ABOUT ME When I was young I remember playing The Sims as a hobby. I always found myself spending hours on the computer designing all sorts of houses and mansions for my virtual city. As I grew, I have realized I do not want this to be just a hobby. I want to turn my favorite activity into something real. Following years of living and studying abroad, I am making my dream come true by pursuing an Interior Design career in the United States.

My name is May. I am an Interior Designer whose interests started from a video game but evolved to a long-term career. I recently graduated with a Bachelor of Fine Arts in Interior Architecture and Design at the Academy of Art University in San Francisco, California.

My interests range from residential to corporate and commercial design. I enjoy space planning and studies of user interactions within spaces. Aesthetic and function go hand in hand, and success is when my works are meaningful to somebody and not being just a pretty box.

Besides designing, I love traveling, exploring different cultures and foods. I respect diversity and believe it is the key to a successful me.

CONCEPT Aztec Map were often made for display, not to be worn. You will see masks placed on stone or on skulls because they are design to be ornaments. Aztec masks were made out of natural materials and valuable gems. Common materials are green or black stone, wood, obsidian (a hard volcanic glass/ stone), turquoise, ceramics, jade, gold pyrite, coral, and shell.

PROGRAM Located on the second floor of 13 Wood st building, Ernest Mariotto wish to remodel the existing 3 bedrooms apartment into a one bedroom apartment. He likes to spend time in his study room for work and want a space to entertain occasional guests. The client favors negative spaces and open living area, as well as aesthetic over comfort.

FLOOR PLAN The unit features a grand foyer that serve as an art gallery for the owner. This is also the main transition space between the private space above and the public space below. The study / library room is adjacent to the owner's master bedroom. The great room features a living, dining, and kitchen combo will be dedicated for entertaining purposes. These private and public area are also connected through an indoor padio that open to above to achieve better natural lights throughout the apartment.

FOYER / ART GALLERY Upon stepping into the apartment unit, the owner will be welcomed with a large gallery spaces filled with his favorite art works. This room also look out to the indoor padio. The main focal point is the beautiful Nekton stools sculpture by architect Zaha Hadid. The

two large divider walls on each side also serve as art work display cases.

With the concept of Aztec Mask, this space is designed mainly for the look.

Other materials used that tie with the concept are grey marble tiles floor and dark wood panels for wall and ceiling.

GREAT ROOM Aesthetic over comfort! An interesting owner's preference about his living space is something that also has in common with the concept of Aztec Mask. The Great Room, besides being the main entertaining space of the apartment, will also serve as another art filled room, featuring many designer furniture, such as the Liu armchair, Welles chandelier by Gabriel Scott, and Henry Timi's dining chairs.

MASTER BEDROOM The owner utmost private space is the master bedroom.

The design is clean and minimalist, featuring a masculine color palette of grey, dark brown, and black.

The design ties closely to the concept of Aztec Mask by having many eye catching furniture pieces and a lot of negative spaces. The master bed lies on a beautiful Shou Sugi Ban built-in wood structure, decorated with two Bec Britain Helix hanging pendants as bedside light fixtures. These lights hang beautiful cut out marble pieces at the bottom like sculptures.

Placing by the window is a Viyet Woodcutters chaise lounge, made from Italian Ebony wood.

MASTER ROOM The master room is within the private area of the apartment, which also feature a study / library space adjacent to the master bedroom. A sliding glass door separates the two area whenever the owner has work related guests in his study room.

ZōN is a trendy restaurant and lounge, serving new American cuisine in "zone-sized" portions.

Customers can enjoy live music every night while dining at the main room. The space capacity is up to 180 seated guests.

This dining concept went on to be the inspiration for the interior design of the space.

Through the zoning strategy, the layout will be divided into specific zones with clear and easy circulation for customers.

ZōN introduces the tapas dining cuisine. Each dishes is served in small portions to encourage the sharing experience between diners. Table manners are more casual while dining so chatting while eating is perfectly normal.

