Gujarat having longest coastline, has developed strong infrastructure in ports and related sectors, including coastal marine police force, maritime engineering, port management, port led railway, coastal environment, in the last decade. After having achieved these overall infrastructure it is quintessential to develop human resource for accelerating the pace of development in maritime sector. It is heartening to know that B. K. At B.K. School of Business Management, our endeavour is to create a pool of talented professionals who have the knowledge, ability and above all, the right attitude and resilience to work in their chosen area of specialisation. The goal of our management programme is to provide trained manpower for the growing maritime sector in the State as well as the country. A two-year Post Graduate Diploma in Port Management was started by the Gujarat University at B.K. School of Business Management in the year 2006. The School and the Gujarat University recognised the significance of Maritime Management and now the programme is converted as a full-fledged MBA programme in Maritime Management with several specialisations. The School and the alumni have developed a strong network with several organisations in the Maritime industry. The students who passed out of this programme are now spread all over the country and abroad also. The School has strived to provide a balanced approach towards the theoretical and practical aspects of the programme. A number of practitioners from relevant fields are associated with the programme as visiting faculty. Gujarat University is engaged in various Post Graduate programmes at the University Departments apart from the regular courses taught in the pure subjects for various emerging industrial sectors. These programmes are interdisciplinary in nature and looking at the present needs of the students and the job prospects at the regional and national level. Introduction to Master of Business Administration in Maritime Management Studies is one such initiative by the Gujarat University. B. K. SCHOOL OF BUSINESS MANAGEMENT

Established in 1976, B. K. School of Business Management has a wealth of experience and skill in delivering management courses at many levels to students all over the nation. The School s programmes are designed to address the wide variety of personal development and training needs of those wishing to enter the commercial sector, and to support the continued development and workplace exibility of those already in employment. The School has expanded its interests in the area of tertiary education and has included Maritime courses within its portfolio of new courses. The School recognises the signi cance of Maritime management and is now dedicated to providing a world class service in the teaching of the course at Master of Business Administration (MBA) level. To this end, the School has secured a team of exceptionally quali ed and dedicated maritime experts who deliver the courses in an enthusiastic way that is balanced in its academic and practical approach. 5

School INFRASTRUCTURE The School has a well laid out campus located in the sprawling 260 acres main campus of Gujarat University. With its presence in the green belt of the city, the campus provides an extremely enthused learning atmosphere. Over the years, B. K. School has adapted to the various changes in the business environment. The School is equipped with a seminar hall, conference room, library, reading room, multimedia classroom, executive room and computer centre. LIBRARY The library houses more than 4000 volumes of carefully selected books for reading and reference purposes. The library also subscribes to over 30 journals and newspapers and has a good collection of video tapes, CDs and DVDs. The School also subscribes to online databases such as PROWESS. The students also have access to the Central Library of Gujarat University that houses over 335000 books and can accommodate about 600 readers. CLASSROOM ENVIRONMENT The classrooms are provided with LCD projector and integrated audio-visual system. In addition, all the classrooms are Wi-Fi enabled. Gujarat University is linked up with EMRC (Education Media Research Centre), which enables the School to remain connected with other universities in the country. The high tech environment facilitates group learning and access to the world of information. 7


RATIONALE FOR THE INTRODUCTION OF THE PROGRAM

The maritime industry is a key component of today s world economy. In excess of 90% of global cargo movements are undertaken by sea and a complex interaction of business organisations generates a need for professionals who can make a positive strategic contribution to the maritime industry worldwide. PROGRAM AT GLANCE This innovative programme of MBA Mar itime Management is offered by B. K. School of Business Management, which capitalises on the long standing experience of the B. K. School of Business Management in delivering master s programmes at Master of Business Administration levels. The two years full time Post Graduate Diploma in Port Management was started by the Gujarat University at B. K. School of Business Management in the year 2006. With increase signi cance of Maritime Industry, the Port Management has been re-structured as Maritime Management Program. The two year Full time MBA-Maritime Management Program has been painstakingly designed in consultation with leading gures from the Maritime Industry to equip current and future Maritime leaders with the skills, knowledge and tools they need to manage their business successfully. The MBA - Maritime Management spread over four semesters combines current theory with the practical skills and techniques required for managing all aspects of an organisation such as Operation, Marketing, & Finance, through to whole - organisation Strategic Analysis and Planning with special reference to the Maritime sector. 8

The programme provides adequate coverage of the soft aspects of management education such as communication and interpersonal skills along with ample exposure to the realities of Port Operations, Shipping and Logistics. The programme also provides ample opportunities for students to network with their colleagues who will all have worked in various areas of the maritime sector and also with the representatives currently working within the industry. The academic year starts in the month of August. The rst and the second semesters consist of compulsory courses aimed at providing a sound foundation for all the basic principles and tools of management. At the end of second semester, the students undergo a Summer Internship for a period of 6-8 weeks in leading ports and/or allied institutions. In the third semester, the students are required to choose one among the three specializations offered by the college under MBA-Maritime Management namely, 1. Port Management 2. Shipping and Logistics Management 3. Coastal Resources and Infrastructure Development The students are later required to undergo a comprehensive and detailed 6 months project work based upon an original research and/or consultancy project as part of last semester. Additionally, industrial visits to various Port terminals, Container Freight Stations and allied institutions are arranged during the rst three semesters to get the students acquainted with the maritime industry.


ADMISSION PROCESS B. K. School of Business Management selects the students through Common Management Aptitude Test (CMAT). The school has consistently attracted top students appearing in CMAT from all across the nation. EVALUATION The students’ performance is evaluated through internal as well as external assessment. The internal evaluation is continuous and is based on mid semester examinations, quizzes, assignments, projects, presentations, attendance and class participation, apart from written examinations. Live projects, case studies, role plays, group discussions and seminars are incorporated with the regular lectures, in order to acquaint the students with the rigorous of competitive corporate environment. The external evaluation is in the form of University Examinations at the end of each semester. A two month summer internship evaluates the students’ performance in professional set ups. Also, a grand project provides comprehensive evaluation of the students’ conceptual clarity and overall understanding of industry dynamics. . 10

The goal is to create exemplary leadership development opportunities at the school. Recruiters recognizes the graduates for their ability to work well in teams and to take up the lead. Placement Committee The placement committee comprises of a group of student volunteers. They coordinates the placement activities on campus for the nal year students. Apart from this core activity, they design and publish Placement Brochure for the current batch, initiate corporate dialogues in various cities, arranges special lectures of guest faculties from various industry verticals and organizes summer placements as well for the junior batch. Following are the current Placement Committee members: CULTURAL COMMITTEE The cultural committee ensures that alongside academics, student don't miss out on the fun part of the college. This club plays a vital role in organizing various events like Renaissance, Alumni meets, Sport competitions, special cultural events, run-for-a-cause events etc. at the School as well as University level.

The curriculum of MBA-Maritime Management at B. K. School of Business Management is industry based and every course in the programme is supplemented by guest lecturers from the maritime industry professionals. The students get practical insights about how the theoretical concepts are practised in the organisations. The corporate experts interact with the students and share their experience and real time cases. SUMMER INTERNSHIP The Summer Internship forms an important and integral part of the MBA-Maritime Management programme. A period of 6-8 weeks is scheduled between the second and the third semesters to enable them to test their theoretical understanding in the field by working as summer interns in leading ports and allied organisations. As summer trainees, the students not only apply the management concepts to their assignment, but also get acquainted with contemporary managerial practices while working in a professional set up. The training culminates in the submission of a detailed summer project report and a presentation on the summer project work.
