The Department of Defense recognizes August 26 as Women’s Equality Day. This day was established in 1971 to commemorate the passage of the 19th Amendment of the Constitution, the 1920 ratification granting women the right to vote. The DoD recently reported that women make up 13 percent of the militar y, and over the past decade, more than 280,000 women have been deployed to Iraq and Afghanistan. As we return from summer travel, many of our ser vicemembers will be starting their education. Education is essential to remain competitive in the information age. Our team in the Education Office located in Building 411 will assist each student to assess their education needs. The Personal and Professional Development Branch of Marine and Family Programs has recently expanded to include Information and Referral, the Education Office, Career & Financial Resources and the Librar y. The PPD team works together to assist the community with overall development requirements through assessment, referrals, workshops and classes. MCCS offers a great variety of activities this month beginning August 7, with Sensor y Stor y Time at the Librar y (253-3078). Information and Referral will host our annual Information Fair on August 9 at the Club Iwakuni Ball Room. This is an afternoon of Japanese Cultural Entertainment and free food. There will be representatives from both on and off base activities to display what our host nation has to offer during your stay in Japan. (253-6352) . The Summer Softball Tournament runs from August 11-15, grab your mitt and join in or stop by to cheer on your favorite team. The tournament is hosted by Intramural Sports (253-3067). On August 19, the Single Marine Program throws their annual pool party for single and unaccompanied ser vicemembers (253-3585). For those who like to get out and about, Information and Referral (253-6161) is taking a group on a cultural trip to the Mazda Museum. Information Tours and Travel also hosts a trip to Fukuoka to enjoy the Open Air Salsa Party from August 31 - September 1 (253-4377).