Taking advantage of such dynamic tapas cuisine, at ZōN, apart from dining, guests are encouraged to interact not only at table but also within exciting zones throughout the restaurant, bar, and lounge.

BAR AREA The bar area features 20 cocktail bar seats and 28 high table seats that serve drinks and bar snacks. The main bar is zoned within 2 half circle bar counter and a cylinder structure used for wine display.

LOUNGE AREA Right behind the bar area is a hidden corner for lounging. The cocktail lounge features seating area surrounded 2 suspended Gyrofocus fireplace. This 360 degree pivoting fireplace is made out of stainless steel and can be rotated to direct its heat to different parts of the room.

MAIN DINING The total dining area can hold up to 120 seated guests, divided into main dining, window dining, and private dining. The main dining is being zoned by wooden strips divider to provide semi privacy from the bar area. Seatings arrangement vary from 2 seaters, 4 seaters, to 6 seaters.

Window dining provides 2 seaters along the best lighting zone of the restaurant. 3 communals table that can hold up to 8 people each are best for larger parties. A small room at the corner of the restaurant is dedicated for private party of 12. This room is seperated from the entire restaurant with floor to ceiling glass walls that can be cover by window treatments for maximum privacy.

National Geographic Society has a rich history of 128 years old. Founded in 1888, it is one of the largest scientific and educational institutions in the world. It educates people about planet with various techniques such as documental television network, magazine, and interactive events.

Its iconic logo use the simple, timeless and elegant yellow portrait frame. They want people to see the world through their camera, so the yellow frame is the lens.

The NatGeo Community wishes to develop a mixed use building for their West Coast corporate headquarter in San Francisco.

Located at the Presidio, the area is known to actracts many tourists due to their rich cultural historical significance. The building will be open for public use in addition to having their offices.

CONCEPT

The concept of Restraint means to stay within the limit.

National Geographic Society has delivered extensive knowledge of natural science, geography, and archaeology into many different approaches. Much like their simple rectangular logo, the intention is very much restrained. Your job is to acknowledge their vision of making you think beyond the border, simplified the complexity while enhancing the simplicity.

The first floor of the building is dedicated for public use. There is an exhibition space for National Geographic related art works as well as small retail and coffee shop serving museum goers. A big open space that comes with a stage is available for event speech. This area can hold up to 40 seated guests and many standing guests.

The focal point of the first floor is the light filled atrium where a feature staircase is located. This stairs connects the first floor to second floor, which is dedicated for office area.

The atrium is the main transportation point of the building, serving as the vertical circulation of the two floors. The feature staircase is designed to have people interact with as a break area, whether museum goers or office employees. The simple, restraint design encourage people to take the stairs instead of elevator.

Continuing to the second floor is office spaces for National Geographic employees. The space planning is developed based on the restraint concept: simple and clear circulation as well as easy to follow zoning. The space allocation diagram below show how the entire space is being divided into public, semi-private, and private area respectively. The public indicates the atrium staircase, reception area, and conference rooms. Semi-private zones are open offices for editorial and design / production staffs. While private area are for the closed up private offices.

PROGRAM

Duboce Senior Living Community provides accomodation and activities for the 65+, both assisting and non assisting. On site amenities include health care, dining, gym, library, private and public functions. At Duboce Community, we revised the idea of senior housing and ought to deliver fresh experience while still feels like being home; encouraging growth even at older ages.

SITE ANALYSIS

25 SANCHEZ ST Duboce Senior Living Community is located at the corner of Duboce and Sanchez of the Lower Haight neighborhood of San Francisco city.

The area has a walk score of 97, bike score of 92, and transit score of 100.

Within walking distance are public parks, supermarkets, and main transportation line of the city. This is the prime location for a senior community due to its sustainable and convenience features.

