LEADER

Welcome to the Brand & Lifestyle Licensing Awards 2017. The power of brands continues unabated and the evolution of brand and lifestyle licensing is very much part of this. The inaugural B&LLAs last year were embraced by the whole licensing community, recognising that accolades that rewarded excellence in this dynamic area was long overdue.

year on and the finalists of this year’s B&LLAs stand as testament to the verve and innovation that is so evident in the brand licensing arena. Brand owners from all strata – be it heritage, food, FMCG, talent, automotive, fashion, design – are represented in this room today. And on the licensee front, brand licensing has without doubt widened the circle of business. Companies who have never before considered licensing have now totally changed their tune to become brand licensing champions while there are many others who, having been active in the entertainment side of the industry, are now relishing the opportunities that tapping into recognisable marques brings. The key of course is retail without whom these great brand licensing collaborations would never reach the end consumer.

From high street fashion names, the big four grocers, department stores, e-commerce giants and myriad of specialist players have all been involved in ensuring today’s awards really do reward the best in class.

And what better an environment to celebrate these achievements than at a venue whose five star brand values epitomise today’s stunning line-up of finalists. There are too many people to thank by name, but without the support of our sponsors, industry friends and the ‘engine room’ at Max Publishing, The B&LLAs 2017 would not be where they are today. We hope you have a lovely afternoon.

THE BIG BUILD UP

THE ESSENTIAL INGREDIENTS The B&LLAs got off to a fabulous start last year with the brand licensing community, retailers and dedicated suppliers all pledging their wholehearted support to the launch of this significant awards programme. So, here we are, at the second B&LLAs and thanks to the input and involvement of so many, the bar has been raised even higher. Here we share some of the extra ingredients that have gone into making The B&LLAs 2017 so special.

Above: The B&LLAs trophy has been designed and created in the UK specifically for the awards. Below: LEON co-founder John Vincent, the pre-awards speaker will share insights of the journey to create the ‘naturally fast food’ and how licensing is playing a part in its growth. Right: Rory Bremner, host of The B&LLAs 2017. Below right: Alan Dedicoat, the ‘Voice of The B&LLAs’.

THE IMPRESSIVE CAST While the B&LLAs’ spotlight is shining directly on the finalists and winners of these awards, the awards event also draws on the expertise of a wealth of talented individuals to help ensure that the whole afternoon is truly memorable. John Vincent, co-founder and ceo of LEON – the trailblazing ‘naturally fast food chain’ – will share his inspiring story of building this rapidly growing brand, providing ‘food for thought’ before lunch is served. Host of the awards ceremony is Rory Bremner, the comedian and impressionist whose accurate mimicry and sharp satire

04 BRAND & LIFESTYLE LICENSING AWARDS 2017

have earned him the acclaim of pundits and the fury of politicians. “With the current political scene providing such a rich source of material, Rory is in his element. It is great that this man of many voices is able to join us today at the B&LLAs, halfway through his sell out tour,” commented Ian Hyder, joint managing director of Max Publishing, which owns The B&LLAs. And someone else who has a memorable voice is Alan Dedicoat, aka the ‘Voice of the Balls’ on the National Lottery programmes on BBC One. Today he has tuned his vocal chords as the live voiceover for the B&LLAs!

INVITATION TO A TREAT

Above: Illustrator Heather Flynn whose creative versatility knows no bounds. Right: The tactile and the graphical combine in this year’s B&LLAs ticket.

