The courthouse features deep, canyon-like spaces and experiences in and around the building. This was accomplished by analyzing the reaction of the loofah mesh and spray foam insulation and translating it into a sculpted amalgam of pointed, elliptical volumes. As the disparate user groups meet in the courtroom from their specified zones, the independent volumes will coalesce into one mass.

The design began with an investigation of an interlocking L-shaped residential unit. A strategy was employed whereby a sunken living room placed above a double height living room allowed for another unit to be inserted between. Thus a quasi-modular system developed. The original housing unit was scaled and transformed to create differing spatial experiences. Once the appropriate transformations were identified, they were programmed along an axis stretching eastward across the site. Precast concrete, light gauge steel trusses, and one-way cast-in-place concrete joists are but a few of the exposed construction techniques this building demonstrates. In an effort to illustrate a complete site design, the entire outdoor area has been programmed to coincide with the building mass adjacent to it, blurring the line between indoor and outdoor space.