RESIDENTIAL DESIGN Mariotto Residence

CONCEPT

Dandelion - A symbol of life, growth, and new beginnings. 3 main stages: the bright golden blossoming flower speaks positivity and joy; the white puffball symbolizes purity, healing, and a fresh start; the green stem represents nature and its sustainable aspect of a never ending life cycle.

The ability of the elongated flower stem to bloom as one and dry out, then reseeding as each individual give many opportunities for the space planning process. The beautiful dandelion flower needs full sun in order to sustain its life cycle, hinting at the sustainable features toward the space.

The Dandelion concept ties back to the program.

Duboce community will not just be a well accomodated housing, but also a place where the seniors can sustain in many positive ways that they haven’t experience before, encourage them to age gracefully in a sustainable facility.

Upon 250 making a table for the 600 program requirements. The first floor consisted of lobby, mail room, lounge area, communal dining area, as well as staff offices. The health care center is right behind the lobby to serve not only Duboce residents but also other visitors. Adjacent to the health care center are 14 assisted living units to ensure treatment for the one in need, as well as easy transportation for wheel chair users.

Amenities on the second floor include a community space, activity room, exercise room, multipurpose room that is also available for non-residence reservation, and a library that also comes with a coffee shop.

Two atriums that can look down to the below lounge area and lobby, have skylights to provide sunlight. Residential area on this floor includes 12 non assisted living units.

PUBLIC SPACE

LOBBY Duboce Community welcomes its residents with a warm and light filled lobby. The overall ambience after stepping into the building is positive, joyful, and encouraging, which ties back to the concept of the Dandelion flower. With a simple color palete, living plants are the main decorative elements throughout the space. A space filled with nature is the place to be.

The lobby has double ceiling height with banquet window seats on the second floor that can look down to the whole area. This serves as a break area for transitioning between the elevator hall, the gym room, and the non assisted living units upstairs.

LOUNGE AREA CIRCULATION

LOUNGE AREA The Lounge area serves as a community living room for the whole building. Residents are encouraged to spend time with their friends and family or chilling at the bar for a drink break.

Since this is the transition space between the dining room, the elevator hall, as well as the health care center, a lot of activities are expect to happen here. An atrium opening up to the second floor features a skylight, providing maximum sunlight and energy for the active space.

STUDIO UNIT Total Area: 433 sqft Studio units are universal design living space for assisted residency. Each unit is divided into 4 main parts: ADA bathroom; Resting zone with study and reading area; An entertainment system includes closet, media section, and mini kitchenette. A small balcony is designed for better room air quality. Materials used are sustainable wood laminate from TERRAMAI and Interface carpet tile flooring.

The design is ADA user friendly. Closet and cabinets has drawers on the lower section and use pull down rod for better reach. The kitchenette and media system are design like hospitality style to save up space.

ONE BEDROOM UNIT Total Area: 590 sqft One bedroom units are universal design ideal for couple or single residency that does not required assistant. Each unit includes a master bedroom with closet space and study area by the window.

Residents are welcome to have guests over. Hence full sized kitchen, dining, and living room are combined to a great room for maximum occupancy.

KITCHEN All one bedroom units are equipped with a full size kitchen.

These are ADA compatible with an L-shaped design for sink, stove, and fridge combo. Pull down racks for better reach are installed for the higher cabinets.

Attached to the cooking combo is a small dining area for two.

CRAB CREEK HOUSE

The house facade is made of various building materials ranging from concrete, field stone, to wood and metal siding, to glass walls and openings. The entire back view of the house look down to the swimming pool in the back yard. The house connect to its environment through its light filled living spaces and high multi ceilings. Interiors materials range from white marble, oak wood flooring, rusted steel and translucent glass.

SCULPTURE DESIGN Sketching for idea development to redesign a public sculpture. The location is the Patricia's Green Park in Hayes Valley of San Francisco.

The idea was to connect to the people at the park more by having a clock sculpture that can tells time.
