Foreword Davidson Contemporary is pleased to present Orbit, a one-man exhibition of new work by Kevin Osmond. Osmond’s work – drawings and sculpture – focuses on the microcosmic and macrocosmic differences and similarities in life and art. Hanging mobile sculptures resemble star systems, but also atoms; interstellar wormholes, but also invisble organisms; exploding stars, but also neurons. Wall sculptures feel massive and dizzying, but recall the fluid dynamics of water droplets, or unknown star maps. Osmond’s practice is comprised of many different genres and media, and ranges from everyday and even found material, to the more technical and man-made, including carbon fiber. The work is both freeform and highly structured, relying on a combination of controlled chaos and mathematics to create optic patterns and kinetic flux. There is as much focus on the unknowable depth of the universe as on the microscopic scientific wonders that take place within our own bodies. Osmond marries the two, with attention to detail on every scale, large or small. Kevin Osmond is the recipient of the Mark Tanner Sculpture Award, the Credit Suisse First Boston Sculpture Prize, and the Penguin Books Sculpture Prize. His work is in public and private collections around the world. Orbit is his third solo exhibition at Davidson Contemporary. Born in the UK, Osmond lives and works in Auckland, New Zealand.
