22 players who earned Division I scholarships, including 11 in 2002 to rank as the nation’s largest high school class of D-I signees. The 2002 team defeated national-power John Curtis Christian School, 20-0, during the regular season, which snapped a 136-game district winning streak for John Curtis and marked the first time that team had failed to score in 303 consecutive games, a national record. Wilson spent three years as an assistant coach at Edna Karr High School, also in New Orleans, from 1997-2000. He served as offensive coordinator at Edna Karr during the 1999 season in which the team reached the Class 3A state finals and recorded its best statistical season on offense in the program’s history. Wilson got his start in coaching as a student assistant at his alma mater, Nicholls State University, working with the running backs while he finished his degree. While in Thibodaux, Wilson helped coach the first 1,000-yard rusher in school history and was part of the biggest turnaround in NCAA history at the time for the Colonels, who improved from 0-10 in 1995 to 8-2 in 1996. A three-year letterman at Nicholls State, Wilson earned honorable mention all-conference honors as a running back his sophomore year. Wilson attended Geneva University in Beaver Falls, Pa., his freshman season, earning conference Freshman of the Year honors as a running back and kick returner. He also earned first team all-conference honors and was an honorable mention NAIA Division II All-American. Wilson received his bachelor of arts degree in general education from Nicholls State in 1997. Wilson and his wife, Tiffany, have three children: Alaina, Sabree and Frank IV.
