WHERE WERE YOU?

MARINE CORPS COMMUNITY SERVICES // IWAKUNI, JAPAN

" Sure, we start the day early and it’s an arduous 13 hours of non-stop working, but Friendship Day is the bridge that unites us as a community with our host nation and its citizens. This was my second year and I am definitely looking forward to next year’s. I am forever grateful to say that I was part of an event of this magnitude. May the tradition live on for years to come!"

- Evany De Jesus "My experience at Friendship Day was really awesome. Since this was my last Friendship Day before I move, it was nice to be able to spend time with old friends and make new friends with some of the Japanese citizens. There was a lot of laughter and fun while we worked, and the overall vibe of the day was great. Working with MCCS gave me an opportunity I would have never had if I was back in the states. The people around me really made the day special; there wasn't a time when I wasn't laughing, even while we worked to serve so many people. My favorite part of the day was seeing everyone come on base with such bright smiles. Experiencing Friendship Day with MCCS made my last one here really memorable." - Jazell Colinarez

"The MCFTB Spa Day is something Brianna and I will never forget. We may not be the best at Pilates but it was a fun experience nonetheless. We were able to meditate and create our own diy products that we can recreate at our own houses in the future. I am glad we were able to have a fun/relaxing day away from our stressful lives where we could focus on just ourselves and not have to worry about outside problems." - Stefani Perry

Speaking Poker Lingo Like a BOSS

COMMUNITY ARTICLE

by Aaron Roman, Community Writer

If you’re like the majority of people, then you’ve

known about the game of poker since you were young. When we were children, poker was a right of passage. Movies, television, and comics portray poker as everything from a game of brotherly bonding to a nail-biting, high-stakes match of wits. Sometimes, the fate of the world depended on the outcome. You sat there like a young naive sponge, soaking it all up, convinced you were ready for the day where you could be a part of this fascinating ritual. Then it happened. You sat down at that green table, and the dealer started passing out cards to each player. That's when you realized that once again, Hollywood hadn’t prepared you for this situation. For the sake of this article, we’re going to assume that in that situation you didn’t run away crying. Embarrassed, you turned to a friend, fessed up, and learned the basics of poker. But if you want to truly impress people at your next game, then it’s time you learned to speak the lingo like a true poker boss:

For the purposes of this article we will be using terms for Texas Hold’em.

PLAYER TERMS Blinds: Short for “blind bets,” these are the forced bets made before any of the cards are even dealt. There are two blinds, a Small Blind and a Big Blind (usually these will be annotated by two chips). Button: This is simply a nickname for the player who is currently acting as the dealer. GAMEPLAY Burn: Refers to placing the card on top of the deck face down before cards are dealt in each of the three following parts. ACTIONS Call: Matching the amount of the Big Blind. Raise: Essentially raising the bet, commonly it is double the amount of the Big Blind but you may choose to play differently. Fold: The poker equivalent of throwing in the towel. This is when you pay nothing to the pot and give up your hand. (Relax, we’re not referring to the ones attached to you.) Check: A call in which no money is bet.

The Turn The Flop The first three cards placed face up.

After betting has been finished for the flop, this is the fourth card to be placed face up. You can also say “Burn and Turn” referring back to the act of burning a card first.

The River The fifth and final card to be placed face up. Also called fifth street.

Showdown: The appropriately given title for after betting on the river is complete and players reveal their hands. For those of you who made it to the end on a bluff or are just too embarrassed to show your cards, it is your option to not show your cards and concede to the pot.

Poker Face: A term referring to an impassive expression that hides one's true feelings. Haven't mastered yours? Pick up a pair of sunglasses at the MCX. They're great for hiding those little tells.

