M.DES SPRING SEMESTER OF 2022
LOCATION- HOT SPRINGS,ARKANSAS
Hot Spring Park Hotel is an adaptive reuse proposal to convert a midcentury modern former nursing home nestled in Hot Springs National Park to a fifty-room boutique hotel. The owner and developer, Herschel Weisfeld, was very interested in creating conceptual and experiential linkages to Hanamaki, Japan, the sister city of Hot Springs. The hotel will include a sake brewery, shochu distillery, and a traditional onsen bathhouse. The proposal primarily includes interior architecture and design with some landscape design, and limited structures on the building roofs and entrance.
: Japanese art of repairing broken pottery with lacquer dusted or mixed with powdered gold, silver, or platinum. “Golden Joinery”
The Hot Springs Park brand awakens the five senses and employs them through the use of the intangible and tangible to achieve balance.
The illuminated column serves as a beacon of light and life as people drive past the property - and is the first interaction drivers will have with the property. The living wall celebrated the existing breeze blocks of the building.
Inspired by the work of landscape architect Patrick Blanc.
New CLT wood structure serves as entrance to onsen bath house and spa - it creates and enticing pattern of light play to experience inside and outside
The structure’s existing in-fill brick will be painted black and then used to wrap the new CLT construction columns that support the balconies as a source of fire-proofing.
These illuminated shoji screens create exte rior intrest and functionally provides privacy for the guest suite balconies that serve as an ambient controlable light source.
A new addition to the existing retaining wall will incorporate planting beds and billowing vege tation - periodic spots along the wall will have small water trickles that flow down the textured concrete panel into a creek bed with integrated lighting. This new element will provide sound privacy, and visual privacy, while softening the entrance.
The new entrance is a concrete structure with an 8 feet wide wooden pivot door - this space emphasizes scale and compresses and then releases guests into the grand three-story lobby. A reflecting pool sits at the entrance and mirrors the concrete panels throughout the day.
Inspired by famous Japanese architect Tadao Ando
Any new additions to the building will consist of CLT construction to support sustainability and emphasize the kintsugi concept philosophy of contrast and a presence of new connection.
The design of the lobby was inspired by the interior wooden structure of a Japanese paper lantern - the lantern provides a source of light but is transparent in nature - this idea provided an opportunity to create transparency from the corridors on the 1st and 2nd level through the use of wooden slats.
Japanese for bar - a hidden gem found in an alley
Nomiya is a Japanese style pub with urban touches similar to a small hole-in-the wall eatery you’d find in Tokyo. This is where you can taste authentic cuisine and share a signature cocktail with friends. The pub is a highly specialized service that creates an atmosphere where customers can relax and experience culinary mastery.
JAPANESE PUBInspired by the dips and ribbing of a traditional Japanese fan - the ceiling feature in the entrance provides a delicate texture - while providing diffused light shown through the cane.

The reflecting pool connects the two exiting tree planters - and emphasizes the harmony found in linear movement. This acts as a connecting point from the past to the future - and serves as a separation of space for main circulation and private seating areas.
Ease of access from private balconies is made through the use of stepping stones on top of the dry garden that spans the exterior.
3.
Come and enjoy an escape in the cabanas that overlook the garden. A variety of seating arrangements are offered so guests can create autonomy of the space.

The living wall provides a layer of biophillia and texture. This beautiful wall serves as a picture perfect moment for events or meet ings that people may have in the space.
2. Building core - the rooftop can be accessed through the stairs and elevators - creating ease of access.
3.
The pavilion type structure provides shade from harsh sun during the day - and creates an iconic Japanese moment in the structure.
4. Come and relax on the rooftop in our comfortable lounge seating and bar seating. The modular furniture can be stored to transform the space into a place set up for events and other functions.

The variety found within the landscape is surprising and beautifully connected to the paradox of order and disorder found in nature. This intertwined ideas is explored through symmetrical geometry, asymmetrical geometry, and organic layering of the landscape contour.
The word "Oro" in spanish translates to Gold – and pays homage to the rich history of gold mining that kick started the olymipic valley development during the gold rush and Iconically, The Oro Resort stands out as the hidden gem within the valley

The branded three-meal restaurant - Hora Dorada - means "Golden Hour" in Spanish. The concept creates an evocative celebration of the mountains during golden hour through color, texture, and lighting.
With the serving island as the center touchpoint, the plaster ceiling was inspired by the ripple effect created in water. The undulating form ripples out from the center and expands out to the edges of the restaurant.

The La Mina bar and lounge concept is a contemporary twist on traditional Spanish design and then translated to celebrate the setting of a ski village. The space highlights the rich textures of terracotta, warm leathers, and colorful stones. Form is used in the space to reframe the guest to be immersed in the context of the mountains.
The event space, in its verticality, its approach, and then view - one's perception of the space stands in opposition to how the space is experienced. This contrast created an environment that was sculpted and created kinetic energy that made an ever-changing experience.

LOCATION- BALTIMORE,MARYLAND
Inspired by the artistic style of pointillism. PACC connects people and breaks down the boundaries found in the inner city neighborhoods of Baltimore.
To be a high-risk youth is to be added into a number, a higher probability that you will fail in school, make more mistakes in life, and even be incarcerated. But this probability does not imply certainty. There are opportunities in which high-risk youth can rise up and supported so they don't become just a number that failed. Through programs at PACC these adolescents can be exposed to many mentors that will uplift and inspire them. This type of mentorship will aid and equip the youth with the tools that will help them discover themselves. It is a fact that children involved in some sort of artistic expression continually do better in school and are more likely to further their education after high school graduation. The arts teach more than just creation, it challenges critical thinking, engages peers, and gives children the opportunity to show self-expression.

Inclusivity and connectivity. Pointillism is a technique that relies on the ability of the eye of the viewer to draw connections and blend the range of color. PACC connects people and breaks down the boundaries that society places upon inner city neighborhoods. The stigma of the collected whole is revitalized and focuses on the individuals that make up the whole, like the small dots do in a pointillism art work. Creating community strong as the whole itself. When all of the colors mix together in the painting, there is one unified color that shines.
: is a technique of painting in which small, distinct dots of color are applied in patterns to form an image. Neo-Impressionism
This space encourages ideation and exploration through many types of artistic expression.
The lounge is used as a collaboration space. This area functions as a library and team workshare space as well.
