FY20 Annual Report SEPTEMBER 2019-AUGUST 2020

A Message from

Nina Radetich At Make-A-Wish Southern Nevada, we are committed to ensuring that no child waits even one unnecessary day to experience the hope and joy that a wish brings. We didn’t know how much this fiscal year would put that commitment to the test. ®

When the year began, our chapter was on pace for a sixth consecutive year of growth in revenue and wish-granting. In November, Fashion Luncheon set an all-time fundraising record, while community partner support of Walk For Wishes in March far outpaced expectations. Wish kids from all over the country traveled to Las Vegas for their wish come true, like Riley who memorably wished to be a Las Vegas Metropolitan Police Officer. And a chapter record 176 wish kids in our community would see their heartfelt wish come true. Then everything changed. To protect the health of wish kids and their families, Make-A-Wish® paused wish-granting that involves travel and gatherings in mid-March. Over 5,000 wishes across the country – including 39 right here in Southern Nevada – were immediately postponed due to COVID-19. But our mission never stopped. Through conducting virtual visits to reimagining wishes that enabled social distancing, our community of supporters pivoted to find new, creative ways to deliver the Make-A-Wish mission to 95 kids last year. Kids like Evan whose World Wish Day car parade redefined a shopping spree wish and Maddy who saw her interior designs come to life in a room of her very own. Computers, college scholarships, and even a saxophone – these wishes brought hope to children during a time of added isolation and vulnerability. While we’re granting all the wishes we can right now, we’re also getting ready to grant wishes at an unprecedented pace once it’s safe to do so. That’s why I am grateful for our community of donors, volunteers, staff, and medical referral partners – like you – who continue to find innovative and engaging ways to support our wish kids and families.

Together, we can continue to be a light of hope throughout this time of crisis — and beyond. With kind regards and gratitude,

Nina Radetich Interim CEO

The Year at

Make-A-Wish Southern Nevada FASHION LUNCHEON For the 18th year, nearly 200 prominent members of the Las Vegas community came together in November 2019 to support the Make-A-Wish® mission at Fashion Luncheon. For the second year, attendees dined in fashion at Scarpetta inside The Cosmopolitan of Las Vegas. Between courses, models walked the runway in looks from featured designer, Balmain. This year’s fundraising total set an all-time record, thanks to funds raised through both a silent and live auction, and a raffle for over 100 donated prizes. Special thanks to committee co-chair Melissa Akkaway, who raised more than $175,000 at Vegas Magazine’s 11th Annual Vegas Gives event.

WALK FOR WISHES In March 2020, nearly 2,500 wish kids, families, volunteers, supporters, and even four-legged friends came together in the early morning hours to participate in this year’s Walk For Wishes® presented by Allegiant. With a new layout and route map at Town Square Las Vegas, the event featured an opening ceremony presided over by News 3’s Kim & Dana Wagner and Mix 94.1’s Mercedes & JC. After the ceremony that concluded with a surprise wish reveal for wish kid Kahina, participants completed the 1-mile walk or 5K run, then enjoyed activities, giveaways, and food from our amazing community partners.

INAUGURAL WISH HEROES CAMPAIGN DECEMBER 2019 During the month of December, fourteen members of our community stepped up as wish heroes for the inaugural fundraising campaign to make wishes come true.

GIVING TUESDAY NOW MAY 2020 On May 5th, the world came together to celebrate unity, to stay connected, and to give back to their communities through Giving Tuesday Now. In Southern Nevada, the community rallied around wish kid Madelyn for a one-day online fundraiser to grant her wish to have a shopping spree for college.

CONVERSATIONS WITH WISH MOMS AUGUST 2020 In a live online event broadcast from The Wishing Place, three remarkable women openly and honestly shared their unique journey of parenting a child with a critical illness. Viewers experienced first-hand accounts of the impact of a wish and raised funds to help waiting wishes come true.

CRISS ANGEL MAGIC WAND AWARD DECEMBER 2019 During a sold-out performance of “Criss Angel MINDFREAK,” Make-A-Wish angel mom and volunteer Stephanie Driscoll received the eponymous Magic Wand Award from long-time wish granter Criss Angel. A true example of strength and hope, Stephanie recorded more than 130 volunteer hours during the last year and continues to represent Make-A-Wish by speaking of how the wish experience made a difference during a difficult time for her sweet daughter, Avery. MESSAGES OF HOPE When wishes were delayed due to COVID-19, Make-A-Wish launched “Messages of Hope” to continue to bring hope and joy to wish kids now waiting for their wish come true. Local community partners, volunteers, staff, wish alum, and more answered the call, submitting more than 25 video messages to help build excitement and motivation for children with critical illnesses – all without needing to leave home. 2020 ANNUAL REPORT

MEET MADDY

I wish to have a room makeover Maddy, 11 heart condition

Madeleine, also known as Maddy to those closest to her, is a funny and intelligent 11-year-old girl who has a heart of gold. She has a creative personality and loves making jewelry, spending time with her family, and reading. Despite all she’s been through, Maddy is a sweetheart who loves to spread joy to those around her.

