Jesse Chapman

BEYOND PALM COAST

Jesse Chapman, a graduate of Flagler Palm Coast High School, was an assistant editor on the new movie 'Star Trek Beyond.' ALEX WALSH CONTRIBUTING WRITER

W

hen he was 4 years old, Jesse Chapman watched the 1989 version of “Batman” starring Michael Keaton hundreds of times — so often that his mother eventually hid the VHS tape from him. Even at such a young age, Chapman was blown away by the power of film. “I realized there was a tone to that movie — very dark, surreal, magical,” he explained recently during an interview conducted in Los Angeles, the city he now calls home. Chapman grew up in Palm Coast and attended its public schools before enrolling at the University of Central Florida for a bachelor’s degree in fine arts. From there he moved to California and worked his way into a successful career in Hollywood’s film industry. Last week, Chapman finished up more than a year’s work as an assistant editor on “Star Trek Beyond,” the latest movie in the

successful sci-fi franchise and a picture that is sure to rank among this summer’s biggest blockbusters. HOW HE GOT THERE

After “Batman” (the tape was hidden in the silverware drawer, his mother would later reveal), Chapman’s most vivid movie memory from his childhood was watching the performances of Jim Carrey, particularly in the 1994 comedy “The Mask.” For the young Chapman, Carrey’s portrayal of Stanley Ipkiss was about much more than a few laughs. “It’s about a guy who’s kind of nerdy and kind of a loner, and then he finds this magical item that makes him someone people want to be around, and that’s what movies do for me,” Chapman explained. Never a sports fan, Chapman for a long time felt like he had to try harder in order to relate to other kids growing up in Florida, where football reigns. Watching “The Mask” changed

that perception for Chapman. At the film’s end, Carrey’s character makes a conclusion that has stuck with Chapman all through his life. “He realizes he doesn’t need the mask,” Chapman explained. “You don’t have to be the person that anyone wants you to be. You just have to pursue who you want to be.” In order to pursue who he wanted to be — a player in the film industry — Chapman’s first real step was enrolling in Flagler Palm Coast High School’s summer theater program, led by Mary-Lou Beale. He loved it from the very beginning. “I did it every year — two, sometimes three times a year,” he explained. The experience motivated him to continue to pursue his dream, and so he applied to the University of Central Florida’s film program — and was rejected. “It was a huge letdown,” Chapman allows today, but not enough of one to stymie his drive. Despite not getting a spot in the film school, Chapman was accepted as a general student at UCF, so he attended, worked hard and reapplied. The second time worked. Chapman was ecstatic. “It was exactly what I thought it would be,” he recalled of the Film Production program. “I loved it: every second of it, every class.” As a film student, Chapman would meet instructors like editing teacher Mark Gerstein and directing teacher Lori Ingle, people that would eventually help him make the leap to film’s biggest stage, in Los Angeles. HEADED FOR HOLLYWOOD

The move to California was “hugely scary,” but Chapman had a plan for getting going: Once he arrived, he contacted every person on a list of 20 UCF film school alumni that Gerstein and Ingle helped him build. One of those emails got him a job helping with the pilot episode of a new show for HBO. The show wasn’t picked up,

which meant the job lasted all of one day. But even that small window was enough for Chapman to make something happen, as he parlayed that into a nine-month stint as a production assistant on a TV version of the movie “10 Things I Hate About You.” The work was hardly glamorous — answering phones, making copies. “It was frustrating because I knew that all the work I did and all the energy I poured into it, while it was important to develop those relationships, it wasn’t the track I wanted to be on,” Chapman explained. He started targeting postproduction work, and found a job working on the penultimate season of HBO’s “Entourage” series, starring Adrian Grenier and Jeremy Piven. Now on track toward his career goals, Chapman worked several more jobs as a post-production assistant in television before making the move to film, landing a spot as an apprentice editor on “Fast & Furious 6,” a movie that has grossed nearly $800 million in revenue worldwide to date, according to boxofficemojo.com. He was then hired as an assistant editor for “Furious 7,” which grossed more than $1.5 billion. ‘STAR TREK BEYOND’

That first film job of Chapman’s, on “Furious 6,” was for a movie directed by Justin Lin, a rising star among Hollywood’s filmmakers. Lin’s newest project is “Star Trek Beyond,” a Paramount Pictures film with an estimated budget of $150 million. Chapman had been working on that project since last summer, up until wrapping up just last week. “Star Trek Beyond” is an action movie, but Chapman says moviegoers don’t need to be fans of the broader Star Trek franchise to enjoy the film. “Everything that’s going on is so relatable,” Chapman said. “You have characters dealing with super common problems.” “Star Trek Beyond” is in theaters everywhere July 22.

