Local artist sifts through the ashes and RISES ABOVE

Carolyn S. Dyle Special to the Mountain Democrat

Matt Harline had a successful career as an electrical engineer, managing teams of engineers and developing computer systems. He and his wife Tricia had a beautiful home, a supportive family, abundant friends and a great career. He was looking forward to a summer bicycling adventure in 2016 he had planned for his Scout troop when he decided to go shopping for a new bicycle.

Matt always wore his helmet when riding his bike. But since he was only trying out a few bikes he didn’t wear one while riding in a vacated parking lot by the bicycle shop one fateful Saturday afternoon. On his third bike ride he caught a glimpse of a truck approaching from back lot. This was Matt’s last memory of that ride. The collision resulted in a traumatic brain injury.

Recovery and rehabilitation would be long and arduous. Matt knew he had reached a crossroad in life when he had to come to

terms with losing his successful engineering career.

The road forward

While Matt was in rehabilitation Tricia suggested drawing or painting to stay busy. Matt had always loved art and considered a career as an artist when he was young. Although he had been selected “outstanding artist” in his senior year of high school, he decided to keep art as a hobby and pursue a career in electrical engineering for its fi nancial security. Now Matt had time to focus on his art and fi nd solace in its beauty. The Harlines bought a home on 5 acres in Concow in Butte County one year after the injury. The new home had a separate workshop for an art studio, launching a new career. Matt “Oak Leaves and Acorn” by Matt Harline, 2018 created six paintings of Northern California lakes which were hung in conference room o ces of the company where he had worked prior to his accident, each named for a one of Northern ■ See HARLINE, page B5