In keeping with the prestige of the B&LLAs and The Dorchester Hotel where we are right now, the official tickets are super stylish. Leading British illustrator Heather Flynn (whose many claims to fame include being the creator of the Alice Scott brand as well as co-creator of Happy Jackson) undertook the task of creating The B&LLAs’ invitation for the second year in succession. Heather embraced the open brief to create an official ticket that would form a special keepsake element of the awards. Keen to ensure that the tactility of the invitation was matched by unexpected finishes, Heather selected a chic grey board for the outer, a heavyweight thick cotton paper stock for the insert that she felt would be beautifully enhanced with holographic foiling. It was a trip back to her Scottish homeland that prompted the distinctive graphical treatment. “I was so inspired by the intersecting lines of wire on the new Forth Road Bridge, which in turn made me think of the Brooklyn Bridge that sparked the idea for the patterning on the invitation. I felt it all chimed with the architectural tones of the grey, raw fibre boards and the light-catching holo foil.” Top end paper company, GF Smith has supplied all the board, the maestros at Pigment have facilitated on the production front and award winning printers Windles undertook the printing and finishing. THE ENTRY AND JUDGING PROCESS The entry process for all the B&LLA categories - product, property, retailing and brand ambassador awards - was undertaken completely online through a dedicated site. The site was created (by Bionic Communications) not only to be easy to navigate, but also to make it as simple as possible for entrants to upload imagery and information. Entering The B&LLAs was free of charge for all. Distinct judging panels were formed to undertake the judging of the different categories. Each judge individually considered the online submissions. For example, key retailer buyers judged the product categories, while licensors and brand owners as well as licensees formed the judging panel for the retailer categories.

Left: Hildon has raised staggering amounts for Help for Heroes. Below: Hearst UK, as menu sponsor provided the Country Living cook book that carries the menu card for today.

TABLE TALK The Dorchester is renowned not only for its sumptuous surroundings, but also the quality of its cuisine. The menu for The B&LLAs was selected by its head chef with discerning brand licensing folk in mind! And when you get home you can get creative in the kitchen too, trying out some of the delicious recipes in the Country

Living cookbook from Hearst UK, sponsor of today’s menu. Water, they say is the food of life, and today it will be free flowing with good cause. As part of its commitment to charity, The Dorchester Hotel has allowed Hildon to donate bottles of its still and sparkling water that raises money for Help for Heroes, on every table. Just when you thought it couldn’t get any better your tastebuds will be sent on a journey of utter joy with Monty Bojangles’ ‘curiously moreish, intriguingly shaped’, cocoa dusted truffles.

THE GIFT OF GIVING Something completely different for this year’s B&LLAs is that all guests will receive a gift, beautifully wrapped in bespoke material created by those talented folk at Ulster Weavers. Everyone on each table will unwrap a different gift, ranging from watches and jewellery to specially created fragrances and luggage. Among those who have risen to the challenge of generously donating these gifts are Beanstalk, Blueprint Collections, CAA-GBG, Corsair Lifestyle, CPLG, HEAD, Joules, RHS, Start Licensing, Tokidoki and TSBA. And, to make it easier to carry your gift and all the other keepsakes home, Penny Kennedy has kindly provided some large giftbags. Above: Irish linen producers, Ulster Weavers produced the bespoke ‘wrapping’ for the table gifts.

Above: The homepage of the website that was created for The B&LLAs by Bionic Communications to accommodate an online entering process.

As Andrew Newlands, managing director of Honeycomb Project Management (of which Monty Bojangles is its craft brand), associate sponsor of the B&LLAs commented: We see The B&LLAs as the influential nexus of product inspiration, quality recognition and licensing networking. We are certain the awards will grow greater each year – this is a ride we want to be a part of! Right: Andrew Newlands, md of family business Honeycomb Project Management.

SPREADING THE WORD Playing a pivotal role in helping to spread the word about The B&LLAs has been PR partners Kilogrammedia (headed up by the one and only Jane Garner). In addition to Max Publishing’s own media channels (notably the daily e-newsletter LicensingSource.net and Licensing Source Book), The B&LLAs official media partner is Total Brand Licensing.

SPONSORS SPEAK OUT

CHAMPIONING BRANDS The Brand & Lifestyle Licensing Awards shine the spotlight on the achievements right across the brand licensing arena. Sharing the vision for these important awards many leading names in the industry have come on board as sponsors of the event. Here they share their views.

HEADLINE SPONSOR

Above: Anna Knight, brand director of BLE.

