Indulge In Cosmetic, Not Confections

As the age of Ozempic and the return of heroin chic is becoming standard, our hunger isn’t quieted, but muted. These drugs are now embedding themselves into our daily routines and into our perception of our bodies, not only shaping the way we eat but also our desires.

Appetite, which once announced itself with loud urgency, flickers into a somber and polite tone. Yet, you can’t ignore what lingers beneath the stillness. Beneath this restriction and restraint, something is unrestingly persistent, humming quietly beneath the surface.

Everyone feels an increasing urge to be as small as possible. But as plates shrink into depletion, and indulgences are a rarity, the longing for sweets doesn’t thin.

Restless and searching, it simply finds a way into another sense. In this new landscape, cravings must be filled in another way, through scent, textures, and the bizarre rituals of beauty routines. What we don’t allow ourselves to grace our tongues can be absorbed into cheeks, glossed upon lips, and spritzed into the air. Indulgence is now ambiance, something worn rather than chewed.

Perfume is one of the most notable translations of this shift. Gourmand scents, coated in caramel, coffee, vanilla musk, and cream, serve as an invisible feast. In the wake of our obsession with Yves Saint Laurent’s Black Opium or Kayali’s Vanilla 28, these scents have coaxed the body into a vessel for the desert. To wear them is to indulge without consequence, to consume without swallowing.

Beauty saunters right behind. Lip smacker balm, donut-glazed skin, and pastryflavored lips blur the line between confectionery and cosmetics. These products from brands like Rhodes, Lanige, and Elf borrow language directly from desserts, using words like glaze, sugar, and cream not just as descriptions but as aspirations. In turn, sweetness is now performative, something that you display, carry, and eventually embody until the body begins to feel like a “sweet treat.”
