Heritage Hills: 30 years of great golf in McCook TEE TIME 2011

2 – McCook Daily Gazette

McCOOK, Nebraska – “Let’s play golf!” Those words echoed across the hills west of McCook on May 21, 1981, as the then-new Heritage Hills Golf Course celebrated its grand opening. Delayed for a week by rainy spring weather, the excitement and anticipation of playing and exploring the new course was finally ready to be unleashed. This year, Heritage Hills marks its 30th anniversary by remembering the long and occasionally arduous journey that led to that day, as well as the positive effects that the course has had on McCook. *** In the mid-1970s, during an era when golf was booming nationally, a core group of McCook golfers envisioned the need to improve the city's golfing facilities. The process was not easy: obstacles such

as where to build the new course, how to generate revenue for it and how to maintain public support were met throughout the journey, and it took a significant number of individuals to see the project through to completion. *** The selection of the new golf course's location had hinged on whether or not the land could be developed into property that could be zoned for residential use, since sales of the housing and commercial properties would be essential to help support the construction of the new course. Because the site in the hills on the west edge of McCook was not in a flood plain, it not only could allow the needed housing development, it permitted the opening of prime highway frontage that held potential for commercial development.

Heritage Hills Golf Course

McCook, Nebraska

A warm, welcoming first hole greets golfers at Heritage Hills. The par-four plays 340 yards from the blue tees, with a fairway that falls down into a valley then climbs sharply and just to the right to a sand trap-surrounded green. Steve Kodad/McCook Daily Gazette

The somewhat simpler vision of a new 18-hole golf course had ballooned into a major project, encompassing 270 acres in total, 192 of those being appropriated for the

course itself.

*** Once the site for the course was selected, bids for construction of the course were opened April 4, 1980. It would

be crucial that bids be close to the architect’s estimate or the project would have to be scrapped or, at the very least, scaled back. See HERITAGE HILLS Page 3

Heritage Hills McCook Daily Gazette

The golf course design team of PhelpsBenz Golf Design, located in Evergreen, Colorado, estimated the construction cost at $602,234. A company based in Lincoln – Landscapes Unlimited – tendered the low bid, $42,000 under the estimate. LU was owned by Bill Kubly. who started his business in 1976 by doing small remodeling projects throughout the Midwest. Heritage Hills was one of his first 18-hole projects. (Today, his company is considered one of the premier golf course construction companies in the world, having completed over 600 design projects in the US and Caribbean, at courses such as Pebble Beach, Pinehurst and The Tradition. LU has received the “Golf Course Builder of the Year Award” four times, while Kubly himself has been recognized by Golf Inc. as one of the “Top 25 Most Influential People In Golf.”) Heritage Hills was one of the first courses built in Nebraska that revived the trend of “Links Style” golf. Links courses strive to use the native and natural vegetation in an attempt to conserve water, eliminate unneeded mowing and encourage “target” landing areas. It is this dense vegetation, along with the extreme topography on the western edge of McCook, that offers many breathtaking views. The same concepts that provide this magnificent splendor also imparts the penal aspects of the championship-designed layout. *** The “Hills” opened with much anticipation and fanfare throughout the state, but received its highest honor in November 1984 from no less an authority than Golf Digest magazine, whose editors named it among the “Best 75 Public Golf Courses” in the United States. Even now, thirty years after its opening, the course remains on many Nebraska golfers “must-play” lists, plus provides the community an abundance of publicity from both the state and national golfing media. *** The people of Heritage Hills are proud that their course is a McCook landmark and major attraction, so they take that responsibility seriously. Heritage Hills has a staff of over 20 employees; four full-time management and supervisory positions are coupled with 16 to 18 seasonal and part-time employees to serve club members and guests. It is a little-known fact that Heritage Hills has trained over 20 former employees who have gone on to pursue careers in the golf and turf indus-

Steve Kodad/McCook Daily Gazette try. Course superintendents, golf professionals, industry sales, landscaping and even golf course construction are a few of the career paths chosen. *** Golf in McCook is considered by many to be a centerpiece of Southwest Nebraska.'s recreational tourist trade. It is estimated between 5,500 and 6,000 non-residents play Heritage Hills every year, with the popular “Play the West” program hosting 2,500 to 3,000 guests yearly. The average PTW guest stays at least one night in McCook and 40 to 50 percent stay two nights. Golfers visiting McCook will spend an average of $165 to $185 each day. This translates to a direct infusion of nearly $1.5 million annually into the McCook economy. Additionally, many newer McCook residents have moved to the city because of the golf course and their ability to acquire affordable housing. In fact, Heritage Hills is often used as a recruiting tool by businesses looking to hire new employees. *** Heritage Hills is much more than a golf course. It is a catalyst for housing, employment, business recruitment, and a major economic contributor to the community. As a golf course, Heritage Hills is still as demanding and as respected a golf course as any in the state. Members and supporters should feel proud of the continued progress and achievements at the course. Allen Stunk, former editor of the Mc-