ANNA KNIGHT, BRAND DIRECTOR, BRAND LICENSING EUROPE:

A Head For Brands As reflected by the growing number of leading brand names that will be fanfared at Brand Licensing Europe exhibition, organiser UBM had no hesitation in continuing as headline sponsor of The B&LLAs 2017. It is also the sponsor of the Best Licensed Heritage Or Institution Brand 2017 Award.

Brand Licensing’s Evolution: “The Brands & Lifestyle Zone at BLE is going from strength to strength, reflecting the evolution of this sector. From agencies to FMCG, heritage to fashion and sports, the area truly represents the diversity of the industry. We’re also about to introduce a brand new addition to this area to help tell the incredible stories behind these brands and licences. Think live stage, catwalk, interesting seminars…watch this space! With a lot more brands active and performing well in this space, other organisations are now also waking up to KELVYN GARDNER, MD OF LIMA UK,

the potential of licensing as a brand extension and important revenue stream. I think the industry itself has done a fantastic job in highlighting these success stories and The B&LLAs is an integral part of this.“ Supporting The B&LLAs 2017: “We’re delighted to be supporting The B&LLAs as headline sponsor again this year. BLE is dedicated to celebrating excellence and best practice across all fields of licensing and this is such an important and growing area. The B&LLAs are important as they put the focus on brands and lifestyle in particular and offer these brands the opportunity to showcase their incredible innovations at their own specialist event.” Left: The Chupa Chups ‘catwalk show’ certainly attracted some attention at last year’s BLE.

OFFICIAL SUPPORTER OF THE B&LLAS:

Brand Licensing’s Evolution: “As the licensing of all IP becomes increasingly mainstream and better known by both business and the consumer, so the widening of its reach to encompass brands continues to reach out further. We often heard in the past from brand owners who feared loss of control were they to contemplate licensing, now they are more likely to understand the professional structure available to them within existing licensing players. There is good business to be won by all sides as this process continues to develop.” Supporting The B&LLAs 2017: “Recognising the distinctive style and widening scope of brand licensing is not only something that its practitioners deserve, but helps to get out the message that this is a growing opportunity for UK brand owners. The BELLAS perform a great service in marking annual achievement in this specific licensing area and provide a fun occasion, too.” Above: Kelvyn Gardner predicts that brand licensing has a lot more growth potential.

IAN DOWNES, MANAGING DIRECTOR OF START LICENSING SPONSOR OF THE BEST BRAND LICENSED CHILDREN’S PRODUCT OR RANGE AWARD Brand Licensing’s Evolution: “I think brand licensing will become more popular and successful in the UK market over the next few years. It seems to be a sector in real growth. I think brand licensing provides licensees with access to proven properties that have a track record of success and well developed consumer audiences. For licensees looking to accelerate their company's growth, brand licensing is a great marketing tool and there are now lots of success stories to point to. It is a cost effective way of securing retail listings and consumer take up. I think we can be optimistic that this is a licensing sector that will continue to grow in a dynamic and innovative way - Start Licensing is delighted to be part of this exciting licensing trend.” Supporting The B&LLAs 2017: “Brand licensing is a core part of our business - we have experienced considerable success through licensing brands, such as Tango, J20, R Whites and Robinson's for Britvic. We also work with leading brands such as Monty Bojangles and Chewits. We have established strong and credible links with licensees in the sector. Companies such as 151 Products, Yumsh Snacks and Brand of Brothers were introduced to brand Above: Start facilitated licensing by us. Being part of The Bellas allows us to confirm and expanding the J20 underpin our commitment to the brand licensing sector. We have brand through licensing. recently started working with Nadiya Hussain and look forward to introducing Nadiya to the world of brand licensing. It is an exciting time to be involved in brand licensing and The Bellas is a fabulous showcase to be part of.”

RUSSELL NEALE ANTHONY DEVER, MANAGING DIRECTOR OF THOSE LICENSING PEOPLE SPONSOR OF BEST BRAND LICENSED FOOD OR BEVERAGE PRODUCT OR RANGE AWARD Supporting The B&LLAs 2017: “TLP is delighted to support these prestigious awards which truly recognise the value of brands and the all important retail support for them. Good luck everyone.”

