Young Bison boys bring talent to the 2011 track, field STEVE KODAD GAZETTE SPORTS EDITOR

McCOOK, Nebraska – McCook High School has a rich track and field history. The 2011 Bison edition hopes to write a new chapter to the McCook record book. Head coach Tom Sughroue has a talented team this spring, with several state meet veterans returning from a squad that finished third at districts last year and 20th in the final Class B state meet team standings. If the first outdoor meet of the season was any indication, Sughroue and his squad should enjoy a banner year. The Bison lost to North Platte in a dual meet at the McCook High School facilities Friday, March 25 in a meet held under cold, windy conditions. But several McCook boys hit personal-record marks, and several other recorded fast early-season times – especially remarkable considering the meet was held in nearfreezing temperatures. The Bison leader against North

Platte was junior Matt Chitwood. Chitwood uncorked a long jump of 21 feet, 10 inches – just a half-inch off the McCook all-time boys top 10 chart. Sophomore teammate Jake Schlager hit a personal-record 21 feet, 4 1/2 inches in the long jump. How good were those marks? Chitwood’s 21-10 would have placed third in the Class B long jump at state last year, and Schlager’s 21-4 1/2 would have been seventh. By the way, Schlager competed at state in the event last season as a freshman, and he went 20-7 3/4, the 12th best mark in the Class B state competition. Two Bison throwers also hit personal-best marks against North Platte. Senior Derek Chancellor uncorked a throw of 48 feet, 10 inches in the shot put, nearly two feet over his previous best effort at the end of last season. Sophomore Mitch Collicott followed suit with a 48-4 mark in the shot, also two feet-plus better than his previous best. While Chancellor and Collcott will concentrate on the throwing events,

athletes like Chitwood and Schlager will be threats to score in multiple events for the Bison. Schlager should lead the McCook sprint corps, while Chitwood is one of the team’s top pole vaulters. Both will likely be members of what hopes to be a revived and potent Bison boys 400-meter relay team, and Chitwood is also a candidate for the 1,600 relay. And Matt also has gone over 42 feet in the triple jump. Senior Kyle Craw competed at state in the pole vault last season. Craw showed early this season that he is ready to compete with the state’s best in the Class B ranks. Craw cleared 14 feet even at the UNK Indoor High School meet in Kearney March 19 – tied for the sixth-best vault in Bison boys track history. Craw came back and cleared 13 feet against North Platte in the miserable conditions March 25. His best mark last sesaon was 13-1, at districts to qualify for state. Senior Cody Goltl has his sights set on the top of state’s Class B hurdle charts. Cody qualified for state in

both the 110-meter high hurdles and the 300 intermediates last season. He turned in outstanding times of 15.5 seconds in the 110 highs and 41.9 in the 300 intermediates against North Platte a week ago. “Cody has been a mainstay for us in the hurdle events since his freshman year,” said Coach Sughroue. “Cody has put in a lot of time and effort into his hurdling abilities. All his efforts really paid off last season as he ran 15.3 in the 110 highs and 41.4 in the 300 intermediates, running both of these times at the districts and qualifying for in both for the state meet.” Goltl will likely occupy a spot on the Bison boys 1,600 relay, which will aim for a berth in the state meet. Austin Cherry is hoping to follow in the footsteps of his brother Josh. Austin qualified for state in the 800meter run last year as a freshman. Along the way, he ran a 2:01.3 – third fastest in Bison school history, after battling an injury earlier in the year. Cherry ran 52.5 in the 400 meters against North Platte to start this sea-

son, and he should be an important performer this season. Austin has three years to chase down older brother, who finished his Kansas State University football career last fall. Josh holds the McCook school record in the 800, 1:55.38, set in 2006 when he won the Class B title at the state meet. Another state qualifier returning this season is senior Austin Bishop in the discus. Bishop is primed to shatter his PR of 142-11. McCook will have a pair of big meets on the home course this spring. The Bison host the annual Leroy Hoehner Invitational Friday, April 1, starting at 1 p.m. McCook will also entertain western Nebraska entries in the Class B-6 District meet Thursday, May 12. The Bison will join Alliance, Chadron, Cozad, Gering, Gothenburg, Mitchell, Ogallala, Scottsbluff, Sidney and Valentine in the district competition battling for berths in the state meet. The Class B state meet will be held May 20-21 at Burke High School Stadium in Omaha.

