New poet laureate ready to hit the trail

News release

Arts and Culture El Dorado recently announced that Lara Gularte will serve as El Dorado County’s poet laureate, 202123. This post, officially appointed by a conferring institution, is bestowed on a noted poet to honor his or her body of work and to celebrate poetry as an art form.

Over the course of her two-year term Gularte will follow the Laureate Trail, a series of free poetry readings held at each of the El Dorado County public libraries. She will compose “occasional poems” to commemorate special public events and participate as a judge for Poetry Out Loud, Arts and Culture El Dorado’s annual poetry recitation competition for high school students. In addition, she will develop her own special Poetry Project — in this case, a series of community narratives that celebrate the expression of our common humanity through poetry.

“Poetry speaks to our universal values. As poet laureate of El Dorado County, I will promote an environment of respect and connection among the people in our communities through the poetry of who we are and where we live,” said Gularte. “I believe when you inhabit a place there is a sense of continuity between past, present and future — and a relationship with the lives that live there. Poetry helps us see our world in a wider view and can be the catalyst that gathers us together to share our similarities and celebrate our differences. By telling our stories, telling the stories of the neighborhood, beyond the neighborhood, to something larger, we can honor our common humanity.”

Gularte hosts the popular Poetry of the Sierra Foothills monthly readings and is a member of the Red Fox Underground Poets, a longstanding local poetry writing group. Her book of poetry, “Kissing the Bee,” was published by The Bitter Oleander Press in 2018. Her forthcoming book, “Fourth World Woman,” published by Finishing Line Press, will be available January 2022.

Nominated for several Pushcart Prizes, she was a second-prize poetry winner for Empirical Magazine’s Poetry Contest. Published in national and international journals and anthologies, her poetry depicting her Azorean heritage is included in the “The Gávea-Brown Book of Portuguese-American Poetry.” She is affiliated with the Cagarro Colloquium: Azorian Diaspora Writers, at the Portuguese Beyond Borders Institute, California State University, Fresno. In 2017 Gularte traveled to Cuba with a delegation of American poets and presented her poetry at the Festival Internacional de Poesia de la Habana. She’s a proud member of the esteemed Escritores Del Nuevo Sol. Gularte is also a creative writing instructor for the California Transformative Arts program at Mule Creek prison.

WHAT MATTERS IN THE MORNING

by Lara Gularte

when light fills my window, and overflows the sun across my bed, I watch the mountains move closer, coming home with the daylight. A monarch flutters into the garden, rests on a hollyhock, peacefully opens its wings. I see something shimmer between the corn rows. It’s my father in old shoes and coveralls hoeing, tracking weeds along snail roads, standing up straight, head bent and focused on the endless furrows of his eighty six years. The sun shines greenly on his hands as he listens to roots inch deeper into earth, watches baby spiders hatch, flex their legs. When he sees me at the window I hold my hand up to wave, he holds his, we are palm to palm.

saureel Vineyards hosts summer nights concerts

News release

Kilt & Cork has announced the first in a series of concerts to be held at the beautiful Saureel Vineyards, 1140 Cold Springs Road in Placerville. Headlining the inaugural event on June 26 is the Golden Cadillacs, a band that features members from bands such as Jackie Greene, Dead Winter Carpenters, Tim Flannery, Jake Peavy and MerryGold. It has been said that the band’s harmony is a result of the members’ lifelong friendships.

Opening for the Golden Cadillacs is MerryGold, a local favorite that also features the haunting vocals of singer/ songwriter Jillian Secor. Its songs range from folk to bluegrass and feature abundant themes of the gold country.

Attendees should bring their own lawn chairs and small coolers with picnic items. Absolutely no glass is allowed in the venue. Small shade structures or umbrellas are encouraged as well, but no pop-up EZ up style tents. Kids are OK but no dogs are permitted on the property as it is a working horse ranch. Food, beer wine and cocktails will be available for purchase. The event is from 5-9 p.m.

“I just want to share this beautiful place with my community,” said venue owner Tim Sauer, from which the vineyard get’s its name. “This property is not just amazing ... it is Saureel,” he continued, pronouncing Saureel like surreal.

Saureel Vineyards is a working horse ranch and vineyard. The harvest is sold so there is no tasting room or winemaking facility on the property. But Saureel envisions the property, which includes a beautifully appointed air B&B, as an events venue that can host weddings, fundraisers and concerts throughout the year. Its signature lake has the concert venue adjacent to it offering amazing views and memorable sunsets.

“I love partnering with Tim, as he is as enthusiastic about music as I am and we want to showcase the best entertainment possible at this venue,” said event producer Russ Reyes from Kilt & Cork. “The event and entertainment industry
