ONE OF THE DELIGHTS OF OUR POSITION AS TRUSTEES OF DERBY ACADEMY IS THE OPPORTUNITY TO WORK WITH SUCH COMMITTED, HARDWORKING, AND SUPPORTIVE VOLUNTEERS. Between the Development Committee and the Annual Fund Parent Ambassadors, ably led by Maria and Rob Fawcett and Amy and Matt Torrey, we had a banner year of fundraising for the school’s critical Annual Fund. It was a rewarding way to welcome Joe Perry, Derby’s new Head of School, to our extraordinary community. Joe’s welcoming manner, energy, and experience with elementary school students made it easy to achieve such success this year. Through all of your efforts, Derby well exceeded its Annual Fund goal by finishing the year with gifts totaling more than $580,000. We achieved 100% participation from our Primary and Lower School parents, as well as 100% participation from our outstanding faculty and staff! One of Derby’s strengths is the depth of the commitment of its constituents. Together, the generosity of trustees, parents, parents of alumni, alumni, faculty, friends, and even current students helps to sustain Derby’s incredible educational opportunities. As a result, we are able to enroll students who would otherwise not be able to afford an independent school education, and teachers are able to avail themselves of extraordinary professional development opportunities both locally and internationally. On behalf of the students, faculty, and administration, please accept our deepest gratitude for continuing to make Derby a priority in your charitable giving, and for believing in Derby. As you will see in the following pages, it takes many contributors from the entire Derby community to help “Improve Both Mind and Heart.” Maureen D. Pace, P ’15,’17

THE ANNUAL FUND

WHAT IS THE ANNUAL FUND? All non-profit institutions like ours need to supplement income with fundraising to cover expenses, grow the program, support new initiatives, and attract more members to the community. Every year, the Annual Fund is the primary vehicle used to meet budgetary needs. Supplemental development events are also necessary to reach our budget goals, as well as move beyond the bottom line to enhance the Derby experience.

CLASS OF 1975 Susan Woods Spofford

“There is pride at Derby, and when visitors come they see something that’s quite exceptional. Seeing is believing. If you can, come to campus or come to a reunion. People are always amazed when they return. You can open a brochure or go online, but it’s not the same as hearing the laughter or seeing children playing and having a good time. I come back to campus often, and I see contributions impacting the faculty, as well as the campus. I see a happy place that’s very active and integrated with the town. It’s a very worthy institution to support.

I give because I have very happy memories of Derby, and I feel that in any organization the Annual Fund is the most important, because tuition doesn’t cover everything. ‘Improve Both Mind and Heart’ is a life motto, and I think whether you’re in school, or socially or philanthropically engaged, you’re still trying to improve both of those things.”

Jane Carr ’50, P’75,’77,’79,’82, GP’03,’05

“I wanted my daughter to attend Derby because a lot of my closest friends were my Derby Academy classmates, and I’m hoping she comes away with similar life-long relationships. There are some amazing opportunities at Derby that we didn’t have while I was here, and the Annual Fund has allowed Derby to progress. I think it’s important to say ‘thank you’ for the education I received, and to help the school continue to evolve.

It makes me feel good to give back. I went to very nice schools over the course of my educational experience, but Derby was always my favorite, so it’s nice to help the school continue its mission and its philosophy.”

and Serguei Borissenkov

and Robert B. Spofford

“I loved teaching. I got up every day for 37 years and I couldn’t wait to go to work. I loved being here because I loved the spirit and the sense of community between the faculty and staff and the school. We cared about each other, and I’m glad to see that growing bigger today.

The Annual Fund keeps that sense of community thriving. During those formative years at Derby, the development of the whole child is essential – not just athletics, arts, or academics, but the sense of community; developing compassion for others. What really promotes the school is seeing that faculty, alums, past and present parents, and grandparents are truly invested in Derby Academy. That’s so important. How wonderful it is to come away with an abiding sense of caring.“

the new playground balls that Derby had provided, offering them hours of enjoyment. “It became very clear to me that these small gifts from Derby made us a much larger part of this school than even I had realized,” Betsy said. Over the course of a week, she met with teachers and administration, taught lessons to the students, visited students’ homes and a local hospital, and helped assemble gift bags and hygiene kits for the 150 children in need. “I found the Malawian people to be warm and hospitable,” Betsy said, “but the most powerful thing I saw was the organic connections being made. Neither the language barrier, the cultural differences, nor the socioeconomic distinctions mattered.” The adults at MCM were curious about more efficient and effective ways of teaching. “How do I create a culture of readers?” the head of school asked. Betsy reviewed the importance of Responsive Classroom techniques with the teachers, stressing that by establishing personal relationships with the children, they will simultaneously build teacher-student trust. “Once the children feel safe and trusted,” she said, “they will innately become more open as learners.” After asking the children to share “What makes you happy?” the vast majority answered, “communicating with Derby.” For Betsy, that single moment broadened her perspective of this collaboration and helped her realize the positive impact Derby has made. “I feel lucky to have had the opportunity to take away so many valuable lessons from this trip. Not only will I be able to more clearly communicate to the Derby students what MCM is like, but I also have a much greater understanding of what we can offer to MCM through our lessons.” Reflecting on her journey and the opportunity made possible by the Derby Academy Faculty Travel Grant, Betsy is amazed that the seemingly simple subject of water could have led to such a remarkable adventure. “I am thrilled to have had the chance to experience this trip with my son; to see the sights, hear the sounds, to see this part of Africa and, of course, to spend time with the children at MCM. What I’ve learned has changed my perspective of the world, of our culture, and of my own preconceived ideas – many of which I am still unable to articulate. There is no replacing personal experience, and I’m confident that not only have I grown as a person and as a teacher, but that my students at Derby will also benefit from my experiences. This trip has left me full of gratitude and has given me a much greater appreciation for all we do for students, both near and far.”

Hingham Institution for Savings President and CEO Bob Gaughen P’96,’99 with Myla Estremera ’20.

A WORTHY INVESTMENT Derby Academy, in partnership with Hingham Institution for Savings, is pleased to announce that Myla Estremera ’20 of Weymouth has been selected to receive the newly established Hingham Institution for Savings Merit Scholarship. This annual scholarship is made possible with the financial support of Hingham Institution for Savings and will cover Myla’s tuition through her graduation from Derby Academy. Head of School Joe Perry is delighted that Myla joined the fifth grade when classes resumed in September. “We’re thrilled Myla became part of our Derby community this fall,” Mr. Perry said. “This scholarship represents the continued partnership between two of Hingham’s oldest institutions, while continuing to support a new generation of learners.” Myla’s mother, Trina Pickering, is amazed by the generosity of Hingham Institution for Savings President and CEO Bob Gaughen P’96,’99. “When I found out about Myla’s scholarship, I instantly cried,” Ms. Pickering said. “I knew she would get accepted to Derby because she was so determined, but I had no idea how I was going to manage it financially. When the news came that Hingham Institution for Savings offered Myla a scholarship for her duration at Derby, I was overwhelmed. Myla is beyond thrilled to be a part of Derby Academy — all thanks to Bob Gaughen for having complete faith that she will continue to strive for the best!” Welcome, Myla!

Established in 1834, Hingham Institution for Savings is the oldest financial institution in Hingham and one of the oldest continuously operating banks in the United States.
