Fred Liberatore Fred is no stranger to anyone who has done the Challenge previously – he’s helped and guided literally thousands of people to dramatically change their physiques since the Challenge began. With a lifetime of experience in both bodybuilding and as a certified personal trainer and food coach, he’s probably forgotten more than most people know about training, nutrition and successful body transformation. As those that know him will testify, he’s a man that doesn’t take shortcuts and at times can be a hard taskmaster, but always has your best interests at heart. As a former Australian Masters bodybuilding champion with over 20 years experience in bodybuilding and many years competing, Fred certainly ‘walks the walk’. Fred is as passionate now as he ever has been about the Challenge and helping people meet their fitness goals. He returns this year to lead a brand new team of Challenge coaches in both the MAX’s Muscle-Up Challenge and Maxine’s Shape-Up Challenge.

Samantha Heron Samantha is a Maxine’s Burn Ambassador and after winning all three major International Federation Bodybuilding (IFBB) competitions this year (FitX, The All Female Classic & Australasia’s), Samantha knows a thing or two about how to get a body in great shape! She’s been a certified personal trainer for seven years and dedicates her life to not only living a healthy and active lifestyle, but also helping others achieve the same. Samantha will be on hand throughout the Shape-Up Challenge to help with your training programs and questions along the way to get you the very best result!

Kate Alderman As a certified personal trainer and competitive bodybuilder for many years, Kate has established herself as a leader in the fitness industry and has a passion for perfecting not only her own physique, but also inspiring others to be the best they can be. MASTER COACH

A bigger and better Challenge Master Coach Fred Liberatore offers his take on the inspiring journey that was the 2013 Maxine’s Challenge. BY FRED LIBERATORE // PHOTOGRAPHY CHARLIE SURIANO

T

he 2013 MAX’S MuscleUp Challenge officially started in July when registrations opened. But behind the scenes, the team at MAX’S were doing a lot of planning and preparation, whilst competitors also prepared for their impending 12 week journey. The 2013 Challenge was set to be the best yet, building on the success of last year’s event with more features and additional services, including a new female division. Bottom line, MAX’S wanted to improve on last year’s Challenge, to keep lifting the bar for entrants.

media and Muscle TV, in MAX’S Muscle News and by word of mouth. Our pre-registration numbers were phenomenal, so we could tell it was going to be the biggest year yet. The Challenge officially started on July 29, 2013. As a former Australian Masters Bodybuilding Champion with over 30 years experience in bodybuilding and many years competing, my passion is all about helping people meet their goals during the Challenge, and I was ably assisted by a team of Challenge Coaches and ambassadors who had competed last year.

UPPING THE STAKES

EMBRACING THE MASTER COACH ROLE

So how did we do it, you ask? Well, for one, we got a task team together and I was fortunate enough to head it up again as the official Master Coach. Engaging a full-time Challenge co-ordinator, Samantha Shaw, really helped with organising our systems and procedures and by all accounts there was lots of interest in the 2013 Challenge, from the industry, on social 6 // MMN // www.maxinesburn.com.au

My role as Master Coach varied from compiling weekly video blogs and training tips to answering questions and

posting up content on the forum, and making sure all the team were contributing to the Challenge. I also helped promote the Challenge and attended fitness trade shows. I did an instore ‘meet and greet’ with some of the Challengers in Adelaide, and when the Challenge finished I helped look after the Top 10 men and women during the finalists weekend in Melbourne, and emceed the Gala evening. One of the highlights for me this year was the opportunity to call the ‘blog of the week’ winners, throughout the 12 weeks. I loved hearing how excited they were over the phone, and it was a chance to deliver some good news and check in and see how they were going with their training and nutrition plans, and offer some advice. One of my other tasks was to report back to the Challenge co-ordinator each week and the

directors of MAX’S. I was never short of an inspiring story or tale from our competitors.

A QUALITY CHALLENGE

There are many differences that separate this Challenge from other body transformation competitions. One example is the real time replies competitors receive via the help and support section of the website, another is the level of experience and expertise Challengers have at their fingertips. I also like the fact there is a mix of ambassadors who are able to provide feedback based on their own experience in previous years. These ambassadors have walked in the competitor’s shoes, so to speak, and are a great resource for all Challengers. This year, we also added some cool features to the website including mobile upload and easy downloadable links for training and nutrition programs.

