MERIDIAN’S CONTINUED FOCUS - INSPIRING

T

his is a year of transition for Meridian. At the end of December, Meridian will change CEO’s and begin a new chapter. I have done a great deal of reflecting on the last 19 years, the time during which I have been President/CEO, and on the 36 years I have been at Meridian. There is much to be proud of, and so much left to do!

M

eridian has had only two CEO’s during 41 of its 48 years. My predecessor, Dr. Doug Starr, and I shared a common vision of what a community behavioral health center should focus on. It should provide compassionate, respectful, evidence-based, and effective treatment; it must engage with its communities to help each one meet its most pressing challenges while being good stewards of public funds; and, it must contribute to the overall health and well-being of its communities in order to prevent illness and foster resilience. If it provides treatment, one at a time or one family at a time, if it prioritizes the needs of the community, and if it promotes wellness, the impact of a community behavioral health center ripples through the entire community and through generations.

A

s I plan to retire, many of our community partners and clients have shared stories that reflect the immensity of that ripple effect. Most powerful, was a young man who spoke at an event about the impact I had on him, without ever having met him, simply by ensuring Meridian’s presence in his community. Others have recounted stories, personal and community-wide, of the power of advocacy (particularly on behalf of those who are often silenced by their illness or by society’s disregard) and of innovative partnerships to address problems often seen as “social ills”, but really the result of untreated illnesses. Treatment for moms whose substance use makes them unable to lovingly parent, services to children who experience trauma, outreach and care for those who, through their illness or addiction, get tangled up in the criminal justice system – all of these ripple through our community to make it and its members more vibrant, healthy, and successful.

C 4

reating that healthier community, seeing a previously despairing person recover their voice, their health, and their path in life creates another ripple – it inspires. It inspires others to get care, it inspires the community to eliminate stigma and see those Meridian Behavioral Healthcare, Inc.

affected by mental illnesses and addictions for who they are – their wonderful family member, neighbor, or colleague – not their illness. It inspires people, staff, and the community to service. The same young man I mentioned earlier has started fundraisers and looks to how he can help others. The effect we have in the community inspires our staff. They, in turn, further inspire the community to get involved. And the ripple grows – and maybe even becomes a wave.

I

am most proud of the team at Meridian. Each member of our team shares this commitment to compassion, excellent treatment, and service to community. They inspire me, they give me the energy to be a voice, to pursue innovation, and to widen the ripple across our region. That has been the source of our growth and success.

A

s I end my tenure here, I am confident that the legacy I inherited from Dr. Starr, and have striven to carry forward, will continue with Don Savoie, Meridian’s new CEO. He shares the same commitment to individual care, partnership and collaboration, and community wellness. Meridian will continue to grow, and so will the wave it creates as it pursues its vision that hope, recovery, and wellness are within everyone’s reach. In gratitude,

Dr. Doug Starr and Dr. Maggie Labarta in 2000

HELPED IN FIRST SIX MONTHS OF PROGRAM

Through contributions from First Federal Bank of Florida, The Suwannee Valley Community Foundation, The Gildard Bennett Fund, and many other supporters, we renovated The Williams Manor Group Home and reopened it as The Family Center at Williams Manor, providing children and their families with a more comfortable environment in which to receive treatment. So far, the center has seen 732 of the total 916 Columbia County children to which Meridian has provided services.

LOOKING AHEAD At the end of the day, our values, mission, and vision are really all about one thing - a better prepared community.

Each county’s unique needs and challenges demands we consistently innovate within behavioral healthcare. We’ll continue to expand our reach through revolutionary programs like, Mobile Response Teams and Telehealth. As seen on page 7, our service capacity is on a steep rise. We’ll continue to analyze our successes, such as the satisfaction surveys at right and widen our breadth through service excellence. We saw 15% more patients through Telehealth this fiscal year and you can be certain we will continue to scale our infrastructure in order to keep up with demand. Meridian received 3 grants and/or contracts totaling ~$3.2M this fiscal year. We will continue to value our partnerships as they are the driving force behind our initiatives and ultimate success.