Smaller Warriors roster not reflection of team’s quality, says head coach STEVE KODAD GAZETTE SPORTS EDITOR

ARAPAHOE, Nebraska – Quality over quantity may be the battle cry for the 2011 Arapahoe High School boys track and field team. The Warriors have a smaller roster this spring, but head coach Deb McDonald said her team members are quality track athletes. Arapahoe has a host of returning letter winners, led by senior Maclane Scott, a state meet veteran in the distance events. Scott finished eighth in the Class C boys 3,200-meter run at state last season with a time of 10 minutes 12.18 seconds. Scott also ran sixth in the 3,200 at the 2009 Class C state meet as a sophomore. Junior Trev Haussler returns in the throwing events. Haussler finished eighth at state last

Trojans have new coach, experienced team SPRING SPORTS 2011

McCook Daily Gazette

STEVE KODAD GAZETTE SPORTS EDITOR

CAMBRIDGE, Nebraska – Cambridge High School's track and field program will have a new look with several changes on the coaching staff for 2011. Laurie Farr takes over as head coach of both Cambridge boys and girls teams, replacing veteran long-time mentor Dan Keyser. Coach Farr could have a comfortable transition with the Trojan boys, with a long list of lettermen returning from last season. Heading the list of Cambridge veterans are seniors Brian Custer in the distance events and relay, Logan Huxoll in the distant races, and Gus Petersen in the hurdles and field events. Junior veterans include Rayce Dauwen (middle distance, high jump), Kalen Farr (pole vault, hurdles, relays), Ty Fischer (middle

distance, jumps), Isaac Johnson (sprints, relays), Ethan Long (sprints, jumps, relays), Alec McCurdy (hurdles, jumps, relays), Mike Shoff (throwing events) and Austin Stear (throws). Sophomore lettermen returning include Asante Fuqua (field events), Kiel Howell (pole vault, distance), Kaden Huxoll (middle distances, relays), Zane Petersen (throws) and Austin Rice (throws). Coach Farr thinks the Trojans could be a potent team. "The boys will be very competitive and hope to qualify several athletes, including relays, for state," Farr said. "It will be great having districts here again." Cambridge is scheduled to host the Class C-10 District meet Thursday, May 12, with Gazette area teams Chase County, Dundy County-Stratton and Southwest in the field.

EUSTIS, Nebraska – The Eustis-Farnam High School boys track and field team will be short on numbers this spring. The Knights have just seven team members, but over half that number are returning letter winners. The leader is senior Djorn Dunlap, who placed in two events at the 2010 Class D boys state meet. Dunlap finished fifth in the 3,200-meter run and seventh in the 800meter run. Other returning lettermen include seniors Kingsley Gibbens and Jerod Strong,

and sophomore Jordan Wetovick. Head coach Elroy W. Pierce said his Eustis-Farnam teams have shown enthusiasm and good work ethics in early-season workouts. Pierce said all his athletes are looking forward to have a successful season. Brad Dunlap assists Pierce coaching both Eustis-Farnam boys and girls teams. The Knights will compete in the Fort Kearney Conference meet at Elm Creek April 29. "We have a seasoned group of seniors that will lead the team this year," Mroczek said. "We will be competitive in all meets this year. A good group of freshmen will add the depth necessary to make us competitive." Chase County finished fourth at the 2010 South Platte Valley Association meet and sixth in districts. Cardinals will be strong in field events STEVE KODAD GAZETTE SPORTS EDITOR

HAYES CENTER, Nebraska – Several field events should be strengths for the Hayes Center High School boys track and field program this spring. Head coach Mark Frechs has seven returning letter winners, but just one senior among his veteran group. Frechs said his squad looks strong in the throwing and jumping events. Blaine Richter is the lone senior lettermen back this year. Richter competes in the throwing events. Junior letter winners returning include Michael Bishop (discus, triple jump), Matthew Christner (800), Adam Lawson (shot put, discus), Alex McKillip (800, 1,600) and Tyler Rehbein (400, long jump, triple jump). Sophomore Morgan Harouff (throws) also lettered last season. Rehbein qualified for state in the triple jump. He had a season-best mark of 41 feet, 5 1/2 inches. Jim Cole works as co-head coach with Frechs for the Cardinals. Hayes Center is among the long list of Gazette area teams in the Republican Plains Activities Conference meet at Arapahoe April 29.

Falcons will field experienced boys squad STEVE KODAD GAZETTE SPORTS EDITOR

TRENTON, Nebraska – Hitchcock County High School expects to field a competitive boys track and field team this season. The Falcons have good numbers, with nearly 20 boys on the early-season roster. Clive Brown is the leader of a small group of returning letter winners. Brown, a sprinter, qualified for the Class B state meet last May by winning the 100-meter dash in district competition. Other letterman back this spring include junior Cale Brown in the sprints and sophomore Tanner Bauer in the shot put and discus. Austin Blume, a freshman, could be a valued newcomer to the team this year. Blume recorded a 2:09 800 meters as an eighth-grader. Blume is also expected to high jump for the Falcons. Juniors Alex Pollmann (throws) and Gabe Ware (triple jump) are non-lettermen who could be top producers for head coach Mike Tines. Coach Tines expects a good season for the Falcons. "We will have a lot of young athletes who should compliment our returning letter winners," he said. "We should be able to fill most events and relays with our numbers. Clive and Cale Brown will definitely be our team leaders this year. "If our young kids develop, we should be very competitive when districts come around."

BARTLEY, Nebraska – Southwest High School doesn't have a large number of boys competing in track and field this spring. But head coach Les Roggenkamp thinks he has several quality individuals who will be competitive throughout the season. "Not a ton of boys out for track, but there will be quality individuals who can compete regularly," Roggenkamp said.

