Welp, they finally did it. After years of audiences glibly asking if the “Fast and the Furious” franchise would eventually become devoid of enough ideas on the ground to end up in outer space they actually did it in “F9: The Fast Saga.” The ninth (10th of you count the 2019 spinoff “Hobbs & Shaw”) entry in the entertaining but lowrent version of the “Mission: Impossible” franchise finds our heroes leaving the atmosphere in a Pontiac Fiero to stop a weapon that might assist the bad guys in taking over the world.
If this sounds absurd it is. I’m aware that the “Fast” franchise has prided itself on absurdity for several movies now. If you ask fans of the franchise they’ll tell you that the filmmakers have always towed the line between reality and absurdity carefully, coming close to the line but never crossing it. They cross it several times in this new film. The issue isn’t the ridiculous stunts or action set pieces. Those are fine. We all love an insane action sequence, however improbable, to enjoy with our popcorn. The problem lies when a sequence is so ridiculous that it takes you out of the movie. This happened a few times in director Justin Lin’s “F9: The Fast Saga.”
Case in point: as our hero’s escape an insurmountable amount of helicopter gunfire around their vehicle they spot a bridge that leads to the border of the neighboring country and certain safety. If you take one look at that bridge you will know that it is not meant for a vehicle of this size (or any vehicle for that matter). I’m talking the bridge at the end of “Indiana Jones and the Temple of Doom” (1984) type scary!
One would figure if you are going to have characters be crazy enough to cross said bridge in a heavy vehicle you could at least have the car make it 90% across before it starts breaking and falling into the water. Still plenty of time to build some suspense. Not in “F9.” No way. The car makes it about halfway across the bridge when it begins to break and fall, leaving our super-car to vertically speed straight up the side of the cliff and
jump over the edge to safety. Thank goodness everyone is OK! That is just the first gravity-defying feat to throw you out of the film. There are others, culminating in the aforementioned space-car adventure but despite the Joshua B. Porter absurdity, this action film still lives and dies by the
Democrat correspondent creed of all motion pictures: is it entertaining? It is, in parts. The 1980s NASCAR flashback with a couple main characters in their youth is a neat switch for this franchise. I would have actually enjoyed it if the film stayed in that time period a bit longer. The film drags significantly in the mid-section as it catches up with old characters, re-introduces long-thought dead ones and randomly introduces others. If you are going to dare to be absurd let’s get to the good stuff! Truth be told the second half is much better than the first, where it begins to drag after the opening sequences. Once the big final action sequences are put in motion things get a lot more exciting, at least on Earth. Everything on the ground with Vin Diesel’s Dominic Toretto and team works and is a lot of fun. Every time they cut back up to that