"Star Trek Beyond" opens July 22.

FAVORITE PALM COAST MEMORY Growing up in Palm Coast, there wasn’t much for young people to do, Jesse Chapman recalls. Chapman now lives in Los Angeles and works in the movie industry, his latest job coming as an assistant editor on “Star Trek Beyond.” But that doesn’t mean there was nothing to do. Chapman’s top pick: going to Steak ‘n’ Shake with his closest friends. “It was this unspoken central hub of interaction and community,” he said. “We would go there after everything.”

After the home invasion:

A young mother’s life Koda Crawford gives her version of the incident, in which her husband defended the home by shooting an intruder dead July 13. BRIAN MCMILLAN EXECUTIVE EDITOR

Koda Crawford is tough. She posts photos of her tattoos on Facebook and isn’t afraid to use four-letter words or stand up for herself. But this blonde-haired, blue-eyed 20-year-old is also gentle. She’s been married to Darien Corbett for almost two years, has a 1-yearold daughter named Serenity, and proudly states her occupation as “stay-at-home mommy.” While living in New Smyrna Beach, Koda and Darien saw the meth-lab busts, and they decided they wanted a change of scenery to raise their little family. “Palm Coast is known to be a very nice, beautiful city, so we said, ‘Let’s move to Palm Coast,’” Koda recalled. They landed in a duplex on Frank Place with some roommates, and they were making happy memories. Then July 13 happened. Two men barged in. They were armed. They wore shirts wrapped

THE ‘STAR WARS’ GUN

When she was a girl, Koda Crawford’s mother didn’t let her have guns — not even a squirt gun in the pool. “I was raised to believe they were horrible,” Koda said. And she agreed with her mother. But when her husband decided he wanted to buy a gun — a custom-made .40 caliber handgun that looked like the blaster used by Boba Fett in “Star Wars” — she went along with it. You make some compromises when you get married, right? When friends came over to hang out and drink, Darien would show off the gun. It was a novelty. It was fun. ‘WHERE’S MY GUN?’

Darien Corbett, 21, works the late shift at Cracker Barrel, so he usually gets home after midnight. Koda has adjusted to his schedule to the point that she is up at 2 a.m. with him regularly, and July 13 was no different. They were upgrading in the bedroom: new furniture, new rug, moving the computer around. Koda was vacuuming the rug near the baby’s crib when they heard some commotion in the front room. Their roommates also work late, so that wasn’t unusual, but this wasn’t normal commotion. Darien stepped out of the bedroom to check what was going on, and then he rushed back into the bedroom and closed the door, saying frantically, “Where’s my gun?” The gun wasn’t in its normal place! They had been moving things — it was all in disarray. “Where’s my gun?” Darien shouted again. ‘THAT’S A BABY!’

THE INTRUDERS

The Flagler County Sheriff’s Office responded to the home at 2:17 a.m. and found a man lying face down, dead, with a black cloth around his face. His gun had been kicked away from him. He was later identified as 28-yearold Victor James Betty of 17 Cloverdale Court S. An inmate search shows that he had been arrested on drug charges twice before, in 2013 and 2011. The second intruder was not located after deputies and a K-9 team searched the area, but later, he surrendered himself at the FCSO Operations Center: 19-year-old Carl Devore of 6 Cedar Court. Detectives have obtained a warrant charging him with second-degree felony murder and attempted home invasion robbery. He has been booked into

ade it, desperately trying to keep these men away from his family. Darien couldn’t reach his gun while he was blocking the door, so he took a chance, gave up his leverage for a split second and grabbed his gun. But it wasn’t loaded. The intruders kicked the door open. They pointed their guns into the bedroom and shouted, “Where’s the money?” Koda could have been frozen in fear, but instead she scolded them: “That’s a baby!” The intruders were pointing their guns directly at Serenity’s crib. Koda had startled them enough that they backed up and turned their attention back to the roommates in the front room. And that gave Darien an opportunity. He had his gun, and he had to protect his family. He put in the clip. He ran down the hall, closed his eyes, and he pulled the trigger twice. Koda reconstructed the scene afterward like this: One bullet missed, and the second bullet hit an intruder in the neck and then traveled right through the closed front door, leaving a small hole. The intruder crumpled to the floor. Then Darien’s gun jammed. The second intruder ran out the door and into the darkness.

