Mission Mayo Performing Arts Center, a 501(c)3 nonprofit organization, presents a wide range of programs that entertain, enrich, and educate the diverse population of the region and enhance the economic vitality of Northern New Jersey.

MPAC brings joy into the lives of so many people, and we’d like to take this opportunity to express our gratitude to you, our most important donors, for your generous support in FY2023.

Our FY23 Annual Report is a chance to reflect on the past year and the amazing accomplishments that this organization has achieved.

This past season has been full of great moments and memories, from opening night with Renée Elise Goldsberry, to our most successful Starlight Ball ever, to our thriving partnership with Art in the Atrium to our spring production of Matilda. We are thrilled that audiences are returning, that classes are again full, and that we continue to expand events and programs that connect with our diverse community.

Arts in the Community MPAC’s Arts in Community initiative is based on the best practices of Creative Placemaking.* With our Arts in the Community program, we expand our commitment to providing creative arts programming to spaces outside of the Theater.

Vision: To serve as the central platform in the Morristown area for local artists, members and visitors to celebrate the arts in our diverse community.

Mission: To develop the presence of diversity and arts in our community.

An evolving field of practice that leverages the power of the arts to serve a communityʼs interest, while driving a broader agenda for change in a way that builds character and quality of place.

Celebrating Diversity MPAC provides a stage where we proudly amplify BIPOC voices, increase arts access and education, highlight issues related to diversity, equity, inclusion and accessibility and utilize the arts as a catalyst for cross-cultural collaborations that celebrate and embrace our community's rich diversity. We are committed to implementing programs that incorporate strategies to dismantle inequalities, eliminate barriers and empower all voices. Our Arts in the Community program offers free events throughout the community, increasing access to the arts locally to all and engaging culturally diverse artists. The more inclusive we are, the better we are.

At MPAC, we strive for: • Diversity, Equity, Inclusion and Accessibility in our workforce, volunteers, programming and patrons; • A culture of respect for all, regardless of background, means or any identity-based differences; and • Community engagement and an awareness that our actions have the power to tell stories and amplify voices.

Pride Fest MPAC highlighted our support for the LGBTQ+ community through our partnership of Out In Jersey Magazine, participation in the annual Morris County Pride Festival, flag and logo visibility during Pride Month, and a Pride Night reception prior to Rufus Wainwright.

Juneteenth MPAC proudly partnered with the Morris Museum, Morris Arts, Sankofa Morris and Art In The Atrium to support the events of Juneteenth Weekend 2023.

COMMUNITY ENGAGEMENT

Creative Aging This year Mayo Performing Arts Center was one of the first arts organizations in the state to receive a Creative Aging Initiative grant from the New Jersey State Council on the Arts.

Funding enabled MPAC to provide participants at the Cornerstone Family Program’s Social Adult Day Center in Morristown with two eight-session residencies culminating in an 8’ x 12’ mural at the center.

Led by MPAC Teaching Artist Dan Fenelon and Community Engagement Director Kadie Dempsey, participants produced sophisticated artworks by learning how to create patterns and work with color and form. Much like a quilting circle, the program enabled the seniors to work together towards a common goal – fostering a sense of shared purpose – and encouraged storytelling by individuals in the group.

“Theatre of Light celebrates the start of winter through music, song and dance in a joyful and diverse celebration designed to bring

our entire community together.”

Theatre of Light On December 4, 2022 the universal symbol of light illuminated the rich cultural diversity of our community when MPAC partnered with Morris Arts to transform the Vail Mansion Plaza into a “Theatre of Light.”

The 3rd Annual Theatre of Light event was a culmination of weeks of free community engagement workshops with diverse organizations throughout Morristown in which community members created stars to be features at the event.

Over 1,000 attendees enjoyed entertainment, music and more, while being invited to express their personal wishes for the season, which were added to the light display.

Transformational Giving Mayo Performing Arts Center expresses our most profound gratitude to the New Jersey State Council on the Arts for supporting our organization in myriad ways during our 20222023 Season. NJSCAʼs significant annual general operating support, combined with Capital Arts funding to assist with restoration of our majestic venue and Creative Aging funding to launch a new creative initiative for seniors, has strengthened our historic venue and innovative programs, helping us become a premier performing arts presenter in the state of New Jersey.

Season Overview Great shows have returned to MPAC! This past season featured one amazing concert after another.

