Welcome to this historic football game. Tonight will be a memorable moment in the history of Catholic Memorial Thanksgiving Day football as we once again host Boston College High School here at Fenway Park. We’d like to offer a very special thank you to the Boston Red Sox and Fenway Park for offering this incredible opportunity for two great Catholic Conference rivals to compete for the Pumpkin Trophy as part of the Fenway Gridiron Series. While we are here to watch a football game and revel in the spirit of this event, we remember to give thanks and appreciation to the dedicated and hard-working coaches and athletes who have prepared for this game. The support and generosity of our alumni, parents, grandparents, and friends of CM allows us to live forth our mission, for which we are ever-grateful. We offer special thanks to the Edmund Rice Christian Brothers who founded CM 60 years ago, and whose charism continues to guide and inspire us. May the spirit of good sportsmanship, camaraderie, and competition be the hallmark of this wonderful and historic evening here at Fenway Park. Happy Thanksgiving!

Dr. Peter F. Folan President, Catholic Memorial School

CATHOLIC MEMORIAL ABOUT CM

Founded in 1957, Catholic Memorial is a college preparatory school for boys (7–12) founded in the spirit of Blessed Edmund Rice and guided by the Essential Elements of an Edmund Rice Christian Brothers Education. Our faith and learning community is dedicated to transforming boys’ lives through academics, arts, athletics, and campus ministry. We challenge students to pursue excellence, embrace Gospel values, and lead through service. We believe in learning through experience — with our forward-leaning STEM curriculum, with boy-specific pedagogy, and by forging relationships with students to inspire a deep love of learning. We are the smallest school in the Catholic Conference, which allows our faculty to engage more frequently with students in multiple settings.

OUR CAMPUS

Over the past four years, thanks to an incredible level of support from our donors, CM has invested more than $4 million into renovations of our school. The creation and addition of a cutting-edge Innovation Lab, middle school Maker Space, the Academic Resource Center, new Academic and College Counseling suite, new chemistry lab, and our unique hydroponic Freight Farm have added 21st-Century spaces that have enhanced our academic program. This fall, CM opened a new Student Commons, two 21st-Century seminar rooms, a middle school locker room, and a state-of-the-art Health and Wellness Center. This Health and Wellness Center is designed to enhance the sports medicine needs of our athletes and is staffed with a full-time athletic trainer and strength coach. The John Walsh ’61 Field House and track, along with a modern weight room, have created a performance center designed for high school athletes. These improvements have been transformational to our CM community.

BEYOND CM

FACULTY

Graduates attend Bates, Boston College, Bowdoin, Harvard, Holy Cross, Michigan, Middlebury College, New York University, Notre Dame, and Villanova. One-third of our graduating class enrolled in the most selective colleges and universities in the country and 41 CM graduates enrolled in our nation’s best Catholic colleges and universities. CM students also earned more than $11 million in scholarships and financial aid. 90 percent of our faculty hold advanced degrees and five hold doctorates. Our student/faculty ratio is 12:1.

There is nowhere like New England on Thanksgiving. In Massachusetts, high school football rivalry games are as much a part of the holiday as food and family. Three of these rivalries will be showcased this week at Fenway Park. For Catholic Memorial School this means competing for the Pumpkin Trophy in their yearly battle with Boston College High School. The teams first faced each other in a Junior Varsity match in 1960. The Knights defeated the Eagles 22-0, and the contest sparked one of the greatest rivalries in Massachusetts over the next 50 years. “The great Thanksgiving rivalry between Catholic Memorial and BC High was started in 1962 by the Fathers Clubs of both schools,” says legendary CM Head Football Coach Jim O’Connor. “The game was originally played at Boston College’s Alumni Stadium because neither school had a home field. The game grew to become one of the state’s premier Thanksgiving matchups because five times, the winning team went on to the MIAA Super Bowl Game,” O’Connor adds. As was the case with CM’s November 3, 2017, Hail Mary victory over BC High, the Thanksgiving matchup has often been decided by the final play, including CM’s thrilling 3433 win over the Eagles back in 2003. Tim Watson ’04, who was the quarterback of that team, still speaks of what that game and this rivalry means to him. “The rivalry is great, and that game is something that is always going to be a great memory of mine. Anytime I run into anybody from BC High or CM who was there remembers that game,” said Watson. If history is any indication, this year’s game will undoubtedly be one to remember.

Now in its 60th year, Catholic Memorial School is still a young school relative to many of its New England counterparts, yet CM has one of the most storied high school football traditions in Massachusetts. CM was founded in 1957 by the Christian Brothers, but the school’s first football team did not appear on the gridiron until the fall of 1960. Led by Coach Brother O’Callaghan, the team composed of freshmen and sophomores played strictly a Junior Varsity schedule that included a 22–0 win over BC High. In 1961, legendary Head Coach and Athletic Director Jim O’Connor took over at the helm of the Knights Football team as they joined the Class B Catholic Central League as a varsity team. As expected in their first year, the Knights finished below .500 with a record of 2–5–2, but things quickly turned around. The next year the Knights finished with an 8–1 record, earning them a Catholic Central League Championship as well as being crowned Class C State Co-Champions. Since those first two years, Catholic Memorial has gone on to win three State Championships, nine Catholic Conference Championships, and has had the honor of playing in the first-ever Massachusetts High School Super Bowl game in 1972. Catholic Memorial asks its students to become renaissance men who excel in the classroom and on the athletic fields. The CM football team embodies these qualities and sets great examples for leadership, scholarship, and sportsmanship. The program has had numerous alumni go on to play at the collegiate and professional level, including Joshua Boyd ’08, a former Harvard football captain, and Armani Reeves ’12 and Camren Williams ’12, who were members of the 2015 Ohio State University National Championship team. The CM Knights defeated BC High in 2016 with a 41–27 victory. Our tradition of excellence continues with last year’s captains — Jack McGowan enrolling at Harvard University, Matthew Marcantano at Bowdoin College, and Peter Sciblia at Middlebury College. CM is proud of the success of its student-athletes and their commitment to the ideals of a CM Knight.
