For Olivia Palermo, travel is a regular part of her daily routine – hitting different destinations, environments, temperatures and time zones frequently. She’s a pro when it comes to looking polished – regardless of the temperature outside. So for her, it’s all about ease – from the packing process (which is apparently quite in-depth) to her time in the air to the outfits she puts together, for work or sightseeing, while abroad. Ms. Palermo shows us how it’s done – whether she’s carrying on or checking a bag.

A Travelling
Planes, trains, automobiles, and boats. Olivia Palermo’s travel schedule is as hectic as they come. From hitting as many as 5 countries in the same week to simultaneously managing various time zones, the one thing that needs to come easy is knowing what to pack… and how to pack it. We will let the pro take it from here. Sei sempre in movimento. Quali sono i tuoi primi ricordi legati al viaggio? D’estate, facevo meravigliosi viaggi con mia madre. Andavamo in giro per l’Europa, per intere settimane.
You always seem to be on the go. What are your earliest memories of travelling? I used to take wonderful trips in the summer with my mother and we would travel throughout Europe for several weeks.
Dove andavate? Londra, Parigi, Roma e Venezia. Viaggiare, per me – e penso per i giovani in generale – è sicuramente una forma d’istruzione.
Where to? We would go to London, Paris, Rome and Venice. Travelling for me, and I think for young people as well, is definitely an education.
Cosa ti piace fare d’estate? Mi piace prendermi tutto il tempo libero che posso. Adoro andare in spiaggia e trascorrere tanto tempo in acqua – mi libera la mente. Mi piace anche esplorare e passeggiare senza meta nelle piccole città di mare che incontro sul mio cammino. Sono una ragazza da spiaggia.
What are some things that you love to do in the summer time? I like to take as much time off as I can. I love going to the beach and spending time on the water – it clears my head. I also love the act of discovery and wandering in and out of every small beach town that I encounter. I am a beach girl.
Parliamo di colori e tessuti: quali ti piace indossare d’estate? Più di tutto lo chiffon: si muove con un’eleganza incredibile. Ma anche i tessuti di tweed leggeri. E i colori pastello: indossarli d’estate per me ha un fascino particolare!
What are some of your favourite things to wear during the summer? I always like to wear chiffon. It moves beautifully. I also love light tweeds. I also have to suggest pastel colours – there’s something about wearing them in the summer that I love!

What are some of your favourite things to wear in the summer in New York? Since a beach doesn’t exist in New York City, you have to dress a little bit more urban. Denim on denim is a great way to go. I also love white pants – as does everyone else too. I love throwing a little sweater on top of denim... I always wear stripes during the summer, as well.
Preferisci viaggiare con bagaglio a mano o valigia da stiva? Hai delle regole fondamentali quando fai la valigia? Bisogna considerare il contesto in cui si sta andando e il programma delle proprie giornate. L’importante è mettere in valigia ciò che servirà per quel che si farà a destinazione. Comunque, io porto sempre con me anche alcuni pezzi basici – come un paio di pantaloni e una t-shirt. E gli accessori, naturalmente!
What’s your preference – travelling with a carry-on suitcase or checking a bag?, Do you have any rules that you live by when packing? I think you have to figure out what environment you’re going to and what your schedule is going to be like. It’s all about packing for what you will be doing while you’re away. Yet, I still like to carry basic pieces with me – like a pair of pants and a great T-shirt. Of course, always carry your accessories with you!
Quali sono gli oggetti che vuoi avere sempre con te quando viaggi? In aereo porto sempre il caricabatterie del cellulare, i prodotti di bellezza, gli accessori e i gioielli. E
What are the items that you always like to have with you when travelling? On a plane I always have my phone charger, my toiletries, all my accessories and jewelry. Let’s see…

Cosa ti piace indossare in estate quando sei in città, specialmente a New York? Poiché a New York non c’è una spiaggia, bisogna adottare uno stile più cittadino. Il total look denim è un’ottima opzione. Mi piacciono anche i pantaloni bianchi – come a tutti, del resto. Mi piace mettere un pull leggero sui jeans... E anche le righe: d’estate le porto sempre.
poi… un pull di cashmere morbidissimo che mi tiene calda. E non parto mai da casa senza le mie calze da viaggio di cashmere.
I also always have a great big cashmere sweater to wear because it keeps me warm. And I never leave home without my cashmere socks.
L’estate è caldissima, ma tu riesci sempre ad avere un look fresco. Come fai? Non lo so, non so come faccio. Forse è solo fortuna… o è merito dell’aria condizionata! (Ride)
The summer’s hot and you always manage to look cool. How do you do it? I don’t know. I don’t know how I do it. I guess I’m lucky… or I really enjoy air conditioning! (Laughs)
Parliamo di accessori. Quali sono le tue regole generali? Adoro i bijoux in generale ma, se si vuole fare un investimento, un gioiello vintage, un pezzo importante, è sempre un’ottima scelta. E’ qualcosa che resterà per sempre.
Tell me about your approach to accessories. Do you have any rules of thumb? I love costume jewelry but when you are looking for an investment piece, try looking for an estate statement piece. It’s always a great way to go because that’s something you will have forever.
Conservi tutti gli abiti e gli accessori che hai? Sì, conservo tantissimo, ho addirittura degli archivi. Ma regalo anche tanto, soprattutto agli amici so che ne faranno buon uso.
Do you hold on to your stuff? I do. I hold on to a lot and I have archives as well. I also give a lot away though. I give a lot to friends, so everything goes to good use.