Koda said the detectives questioned everyone to determine whether they knew Betty or Devore. “The cop’s sitting there like, ‘They must have known them.’” But so far, Koda’s right on that point: The Sheriff’s Office said no connections have been made to link any of the parties.

been themes of late for Koda: Her dad died of cancer a year ago, and her grandmother died months after that. “So, it’s not really been a great year,” she said. Koda and Darien would like to move — possibly out of Palm Coast, which, after July 13, doesn’t feel as safe to them anymore.

THANKFUL FOR A GUN

It was hard to fall asleep after the incident. And the next day, there were physical reminders in the home. A large frame containing about 40 family photos was damaged by one of the bullets, which passed through the wall and into the garage. Koda loves the picture frame, so she said she’ll probably close it up with some glue and keep it. That was the first bullet, the one that missed. And every morning — after Koda and Darien and Serenity have gone to bed at those odd hours — the sun comes up, and a spot of sunlight appears on their front door, the outside world entering their home whether they like it or not, through the hole left by that second bullet.

Friends and family have reached out to Darien to say they’re proud of him for protecting his family. Koda spoke with her mother after the incident. “She’s very scared,” Koda said. “She cried a lot. … I highly doubt her views on guns changed at all, but she was thankful we had one.” In the end, Darien’s two shots were the only shots that were fired. If the intruders had pulled their triggers, one or more of the residents at 3A Frank Place might not be alive today. Why did these men attack Koda and Darien’s home? Koda said no one in the home knew either Betty or Devore, so it couldn’t have been a personal motive. Koda said she is proud of the Corvette in her driveway, and her TVs. “I’m not living in poverty just because I’m in a freaking duplex,” she said. Maybe the men discovered somehow that there were nice things in the home and decided to barge in and demand money? On Facebook, people speculated that this was a “drug deal gone bad.” “They’re calling my house a drug house, and that’s not true,” she said. She reiterated that the intruders were demanding money, not marijuana. However, a spokesman from the Sheriff’s Office insisted that the investigation has revealed that drugs were involved. The press release sent to all the media in the area stated that the two intruders entered the home “seeking marijuana.” No further details could be given because the investigation is ongoing. The Sheriff’s Office stated that the house was searched after the incident, and no drugs were found, but the investigation continues, including interviews with Devore.

How ‘Pokemon Go’ hijacked date night

EXECUTIVE EDITOR

While my wife and I were preparing to go on a date Saturday night, my 6-year-old daughter asked, “Why do you want to get rid of us? You don’t want your kids around?” “No, it’s nothing like that,” my wife, Hailey, said. “We just want to go on a date.” Later that evening, we went to dinner and a wedding reception. Then, we drove around for a while. What a lovely evening! I was saying something extremely important, something soulful and wise and romantic, when I happened to glance over at Hailey, who was staring at her phone. “Whoa!” she said. “What’s a Wild Ghastly?” “A wild what?” I said.

‘Let’s let the Justice Dept. do its job’ More than just a good man died when Martin Luther King was killed. The purpose of his march was to get a law passed to ensure the protection of his beliefs. He truly believed, as most whites and most blacks do, that all men are equal. Unfortunately, when he was killed, there was no one ready or capable of unselfishly fulfilling his vision. The law insured equal opportunity. After that the politicians, and money and power hungry egomaniacs, hijacked MLK’s dream. Instead of bringing people together they all worked, as they do today, for division to benefit themselves. President Lyndon Johnson created the ghettos and dependency programs. Even though many beautiful black women won the Miss America contests, we have Miss

Then it became clear. “Are you playing ‘Pokemon Go’ on our date?” She sort of stammered and then laughed a wonderful, guilty laugh. As we drove on State Road 100, she pointed out all the Gyms, where you can apparently battle other Pokemon that you’ve collected. “Look, the Panera Bread drive-thru is a Pokestop,” she said. “So is the mural at Panda Express. They’re everywhere!” “Well, I’m glad you can amuse yourself on our date,” I said. “I just play so I can connect with my kids,” she said. “Uh huh.” This game is taking over the world: It’s the biggest mobile game sensation ever — bigger than “Candy Crush.” It’s causing people in California to fall off cliffs, and later we learned that it’s at the center of gunshot incident in the P section of Palm Coast. “Don’t just jump over the ball,” Hailey said to a birdlike creature she was trying to catch on her screen.