Show off your newly acquired poker lingo at one of the next Texas Hold’em Tournaments on June 7 (Hornet’s Nest) and June 15 (Marine Lounge) from 7-9 PM. First and second place winners receive MCX gift cards. For more information call 253-3585/5368. M MCCCCSSIIWA WAKKUUNNII..CCOOM M || JJUUNNEE 22001166

with Outdoor Recreation

by Phoenix Wilkins, Community Writer

Summer time in Japan is the perfect time to go out to sea and Outdoor Recreation has an abundance of on-the-water activities and gear to check out and use. However, the best that Outdoor Rec has to offer is their extensive and exciting course on Sailing. This class will give you first hand sailing training to help you get out and enjoy the water this summer. Sailing classes at Outdoor Rec prepare you to sail out in the open ocean and give you access to a sailboat owned by Outdoor Rec that you can use on your own after you are certified! Each class will be four days long, and you will be trained on the best practices to properly and safely navigate a sailboat. On the first three days, you will be taught at the IronWorks Gym. On the fourth day, you will head out to Hikari Beach where you will be able to put all of your training skills to the test out on the open water. After the classes, you get to keep the sailing training manual, and you will become a certified sailor! The certificate is issued by U.S. Navy Sailing and will allow you to sail both in Japan and the U.S! Additionally, Outdoor Rec will let you rent a boat at Hikari Beach for only $10! Make your reservations with Outdoor Rec before heading out to Hikari Beach. You can get to Hikari Beach by either car or train. Make sure you have your Sailing Certificate given to you after the class and remember all of your safety tips! Outdoor Recreation will be offering two sailing classes: June 16-20 and September 22-26. Sign-ups begin a month prior. The class is limited to only four participants each, so make sure to plan accordingly and get your spot! The total price of the class is $90. Youth

You don't have to be an adult to be a good sponsor!

SPONSORSHIP PROGRAM by Felicia Pigge, Installation School Liaison

The Youth Sponsorship Program is designed to assist kids in making a successful transition from one installation to another. Transitioning to a new community, school and finding new friends may not be as easy as it sounds. Many times it 's hard to leave old friends, family, and teachers, as well as, their familiar environments. All of these factors can put kids at risk to negative influences. Also, some may be uncomfortable meeting new friends and may hesitate seeking out opportunities to get involved with their new school or community. It is essential to be prepared and be able to handle the stress of moving. The Youth Sponsorship Program will assist kids with a sense of belonging, contribute to their self-worth, and help them develop positive peer relationships in a new environment.

Can you unscramble these words?

• Recruit others in a positive way? • Make new friends & connect with kids your own age?

Welcome Home

Torii Pines! by Jessica McFarlane, MCCS Public Affairs Specialist

We live aboard MCAS Iwakuni in an exciting time! Right before our eyes, our small community is morphing into a brand new town with tree-lined streets linking new homes to stateof-the-art facilities. Later this month, a new commissary is slated to open next to our new keyless post office. This month, we will also continue to transition many MCCS facilities into the newly built Torii Pines Town Center.

Named for the golf course that was demolished to make way for housing, dining, retail and community buildings, Torii Pines Town Center is located just past the current Sakura Theater near the earliest constructed townhouses. It is the latest addition to a neighborhood that includes places to live, shop, work, and play. Torii Pines will house a new Temporary Lodging Facility, which features 78 new rooms with more living space, high-quality furniture and fixtures, plus complimentary Wi-Fi and cable television. Vivian Yamamoto, TLF supervisory billet manager, shares that the new facility will feature a

gym, breakfast area, and pantry. “It is also conveniently located near several shops and a few blocks away from the commissary and post office,” Yamamoto said, “and we are excited to see the reaction of the community.” The new Town Center will also feature several MCCS retail services, a new Café, and contracted service providers. John Ayers, director of MCCS services, stated that “Head-to-Toe Salon, the Main Barbershop, Services Plus and Starch & Stripes will finish moving over the coming weeks, and will operate alongside the new Café and Laundromat.” “The new Laundromat features a lounge with cable television,” said Ayers, “and more industrial washers and dryers.” The MCX will debut a new retail outlet in Torii Pines Town Center called MCXtreme Bikes & More. “The outlet will offer a wide variety of bicycles, skateboards, surfboards, snowboards, kayaks, camping equipment and grab and go snacks,” said Marty Carter, chief of retail and services. Carter continued that they “hope the community will join the Grand Opening celebration.”

