Blacksburg is a small town with a big heart. Founded in 1798 by William Black, its current population of approximately 15,000 swells more than 40,000 with Virginia Tech students. Many of the original structures included in Black’s “Sixteen Squares” of Blacksburg’s sixteen blocks remain in use, some repurposed for museums, restaurants and art galleries. The Huckleberry Trail, once a rail line that brought cadets to college, now provides a green commuter option, training ground for runners and bikers or paved surface for a pleasant stroll. It runs more than six miles between downtown Blacksburg, next to the public library, and the New River Valley Mall in Christiansburg. The town’s unique blend of academia, entrepreneurs and small town character attract university research dollars, tourists, alumni and new residents every year. Photo by John McCormick
