San Lucas For more than 150 years, land in this part of the county was used for cattle grazing. Then, in 1970, vineyards were planted. The vines have thrived ever since. Today, nearly 8,000 acres is cultivated to grow Chardonnay, Cabernet Sauvignon, Merlot and Sauvignon Blanc. Typified by warm days and cool nights, daily summer temperatures can range from 100 to 40 degrees. As a result, wines from this area possess brilliant colors, abundant flavors, and distinctive fruit aromas.

Hames Valley One of the youngest registered wine growing regions of Monterey County, Hames Valley was approved in 1994 as its own AVA. This region is sheltered from the strong winds of the Salinas Valley, making it much warmer than the majority of Monterey County’s other appellations. The weather patterns are similar to that of the county’s southern neighbor, Paso Robles. In these conditions, Cabernet Sauvignon and Merlot grapes thrive, producing hearty, earthy wines.