"The attitude of the boys has been great, and should allow them to reach individual goals." The leader of a quartet of returning lettermen is senior Justin Malleck, a sprinter and long jumper who qualified for the Class C state meet in the 100-meter dash last season. Senior Thomas Sughroue is also a speedster for the Roughriders. Other returning veterans include junior Michael Brodd in the 1,600-meter run and 300 hurdles, and sophomore Adam

WAUNETA, Nebraska – The Wauneta-Palisade High School boys track and field staff has a good group of competitors on the 2011 squad. Head coach Dawn Doetker said the Broncos have more freshman boys on the team than in past years, and that helps with total squad numbers and with putting relay teams together. "Im excited to watch these boys compete this year," Doetker said. A pair of distance runners who placed at districts last season headline the returning letter winners for the Broncos. Senior Chris Bartels placed third in the 1,600-meter run

with a time of 4 minutes, 59.7 seconds. Sophomore Jacob Maris was sixth in the 3,200meter run at districts with his time of 11:21.1. Other returning lettermen included senior Colby Skelton, juniors Reece West and Keagan Haarberg, plus sophomore Logan Bischoff. Coach Doetker said middle and long-distance events and the 3,200-meter relay could be strong events for the Broncos. Doetker's coaching staff includes Seth Alberts, Emily Hudson and Rick Einspahr. ATWOOD, Kansas – Rawlins County High School has several quality athletes on the boys track and field team this year, but head coach John Terry doesn't have many bodies on the roster. Coach Terry said he has just a dozen boys out for track this spring in Atwood. One of the top performers for the Buffaloes this year should be Keaton Argabright. The senior finished seventh at the 2010 Kansas Class 2A state meet in the 800-meter run with a time of 2 minutes, .76 seconds. Junior Kyle Zeigler also lettered last season. Zeigler will compete in the sprints and the 400 relay and 1,600 relay for Atwood. Tyler Martin in the throwing events also earned a letter last spring. Coach Terry is hoping Nathan Rummel in the jumps and sprints, Michael Capo in the relays and Dylan Tiemeyer in the 800 and relays will be solid performers for the Buffs.

Distance relay domination Wednesday, March 30, 2011

Steve Kodad/McCook Daily Gazette

The McCook girls have dominated the distance relay events at the Class B state track and field meet in recent years, thanks in part to this trio of talented runners. Seniors Jessa Sughroue (bottom) and Kelsea Geschwentner (middle) plus junior Emilyne Nichols (top) have all won multiple Class B state meet gold medals, and all three have hopes of continuing McCook始s state meet relay success this season. Sughroue, Geschwentner and Nichols ran on McCook state champion 3,200-meter relay and 1,600 relay teams at the 2010 Class B state meet. All three were also members of the Bison state champion 3,200 relay team in 2009, and Sughroue ran on the McCook 1,600 relay quartet that also won a Class B state meet gold medal in 2009. In Sughroue始s freshman season, 2008, she also was a member of the Bison state champion 1,600meter relay team and the sixth-place 3,200 relay quartet.

Bison girls primed for more relay success at state meet SPRING SPORTS 2011

Wednesday, March 30, 2011

STEVE KODAD GAZETTE SPORTS EDITOR

McCOOK, Nebraska – Three things in life seem a certainty – death, taxes, and McCook High School’s track and field distance relay girls standing on the state meet podium. The Bison girls have had a strong corps of middle distance runners in recent years, and this year should be more of the same. The McCook girls have claimed the Class B state championship in the 1,600meter relay at state the past three years. The Bison girls are also the two-time defending state champions in the 3,200-meter relay. Three members of the 2010 Bison state champion relay teams – seniors Jessa Sughroue and Kelsea Geschwentner, plus junior Emilyne Nichols – return this year. “Our greatest team strength seems to be our middle-distance and distance runners,” said McCook head coach Steve Clapp. “In this area we have our greatest depth of quality athletes that will be able to score points, led by Jessa Sughroue, Kelsea Geschwentner and Emilyne Nichols.” Although nothing is etched in stone, there’s a good chance that Sughroue, Geschwentner and Nichols will compete for McCook again in both relay events when it’s time for district meet competition in early May. McCook girls head coach Steve Clapp said he will likely alter his relay lineups early in the season in an attempt to find a fourth member for each relay team and to develop solid back-up runners for the two relay quartets. Sughroue has been one of the state’s top female prep runners the past three years. Jessa has qualified for the Class B state meet in a maximum of four events each of her three years of high school competition. She has been a member of each of the five state champion McCook relay teams dating back to her freshman year. Not to mention that Sughroue has won a medal (top eight finish) in each of the 12 total events she has competed in at three state meets she has competed in during her McCook career. Jessa won state titles in the 400-meter dash and 800-meter run as a freshman. She placed third in the 800 and seventh in the 400 as a sophomore, then second in the 800 and fourth in the 400 last spring. Other top performers Senior Erin Premer returns for another shot at a state meet medal in the discus. Premer finished seventh at state