“One of the highlights for me was the opportunity to call the ‘blog of the week’ winners…I loved hearing how excited they were over the phone…”

MAGIC MOMENTS

Looking back on the highlights of the Challenge, one of the most inspiring things to hear is people’s stories of how they handled setbacks, and still conquered and completed the 12 weeks. Every year I look forward to calling the Top 10 and this year was no exception. When they answer the phone, most people think I’m having them on, but once they realise it’s really me, they’re gobsmacked! There are many great things about the Challenge but one of the most profound is that people use the experience as a catalyst for change – be it their job, lifestyle or fitness routine, they have chosen to be fitter, active and happier. When they started they were average and now they are extraordinary. The Gala evening was a great night, there was a magnetic energy in the room, and hearing about people’s stories and journey was a heart-warming experience. It was fantastic to catch up with Challengers from all over Australia. 8 // MMN // www.maxinesburn.com.au

LIVING YOUR TRUTH

This year’s Challenge certainly ticked all the boxes for entrants, and should give those thinking about entering in 2014 a little nudge along. If you’re undecided, remember that you are unique, with your own special beauty and value to give to life. Don’t hide behind your fears any longer - the Challenge will help you confront and overcome them. As a Master Coach I learnt a long time ago that when you worry you’re not good enough, you allow others to control you, and their domination will soon make you miserable. Or when you fool yourself into thinking you’re superior to everyone else, you deny yourself the exquisite joy of offering your own special gifts to life. It takes courage and faith, effort and initiative to be who you are. It is so worth the effort, and what better platform to enter the Challenge to conquer this. Make no mistake though, no one else can do it for you – you have what it takes to be successful at being you. We will of course help you along the way, but I believe every bit of

you is meant to be the authentic and original person you are. Listen to that quiet, persistent voice inside, the one that you know is right. This is your opportunity to fulfil and express the real and lasting joy of being you. We hope to see you in next year’s Challenge, which of course will be even bigger and better than ever.

SHAPE-UP CHALLENGE

1 Yolande Mitchell didn’t just set out to complete the Maxine’s Shape-Up Challenge and to get slim in the process – she had the fighting spirit of a winner inside which took her all the way to the top. STUDIO PHOTOGRAPHY CHARLIE SURIANO // WORKOUT PHOTOGRAPHY JOHN HANNA

olande Mitchell knew she was capable of giving and getting more out of life, but she wasn’t sure how to go about feeling fulfilled. Her image was getting her down, as she looked in the mirror and wasn’t happy with what she saw. She knew her poor lifestyle choices and being a busy wife and mother meant she wasn’t looking after herself. “I looked at the example I was setting for my children, about my self image and how far I had fallen, and the horror of what I would look like at 40,” she says. “I already looked awful with dark circles under my eyes and a puffy, fat lethargic body – it didn’t feel like my authentic self. I felt like an imposter that had ruined something that was once beautiful.” It was not just her external appearance that made Yolande unhappy, but how she felt inside. She had no energy and was getting run down and sick frequently.

“I felt like I was aging fast. I knew I could do so much better and was only fooling myself thinking I’d be fine if I continued on the way I was living.” It was time to take action, so she plunged into the Maxine’s Shape-Up Challenge with the desire to prove to herself that she “actually could” achieve a life overhaul. “I was slumped in front of the television flicking channels one afternoon, hungover on bad food and too much wine from the night before,” she says. “I jokingly said to my husband I was going to do it (the Challenge). It wasn’t until I went to the website that I really thought yes, I can do this, and I can do it well. Something clicked and I was on board 1001 per cent.” Yolande set out with the goal of returning to a healthy weight, or even achieving a slim physique.

EATING CLEAN

“I felt like if I was going to do it I’d do it well, it was basically a ‘now or never’, ‘do or die’ situation for me.” Yolande well and truly met her goal of returning to a healthy weight and slimming down during the Challenge.

In addition to enjoying Maxine’s Burn protein shakes and other products, Yolande realised she needed to overhaul her diet. She says she “ate clean” for the whole 12 weeks, stripping her diet right back to natural, non-packaged foods. Even little things like sauces on stir-fries were cut out. “I had lots of chicken and eggs, and I snacked on boiled eggs, nuts and protein shakes,” she says. “I would still roam the kitchen at 3pm looking for an afternoon snack, but I had to make sure it was a healthy snack. Even natural yoghurt with some psyllium was a good snack.” She used coconut oil on meats to help bring out the flavour but otherwise kept things “plain and simple”. At first it was difficult to be so disciplined, but she came to love this way of eating. “An important thing to say is that I never starved myself. If I was hungry I would have a snack, I just made sure it was healthy.” For those that struggle to resist food temptations, she says to keep at it as it gets easier. “Just be positive and remember it is not the end of the world.”

“I wanted to fit into the tiny clothes I’d kept, to get out of my fat clothes and to stop being embarrassed about who I’d become. “I was sick of hiding and wearing baggy clothes, I wanted to show off in my tiny, tight clothes again, like I had years prior.” Yolande’s initial goal may sound straightforward, but she had the fighting spirit of a winner inside. “I also wanted to win, because I felt like I really could give 1001 per cent. I felt like if I was going to do it I’d do it well, it was basically a ‘now or never’, ‘do or die’ situation for me.” In the first two weeks of the Challenge, Yolande didn’t know what had hit her. Sugar detoxes, food cravings, bad dreams and body aches left her saying, “What the hell was going on?” “It was an emotional time for me. I also got sick and was out for days in the beginning, I felt as though I had failed, or rather my body had failed me, but I kept my nutrition up throughout this time and it made me stronger.” Yolande got up every day between 4am and 5am to follow an active training routine in order to get the best results. It had to fit in with her duties as a mum and work hours. She did lots of cardio, as her main goal was to shift fat. Most days she added in a variety of exercises to keep things fun,