MPAC audiences were treated to rock favorites like Chicago and Boz Scaggs, comedians including Jerry Seinfeld (in his first postpandemic performance), Broadway stars Lea Salonga and Leslie Odom, Jr., the majesty of New Jersey Ballet’s Nutcracker (11 sold out performances!), the funky soul of Trombone Shorty and the best in jazz, dance, classical, comedy, theatre and more that you have come to expect on our stage.

Arts Access

Family and Sensory Friendly Shows Through family-oriented programs, concerts and events, field trips, performing arts school classes and more, MPAC makes arts experiences possible for over 40,000 children and their families every year.

Our extensive lineup of family shows features fun and often interactive experiences for families including musicals, magic, storytime, theater and dance.

MPAC sensory friendly performances have been designed to create a supportive, welcoming experience for people with sensory sensitivities. Each performance features modulated sound and light levels and a relaxed environment where the audience is free to talk, vocalize, and leave and re-enter the seating area.

MPAC held four sensory friendly events this past season with plans to double the amount for next season.

MPAC proudly partners with Employment Horizons to hire individuals with disabilities and other barriers to employment. Staff members and volunteers are trained in assisting and working with patrons with specific needs.

ARTS ACCESS

Arts Access Each year, MPAC provides thousands of tickets to local residents through our partnerships with social service non-profits, healthcare organizations and veterans' organizations.

These organizations have been vetted by MPAC for their ability to provide services to lower-income families, underserved community members, and those who have served in our military. This year, over 1,800 complimentary tickets were provided.

Donations make this program possible by helping to offset MPAC’s costs to offer these complimentary tickets and administer the program. Partner organizations included: •

VetTix, which offers tickets to active and retired military;

Families First, a program from the State of New Jersey that provides access to the arts to people from economically distressed families;

Education The Buses Are Back!

The school buses returned to South Street this season! After a two-year hiatus in field trips due to the pandemic, this spring buses off-loaded thousands of excited children who were thrilled to experience the arts and reinforce their academic learning at the same time.

For many children, it was the first time they had ever seen a live performance.

Subjects ranged from Black history to math and science; and slam poetry to immigration.

We had a student in attendance with us today whose family immigrated from El Salvador just two weeks ago and today’s field trip was a wonderful example of the educational, artistic experiences made available to our students.”

Earth Week

BASF is proud to partner with our New Jersey neighbors at MPAC and National Geographic to present programming that fosters greater awareness of the incredible world that surrounds us. At BASF, our purpose, “We create chemistry for a sustainable future,” means we are focused on developing innovative technologies to help power, feed, move, house and improve the lives of the growing world community.

Sustainability Series BASF has been the sole sponsor of MPACʼs Earth Week Sustainability presentations by National Geographic Live! for 11 years. This year’s topic, presented on April 26, 2023, was Coral Kingdoms and Empires of Ice with speakers David Doubilet (underwater photographer) and Jennifer Hayes (aquatic biologist and photojournalist). Due to BASF’s generous support, all activities were free to the public. Activities included a morning presentation made available to up to 1,000 students, a lunch-and-learn Q&A with the speakers, and an evening lecture attended by over 1,000 members of the public.

Just as importantly, we aim to create the human chemistry -- connections between people, organizations and institutions -- that fosters a collaborative and cooperative approach to solving the world’s sustainability challenges.

Sustainability at MPAC MPAC has positioned itself as a leader in sustainability among arts and entertainment venues. We are committed to reducing waste, heightening recycling efforts, and becoming energy efficient.

In 2019, we were the first entertainment venue in New Jersey to receive Sustainable Business status.

Our venue maintains this status through using: •

a comprehensive recycling program that allows us to recycle 75% of our waste;

EDUCATION

The Performing Arts School MPAC’s Performing Arts School (PAS) has been providing world-class arts education since 2005 and has grown exponentially year after year. This popular performance-based theatrical training program offers students, ages 3 - adult, a quality theatre arts education.

This season, most classes reached maximum capacity with over 800 students participating in spring, fall and summer camp courses, gaining skills in musical theatre, acting, vocal technique, and more. Additional classes were added to offset the incredible demand. To ensure access to students from all economic backgrounds, MPAC awarded over $15,000 in financial aid to students in need.