Cook Daily Gazette, seemed to be clairvoyant when he expressed himself in a September 5, 1980, editorial: “...in a 10 to 20 year period it is highly likely Mc-

Cookites will look at the 1980 high risk golf course project as one of the best things that happened in the overall growth of the community….”

24 of the immutable laws of golf – like it or not 6 – McCook Daily Gazette

LAW 1: No matter how bad your last shot was, you should have Inner Peace knowing that a worse one is yet to come. This law does not expire on the 18th hole, since it has the supernatural tendency to extend over the course of a tournament, a summer and, eventually, a lifetime.

LAW 2: Your best round of golf will be followed almost immediately by your worst round ever. The probability of the latter increases with the number of people you tell about the former. LAW 3: Brand new golf balls are water-magnetic. Though this cannot be proven in the lab, it is a known fact that the more expensive the golf ball, the greater its attraction to water. Expensive clubs have been known to be partly made with this most unusual natural alloy.

Likewise, a group you accidentally hit into will consist of a football player, a professional wrestler, a convicted murderer and an IRS agent – or some similar combination. LAW 7: All 3-woods are demon-possessed – none moreso than the one you are currently using. LAW 8: Golf balls from the same "sleeve" tend to follow one another, particularly out of bounds or into the water. See LAW 3. LAW 9: The last three holes of a round will automatically adjust your score to what it really should be.

LAW 4: Golf balls never bounce off trees back into play. If one does, the tree is breaking a law of the universe and should be cut down.

LAW 13: If it isn't broke, try changing your grip. LAW 14: It's surprisingly easy to hole a 50-foot putt when no one else is around to see . LAW 15: Counting on your opponent to inform you when he breaks a rule is like expecting him to make fun of his own haircut.

In the review, Woodland Hills was praised in these words:

“Golf at its absolute best. Pay any price to play at least once in your life. Naturally, there’s an expectation that such lofty praise would shield a stone-cold financial reality that playing at a course this top-shelf must be prohibitively expensive. Happily, that’s not the case. In fact, Woodland Hills is quite reasonably priced, even

NORTH PLATTE, Nebraska – While golf tourism is as popular now as it ever was, more and more people are finding an urge to explore – or perhaps even rediscover – places that allow them to stay a little closer to home, while still providing the quality of experience that makes a more time-consuming (and financially costly) excursion worth the trip. If you are among those wanting to do just that, it might be a good idea to take the reasonably short drive to North Platte, where you’ll find a trio of splendid and serene full-length courses. Iron Eagle Golf Course

The Iron Eagle Municipal Golf Course, located at 2401 Halligan Dr. in North Platte, is a full 18-hole layout set on the southern banks of the South Platte River. Measuring 6,401 yards, the par-72 course is actually a fairly easy – and definitely scenic – walk, but the architecture of the course, which allows the river to come into play more than once, will test the wits of golfers from all levels of experience. Iron Eagle also offers its guests access to a pro shop with a full line of golf equipment and accessories, plus a snack bar with food and beverages available for purchase. Cart rentals are also available. Greens fees start at $14 for 9 holes of golf ($24 for a full 18) Monday through Friday, with discounts for

Lake Maloney Golf Club Situated 6 miles south of North Platte, off U.S. Highway 83, the Lake Maloney Golf Club is an 18-hole course that offers players wide, lush fairways and well-maintained greens, as well as some breathtaking views of the lake at many of the holes. The course’s clubhouse features an equipment shop, as well as snack foods and beverages. Greens fees start at $14 for 9 holes ($24 for 18) on weekdays, with cart rental prices starting at $8 per rider.

River’s Edge Golf Club The River’s Edge Golf Club, located at 1008 West 8th St., is the home of the North Platte Country Club. This 18hole, par-70 course presents a number of challenges to all skill levels. The level layout features a mix of old and young trees, plus a creek that comes into play. River’s Edge, a private club, offers a full 18-hole round of golf for $35. Cart rental starts at $10. For more information about River’s Edge, contact club PGA pro Tom Legate at 308-532-7550.