“I wanted to fit into the tiny clothes I’d kept, to get out my fat clothes and to stop being embarrassed about who I’d become.”

such as pump, body attack or aerobics classes at the gym and swimming sessions. “Every day was a new adventure and I wanted to do more and more. Being active is very addictive and I feel like I want to take on the world now,” she says. When the first signs of muscle development started to show, she says it was a “thrill like no other”. As a bonus, it also made her feel “very sexy”. To ensure her training was working, she took Maxine’s Burn vanilla and strawberry protein powders “religiously”. She liked Maxine’s Burn protein bars, with choc mint proving her favourite. “I honestly felt like I was cheating with every bar or cookie as they are so yummy. I actually developed a small problem with them and had to reassess and hide them because they were so good!” A trick she adopted was to mix the strawberry protein powder with psyllium husks to make it taste like a real berry shake with pips in it. www.maxinesburn.com.au // MMN // 17

“I got sick and was out for days in the beginning, I felt as though I had failed, or rather my body had failed me, but I kept my nutrition up throughout this time and it made me stronger.”

Yolande’s hard work in the gym has inspired her family and friends, including her husband who has quit smoking.

The results from all her efforts were remarkable, with Yolande dropping 14 kilograms over the 12 weeks of the Challenge. She is “ecstatic” with her transformation. “At the risk of sounding vain, I love all of me!” she says. However Yolande’s taste for success is still driving her, and she thinks she can achieve more with her physique. “I know I’m still capable of far, far more – watch this space. “I have reassessed my needs and wants in life, I feel strong enough to continue to strive for better and I want to chase goals and get out amongst it. The Challenge has changed every aspect of my life. I’m a proud woman in my health, fitness, lifestyle and choices. I now jump out of bed each day with a purpose and I’m a healthy happy, fit and muscular person.” 18 // MMN // www.maxinesburn.com.au

Yolande’s results have had an impact on those she loves, with her husband feeling inspired to quit smoking and coffee, and he has bought new sneakers to get set for exercise. Her colleagues at work are taking an active interest in their health and fitness, while friends are asking for top tips on how they can achieve a similar outcome. Even people Yolande doesn’t know are seeking advice. “Give it your all, live and breathe it and let it consume you, it will pay off in the end, and enjoy it. I did!” Yolande knows that next year’s competitors will be looking at her experience for inspiration and ideas. “If I can help another lady snap herself out of a bad lifestyle, then my job is done.” Yolande also swears by the unique support network offered during the Challenge. “Being plugged into the forum, Facebook and the Instagram community was a great help and support. Almost every bit of information you could need along the way was there. It’s almost foolproof so

There’s no shortage of energy and enthusiasm when Yolande hits the gym, as she showed during the Melbourne shoot.

that you can’t fail. If you’re even thinking about entering the Challenge, you’d be mad not to give it a go. I enjoyed it far too much, and it was over too soon!” The finals weekend in Melbourne proved a special event for Yolande, who enjoyed celebrating her achievement. She flew down from her home in Mackay, Queensland, and says she “had a ball”. “It was run really well, and all the staff were wonderful, generous and kind. I was made to feel very special indeed,” she says. 20 // MMN // www.maxinesburn.com.au

Despite training hard, eating right and being thrilled with her body overhaul, she really didn’t think that she would be declared the female winner for 2013. “Although the team from MAX’S gave nothing away, I thought I had it sussed and I wasn’t going to win. I was beyond happy when they announced that I was the Grand Champion.” She couldn’t have been more delighted to be proven wrong. “I loved every single second (of the Gala dinner), but like the Challenge it was over way too soon.”

SHAPE-UP CHALLENGE

2 A whole new level Personal trainer Julie McKay was used to maintaining her fitness but she ramped it up with the help of Maxine's Shape-Up Challenge. STUDIO PHOTOGRAPHY CHARLIE SURIANO // WORKOUT PHOTOGRAPHY JOHN HANNA

Julie adopted a 'never quit' attitude towards her training during the Challenge, the reward being a lean and toned physique.

A

s a personal trainer, Julie McKay was already good at setting fitness goals, but she needed to take her abilities to a new level. She wanted to be a role model for her clients, so she thought the Maxine’s Shape-Up Challenge would be the right path.

before

“I wanted to take a risk, with the chance of something great happening!” she says. She set herself some tough training routines and aimed to finish every session – overcoming her old trick of stopping when she felt tired. Julie also had to stop her

“emotional” snacking, which was getting in the way of results. Julie found some people were unsupportive of her decision to enter the Challenge, whilst others were full of encouragement. “It was hard making sacrifices for the time involved. Juggling the Challenge around life, or actually in my case it was juggling life around the Challenge,” she says. With two children under four years old, plus work and study, it was not easy, but missing training was not an option. Julie loved Maxine’s Burn Protein Powder in both vanilla and chocolate, and found porridge was just the thing to blend it with. “I would say cookies and cream would be up there with my favourite flavour in the Burn Bars, but they are all delicious!”