This season, serving our youngest students, MPAC added a Broadway Babies course for 3-4 year olds. Popular returning classes included Acting & Improv for Adults and Cabaret for Adults. Students not only gained performing arts skills – they built priceless friendships and self-esteem while having a great time!

Launched in 2017, The Miracle Project™ at MPAC provides evidence-based theatre arts education to students with specific needs in New Jersey where the autism diagnosis rate is among the highest in the nation.

The

Miracle Project™ In 2023, MPAC completed our 7th full year offering The Miracle Project™, a fully inclusive theatre program for students with autism and varying abilities. This creative and dynamic socialization program enables students to express themselves through music, dance, acting, storytelling and writing. Children and young adults of all abilities grow in skills and spirit while working with highly trained staff to create and perform musicals.

This season, MPAC offered four 14-week courses during the fall and spring semesters and a ten-session summer camp, enriching the lives of 82 students. Final performances took place on MPAC’s Main Stage where all students performed in shows such as The Little Mermaid, Oliver, Peter Pan and You’re a Good Man, Charlie Brown.

Final performances were personalized to showcase the special talents and ideas of each student.

Performing Arts School

“On the Road” Educational Outreach Programs Quality arts education programs are delivered to young students with access challenges through Performing Arts School (PAS) On the Road. MPAC provides enrichment programs at partner social service organizations that are dedicated to serving lower-income community members. Through the support of grants and generous donors, MPAC offers these programs free of charge to student participants and our partner organizations. Students are encouraged to use their imaginations while developing selfawareness and confidence.

Neighborhood House We were thrilled to continue our longest-running outreach program at Cornerstone Family Services’ Neighborhood House in Morristown, which provides services to newly immigrated families and lower-income families who are living below the poverty level.

During this 10-week program, MPAC teaching artists introduced students, grades K-5, to the performing arts through theatre games, improvisation, singing, dance and movement. To celebrate the students’ achievement at the end of the program, they performed a final showcase for a proud audience of family, friends and peers.

Paterson & Passaic Boys & Girls Clubs For our 5th summer, MPAC returned to The Boys and Girls Clubs of Paterson and Passaic to offer a theater-arts enrichment program at both locations. Students, ages 9-12, spent six weeks cultivating acting, singing and movement skills while learning choreography from various Broadway musicals. These activities, along with ice breaker games and improvisation, brought joy to students who were eager and grateful to learn.

Student Recognition Honoring student arts excellence in area schools 2023 Runner-Up

Program Cover Contests Fifty-four students from area schools participated in our annual Student Art Gallery Exhibit and Program Cover Art Contest. Students are asked to create a program book cover design based on the theme “Imagine! Discover! Create! Celebrate MPAC and the Arts!”

Music Student of the Month Now in its 20th year, the Music Student of the Month (MSOM) program honors Morris County middle and high school students, not only for their excellence as musicians but for dedication, leadership, and commitment to their entire school community. This year we honored 58 students from 26 schools and 17 towns throughout Morris County. All honorees were invited to participate in a year-end concert on June 14, 2023. The concert was held outdoors on the Vail Mansion Plaza to kick off MPAC’s Arts in the Community Series, giving our community a chance to appreciate these talented student musicians.

MSOM is generously supported by a grant from The Walter F. and Alice Gorham Foundation.

All works were exhibited in our Art Upstairs gallery from March 7 - 21. The winning selection was announced at a reception for participants, parents and teachers, and the winning work was used as MPAC’s program book cover from April-June.

EDUCATION

Poetry Out Loud On February 15, 2023, ten students represented their schools in the New Jersey Poetry Out Loud Region 4 Competition.

A partnership of the National Endowment for the Arts, the Poetry Foundation, and state arts agencies, including the New Jersey State Council on the Arts, Poetry Out Loud is a national arts education program that encourages high school students from across the country to study poetry and participate in a recitation competition, beginning at the regional level and advancing to state and national levels.

Students prepared three different poems that they recited in each round. Winners went on to compete in the state competition on March 6, 2023. This was the first time in three years that all competitions were back in person, and it was wonderful to see all of the talented students back on the MPAC stage.

In-School Residencies This year, MPAC’s Education Department ran 12 school residency programs serving 58 classrooms that were customized for each individual classroom to complement academic learning. Subjects ranged from history to reading and improvisation to dance.