Geschwentner just missed an individual medal at state last year when she finished ninth in the 800-meter run, about a half-second out of eighth place. Sughroue, Geschwentner, Nichols and Premer have performances ranked among the all-time top 10 in McCook High School girls track and field history. Other top individuals for the Bison girls team this spring include senior Gretchen Sehnert in the long jump and triple jump, senior Meagan Carfield in the hurdles, junior Emily Tolliver and sophomore Veronica Bair in the distance

events, and sophomore Rachel Goltl in the hurdles. Other returning letter winners who hope to make key contributions include seniors Amanda Einspahr, Shelby Hudson, Taylor Matson and Beth Peck, and sophomore Megan Ruppert. Coach Clapp may have a trio of freshman that make a splash on the McCook varsity lineup this season, including Molly Sughroue in the sprints and middle-distance events, Danica Liess in the sprints and Kira Johnson in the jumps. “We will have a number of young athletes competing for starting spots,” Coach Clapp said. “After graduating a very strong senior class, this year

will rely on a mixture of young and older experienced athletes. How well our young athletes develop may very well determine how well we will do as a team. “We still have a group of very quality athletes that we will have to depend on to start the season.” Clapp works with the Bison girls sprinters and horizontal jumpers. Clapp’s assistant coaches includes George Briggs (throwers), Brent May (distance, middle distance), Kristen Blume (hurdles, high jump) and Bill Ramsay (pole vault). Polston leads 2011 Arapahoe girls track team STEVE KODAD GAZETTE SPORTS EDITOR

ARAPAHOE, Nebraska – Arapahoe High School should have a tough girls track and field team in 2011. The Warriors are anchored by senior sprinter Cayla Polston, who qualified for the Class C state meet state in the 100meter dash and high jump last season and competed on the Arapahoe 400-meter relay team at state. Polston recorded season-best marks of 12.6 seconds in the 100, 15 feet, 6 inches in the long jump and 5-2 in the high jump. Other returning letter winners include seniors Michele

Borden, Caitlin Tangeman and Makayla Wendland, juniors Jessica Jording and Rachel Koller, and sophomores Alyssa Downey, Paige Jenkins and Alexa Whipple. Head coach Deb McDonald also expects freshmen Rochelle Wendland, Carley Polston and Stephanie Paulsen to contribute. "I am looking forward to the girls track season," Coach McDonald said. "With our returning athletes and the upcoming freshmen, we should be very competitive." Collin Kubik, John Paulsen and Dan Schaben are assistant coaches for the Arapahoe track teams.

ATWOOD, Kansas – Rawlins County High School will rely on a small group of returning veterans to lead the 2011 girls track and field program. Long-time head coach John Terry said this year's team is short on numbers. The Buffaloes have four returning letter winners coming back this spring. Senior Aubrey Basgall competed on the Rawlins County 400-meter relay and 1,600meter relay teams at the Kansas Class 2A state meet last year. Junior Abbely Wolters runs the 300 hurdles and the 1,600 relay. She competed on the 1,600 relay at state last season. Summer Castens, a junior, throws the shot put and discus and runs on the Atwood 400 relay. Sophomore Taylor Leitner competed in the 200-meter dash and the 400 relay and 1,600 relay teams at state in 2010. Leitner is expected to run the short sprints and both relays

IMPERIAL, Nebraska – Chase County High School should be among the top teams at its girls track and field conference and districts meets. The Longhorns have 33 girls on the squad this spring, led by 14 returning letter winners. The top veteran is senior Lexee Reichert, who finished

fourth in the Class C girls shot put at state last May with a throw of 39 feet even. Other top returning letter winners include junior Kacia Smith in the 300meter hurdles and 400-meter dash and junior Chantal Heathers in the 800-meter run. Veteran head coach Al Zuege expects freshman Kristen Jussel to be a top competitor in the hurdles and 100-meter dash.

Zuege, in his 24th year at the Chase County school, said his team should be competitive in the South Platte Valley Association meet and at the Class C-10 District meet at Cambridge May 12. Medicine Valley ‘working hard,’ says head coach STEVE KODAD GAZETTE SPORTS EDITOR

CURTIS, Nebraska – Medicine Valley High School is counting less girls out for the track and field team this season. But the Raiders are working hard, according to head coach Shawna Guthrie-Johnsen, with a goal of individual improvement each week. Med Valley is led by 2009 Class D state meet qualifier Jessica Madron. Madron competed in the 3,200-meter run at state two years ago, but missed qualifying last season. Coach Guthrie-Johnsen has four sophomore letter winners

returning, including Colleen Melvin, Tami Simmonds, Taylor Sandoe and Sierra Schmidt. The Raiders head coach is also looking for positive contributions from a handful of freshmen. "We are down on numbers this year, but the girls are working very hard," Guthrie-Johnsen said. "The distance and middledistance races will be our strengths, as well as the hurdles and the throws. "This is a refreshing group of girls who have an upbeat attitude and want to try to improve. Improving at every meet will be our goal. Hopefully, we will have decent weather this spring."