Julie had to reassess her priorities during the Challenge but always found time to squeeze in a gym session.

TOP ADVICE

As a personal trainer, Julie is now bringing even more motivation to sessions with her clients as a result of what she learnt on the Challenge. She says if anyone is keen to take part in 2014, they should go for it – but be prepared to put in the hard yards. “The Challenge is definitely no walk in the park,” she says. “Having said that, I wouldn’t change a thing about what I did as I have become a stronger person, not just physically but mentally. “Be prepared for what you are about to take on and make sure your friends and family are aware of what is involved. Having support makes a world of difference. Enjoy the ride!”

“It has not only been a physical change but my mind is strong, focused and ready for anything!”

With a new body and mindset, Julie's happiness is shining from the inside out.

28 // MMN // www.maxinesburn.com.au

“It was the most incredible feeling to be constantly rewarded for doing something that only made my life better. I was completely stunned.” At just halfway though the Challenge, Julie was seeing results. At the end she weighed under 60kgs and lost 46cms in measurements. “My training has progressed in a huge way and I am training harder than I ever have before. I gave up my excuses and I gave up giving up,” she says.

And her clients will see a change too – with Julie bringing new ideas, motivation and commitment into her work. “It has not only been a physical change but my mind is strong, focused and ready for anything!”

JULIE’S FAVOURITE RECIPES

Throughout the Challenge, Julie dramatically improved her nutrition and used Maxine’s products to supplement her efforts. Here are some of her go-to snacks.

GREEN PANCAKES

1⁄₃ cup oats 1 whole egg 2 egg whites Handful of baby spinach leaves Stevia to taste 1 tbsp coconut oil Maxine’s Burn protein powder in your favourite flavour ½ cup of almond milk Put the oats, egg, egg whites, spinach leaves and Stevia in a bowl and blend with a stick blender. Melt a little coconut oil in a pan, and pour pancake-size batches of mixture into the pan. Cook pancakes until golden and set aside. In a bowl, mix a serve of Maxine’s Burn protein powder with enough almond milk to make it a thick and smooth consistency, and drizzle over the top of the pancakes.

PROTEIN SORBET

½ to 1 cup frozen berries 1 scoop Maxine’s Burn protein powder A splash of almond milk Put all the ingredients into a bowl, blend with a stick blender until smooth, and serve.

TIME TO CELEBRATE

When Julie received the call to say she had made the Top 10 of the Challenge, she had a moment where she thought it could be her husband on the phone cracking a joke. It of course wasn’t the case, and she confesses that she burst into tears! “That moment, that feeling, is something I will never forget,” she says. “The whole week was a blur as I organised myself for the trip to Melbourne for the Gala.” Upon arrival at her hotel in Melbourne, she was thrilled to receive a Maxine’s gift bag, and she loved meeting the other finalists, ambassadors and coaches that evening. “The next day was a filmed interview, training and a photo shoot. I enjoyed every minute of it, the Maxine's crew really made us feel like celebrities! “To top off the weekend was the Gala, it was great to see some of the faces from the social pages and to meet the ones I had connected with through the Challenge. “ On stage, the moment she realised she was in the Top three was one she will “never forget”. Julie was already proud she had completed the Challenge with a set of sculpted abs to show for it – “way more than I expected from the Challenge!”, she says. “It was the most incredible feeling to be constantly rewarded for doing something that only made my life better. I was completely stunned. “They called me out in second place and it still feels like a dream. I received a $1000 shopping spree and am now a Maxine’s sponsored athlete with dreams to chase and the confidence to do it!”

SHAPE-UP CHALLENGE

3 Stepping up for health Brenda Austin didn’t let health conditions get in her way during the Challenge – in fact, they proved her motivation towards success. STUDIO PHOTOGRAPHY CHARLIE SURIANO // WORKOUT PHOTOGRAPHY JOHN HANNA

I

t was not just a physical challenge, but a mental one that Brenda Austin was keen to take on when she signed up for Maxine’s ShapeUp Challenge. “I felt like I was at the end of the line, and this was my last chance to bring my health back into order. The Maxine’s ShapeUp Challenge was the perfect opportunity at the perfect time,” she says. Brenda, who has five grandchildren, opted for an “all or nothing” approach. “My motivation came from a strong desire to be around for my grandchildren, and a necessity of improving my health before it was too late.” As well as toning up and feeling positive, she wanted to see an improvement in her general health, which was marred by arthritis and an underactive thyroid.

Brenda has suffered from health isssues, but the Challenge was the perfect opportunity to reclaim her health and wellness.

“For me the hardest stage was at the beginning before the Challenge had really made a big impact on my symptoms,” she says. “There were days when it was near impossible to make it out of the house because of them, and also battling with low energy levels. Sometimes it was difficult to push through, but the more I stuck to it, the easier it became.”

