May 5th was the 41st MCAS Iwakuni Friendship Day. This joint US/JMSDF event is the largest airshow in the Pacific and the largest single-day air show worldwide. Previously awarded the “Dick Schram Memorial Community Relations Award,” this year’s event welcomed over 210,000 visitors onto the station. This event strengthens the long-standing relationship with our host nation. Attendees were most excited for the F-35 fighter jet display and the Blue Impulse finale performance.

Star Festival Mikie Watanabe, Cultural Adaptation

The Tanabata festival is an event related to the stars. It is based on the Chinese star festival called Kikkoden . During the eighth century, it was conveyed to Japan as one of the Imperial Court’s events and was spread among the people in 17th century. This is the traditional Japanese tragic romance story for July 7th.

nce upon a time, a woman called Orihime (Vega) and a man called Hikoboshi (Altair) lived across the Heavenly River (Milky Way). Orihime weaved kimonos, and Hikoboshi was a cattleman. Orihime’s father the God of the Sky was looking for a marriage partner for her and he introduced her to Hikoboshi the hard worker. Hikoboshi and Orihime fell in love at once and became husband and wife.

hey were so deeply in love with each other that they ended up neglecting their duties. The people’s kimonos crumbled and the cows got sick. God was angry and forced them to live separate from one another across the Heavenly River as punishment. However, God, who pitied the grieving Orihime, permitted that the two meet each other at the shores of the heavenly river only one night of the year, July 7.

hey worked hard afterward in preparation for the day, and they wait expectantly for the Star Festival every year. However, unfortunately, the date of Tanabata is in the rainy season, so if it rains on that night, the only chance when Hikoboshi and Orihime can meet all year, the Heavenly River will be flooded with rainwater. Both lovers will be unable to meet each other. But it is said that when the river overflows, a Magpie flies to help them.

hen you look up in the sky at night, you will be able to find their stars and the Milky Way. The Heavenly River represents the Milky Way, the galaxy containing the solar system and our Earth. Orihime’s star represents Vega which is located to the west of the Milky Way, one of the brightest stars in the Lyra constellation. Hikoboshi’s star represents Altair, which is located to the east of the Milky Way, star of the Aquila constellation.

hen you find their stars, think about the story of Orihime and Hikoboshi. There are Tanabata festivals held a day before July 7th, and a day afterward in every region of Japan. People write their wishes on colorful paper strips and hang them on bamboo branches. People create beautiful origami paper crafts to hang as well. In Iwakuni, you can enjoy the Tanabata atmosphere in downtown Iwakuni or Sanzoku (the Chicken Shack) restaurant. They will decorate with colorful Tanabata ornaments.

Why don’t you join the Tanabata Festival to write your wishes? The Cultural Adaptation Program will take you to a Nursing Home near the Kintai Bridge on July 7 and share the event. Sign-ups begin on June 7 at the Library. M C C S I WA K U N I . C O M |

You will have a chance to experience Zen meditation and learn how to write Buddhist scriptures followed by a traditional Zen lunch (vegetarian meal).

Experience this beautiful, traditional Japanese summer event in Kyushu, featuring towering pyramids of lanterns. This festival celebrates Japanese folk culture. There is a mall at the train station where you can enjoy food and shopping.

TEA CEREMONY

By the light of a small bonfire hung in a basket off the prow of their boats, fishermen tie leashes to cormorant birds which dive into the river to catch the fish and bring them up. This is a 1,300-year-old traditional fishing method in Japan. Enjoy a summer night watching this unique event near the Kintai Bridge.

Kikko Chashitsu was originally built as a guest house for the Kikkawa family in 1892. Now the house is used as a tea house by Iwakuni Tea Ceremony Association. It is located in the same area where Kikkawa family history museum and Chokokan museum are located. Tea ceremonies are hosted by Ura-Senke school. Please experience traditional Japanese culture. Japanese sweets and green powder tea will be served. Admission fee is ¥500. Please do not come in shorts, T-shirts, or barefoot for this activity.

Enjoy a peaceful evening watching fire flies illuminate the night near a clear creek in the Funotani area.

HYDRANGEA FESTIVAL MONTH OF JUNE, 9 AM - 5 PM, HOFU CITY

The Amidaji temple was founded in 1187 and owns numerous Buddha sculptures as well as ancient writings. It is also famous for various kinds of hydrangea flowers that visitors can enjoy. On June 16, there will be music performances, food vendors and a tea serving booths. Admission is ¥200.

TOUKASAN FESTIVAL JUNE 2-4, NOON-11 PM, HIROSHIMA CITY

One of three major festivals in Hiroshima, held to honor the god of Touka Daimyojin at Enryuji Temple. This festival marks the beginning of Yukata dressing season. Yukata is a light cotton kimono considered as a summer outfit. A bon-dance parade and hundreds of street booths with games and snack foods will be along Chuo Dori Avenue.

Experience the beautiful purple and white iris flowers. There will be an iris drawing contest, Japanese traditional music, dance performances, and bamboo craft workshop. In case of heavy rain, the event may be cancelled.

RICE PLANTING FESTIVAL & TEA CEREMONY JUNE 11, 10 AM - 3 PM, SHUKKEIEN GARDEN HIROSHIMA CITY

Traditional rice planting songs in northern Hiroshima are played and sung while young girls in traditional outfits are planting rice. The rice planting ceremony starts at 1PM. Tea ceremony is held from 10AM-3PM. Admission fee is 260 yen and a tea ticket costs 700 yen.

by April Miller, Supervisory Librarian Libraries across the United States conduct summer reading programs as a way to encourage reading during the season. Throughout the summer, readers track the time they spend reading and report to the

library to earn prizes and awards. Summer reading programs, however, aren’t only meant to stave off boredom while school is out and the weather is hot. Studies show that when young people aren’t engaged in educational activities during the summer, they can experience significant learning loss, sometimes referred to by researchers as the “summer slide.” This loss is cumulative, and by the end of 6th-grade children who consistently lose reading skills over the summer may be two years behind their classmates. Reading is essential for helping students become better readers, writers, and spellers. Students who read recreationally out-perform those who do not. Summer reading programs also encourage parents to read with their younger