Dundy County-Stratton remains a track and field force STEVE KODAD GAZETTE SPORTS EDITOR

BENKELMAN, Nebraska – Dundy County-Stratton has built one of the top high school girls track and field programs in Southwest Nebraska. The Tigers should be plenty strong again this spring, as head coach Greg McVicker has a long list of returning veterans. The DCS girls won the Republican Plains Activities Conference championship last year, then claimed the Class C10 District meet. The Tigers won team titles in six meets last year and finished runner-up in one other event. One of the top returnees for DCS is senior Gabby Mullinax, who finished fifth in the 3200meter run at the 2010 Class C state meet. Mullinax was also second in the 3,200 at districts and the RPAC meet. Gabby also ran a leg on the DCS statequalifying 3,200-meter relay team. Cassie Starks, a senior, qualified for state last year in the 100-meter dash, the 200 and the 400 relay. Starks won the district title in the 100 and ran second at districts in the 200. Senior Hannah Stroup competed at state in the 100 hurdles after finished second in both districts and conference. Sophomore Nicole Hearon also earned a state meet trip in the 100 meters along with a leg on the DCS state 400 relay team.

OXFORD, Nebraska – Southern Valley High School could have another strong girls track and field team. The Eagles have a long list of returning letter winners from the 2010 team that finished second in both the Republican Plains Activities Conference meet and the Class C-10 District meet. Three state qualifiers return for head coach Tom Schoenfelder. Junior Alissa Brooks finished third in the Class C girls high jump at state. Brooks will again high jump and compete in the hurdles this spring. Senior distance ace Molly Glur qualified for state in the 3,200-meter run, and Glur will likely compete in the 800, 1,600 and 3,200 events this year. Sara Lennemann, a junior, was a state qualifier in the 400-meter dash, and she will compete in the 400 and the

pole vault this season. Other letter winners back this year include juniors Mollie Bose (middle distance events) and Courtney Kresser (shot put, discus), and sophomores Brooke Eden (distance events), Mikaela Hoxmeier (middle distance), McKenzie Nielsen (middle distance), Jordan Paine (throwing events) and Kattie Sadd (sprints, jumps). Coach Schoenfelder said his squad has depth in the jumping events and experienced throwers, and the eagles are solid from the 400-meter dash up to the 3,200-meter run. Southern Valley has an overall lack of depth and a lack of experience in the sprints, according to Schoenfelder. The Southern Valley girls have a date in Arapahoe April 29 for the Republican Plains Activities Conference meet, with a return trip to Arapahoe May 12 for the Class C-5 District meet.

Six letterwinners set to return for Hayes Center STEVE KODAD GAZETTE SPORTS EDITOR

HAYES CENTER, Nebraska – Field events should be a strength for the 2011 Hayes Center High School girls track and field team. The Cardinals have six returning letter winners for new head coach Loren Wagner. The veterans include seniors Tierney Tyan (high jump) and Monica Hamilton (throwing events), junior Halsie Large (sprints and long jump), plus sophomores Katelyn Melton (100-meter dash, long jump and high jump), Sarah Cox (hurdles and high jump) and Kerbie Large (800-meter run and 300 hurdles). Coach Wagner said junior Haley Tyan in the discus and freshman Andrea Wach in the 100, long jump and triple jump could also be top competitors for the Cardinals. Wagner said the team has a few more girls out this season than in recent years. "It will be nice to fill some more events," Wagner said. "I think we will be most competitive in the field events." Jim Cole is assisting Wagner on the Cardinals team this season. Hayes Center will battle with the other 13 schools in an always-tough Republican Plains Activities Conference meet at Arapahoe April 29.

TRENTON, Nebraska – Hitchcock County High School's girls track and field team will look for continued success in the 2011 campaign. The Falcons were second in Class D district competition last year, and this year's team should be among the top teams in the D-9 District meet at Bertrand May 11. Head coach Austin Poppert has a long list of letter winners back this spring. The list is headed by a pair of junior standouts in Laramey Lewis and Jacee Kershaw. Lewis competes in the sprint events. Last season, she finished first in the 100meter dash at districts with a time of 12.9 seconds. Lewis also won the 200-meter dash at districts (26.8 seconds) and placed second in the 400 (1:02.0). Kershaw competes in the hurdle events and the high jump. Jacee won the 100meter hurdles at districts last spring. Sophomore Alexis Bantz earned a pair of district meet medals last season, placing fourth in the 200 and fifth in the 100. Sophomore Ashia Love also placed third in the high jump and sixth in the 100 at districts.

Eustis-Farnam girls track roster smaller, still strong STEVE KODAD GAZETTE SPORTS EDITOR

EUSTIS, Nebraska – Eustis-Farnam High School's girls track and field team has fewer team members this season, but the Knights have a handful of state meet veterans to lead the squad. With just 10 athletes on the roster, head coach Elroy W. Pierce may have a tough time fielding relay teams during the schedule. But Pierce said the 400 and 800, hurdles, high jump and throws should be among the strongest events for his squad. The E-F girls are anchored by junior Andrea Werth, who broke school records last spring in the 100-meter hurdles (16.2 seconds) and the 300 hurdles (48.03). Werth competed in the 2010 Class D state meet in three events. She placed fourth in the 400-meter dash and sixth in the 300 hurdles. Senior Brittany Edson also set a new school record in the girls shot put with a throw of 40 feet even.