Yukata

Wear a Summer Kimono for a Day! by Mikie Watanabe, Cultural Adaptation Specialist

June is the rainy season in Japan, but it also ushers in the summer and the time to wear Yukata. Yukata is a summer kimono made with lightweight cotton that was traditionally worn in the home as a bathrobe or pajamas. While a kimono is traditionally reserved for formal occasions, Yukata is casual attire. Formal kimono feature materials such as silk, wool and man-made fibers, Yukata consist of single-layered cotton with a simple design. Hence, it is not expensive, and it is easier to wear than a kimono. Unlike the complicated kimono, users can put on Yukata without help. By the way, only active sumo wrestlers are socially permitted to wear Yukata as formal attire during the summer. If you have a chance to stay in a Japanese hotel, called Ryokan, they will provide Yukata for your pajamas. At an onsen, (hot spring) guests wear Yukata and walk to the open-air bath from the lodging place. You can find various kinds of Yukata at online. Some modern designs are like some young girls like to wear theirs like type Yukata called jinbei that is much Since jinbei is cooler and more the price is usually reasonable, it people who visit from overseas.

You can see locals wearing Yukata during the summer at festivals and fireworks displays. The Toukasan festival in Hiroshima occurs on three days during the first weekend of June. This festival, one of the three major Hiroshima festivals, is staged at Enryuji Temple and along Chuo Dori (street) in Hiroshima City. Hiroshima locals consider this festival as the unofficial start of the Yukata-wearing season, and will break out their summer kimono and Jinbei for the first time that year. Cultural Adaptation Program has a trip to the Kintai castle area Bon Odori festival on July 22. Before we head out, we’ll get dressed in Yukata and attend the festival like the locals do. This is a great opportunity to have a truly Japanese experience. You can dance with Japanese locals in your summer kimono! Sign-ups start June 22 at your local Library.

Local Teens Get Creative

by Nina Rivera, Community Writer

“Go to school, go to the teen center, go home. That’s my life,”says Megan Strickland, a winner in the local Image Makers category “Culture and Traditions.” Aiden Louis and Megan Strickland were only two of the many talented young adults who participated in the Boys and Girls Clubs of America Asia Regional Photography Competition. Both contestants snapped amazing photos of their surroundings and one even added a beautiful poem. Aiden Louis, a student attending MC Perry High School, has also recently won at the Boys and Girls Clubs of America Asia Regional Photography Competition and will head to the nationals. His photo and poetry piece was about the balance between powers. “I think what I’m trying to say is that a good character doesn’t have too much of one thing. You need to have a balance of things. Too much of a good thing can be a bad thing. If you’re standing out, but you’re not incorporating anybody else, that’s not a good thing.” Aiden wanted to take advantage of the culture around him and incorporate it into this photograph for this particular photo. Since it was a self-portrait, he was obviously in the picture, but he did not want to overpower or outshine the beauty around him. Megan’s photograph of “Sanzoku Lanterns” shows the talent of Iwakuni’s young adults who take a chance, even if they “aren’t good at it.” “I heard about the photography contest from my teacher. I kind of put it off for a while because I thought ‘Nah, I’m not really good at it ...’ I’m not really good at writing or anything because I didn’t fully read the paper [that explained the contest]. My mom asked if I heard about it and said I should try it, so my brother and I both submitted some work.” I hope this shows Megan that by taking a chance on something you enjoy doing, you might turn some heads with your work! Megan explained to us that her family is creative as well, so it was easy to pick up. "My whole family likes to draw and paint.

My dad was even a tattoo artist for a while which is really cool. My sister is an art student, and my mom likes to write." You go, Megan Strickland! Both Aiden and Megan go to the Youth and Teen Center often and enjoy their time there with the many activities and day trips the Boys and Girls Club provides. Aiden explained that he enjoyed many of the day trips and the dances that are provided.

“It’s a cool place. It’s a nice relaxing place to come and hang out.” Megan informed us that she had been to many of the day trips to the point of her parents telling her to “calm down.” With the amazing trips provided, I don’t see why anybody would want to calm down. “I’ve been to Space World with [The Boys and Girls Club], Safari Land, and the [Shuhodo] caves. I’ve been snowboarding with them. I’m going to Universal Studios soon.” Megan also goes to the Youth and Teen Center just to hang out until her parents are finished with work. She said it is a nice place to be after school, and if one has trouble with homework, the Youth and Teen Center staff is always there to help. Congratulations to Aiden and Megan for their creative approach to the Image Makers contest. Many thanks to the Youth and Teen Center as well for keeping these young people occupied and at the top of their game! The Youth and Teen Center has many Boys and Girls Club events planned for the youth of Iwakuni. . Drop in and ask them about building a robot or learning a new craft such as Ikebana this summer.