GILES ANDREAE AND HEATHER FLYNN, CO-OWNERS AND CO-CREATORS OF HAPPY JACKSON

ADAM BASS, DIRECTOR AND FOUNDER OF GOLDEN GOOSE SPONSOR OF THE BEST BRAND LICENSED CONSUMER HARD GOODS PRODUCTS OR RANGE AWARD Brand Licensing’s Evolution: “With retail’s greater emphasis on private label we expect more, bigger brands to look to licensing primarily as a way of demonstrating brand strength and growing channel power rather than just a source of revenue.” Supporting The B&LLAs 2017: “The B&LLAs are a way to reward the increasing professionalism of this growing marketing discipline, helping to ensure that high quality licensing is recognised by the whole marketing industry.”

SPONSOR OF BEST DEPARTMENT STORE OR MIXED RETAILER BRAND LICENSED RETAILER EXECUTION Brand Licensing’s Evolution: “The most important factor in brand licensing is relevance. Consumers have a keen sense of what works when you extend a brand - and, of course, what doesn’t. With Happy Jackson, we work with a very tight bunch of licensees who understand exactly what we’re trying to do, and why we’re trying to do it. Designing the products ourselves from scratch, and working with our licensees’ studios to realise these designs into products, we think, really helps. This creates an authenticity, which resonates with the consumer.” Supporting The B&LLAs 2017: “It’s only the second year, but the B&LLAs already feels like our natural home! This awards event is full of people who really care about that they’re doing. That's a great feeling - and it makes a big difference.”

Right: Golden Goose’s Adam Bass.

NICOLAS LOUFRANI, CEO OF SMILEY WORLD SPONSOR OF THE CATEGORY BEST SUPERMARKET BRAND LICENSED RETAILER EXECUTION AWARD Brand Licensing’s Evolution: “I see two different trends. One is the consolidation of brand and manufacturing. It is best illustrated by Lacoste, which for decades was a fully licensed apparel brand and is now fully integrated in the Maus group or Moschino, owned by its licensee Aeffe. In either cases secondary categories like shoes, sunglasses or watches are still licensed to third parties. The other trend is DTR. Major retail chains - from department stores to the discounters - are looking for brands to give a better perceived value to their private labels, can command higher prices and generate more margin as well as drive traffic to their stores with brands or celebrities that are appealing to different consumer groups.” Supporting The B&LLAs 2017: “We are supporting the Awards because we are a pure lifestyle-driven licensing brand and we fully support the way that the B&LLAs are recognising brands such as ourselves in the licensing space. The industry is no longer about being just a 'nuts and bolts’ licensing model, you need to be creative, innovative and push the boundaries and The B&LLAs is driving wider recognition of this and the excellence in this field. We attended the event last year and were really impressed. It created a great networking opportunity and also provides a dedicated event that elevates the great work being done in brand lifestyle licensing.”

SPONSORS SPEAK OUT

Below: Teri Niadna, md, Brandgenuity Europe.

TERI NIADNA, MD, BRANDGENUITY EUROPE SPONSOR OF THE BEST SPECIALIST BRAND LICENSED RETAILER EXECUTION AWARD Brand Licensing’s Evolution: “For a number of reasons licensing is now more important than ever for brands: additional revenue streams, consumer engagement outside of core brand activation, and the re-enforcement of emotional engagement. We believe that brands are waking up to the true power of licensing and this realisation process has been partly driven by the welcoming and acceptance of licensed product ranges by the retail industry. Consumers actively seek out products and services from brands they trust and the right brand extension can be a great consumer signposting.” Supporting The B&LLAs 2017: "We believe in the power of brands: understanding their vision and voice, history and personality and creating sustainable, meaningful new products and services that delight both consumers and retailers. Corporate brand licensing has enormous potential to grow in the UK and Europe, and we’re delighted to help draw attention to the great work that our colleagues in the industry are doing in this space."