"We have a good group of ladies to work with," Roggenkamp said. "We are young but should be competitive in several events. Depth should be an asset and allow us to field good relays. It should be a fun year." Peg Rice and Jeff Stuart are assistant coaches for the Riders. Broncos have several letterwinners back for 2011 STEVE KODAD GAZETTE SPORTS EDITOR

WAUNETA, Nebraska – The throwing events should be a strong point for the 2011 Wauneta-Palisade High School girls track and field team. Head coach Dawn Doetker has several letter winners back this spring, including a pair of girls who placed high at districts last season. Shelby Hamilton finished third in the shot put (34 feet, 1/4-inch) and fourth in the discus (109-0) and Rebecca Strand was fifth in the discus (100-5). Jonee Maris won the high jump at districts last year when she cleared 4 feet, 11 inches. Maris competed at state but did not place. Emma Skelton and Bethany Riener are other return letter winners for the Broncos. Doetker said she has a good group of girls coming out for the sport this spring, including a strong group of newcomers. "Senior girls leadership is so strong, that helps the team," Coach Doetker said. "Our throwers will be very strong, and I'm excited to watch the freshmen throwers and sprinters.”

Maywood girls track team will lean on underclassmen STEVE KODAD GAZETTE SPORTS EDITOR

MAYWOOD, Nebraska –The Maywood High School girls track and field team will rely on underclassmen for top performances in 2011. The Tigers are led by a pair of state qualifiers in Hailee Moore and Liz Snider. Moore qualified in the 100-meter hurdles last year, and Snider was a state qualifier in the high jump. Both Moore and Snider are also expected to compete on the Maywood girls 400-meter relay squad. Other returning letter winners include a pair of sophomore throwers in Tess Whitman and Anna Fischer.

Freshman Justine Stone could be a tough competitor in the distance events. Stone qualified for the 2010 state crosscountry meet. Thompson Herman and Charles Jones coach the Maywood track teams. The coaches are excited about several new editions to their squad, especially Stone. The Tigers coaches said their teams are not really deep in any event, but they have some talent spread out among many events. Maywood competes in the Republican Plains Activities Conference. The RPAC meet is scheduled April 29 in Arapahoe. The Tigers will enter the Class D-9 District meet May 11 at Bertrand.

Deep Bison golf squad looking for great season

STEVE KODAD GAZETTE SPORTS EDITOR

McCook High School head boys golf coach Rick Haney will have the luxury of a “sixth man“ on his 2011 Bison squad. Coach Haney has a pleasant dilemma with six quality golfers on the McCook team this spring. The problem is, in most tournaments McCook will be able to enter only five varsity players. Haney and the Bison will solve the pleasurable problem with a rotating lineup early in the season. The McCook team has high hopes for a very successful campaign. The Bison ended up sixth in last year’s Class B state golf meet at the Meadowlark Hills course in Kearney. All five Bison team members that competed at state in 2010 return this season – seniors Ben Vetrovsky, Drew Shields and Cory Dallam, junior Alan Goodenberger and sophomore Sean Backer. Freshman Mack Alspaugh joins the mix to add another solid cog to Coach Haney’s golf machine. Backer paced the Bison at state last season. Sean finished eighth in the final Class B individual standings in his freshman year with a 36-hole, two-

day total of 153 strokes after shooting rounds of 73 and 80. Vetrovsky was 24th in the final standings with rounds of 79 and 80 for a 159 total. Shields had rounds of 85 and 79 for a 164 at state, and Dallam shot 86 and 87 for a 173. Goodenberger shot 87 and 94 for a 181. In prep golf, the low four individual scores in each 18-hole round are totaled for a team score. Scottsbluff ran away with the 2010 Class B state title. The Bearcats fired an outstanding 36-hole, two-day total of 593 strokes. Omaha Skutt Catholic was a distant second at state with 632, and McCook shot a 649 for finish sixth. No doubt the rest of the state’s Class B squads, and especially McCook and the other western Nebraska competition, will put a big target on the backs of the Bearcats. “They’re the team that everybody in our district looks to after winning the state title last year,” Haney said of Scottsbluff. “They’re going to be the team that everybody puts the bullseye on and tries to catch up to and compete with, and we’re no different. We’ve got them in our sights. We want to roll our sleeves up and show our wares and compete with them just like everybody else.” PO Box 1447 McCook, NE 69001 (308) 345-6690

The Bison showed in the seasonopening North Platte Invite March 25 that perhaps they can challenge Scottsbluff this season. McCook finished third at North Platte with an 18hole score of 327 strokes – just one stroke behind the Cats (Class A Grand Island won the meet with a low total of 315 strokes). The North Platte meet was played under challenging weather conditions, with temperatures near freezing.