Highlights included MPAC’s first school-wide residency program at Normandy Park School where we worked with students in grades K-5 on a Dance Through the Decades Residency. At High Bridge Middle School, MPAC conducted two separate residencies: 7th graders developed playwriting skills and 8th graders worked on Shakespeare.

There was no doubt about it – Matilda the Musical was a smash!

All four performances between June 2 and June 4, 2023 were sold out, with over 5,100 total patrons in attendance. A cast of 52 young performers dazzled MPAC audiences with their skill and showmanship. The performers spent weeks working with a professional director, music director, choreographer, Equity guest artists, crew and other industry professionals and the results showed on MPACʼs stage!

EDUCATION

The Performing Arts Company As MPAC’s musical ambassadors, the teen Performing Arts Company (PAC) gives back to the community by providing entertainment free of charge to organizations, fundraisers, community events, hospitals, nursing homes and festivals.

The Company is made up of over two dozen of our most talented students between the ages of 13-18. At no cost to the organization, the group can come to your event or facility and perform as little as one Broadway musical number, or as much as a 60 minute revue.

Every performance is customized to fit the needs of the organization.

Over the years, PAC students have performed at The White House, Radio City Music Hall, Madison Square Garden and on Broadway with Kristin Chenoweth. They have also been featured on the MPAC stage with many high profile artists, including Patti LuPone, Kristin Chenoweth, Sutton Foster, Vanessa Williams, Linda Eder, Foreigner, Brian Stokes Mitchell, and more!

Escape to the Vineyard The 24th Annual Starlight Ball “Escape to the Vineyard” was held at The Park Savoy Estate on Friday, November 16, 2022, honoring Adam Greene and Trend Motors Volkswagen for their tremendous ongoing support of MPAC. The event raised $571,689 for MPAC’S education programs. On that evening, 246 guests were dazzled by MPAC’s Performing Arts Company’s amazing performance and tribute to the honoree.

Immediately following the performance, auctioneer CK Swett helped raise $165,750 in less than 15 minutes during the Live Fund a Need.

Spotlight on:

Trend Motors’ generous support of MPAC began in 2019 and became critical during a time when the theater was mandated to remain shuttered for the summer of 2020. That year Trend became the title sponsor of the Trend Motors Drive-In Concert Series. Trend Motors’ support was an essential lifeline of funding for MPAC, especially during a time when MPAC could not operate at full capacity due to COVID restrictions.

Visual Arts Art Galleries MPAC’s two gallery spaces, the Art Upstairs Gallery and the Starlight Gallery, hosted 251 artists this season.

The Art Upstairs Gallery traditionally hosts group art shows. Significant exhibits included Art in the Atrium (ATA), the County College of Morris Student art show, Essex Watercolor Club, and New Jersey Art Association. The Starlight Gallery typically hosts individual shows.

This year, MPAC added open gallery hours on Tuesdays from 12 pm – 2 pm, in addition to being open on show nights and by appointment.

The Arts Upstairs Gallery is a gift of the John and Margaret Post Foundation. The Starlight Gallery is a gift of Wendy and Jay Birnbaum.

Art in the Atrium

Art in the Atrium’s mission is to articulate the value of Black visual arts and its role in culture. By partnering with MPAC, ATA brings African-American fine art to Morristown and represents Black art excellence in New Jersey.

Volunteers MPAC’s volunteers provide a level of customer service that sets MPAC apart. They are our ushers, ticket takers, concessionaires, merchandisers, line managers, and more.

MPAC’s story is that of a dedicated group of volunteers who would not let this Morristown institution fall under the wrecking ball. Without its dedicated volunteers, MPAC’s goal of excellence in patron experience would not be realized. Some of MPAC’s volunteers have been with the organization for 25 years. MPAC’s volunteers are part of the MPAC family, and many of MPAC’s regular patrons have befriended them over the years. The volunteer program has grown into one that is emulated and envied by many Performing Arts Centers nationwide.

It has become somewhat of a cliché to say ‘We can’t do what we do without [their] help,’ but it is true.

Their commitment and love for MPAC is unrivaled.

Finance In fiscal year 2023, MPAC had operating revenues and expenses of approximately $13 million.

Ticket sales, rentals and related fees were our primary source of income, accounting for 67% of total operating income for FY2023. Contributed and in-kind support and other earned income comprised approximately 33% of operating income.

MPAC maintained a strong financial position, with net assets of $20.8 million at June 30, 2023.