“It is an unbelievable group of strong women who not only shared their progress, tips, training and recipes, but also their ups and downs.”

SOCIAL MEDIA SUPPORT

Brenda may have been determined to succeed, but she knew she would need support to get through the tougher times in the Challenge. One avenue where she found great encouragement was via social networking site Facebook, where she joined a group of likeminded Challengers. “The Facebook group that I joined was called Maxine’s Burn Shape-Up Challenge 2013,” she says. “It is an unbelievable group of strong women who not only shared their progress, tips, training and recipes, but also their ups and downs.” She says there was always a competitor willing to listen, offer encouragement and motivation, even in times of grief. They were also there in the good times to celebrate her success. “Some thought the Facebook page would fade after the Challenge, but such a bond has been created that it is still as strong as ever, and it has attracted many new ladies that have been inspired to travel the same path, with all the support and shared information. “It’s a page that now has over 600 members, that are now knowledgeable and experienced with all the MAX’S and Maxine’s products, training and the diet.”

34 // MMN // www.maxinesburn.com.au

“At 66 I’m feeling better than I did in my 30s. I’m so happy with my transformation… it’s the beginning of a new way of life.”

A diet overhaul and training plan were key to her success, and she was supported by a personal trainer Gerard Lewis. Maxine’s protein bars, cookies and shakes were part of her daily routine. “I often make a Maxine’s pancake for breakfast…I particularly enjoy it topped with fresh berries and Greek yoghurt.” Brenda can’t speak highly enough of the experience. “At 66 I’m feeling better than I did in my 30s. I’m so happy with my transformation, this isn’t the end of the 12 Week Challenge for me, it’s the beginning of a new way of life.”

THRILLING PRIVILEGE

Brenda was surprised and humbled to wind up in the Top 10, and admits “it was almost like being a celebrity”. “Flights were booked, the accommodation was fantastic, and we were greeted in Melbourne by the lovely Samantha (Shaw) and then transported to our hotel,” she says. “It was a pleasure meeting Master Coach Fred, all the MAX’S and Maxine’s team as well as the other Challengers at the meet and greet, where everyone made us feel very welcome.” Brenda was put through her paces in the gym by trainer Kate, and soon got used to having her every move during the session captured on video. Next up was the true celebrity moment, at the photo shoot. “Everyone made it so easy, especially Charlie (photographer) who compensated for my constant blinking, and John who advised on posing. There are so many people to thank for putting us at ease. I had no need for all the nerves that I was experiencing beforehand. This is something I will be able to look back on and treasure, as I was made to feel amazing.” Brenda recalls that the Gala night was “spectacular” and revelled in meeting all of the competitors. “It was thrilling and a privilege to have been selected in the Top 50 amongst so many awe-inspiring women. To then have been placed amongst the Top 10 was just amazing, to then reach the Top three was unbelievable. “I have many fantastic memories to look back on and an experience I will never forget. I hope my children and grandchildren will be proud of their mother and nana.”

Mind over matter When the mental battle got tough, Bethanie Doyle pushed through and is now embracing the results. STUDIO PHOTOGRAPHY CHARLIE SURIANO // WORKOUT PHOTOGRAPHY JOHN HANNA

ethanie Doyle is upfront about why she took on the Maxine’s Shape‑Up Challenge. “I was fast becoming a very overweight, lethargic and unmotivated person who was a bad influence on my children and everyone around me,” she says. “I was watching TV when MAX’S Muscle TV came on and the first thing I saw was the Challenge. It was due to start in five or six weeks and I thought, ‘why not. I can do this’.” Bethanie set out with the objective to change how she viewed food, and also to lose weight while creating a new body shape. However, the journey wasn’t smooth. In week four she didn’t see as much change in her body as she had hoped – but didn’t let it stop her motivation. “I found that this was when the real mental battle started.

Psychology plays a huge part in every facet of our lives.” The Challenge was her first foray into weight training, so she started with a simple program. She complemented training with Maxine’s Protein Powder and Maxine’s Bars. “I loved the choc mint Maxine’s Burn Bars. They tasted great and were always so convenient.” At the end of the 12 weeks, Bethanie was very happy with her body transformation, especially given the short space of time. She is proud of herself and so are her children and friends. “I am now a fit and healthy person who has changed the way I think about myself, food, exercise and my entire life. I have come to the conclusion that I can do anything in life if I put my mind to it.” Bethanie loved the experience of being a finalist in Melbourne. “Well done to everyone, we were all winners no matter what the result.”

She turned to the Maxine’s Shape-Up Challenge, thinking that as it started in July, it was the perfect solution. “I entered the competition for guidance on the correct way to train and eat and to challenge myself,” she says. Overcoming fear of embarrassment in the gym was tricky, as was battling all the excuses of why she shouldn’t do it. “I soon realised that everyone around me expected me to give up and fail – they thought it would be too hard for me,” she says. “I also thought there was a high risk of injuring myself. Eventually my desire for success was greater than my fear of failure and I threw myself at it.”

