Mayborn Student Achievements Olivia McCarthy, a broadcast journalism student, participated in the Radio Show Scholars Program in Atlanta, a program sponsored by the NAB and RAB in 2015. She is the first Mayborn student to be selected for the national program. Advertising students Milan Murry, Adrian Beltran, Ashlea Ramirez, Luis Cano, Marisela De La Cuesta and Delletia Deflora participated in the Multicultural Talent Pipeline Program at the New York Times in New York City. Professor Sheri Broyles organized the trip and served as the chaperone. Amber Reece, a UNT broadcast/ digital journalism student, was one of 22 students from 16 universities across the nation selected for the 10-week News21 fellowship program at Arizona State University. The program’s topic was voter access and participation during this national election year. Fellows were paid $7,500 each plus up to $2,500 in travel expenses. Thanks to The Dallas Morning News for sponsoring this student. The Mayborn’s Fort Worth Star-Telegram paid internship program launched in January, thanks to Jim Witt, the editor. Graduate student Azia Branson and senior print/digital student Christian Boschult were selected as interns, with duties including breaking news, social media posting and video work. Tyler Cleveland placed eighth in the national Hearst Multimedia One/Features Competition.

Six NT Daily editors attended the Texas Intercollegiate Press Association meeting March 31-April 2 under the leadership of lecturer and adviser Gary Ghioto. Attendees included Nicholas Friedman, NT Daily editor-in-chief, plus Dalton LaFerney, Erica Wieting, Kristen Watson, Scott Sidway, Meagan Sullivan and Harrison Long. Chelsea Land, a Mayborn graduate student, worked during the summer 2016 as a video production intern for USA Today in the Washington, DC, metro area. Undergraduate Ashlea Ramirez earned a prestigious Multicultural Advertising Internship at VOX Global in New York City in 2016. Thanks to Dr. Sheri Broyles for nominating her. Ramirez was recognized as the "most promising multicultural student" by the American Advertising Federation. Jacqueline Sears and Keyona Butler’s PR case study on Toshiba was accepted in the UNT Scholars Day competition. Emily Goldstein and Jacqueline Fellows, both graduate students, attended the American Copy Editors Society Convention March 31-April 2 in Portland, Oregon, where they presented “Covering Mental Illness with Care.” Goldstein has worked as a copy editor with The Dallas Morning News and is a UNT teaching assistant. Fellows is a senior editor with Health Leaders Media and a UNT teaching assistant.