Seeking success Coach Haney knows the competition for his Bison will be tough throughout the spring. But the competition on the McCook team and outstanding senior leadership should help push the Bison to a successful season. “All six (varsity players) should prove to compete well this season,” Haney said. “Our senior leadership should be strong this season. “We are a veteran team that returns five quality golfers. With the addition of a freshman varsity player (Alspaugh), we are hoping to enter each meet striving for a top two or three finish. “We’re not guaranteed anything, because our competition that we play out here is ferocious and we’ve got

some really, really good teams that we compete against. With the returning kids that we do have, we’d like to think that we can go to any meet and, if things work out for us, be one of the top teams.” Haney likes the team attitude displayed by his Bison players. “We’ve got a good group of kids attitude-wise; the camaraderie on our team, our kids are really focused on really helping each other succeed,” he said. “We go out and work, and our kids really do get along. They do everything they can to help each other and motivate each other and build each other up. That’s a fun thing – that’s a fun environment for a coach to be in. “We’re really looking forward to this season and we’re hoping that the program is able to take another step forward and that the kids’ efforts turn into victories. We’ve put a lot of time in this program, and the kids work extremely hard. We have a lot of talent, that’s for sure. We have some kids that can swing the sticks.” Late-season western trips Haney hopes to take an extended trip west for the Greater Nebraska Athletic Conference meet in early May

to help his team prepare for district competition. The Bison will enter the Class B-4 District meet Tuesday, May 17 at the Monument Shadows Golf Course in Gering. McCook will battle with Scottsbluff, the host Bulldogs, Alliance, Broken Bow, Chadron, Cozad, Gothenburg, Lexington, Mitchell, Ogallala and Sidney with hopes to claim one of the top three spots at districts and qualify for state. The Class B state meet is scheduled Tuesday and Wednesday, May 24-25, at the Kearney Country Club. The GNAC meet is scheduled Friday, May 6 at Scottsbluff. Haney hopes to enter his team in the Gering Invitational on May 5 on the B-4 District meet course, then stay overnight and compete at the conference meet the following day. The Bison coach said the Gering meet is a great opportunity and convenient for his squad to get a chance to play the district meet course prior to the district competition. Haney has several underclassmen on the team. While he said those youngsters will get a chance to compete at the junior varsity level several times this season, the core of the Bison schedule will be varsity competition.

Medicine Valley golf team looks for return to state STEVE KODAD GAZETTE SPORTS EDITOR

CURTIS, Nebraska – A veteran team will fuel hopes for more success this spring for the Medicine Valley High School boys golf team. The Raiders qualified for the Class D state tournament after finishing second in district competition. Medicine Valley placed 11th at state, and four members of the state meet team return this season. The veterans are led by senior Trey Hildebrandt, who placed 11th in the Class D state meet individual standings with a 36-hole score of 159 on the River's Edge course in North Platte. Hildebrandt also finished third in the 2010 Republican Plains Activities Conference golf meet to lead the Raiders to a third-place

finish in the RPAC team standings. Other state meet veterans returning for head coach Norm LiaKos include senior Adrienne LiaKos, junior Kash Houser and sophomore Brendan Johnson. Sophomore Rulon Taylor and a pair of freshmen, Quentin Chancellor and Marcus Florom, may be the top contenders for a spot on the Medicine Valley varsity lineup. Coach LiaKos is expecting his squad to have another strong year. "We are looking to build on last year's success," he said. "We have experience on our side, and are looking forward to the season." The Longhorns finished eighth in Class C district competition last season. Coach Munger had 15 players listed on the pre-season roster. The veterans back this spring include a pair senior Charlie Haarberg, juniors Cody Cravey, Adam Dickey, Adam Moline and Travis Wheeler, plus sophomore Hunter Spady. "We have some returning golfers," Munger said. "We need to find a number-one. We will be in the hunt in the SPVA. Districts will be a challenge to make the top three teams." Eagles golf coach looking for improved play STEVE KODAD GAZETTE SPORTS EDITOR

OXFORD, Nebraska – Southern Valley High School boys golf coach Jeremy Epp is anxious to see how much better his golfers got since last spring. The Eagles have four returning letter winners from last season, led by two-year letterman John Dodson, a senior. Senior Derek Schoen and juniors Cole Maruhn and Schyler McClain also earned letter awards in 2010. Coach Epp has nine players on this year's team – but no freshmen included in the group. Epp sees a competitive Republican Plains Activities

Conference meet April 29 on the Southern Valley home course, the Cardinal Country Club in Oxford. "RPAC will be interesting again this year, with Alma the favorite, and Cambridge is returning good golfers," Epp said. The Southern Valley coach said his team is looking forward to the upcoming campaign. "I think the season will be a challenge, with seeing how much development took place in the off-season," Epp said, "Who is going to step up for the varsity level? Development throughout the season will be a key factor. The seniors will need to provide solid leadership and finish strong this year."

