MCAS Iwakuni is a close-knit community. Our community ties are what bind us and keep us strong together, especially when facing difficult situations. For example, every September, we observe Suicide Prevention & Awareness Month as suicide impacts everyone.

This month, take the time to reflect. Has suicide impacted you? Have you considered what you would do if someone you knew was struggling? Do you know how to recognize the signs that someone is struggling? Or, are you contributing to the stigma by judging the behaviors or challenges of others around you? Thinking about these things can be difficult, but it is necessary for the community-based approach to prevention. This edition of the Preview is dedicated to those we’ve lost, to those who are struggling, to those who have lost a loved one, and to all of us who have the ability to help impart change.

It may seem like suicide is a way to end your pain or stop the hurt. It may seem like there's no way out. One of the things we like to do is explore some of the ways that we can help you intervene with the hurt or the pain that you're experiencing. There are steps that you can take to regain a happy and fulfilled life. I'd like to go over some signs and symptoms that you can recognize to help yourself or help others.

CONTRIBUTING FACTORS

Andrew Rigdon, Community Counselor, Community Counseling Program, takes us through some of the contributing factors that often lead to suicide.

There are a lot of contributing factors that get a number of people to start to have suicidal thoughts or to want to act on those thoughts. If we look at several different factors, then we'll get a lot better at understanding what might be going on for people. When these factors couple with each other, they don't happen in isolation, then that is when it really makes it more dangerous for the person.

Risk Factors and Stressors Suicide impacts everyone, but some risk factors and stressors are common among those with suicidal ideations. Stressful life events play a significant role in triggering thoughts of suicide. These events may include becoming a victim of abuse, divorcing a spouse, or experiencing financial trouble.

Andrew Rigdon Community Counselor Andrew is a Licensed Marriage and family therapist in Iwakuni with his wife and four kids for just over a year. He has worked in several settings, including residential treatment facilities, in-home family therapy, and private practice. Andrew enjoys working with individuals, couples, and families to help work through whatever life throws at them. He strives to meet people where they are at in life and support them in improving themselves, their relationships and working through current and past problems.

Erica Mays Community Counselor Erica Mays is a licensed social worker with the Community Counseling Program. Shortly after Erica graduated high school, she enlisted in the Navy. Before transitioning from the Navy, she became a Navy spouse and a mother of military children. Erica graduated from the University of Hawaii at Manoa in 2015 with a Bachelor of Social Work degree. In 2016, she graduated from the University of Southern California with a Master of Social Work. The state of Illinois has licensed Erica as a social worker since 2017. So naturally, her social work career has centered around serving military service members and their families.

Joseph Johnson Community Counselor Joseph received his Bachelor's Degree in Psychology from Upper Iowa University and a Master's Degree in Mental Health Counseling Psychology and School Guidance from Troy State University. He is currently enrolled in the Doctoral Counseling and Psychology Program at Holy Cross University, focusing on Mental Health and the Military Family. This is his 26th year of providing individual, family/couples therapy, and group counseling to adults, children above age six, and adolescents. Diane Pospisil-Kinney Clinical Supervisor Diane is a licensed clinical professional counselor (LCPC) from the state of Illinois. She has been in the field of counseling and behavioral health since 1995. She has worked in community mental health, the university setting, private practice, and now within the active-duty community. She works primarily in individual and couples counseling and has specialized in traumainformed recovery work for over 20 years.

Paige Fisher Community Counselor Paige Fisher is a native of Annapolis, Maryland. She is a Licensed Clinical Social Worker who graduated with her MSW from the University of Maryland, Baltimore. Paige has worked as a clinical counselor at the Community Counseling Center for almost two years. As a proud Navy spouse, she understands the many unique challenges that military members and their families face. In addition to serving the military, Paige has specialized in working with children and teens and providing medical social work to patients with End-Stage Renal Disease.

Have you experienced working with a client who admitted it was a stigma holding them back from coming forward and asking for help? How did that client break through? Absolutely. Breakthroughs happen in several ways. One way has simply been while the client was engaged in counseling and realized for themselves partway through that nothing terrible happened in their career. Another breakthrough often occurs when we acknowledge with the client that if they could have "fixed" everything, they would have and never would have needed counseling. It isn't a matter of weakness because it takes real strength to keep moving forward every day struggling with these issues.

Implementing these practices can also reduce your risk for injury and give you more energy overall.

It could be anything from working out, having an at-home spa night with a bath bomb and a scented candle, attending a yoga class, meditating, reading, journaling, or even getting some much-needed rest. When practicing self-care, be sure to acknowledge that you are taking the time to take care of yourself.