Cherelyn led a fairly sedentary life until she entered the Challenge. Now she’s got the gym bug, and a body to match.

“I wake up before the alarm now with enthusiasm each morning eager to get to the gym, and I chase the burn, I don’t hide from it.” Instead she learnt how to manage her diet, and started to enjoy weight training. She was leading a sedentary life and found that she was becoming weaker, so revelled in regaining strength. “I viewed my training as physiotherapy, slowly building each muscle group and being patient as I grew stronger. I could work at my own pace and bit by bit my stamina and fitness improved. I had difficulty doing any sort of abdominal exercises to start with until I discovered the Cable Crunch. These were demonstrated in last years MAX’S magazine, and they allowed me to build core 44 // MMN // www.maxinesburn.com.au

strength without hurting my neck, back or pelvic floor.” Nutrition, too, played an important role in Cherelyn’s journey. “I found the Maxine’s Bars a lifesaver sometimes when I was caught unprepared or felt like a treat – the Caramel Crunch is my favourite.” Cherelyn is “very happy” with her transformation, and she has exceeded her own expectations. She has dropped from a size 12 to a size eight, and has built a strong core and can cope with advanced exercises. “I wake up before the alarm now with enthusiasm each morning eager to get to the gym, and I chase the burn, I don’t hide from it,” she says.

Taste of success Katie Nilan’s fitness had been up and down over the years, but the Maxine’s Shape-Up Challenge showed it was her food choices that were holding her back. STUDIO PHOTOGRAPHY CHARLIE SURIANO // WORKOUT PHOTOGRAPHY JOHN HANNA

fter a European holiday, Katie Nilan realised she had fallen into the trap of indulging too much in the good life. None of her work clothes fit, and she embarked on a yo-yo journey of weight loss and gain, not helped by increasingly long days sitting at a desk. Katie avoided looking in the mirror, but one day she saw a picture of herself looking very out of shape, and thought “OMG”!

before

She had to do something to get her health back on track and decided that the Maxine’s Shape-Up Challenge was the ticket. Katie started with the goal of losing a few kilograms and gaining a happier outlook. Her joints were objecting to long runs, so the idea of a weight training program and diet overhaul appealed. The first three weeks proved tough, with her body fighting the new regime.

When Katie got fed up with avoiding mirrors, she entered the Challenge and made serious changes to her life, and body.

“I realised also how much my ritual of regular drinks, unhealthy food choices and late nights impacted on my quality of life, health and recovery. I abstained from alcohol for the length of the Challenge, and have never felt better. “I no longer have to waste my weekend mornings resting a sore head. I can now take full advantage of the beautiful weekends on the Northern Beaches in Sydney – wearing a bikini too!” The constantly changing exercise program meant that her body was regularly “shocked” into responding. Katie also learned that food choices had long been her downfall. “For this self confessed foodie ‘you are what you eat’ was a difficult motto to swallow.” She is “over the moon” with her transformation and health is high on her priority list. “I now live by the mantra that ‘failing to prepare is preparing to fail’.”

icole Ball didn’t have an issue with going to the gym, but she always favoured cardio sessions over weight training and wasn’t seeing results. Her diet was also poor, and even though she was never big, she wasn’t feeling in top shape. Nicole’s boyfriend’s mum had heard of the Challenge, and suggested she give it a try. “My main objective prior to the Challenge was to see how it feels to cut my ‘second boyfriend’ out of my life – chocolate!” she says. “My biggest weaknesses are chocolate, Nutella, Milo and ice-cream, and boy was I proud when I finished the 12 weeks without the tiniest taste of those foods!”

before

Submitting a ‘before’ photo was a big challenge for Nicole, as she felt “extremely vulnerable standing there with my belly out in very little clothing for the world to see”. Replacing her usual breakfast of Weetbix with oats and Maxine’s Protein Powder was an effort, as she initially hated oats. “Glad to admit I have a newfound favourite for breakfast!” Around weeks eight to 10 of the challenge, her work hours were long, so fitting in training got hard. “It was making my days feel really long and I was getting exhausted but I knew once I dragged my butt to the gym, my mood would lift and so would I,” she says.

after

A serious weight training program gave shape and tone to Nicole’s body during the Challenge, and it’s a program she intends to stick with.

“My main objective prior to the Challenge was to see how it feels to cut my ‘second boyfriend’ out of my life – chocolate!”

Her training regime shifted from cardio to doing a different weights program each night. At the end of the Challenge, she couldn’t believe the comparison with her “before” shots. “It was only then that I realised how much I had changed, my confidence lifted and I felt much better about myself. It made me want to keep up with what I was doing as I didn’t want to become the person in that ‘before photo’ again.” 52 // MMN // www.maxinesburn.com.au

fter losing a small amount of weight, Sheree Pallis thought Maxine’s Shape-Up Challenge would be the ticket to take her to the next level. “I needed help with nutrition which has always been my downfall in the past, and needed to be accountable to something so I’d stick it out to the end,” she says.