Doctors discovered Maddy’s heart condition after she passed out at an airport at the age of three. Maddy’s condition makes it difficult for her lungs to get the blood they need, causing her heart to work harder than usual. To treat this condition, Maddy takes several medications, has undergone six cardio catheterizations, and now uses oxygen daily. Although she’s endured a lot, Maddy continues to move through life radiating hope and positivity. Maddy’s oldest sibling recently moved out, allowing Maddy to have her very own room for the first time. When it came to her wish, Maddy immediately knew she wanted to let her interior design skills shine and create a concept for her room makeover. Maddy’s wish wouldn’t be possible if it weren’t for the insight and expertise of Make-A-Wish volunteer and interior designer, Jimmy.

Virtual Zoom meetings allowed Maddy to share her vision with Jimmy, including her Pinterest boards filled with creative ideas, color schemes and design inspiration. Maddy’s collaboration with Jimmy helped create the room of Maddy’s dreams. Maddy’s new room is everything she could have hoped for and more. From her desired color scheme to anime and Fortnite inspired décor items, Maddy now has a space to call her own. What makes this wish particularly special to Maddy is that she was in control of her room design, and it came to life just as she imagined. She now has a room where she can rest and leave all her cares on the other side of her bedroom door.

This is such an amazing, fantastic, purely Maddy space. This wish has already made such a huge impact on Maddy and our family. — Amanda, wish mom 2020 ANNUAL REPORT

MEET RILEY

I wish to be a Las Vegas police officer Riley, 15 nervous system disorder

In the summer of 2012, Riley started staring off and feeling ill. Not knowing what was wrong, his parents rushed him to the hospital and doctors discovered that he was having a seizure. Riley seized for nearly 14 hours before the medical team got it under control.

After much consideration and with the support of his family, Riley underwent a very risky brain surgery that succeeded but resulted in paralysis on the left side of his body. Riley was forced to relearn how to do everything, from walking to showering. But his determination paid off when almost one year after his surgery, Riley walked out of the hospital, seizure free.

Riley had a jam-packed day with the LVMPD. Shortly after his arrival at the Academy, he donned his utility belt and dove straight into basic defensive training, where he learned everything from handcuffing to flashlight manipulation. Afterwards, he met Sheriff Joe Lombardo and was introduced to the SWAT team, Air, K-9 and Motor Units.

Riley’s desire to be in law enforcement goes way back to his childhood. After seeing the coverage of the One October tragedy in Las Vegas, Riley was deeply impressed, watching how the power of law enforcement brought the community together. That’s when Riley realized his one true wish. Riley wished to be a police officer, but not in his home state of New Jersey. Inspired by the acts of bravery he watched on his TV, Riley specifically wanted to join the Las Vegas Metropolitan Police Department.

After some additional training, Riley and the fellow members of his “Blue” Class took a group photo. There, his fellow recruits presented him with a custom-made plaque they had all signed. Now armed with a wealth of information and newly acquired skills, Officer Riley put on his official uniform and graduated from the training academy.

On September 30th, 2019, the day before the second anniversary of the shooting, Riley’s wish came true. After a surprise police escort to the airport coordinated by Make-A-Wish New Jersey, Riley and his parents traveled across the country to start his police officer training at the Northwest Area Command’s Jerry Keller Training Facility.

The fun wasn’t over yet! Now an “official” officer, Riley attended a real-life briefing and then went out on his first call, a simulated robbery scenario. Using everything he learned that day, Riley and his squad pulled up to the scene, apprehended two suspects and cleared an entire office building. “This has been such a great time to see him actually truly smile,” Riley’s mom, Jennifer, explained. Returning to New Jersey with an excitement to help his community, Riley feels like he can overcome any obstacle in his life.

Fiscal Year

2020 Results COVID-19 hit us midway through our fiscal year in 2020, but we concluded both of our signature internal events before the world shut down. Walk For Wishes and Fashion Luncheon combined outperformed 2019 by 22%. While March-May revenue was down substantially year over year, we partially recovered in the summer, ending the fiscal year down just 11% from 2019. Our biggest revenue drop (56%) was in in-kind revenue (donated goods/services) because of our travel cessation (donated or discounted park tickets, airline miles, and lodging make up a large part of our revenue annually). With all fundraising expenses associated with the Internal Events occurring pre-COVID, our reduction in wishes granted in the summer meant a sharp reduction to our program ratio. But we managed our expenses to end the year with another surplus – allowing us to save for the wishes waiting when travel resumes.

There are few experiences more powerful than

making a wish come true. After going through so much, this makes me feel like I’m on the other side of all the bad things that have already happened. Only good things can come from here. I absolutely love the opportunity that you guys give us. Thank you, Make-A-Wish! — Fabian, wish kid

I wish to have a college scholarship Fabian, 18 cancer

The whole experience was magical. It was very stressfree, relaxing, and exciting for the whole family! It really gave Lily the opportunity to enjoy all the magic and fun that a young child is supposed to have. This is something that she may have never been able to experience for years. She was really able to have fun and just do whatever she wanted to do.

I wish to go to the Walt Disney World® Resort Lily, 3 leukemia

— Kellie, wish mom to Lily

I wish to meet Steph Curry

In my opinion the wish being granted gave Jamar more hope and drive to continue his journey despite the pain or whatever else comes with dealing with his illness. He was able to share his story with his classmates which allowed them to be further educated about Jamar’s health issues and that I believe was great because beforehand they were not aware. I also believe Jamar became more motivated as an individual. — Michelle, wish mom to Jamar
