Branson, VG crew complete suborbital space flight

In 2004, British billionaire Richard Branson proclaimed he would fly into space on his company’s spaceship in just three years to kick off what he hoped would become a routine travel experience, drinks and all.
Nearly 17 years after that proclamation, he finally did it.
Branson, along with five other Virgin Galactic employees – two pilots and three others who were testing parts of the in-cabin experience, including research opportunities – launched to suborbital space Sunday on the company’s first flight with a full crew aboard. The carrier aircraft with the spaceship attached to its belly took off around 7:40 a.m. Pacific time from a New Mexico spaceport near the city of Truth or Consequences.
The crewed flight marks a shift years in the making, as companies edge into launching recreational trips to space – efforts they hope will eventually prove profitable. The flashy, Branson-flavored Virgin Galactic event – with a livestream hosted by late-night host Stephen Colbert and a concert by singer Khalid – aimed to See Space, Page A7

Death toll rises to 90 in Surfside

SURFSIDE, Fla. — Search crews have discovered an additional four victims of the Surfside condominium collapse, Miami-Dade Mayor Daniella Levine Cava announced Sunday, bringing the confirmed death toll from the June 24 catastrophe to 90 with a remaining list of 31 people feared lost under the rubble.
Police also released the identities of 10 victims found during the week, including three children ages 5, 6 and 9.
The newly discovered victims announced Sunday were not identified at the daily media briefing that marked the 18th day of the search effort and the fourth since the county-led operation shifted from rescue mode to recovery.
Levine Cava announced July 7 that there was no hope of finding anyone alive in the debris from the 12-story oceanfront condominium tower, a decision that shifted the debris site from a rescue operation run by the county fire department to a death investigation overseen by Miami-Dade Police.

VACAVILLE — RC Week took on a different meaning at Camp Adobe this week.
While the thought was to share remote control vehicles, the campers also got to interact with a real police canine, Grizz, a 7-year-old German shepherd/Labrador mix.
Grizz was under the command of Solano County sheriff’s Deputy Mark Demarest.
The dog playfully interacted with campers, who tossed many a tennissize ball for Grizz to chase, pick up and return.

San Diego Zoo racing to save some of city’s rarest butterflies

SAN DIEGO — High up in the mountains of San Diego County, there are meadows with creeks and streams where some of San Diego’s rarest butterflies flutter from flower to flower.
But life isn’t as idyllic for the Laguna Mountains skipper as it may sound. These endangered butterflies have vanished from the very mountain range they were named after and are now only found on Palomar Mountain. Climate change, human activity and wildfires threaten to wipe them out altogether.
Ecologists and wildlife experts are trying to change that, with a coalition that includes the San Diego Zoo, U.S. Fish See Zoo, Page A7
