Democrat Staff Placerville police officers arrested a 20-year-old man on suspicion of robbery Monday. Shawn Horan allegedly stole from the AM/PM gas station on Forni Road in Placerville Dec. 6. “The victim, who is an employee, reported to officers that a male took an item from the store without paying,” states a Placerville Police Department press release. “The employee confronted the male, who reportedly brandished a semiautomatic handgun, which was in his waistband. The male then, without further provocation, removed the firearm from his waistband and pointed it at the ground near where the
vehicle stop was conducted by multiple Placerville police officers,” the release states, adding that two women were also in the vehicle, but they were uninvolved and released from the scene. Occupants were removed from the vehicle and the driver was positively identified as Shawn Horan. During a search while Horan was taken into custody, officers reportedly found a black, semiautomatic handgun concealed in the back waistband of his pants. “This firearm matched the description of the firearm used during the robbery,” the PPD confirmed. Horan was booked into the El Dorado County Jail in Placerville. His bail is set at $150,000.

Marian E. Pingel 1931 – 2020
Marian passed away on Nov. 15, at the age of 89. The youngest of four siblings, Marian was raised on her family’s dairy farm in Fairbury, Neb. Her daily chores included milking the cows and assisting her father with delivering their dairy products to local families. Marian graduated from Fairbury Junior College with a teaching credential and taught thirdgrade students. She met the love of her life, Robert Pingel, on a blind date. During their courtship Bob joined the U.S. Air Force and, prior to leaving for bootcamp, he proposed to Marian. When the Air Force assigned Bob to Hamilton AFB in Novato, Calif., Marian drove Bob’s Chevrolet from Nebraska to California. After her arrival, Bob and Marian were married in March 1951. They would raise three daughters; Patricia, Susanne and Carolyn in Northern California. During the mid-1960s, Marian began a career as a grocery clerk for the Safeway corporation in San Rafael, Calif. She loved her job and especially enjoyed interacting with the customers. After his military service, Bob was employed in the concrete/ building material industry and soon yearned to start his own company. In April 1979, Bob and Marian opened Sierra Ready-Mix, Inc. in Pollock Pines, Calif. A few years later, the business expanded and relocated to Placerville. Marian continued to work for Safeway stores in Cameron Park, Placerville and Pollock Pines to help support their new venture. By the mid ‘80s Marian retired from Safeway and joined the family business helping in the office and running errands to keep the big trucks rolling. She became famous for her homemade Christmas cookies and hot apple cider. Everyday during the holidays she would set up a table full of freshly made goodies for the employees, customers and suppliers to enjoy. Marian and Bob retired when the family sold Sierra Ready-Mix Inc. in 2000. She and Bob enjoyed new adventures traveling in their motorhome as well as making several trips abroad with friends. They were happiest spending time with family at their home in Placerville. Marian enjoyed a multitude of crafting projects. She had a creative, inquisitive and resourceful spirit and found great pleasure re-purposing objects into useful ornamentation. Although Marian had lived in California for 70 years, she considered herself a Nebraska farm girl at heart. Marian was preceded in death by her daughter Patricia in 2003. She is survived by her loving husband Bob, daughters Susanne and Carolyn, six grandchildren and 11 great-grandchildren. A private memorial service will be held at a future date.

“Catalytic converters contain precious and valuable metals such as platinum and palladium and are generally easy to steal,” the warning states. “Just a minute or so under your car to cut out your converter can result in significant gains for a thief.