DAMIAN HOPKINS, CEO, SELECT LICENSING SPONSOR OF BEST BRAND LICENSED HEALTH & BEAUTY PRODUCT OR RANGE AWARD Supporting The B&LLAs 2017: “It’s fantastic that lifestyle brands are finally getting the recognition they deserve by way of this fantastic event. At Select Licensing we only focus on lifestyle brands, so it seemed an obvious synergy for us to be one of the key sponsors at the event. These awards are important to our industry to celebrate the significant value that lifestyle brands bring within FMCG and fashion product categories. We all know that it takes blood, sweat and tears to build a brand and once that core value has been established these brand owners are keen to seek out appropriate brand extensions via licensing, increasing consumer touch points for their brand, the B&LLAs celebrate some of these fantastic collaborations.” Left: Damian Hopkins, ceo of Select Licensing.

LOUISE FRENCH, VICE PRESIDENT MARKETING AND BUSINESS DEVELOPMENT, INTERNATIONAL OF BEANSTALK SPONSOR OF THE BEST HIGH STREET FASHION BRAND LICENSED RETAILER EXECUTION AWARD Brand Licensing’s Evolution: “As brands continue to look for new ways to speak to today’s consumer, licensing offers a persuasive model for brands to credibly and actively engage with them in new and exciting ways. A consumer’s interaction with a brand via licensing is both active and choicely, and commands continued engagement above and beyond the passive experience of most market messages that increasingly bombard today’s consumer. As such we see licensing as an increasingly important marketing tool for brands going forward, and forecast continued growth and increased innovation in the branded sector in the foreseeable future.” Supporting The B&LLAs 2017: “For over 25 years, Beanstalk has been a leader in the brand licensing industry, setting the standard by which licensing has developed as a powerful and brand-enhancing marketing tool. As the UK market continues to evolve, we are excited by how brand owners, manufacturers and retailers have embraced licensing, to the extent that there is now demand for an awards ceremony purely to celebrate the achievements in the nonentertainment sector. Beanstalk is proud to sponsor The Bella Awards again in 2017 and looks forward to the continued growth and success of these awards that honour and reward our exciting industry.” Left: Beanstalk’s Louise French.

LIBBY GRANT, GLOBAL BUSINESS DEVELOPMENT DIRECTOR – BRANDS OF CPLG SPONSOR OF THE BEST BRAND LICENSED FASHION ACCESSORIES OR LIFESTYLE PRODUCT OR RANGE AWARD Brand Licensing’s Evolution: “Let’s not forget that brands have always had a place in the licensing arena. In fact I recently read that over 55% of global retail sales of licensed revenue comes from non-character and entertainment properties. So while entertainment remains, and will likely always play, an important part in the mix it’s great to see the industry as a whole, from retailer to licensee to the press are really starting to place focus on brands. We are also seeing a lot more of what I would classify as traditional ‘entertainment’ licensees move into the brand space and likewise at a retail level. Brands are not dependent on TV ratings or box office success so they can provide a low risk way of retailers and licensees diversifying their product offering. Indeed they are not normally time or market dependent, which also helps as retailers continue to expand their footprint internationally and online. I think brands are also becoming more aware of the potential to extend into new areas and to use licensing as a marketing platform to drive awareness of their core product offering. It feels like brands are breaking through and it’s an exciting time to be part of brand licensing!” Supporting The B&LLAs 2017: “We believe that The B&LLAs are integral to helping build awareness of brand licensing within the industry and the importance brands play within the overall licensing mix. CPLG is committed to becoming a global player in brand extensions and to strike the balance between our entertainment and brand business so it provides a perfect platform from which to showcase what we do and the brands with which we work.”

RICHARD PINK, MD OF PINK KEY CONSULTING

Below: Richard Pink, has been instrumental in helping to grow brand licensing activity.