OBERLIN, Kansas – A veteran Kansas prep coach feels his Decatur Community High School golf team can be very competitive. Head coach Dick Ahlberg is in his 32nd year of teaching and coaching. Ahlberg has a pair of lettermen returning, and that duo was two of the best in the Kansas state Class 2A ranks last spring. Sophomore Kade Brown was the third-place medalist at last year's 2A state meet. Junior Garrett Berry also qualified for state last season. Brown and Berry both earned AllNorthwest Kansas League honors in 2010. Ahlberg has three seniors on this year's team – Killian Dellere, Jori Diederich and Rachelle Scott, and nine players total on the roster. The veteran Oberlin coach said he has strong individuals on this year's roster, and that should make for a competitive team. Decatur Community will enter the Class 2A regional meet at WaKeeney's Big Creek Golf Course May 16.

some promising freshman and a junior that have come out for the first time. All those players have had several years of success in our junior golf program." Bison tennis team returns seasoned players SPRING SPORTS 2011

McCook Daily Gazette

Wednesday, March 30, 2011 – 11C

STEVE KODAD GAZETTE SPORTS EDITOR

McCOOK, Nebraska – The success of the 2011 McCook High School girls tennis team may depend on how well head coach Matt Wiemers can get his doubles teams to gel together. The Bison girls should be strong in singles, but how well the McCook doubles teams will perform may be an unknown. The top two doubles players returning for the Bison will have new partners this spring after both competed at state in 2010. Senior Laura Brooks and sophomore Kaylee Samway qualified for state on the respective McCook No. 1 and No. 2 doubles teams last season. The other returning letter winners for Coach Wiemers will probably compete in singles during tournament competition. Sophomore Brooklynn Trew is expected to be at No. 1 singles for the Bison, with junior Nichole Eisenach likely playing at No. 2 singles. Brooks and Samway, plus senior Kelsey Gillen, junior Anna West and sophomore Kassidy Gillen will probably be the leading candidates to comprise McCook’s varsity doubles teams in tournament action. “We return four experienced players from last year’s squad,” Wiemers said. “We could be competitive if we can field the right combinations in doubles.”

Early-season success The McCook girls went unbeaten in four home dual meets in the first week of the season, with dominating wins over Hershey twice, Lexington and North Platte. While the Bison varsity dual meet lineup was altered in several of those early-season events, Wiemers will likely have a dual meet regular lineup of Trew at No. 1 singles, Brooks at No. 2 singles, Samway at No. 3 singles, Eisenach at No. 4 singles, West at No. 5 singles and Kassidy Gillen at No. 6 singles. The Bison coach hopes to field a competitive varsity lineup this season. “I think, honestly, we should be pretty strong,” he said. “I think our strong suit is going to be singles, whoever we stick in singles tournaments. “If we can figure out our doubles teams and get some girls to play together that will mesh together and make good doubles teams, I think we could be pretty strong. “With a team that’s kind of young, with basically just two seniors out of the (top) six, it will be interesting to see how

that many girls it’s that much easier as a coach to get girls into what you want them to do, so they know what’s going on,” Wiemers said. Kearney Catholic, fifth at the Class B state meet in 2010, also has a host of returning players, Wiemers said.

things pan out the first part of the season.” Wiemers welcomed over 40 girls for early-season drills. He employs a split-squad format in practices with the large number of squad members. The younger girls come in for the first session, then the varsity players work out in a late session. That split allows more one-on-one work due to those large number of players on the squad.

Grand Island Central Catholic is not in the district, but the Bison will face the Crusaders at several tournaments in the regular season. Wiemers

expects a strong GICC squad, with five girls returning from last year’s edition that finished tied for second in the Class B state meet standings.

Adams Central, another McCook foe during the regular season, has four regulars back. “They weren’t real strong last year, but when you return

Tough conference meet The Bison will face a tough challenge in the Greater Nebraska Athletic Conference tournament in North Platte Saturday, May 7. Class A teams Kearney, Norfolk, Columbus and North Platte will be entered along with McCook and Class B opponents Hastings, Lexington and Scottsbluff. Wiemers said Kearney always has a solid team, and Norfolk will be strong with five players returning from last year. “We’re going to have our hands full,” Wiemers said of the season slate. “We’ll play a lot of tough teams. Our girls will be ready to take on the challenge. We’re just going to have to play some good tennis from start to finish in order to have a good season.” The Bison head coach is looking forward to a strong season. “It should be a fun year with a great bunch of girls to work with,” he said. The Bison girls play their home meets at the Bison Courts just west of the Senior High School building and just north of the Ed Thomas YMCA. Gayle Korus is the assistant coach for the Bison this spring. Volunteers Greg Larson and Traci Wiemers also work with the McCook tennis girls.

Districts, state McCook will compete in the Class B-4 District along with Alliance, Hershey, Holdrege, Kearney Catholic, Lexington, Ogallala and Scottsbluff. The district meet will be held Friday, May 13, at a site yet to be determined by the Nebraska School Activities Association (NSAA). The four finishers in each of the two singles and two doubles divisions at districts qualify for the Class B state meet in Lincoln May 19-20. Wiemers said most of McCook’s district opponents return a majority of their varsity players from last year.