“You will be surprised how much you can really fit into your life once you decide you want change.”

Sheree thanks her husband’s interest in MAX’S Muscle TV for the fact she spied an advertisement for the Challenge. It wasn’t just about weight loss though – she wanted a “happier and healthier me”. “I found myself obsessing about my weight on a daily basis and I really didn’t want that negativity rubbing off on my children. I wanted to be the best role model for them.” With three children, finding time to exercise and prepare meals was a challenge, as was giving up her nightly treat of a glass of wine with dinner. Thankfully, she found other things to enjoy.

Sheree had to change her longterm habits, like a glass of wine with dinner, during the Challenge but the results made it all worthwhile.

“Not only did it change my life, it’s changed the next generation’s.” “I used Maxine’s Burn Protein Powder during the whole duration of the Challenge, which I thought was so delicious. I used the chocolate flavour on top of my oats each morning, and still to this day it is my favourite breakfast! I just love it.” Sheree could not be happier with her body transformation. She watched the number on the scales go down, and when the before and after photos were placed together she thought “wow”. In the 12 weeks she gained confidence and a cando mindset. “Not only did it change my life, it’s changed the next generation’s,” she says. “I made excuses – I have three kids, I’m busy, I work, I have a house to run, I’m tired!” she says. “You will be surprised how much you can really fit into your life once you decide you want change.” 56 // MMN // www.maxinesburn.com.au

t was Sky Carden’s husband who signed her up for the Maxine’s Shape-Up Challenge. He had faith she could do it – she just needed some encouragement. As a fan of MAX’S Muscle TV, he thought it would be a great journey they could take together, so Sky jumped at the chance to reclaim her happiness after gaining weight during two pregnancies. “Sure, I recently had a baby but I had not looked after myself, not ate right, not exercised and really didn’t care about my image,” she says. “Going into the Challenge my goal was to reach under 70kgs – that would be the smallest I have been since high school. Most importantly I wanted to be happy and set an example for my children, changing our family’s lifestyle for good.” Initially it was tough, but seeing results spurred her on. Sky fixed her eating patterns by planning meals in advance. It was hard to turn down tempting

She also found it hard to say “no” to tempting foods at social events. “As a mum, it’s easy to finish off the kids’ dinners and snacks,” she says. “Although it did become easier as the Challenge went on, I still find it difficult to let perfectly good (and yummy!) food go to waste. TRAINING COACH

Inspiring change In her first year as Maxine’s Shape-Up Training Coach, Samantha Heron couldn’t help but be captivated by the Challenger’s stories. Here, she shares her 12 week experience. BY SAMANTHA HERON

W

hat an honour it was to be involved in the first year of the Maxine’s Challenge as the Shape-Up Training Coach. When accepting the offer I wasn’t quite sure what I was in for, but it didn’t matter – this opportunity was one I could not miss. The concept of an onlinebased Challenge was new for me, and it took a bit of time to get my head around not being able to physically see or speak to people in person. But I was amazed that after such a short period of time, it really did feel like I knew the Challengers on a much closer level. I was so intrigued by all the Challengers and their journeys, I would find myself sitting at the computer for hours just reading through their blogs and checking their progress, training and meal prep pictures. I was literally watching people’s lives change in front of my eyes! The MAX’S & Maxine’s Challenge forum was complete with information on everything from nutrition, training, motivation and mindset, to general chatter. It’s proven to be an outstanding online support system with articles and photos to keep everyone on track, and

70 // MMN // www.maxinesburn.com.au

it provided a space to answer any questions or queries. This support network, combined with trainers, coaches, ambassadors and all the Challengers, is key to what makes the Challenge such a success. The forum was a huge tool that helped Challengers through tough times, and it was there when they wanted to try something new, or had to push themselves to a limit they never thought possible. The training and meal plan programs we provided were updated every four weeks so the Challengers never hit a plateau, and continued getting results. The number of transformations made was absolutely amazing, and being asked to put forward opinions for the Top 50 men and women was a challenge in

to know a bit more about their stories, how and why they started the Challenge. But being able to individually train a lot of the male and female Top 10 contenders at Doherty’s gym for the Muscle TV DVD was icing on the cake. As was helping out with their professional photos. Saturday night at the Gala dinner was wonderful, seeing everybody all dressed up and looking stunning. But the biggest thing that stood out in the days I spent with them was the confidence that shone through each and every Challenger. They way they walked, talked and held themselves truly showed that confidence and sense of accomplishment each of them carried. To me, that is the biggest and best prize they could have won.

For anyone wanting to transform their body after seeing these amazing results, you’d be crazy not to give it a go. itself. When the day came to finally meet and greet the Top 10 Challengers in Melbourne, seeing and speaking to them in real life was even more of a shock, and more inspiring than what I had seen and read online. It was a pleasure getting

As much as each and every one of the Top 10 had come so far and made massive improvements and total transformations, the female winner Yolande and male winner Glenn were well deserving of their wins.

