This city was founded by the conquerors in 1540 and served as headquarters for the conquest of the rest of the peninsula. It is one of the few walled cities in America and due to the preservation of its historic downtown it is recognized as a World Heritage Site by UNESCO. Due to its privileged location in the Gulf of Mexico, it led to the commercialization of the palo de tinte (tint stick), monopolizing its production and commercialization, which led to the attack and looting by the most famous pirates of the seventeenth century. This forced the construction of a wall throughout the city to protect the people from constant looting. We will visit the main attractions of the city, its colonial houses, museums, the San Miguel Fort, the San José Fort, as well as the Cathedral, the Independence Square, San Carlos Bastion, Puerta de Tierra, San Román Church, etc. At the end of this part of the tour, we will drive along the coast until we arrive at Sabancuy, where we will take a detour to Palenque. Before we get there, we will make a stop to have something to eat. We continue our journey on Highway 180 towards our destination. Arrival to Palenque. Free afternoon and accomodation.

DAY 4 (THURSDAY): PALENQUE Breakfast at the hotel. Departure to Palenque archaeological site. Located in the heart of Chiapas rainforest, this is where one of the most powerful dynasties, known as the ancient kingdom of Lakam Ha, developed and dominated the mountains and plains around it. It reached its splendor between 600 - 750 AD, and rivaled other large capitals such as Calakmul, Tikal, Copán, Tonina, Piedras Negras, among others. The peculiar style of Palenque can be observed in its impressive grouped buildings, such as that of the Great Plaza, where different temples stand out: XII (Temple of the Skull) and XIII (Temple of the Red Queen), the latter named like this due to the discovery of a woman’s sarcophagus covered in cinnabar, and more than a thousand pieces of jade, malachite as well as other precious objects. The Temple of the Inscriptions, which was discovered in 1952 revealing a crypt abundantly decorated with wall paintings, containing a sarcophagus covered by a magnificently carved tombstone housing the body of King Pakal with its stunning jade mask. The most important architectural group, due to its size, is The Palace and we end with the Cross Group temples, among which we can find the temples of the Cross, Foliated Cross and the Sun. After being among wonderful temples and hieroglyphic inscriptions, we will continue this trip to one of the most beautiful natural sanctuaries in the area: Misol Ha. Nestled in the highland tropical rainforest of the mountain ranges of Chiapas, with a waterfall of approximately 82 feet high, this refreshing and beautiful landscape is undoubtedly one of the most beautiful spots in the area; this is one of the reasons why it was chosen as the setting for the movie “The Predator”, and also because of its harmonious combination of water and nature. Time for a good swim. Return to Santo Domingo de Palenque to spend the night there.

DAY 5 (FRIDAY): PALENQUE · BECAN Breakfast at the hotel and departure to Becan. During the journey we will make a stop at an amazing viewpoint over the Usumacinta River to appreciate its beautiful landscapes. After that, we will continue on our way to the town of Escarcega, where we will have a snack. Then we will head to the archaeological site of Becan, unique for having a natural ditch around its main buildings, therefore the name: BEH - CAN, which means snake road. With an architectural style known as Río Bec, this area possesses facades boasting a magnificent decoration in the form of a board, with large walls and high slender towers. At the end of our visit, we will head to a hotel, in the middle of the jungle, to rest and spend the night there. DAY 6 (SATURDAY): CALAKMUL · CHETUMAL Breakfast at the hotel. This day we will explore one of the most important capitals of the Mayan World. This place may be difficult to access but it does not diminish its greatness, and so we decided to reserve it for the end so you could enjoy it. From the entrance, on the federal highway, it will take us about two hours of a journey that will take us deep into the Mayan jungle. We will walk along paths adapted to this natural environment, until we reach the main entrance of the archaeological site. During this journey, we will be able to observe the flora and fauna of the highland rainforest in the wild: birds, reptiles and monkeys will be our companions all along the way. Both Calakmul Biosphere Reserve along with the archaeological site, of the same name, were listed by the UN as Natural Heritage of Humanity and Mixed Cultural Heritage of Mexico. Calakmul (The two adjacent hills) was the capital of the ancient kingdom of Caan, the most important settlement of the Classic period, as you will be able to witness in its more than 6 thousand structures, divided into architectural groups throughout its 13 thousand Km2. It is located in the heart of the rainforest of Peten, a short distance from the magnificent city of Tikal, with which they had bloody battles for control over the land. Its more than 400 stelae have provided a lot of political and religious information about the place; this has given us an idea of how magnificent this great city was and still is. At the end of our journey we will go to a quiet place to have a snack, before starting our way back. Later on, we will head to a small Mayan community where the locals will be waiting for us to taste typical dishes of the region, and spend time with them to learn a little about their traditions and customs. Perhaps, we will even be able to do some rural activities. Shuttle to Chetumal, capital of the state of Quintana Roo. Check-in at the hotel.

DAY 7 (SUNDAY): CHETUMAL - BACALAR – CANCUN After breakfast we will go to the Magical Town of Bacalar known for keeping one of the most beautiful natural treasures of the Yucatan Peninsula, the Laguna de los Siete Colores (The Lagoon of Seven Colors), which thanks to its different depths of the water and the sun rays, display its different shades of blue. In addition to visit the lagoon, sanctuary of stromatolites (prehistoric microorganisms precursors of life on the planet), we will also visit El Fuerte de San Felipe (San Felipe Fort), which houses the interesting Museo de la Guerra de Castas (Museum of the Caste War) and the incredible Cenote Azul, an open cenote where you will be able to swim and enjoy its crystal clear, refreshing waters. Later, we will stop for lunch, then head towards Tulum and, if time is on our side, have a small visit to the archaeological site there. At the end of our journey we will return to the city of Cancun.