SPONSOR OF THE BEST BRAND LICENSED HOMEWARES PRODUCT OR RANGE AWARD (through the Pringles brand it represents) Brand Licensing’s Evolution: “Brand licensing, as distinct from properties that are primarily entertainment-based, is still well below where it could be in its development within the licensing industry in Europe. The US has woken up to advantages of having brands that don't have the peaks and troughs associated with entertainment, but still have the awareness and the flexibility to develop progressive and creative programmes. However licensees, agents and the brands themselves are all now seeing what is possible, not only from a financial perspective, but also an understanding that rather than ‘cheapening’ the brand, a well thought out and creative programme can actually enhance the brand perception and add to its value. I think this area is only going to grow.” Supporting The B&LLAs 2017: “We are supporting the B&LLAs because they have more resonance with what we do as an agency. The Licensing Awards are great fun and because of the size of that part of the industry, the players need to be recognised. However, brand programmes also need recognition and there is a danger that the great work coming out of this area will just get lost in noise of a very noisy industry. The B&LLAs is a place where brand programmes similar to the ones we run can be seen and assessed in the way they deserve. It’s what we do, and we feel it’s where we belong.”

DAVE COLLINS, CO-FOUNDER, POWERSTATION STUDIOS

JOSIE LAHEY-JAMES, LICENSING MANAGER OF LIFESTYLE GROUP, HEARST SPONSOR OF THE BEST BRAND LICENSED GIFTING PRODUCT OR RANGE AWARD Supporting The B&LLAs 2017: “Licensing is all about brand-building and creative growth into new areas, so having prestigious recognition in the form of events like The B&LLAs makes it all the more worthwhile. They are a fantastic celebration of achievements in the industry, and a great networking opportunity. Visibility is key to a brand’s success, so raising awareness within the industry at awards like these is crucial. Hearst Magazines UK owns the homes market: Country Living magazine is the biggest selling homes title in the UK and House Beautiful sits at number 3. Every month we offer our loyal readers an escape into an appealing world, providing them with a wealth of ideas for their homes and gardens. As the largest digital magazine publisher in the UK, Hearst Magazines UK has the expertise and resource to execute top quality promotional activity alongside every single licensed product. It was such a natural step to build on the trust in our brands and bring them to life through our licensed ranges. The products we licence and the partners we work with all endorse our central values.” Below: The Country Living licensing programme has seen the brand expand into products which reflect the magazine’s ethos.

SPONSOR OF BEST LICENSED LIFESTYLE BRAND AWARD Supporting The B&LLAs 2017: “The licensing industry continues to grow and evolve and we fully support the persistence of this growth through the positive reinforcement that The B&LLAs can bring to the markets and retail. We feel it is important to support the licensing industry. To have an event where true lifestyle brands and their licensing programmes are recognised is a progressive move for the industry. It is a move we not only embrace, but also actively perpetuate and encourage. The awards highlight how creative brand extension can strengthen a brand and enhance the route to consumer discovery by providing brands with new and innovative ways to connect with consumers. The awards not only raise awareness, but also celebrate the practice of brilliant brand extension, and how it sets the bar for the industry while uncovering and revealing the ‘art of possible’.” Above: PowerStation Studios’ Dave Collins.

TERRY LAMB, HEAD OF LICENSING OF CORSAIR LIFESTYLE: SPONSOR OF THE BEST LICENSED FOOD OR BEVERAGE BRAND AWARD Brand Licensing’s Evolution: “We see significant growth within the lifestyle brand sector over the next five years, as many more brand owners recognise the benefits of licensing, not just in generating additional revenues, but also in building and promoting brand awareness. It’s this brand building and promotion which has driven our recent licensing deals. Lifestyle licences have now become such an important part of Corsair’s growth, we’ve set up a separate division, and taken on additional staff, to focus solely on this sector.” Supporting The B&LLAs: “It is important to recognise the value of the brand and lifestyle market, both in its potential and its increasing importance to the licensing industry overall. It’s right we recognise those companies doing a great job of developing the lifestyle side of the licensing industry. Because of this, we are very proud to support and be a part of The B&LLAS.” Right: Terry Lamb.