NUTRITION COACH

Inspiring by example Maxine’s Shape-Up Challenge Nutrition Coach, Kate Alderman, reflects on her own 12 week journey, as well as that of her fellow Challengers. BY KATE ALDERMAN // PHOTOGRAPHY JOHN HANNA

T

he 2013 MAX’S and Maxine’s Challenge was a very fulfilling journey charged and primed with inspiration. My world was filled with motivated people on a mission to achieve something great. Wherever I was, in the gym, delivering seminars, working at Australian Muscle, shopping at the supermarket, or spending time with friends and family, people would engage in conversation about the Challenge. Those doing the Challenge would ask questions to get clearer on their plan and those not doing the Challenge were often left inspired and motivated and I got the sense they felt like they were missing out on something. The Challenge forum, Facebook and my inbox were consistently filled with inquiries regarding nutrition, training, mindset and motivation. It was so very rewarding to be able to empower others in what they were dealing with. This really inspired me in my own Challenge. I decided to do the Challenge as a supportive mentor and coach, with the aim of inspiring health and wellbeing in others and to update my profile and website. As the Challenge progressed I continued to upload weekly progress photos to motivate and inspire others.

72 // MMN // www.maxinesburn.com.au

I received many messages from Challengers saying they had been inspired and lit up by my progress, which further inspired me. This kept me on my game and allowed me to produce a result far greater than I had ever imagined. Many in the bodybuilding community were asking if I was going to compete again. My last figure competition was in 2009 and I hadn’t planned on it – I wanted time to focus on helping other people. I had been training and eating for performance,

“Show me a few poses, let me see what you’ve got,” Justin said. So I decided why not and popped a few poses, feeling as rusty as ever. I turned around for a back double biceps before Justin pointed at my butt and piped up, “Holy sh*t is that real? What exercises have you been doing for your glutes? I want a butt like that!” I realised he was serious and was flattered by the compliment. My glutes were one of main areas that needed attention back in 2009 so I had been working hard on

Equipped with knowledge and a creative mind we can re-create flavours and develop delicious meals without getting off-track with our physique goals. recovery and to maintain a lean, healthy, and femininely muscular physique, but I certainly hadn’t been eating for growth and size. I was working in store at Australian Muscle, Holden Hill, and was chatting to my coworker Justin Eming. He asked if I was going to compete again. My response was, “I’m not sure, I don’t think I’m muscular enough for the Figure category and Fitness/Sports Model is just not me.”

their development ever since. Some might call it an obsession. “You’ve got nothing to lose,” Justin told me, followed by, “you’ve already achieved your goal of inspiring others, you could do this even further by stepping on stage again.” I was filled with excitement when Justin offered to assist with my nutrition plan. His belief in me and what he thought was possible had me leave the store feeling empowered – I was already

It was so very rewarding to be able to empower others in what they were dealing with. giving it my all but I knew I could achieve more with some valuable coaching. So the value of a coach was highlighted again for me – even nutrition coaches need a nutrition coach. In the heat of competition a coach is extremely valuable. When we have a coach to call the shots and make decisions we feel empowered and free and can focus on the task at hand (eating, training, recovery, etc). A shift in thinking took place over the 12 weeks for many people doing the Challenge. The subject of nutrition has been quite a scary one for many Challengers and this became

Above: Kate assists Shape-Up Challenger Nicole Ball with her workout during the finalist’s weekend in Melbourne.

more evident as the forum opened up. Many became aware of how much and the volume they can actually eat when they fuel their body only with the nutrients it needs. Many Challengers, especially women, gave up their fear of protein and supplements and began to realise and see the benefits of using the MAX’S and Maxine’s Burn range of products. Getting creative in the kitchen with clean foods has been a passion of mine for many years. I was truly inspired by some of the recipes that were shared throughout the Challenge. Equipped with knowledge and a creative mind we can re-create flavours and develop delicious meals without getting off-track with our physique goals. From start to finish there was a thirst for information as Challengers took their knowledge to a higher level. From the newbie to the advanced, Challengers stepped it up over and over again looking for the next level of accomplishment.

Whilst doing the Challenge there were many competitors doing Tough Mudder, mud runs, marathons, Ironman races and short-format triathlons. Many of these had no idea how to fuel their body for performance during the event and many were scared it would interfere with their results. Being able to assist these people was truly rewarding. I continue to receive expressions of interest from Challengers looking to compete in the future. Many found something within and are now seeking to take their achievements a step further. Overall, my involvement in the Challenge was very rewarding. It enabled me to inspire health and wellbeing in a wide range of people, plus I achieved something great for myself, placing second in the ANB Open Figure State Titles and third in the WNBF Ms Fit Body National Titles. Thank you Team MAX’S and thank you all Challengers. 2014 is going to be even more exciting! www.maxinesburn.com.au // MMN // 73