Black America, Black T.V., Black Awards programs, etc. Affirmative Action takes the equal out of equality, and the Sharptons and Jacksons need victims to keep them relevant. Even our current President’s first book only talks about black “needs,” not accomplishments. He also planted the blacks against cops idea with his beer summit scheme, and the op-ed of July 14th has aleady convicted the cops of the shootings because of race. I admit the videos don’t look good, but I don’t have all the evidence. Neither does the writer of the op-ed. Let’s let the Justice Department do its job and get back to being equal Americans. I admit I was growing curious. “So, what exactly happens at a Gym?” I asked. Hailey didn’t know. Our eyes met. We knew what we had to do. With Hailey’s Pokemon avatar as navigator, we were led to City Marketplace, where the fountain in front of Cue Note Billiards is a Gym. “Uh, oh,” she said. “This is a Level 2 Gym. I’m not sure I can do that.” But she forged on, battling Pokemon as though her life depended on it. She was losing badly, and she said, “Where

‘They will be back to the same problem’ I couldn’t disagree with you more about the Flagler Chamber! What the Flagler Chamber has proposed is a shortterm solution to a long-term problem. What happens when they run out of the sale money? They will be back to the same long-term problem, cash flow. The reason they have lost flow in recent years is poor marketing representatives in charge of the phone book advertising (I know, I dealt with them). An aggressive marketing person could bring the phone book back to a money maker. Other issues also have created problems for the chamber such as charging for just about every event they sponsor, and poor response to member’s requests (again, I have had personal experience in that regard). Dick Morris and Dick Quello along with board members

are my kids when I need them? I don’t know what I’m doing! I’m just dying!” “Uh huh,” I said, secretly typing away on my own phone. “Wait,” she said. “Are you writing a column about this right now?” “Maybe.” (We all have our little amusements, right?) We felt a bit silly as we left the City Marketplace parking lot — until we noticed a pickup truck with two men inside swiping at their own phones. Apparently no one is too proud for this game. Maybe not even me.

ON FACEBOOK A comment posted to Facebook on the story about kids being shot at while playing “Pokemon Go”: “So let me get this straight, a man discharged a weapon at a car because he heard, ‘Did you get anything?’ ... This is satire, correct? I am just trying to understand how something so serious as discharging a firearm is acceptable because ‘Did you get anything?’ was heard.”

Palm Coast: ‘Dallas, we hurt with you’ Hundreds of local residents gathered at the Elks Lodge for a candlelight vigil in honor of the five slain Dallas police officers. JEFF DAWSEY STAFF WRITER

208647

“They didn’t run from the fear; they ran to it.” These words of courage from Bill Gallagher describe the five men — Dallas Police officers — who lost their lives in the line of duty this past week. To show their support, members of the Palm Coast Elks Lodge No. 2709, along with hundreds of local residents, held a candlelight vigil to honor those men Thursday, July 14, at the 9/11 memorial monument, located in front of the Lodge. “Many of our members are first responders—retired policemen and firefighters,” said Mark Fon-

tana, the Lodge’s Publicity Chairman. “I believe respect for our first responders is of the utmost importance. And we wanted to come together to mourn. That’s what you do to build community.” Officers Brent Thompson, Patrick Zamarripa, Michael Krol, Michael Smith and Lorne Ahrens were murdered by a sniper during a march to protest the fatal shootings of black men in Minnesota and Louisiana by police. “That was a terrible thing; I just don’t understand it,” said Gallagher, president of the Flagler County Blue Knights. “The only solace the cops have is that they know these five guys were murdered by a man who had no guts. They were going to protect people that may not have liked them, but they didn’t care about that. That shows you a real cop’s heart.” Memorial services have been held all around the country since the attack, as a means to unite communities. “I’m just very sad and brokenhearted by the whole thing,” said Diane Gleissner, the past president of Ladies Auxiliary and wife of Fred, a former firefighter. “I believe we’re all one. I don’t want anybody to be left behind.” It is apparent that this country is suffering from racial tensions, and no resolution seems to be in sight. Gleissner voiced her concerns over the matter, saying, “We need to find solutions, big time,” I don’t know what they are, but I’d love to just go into neighborhoods and squeeze people up and say, ‘Let’s fix this.’ We need people with really good ideas to do that, and I’m praying we get that.”

EVALUATING JIM LANDON City Council members Heidi Shipley, Jason DeLorenzo, and Bill McGuire voted against a 2.9% raise in a split vote. BRIAN MCMILLAN EXECUTIVE EDITOR

T

he Palm Coast City Council members believe City Manager Jim Landon is a skilled negotiator who carries out their wishes effectively and that he “earns his salary,” but he won’t be getting a raise that was recommended by the Human Resources Department. The council voted 3-2 against a raise in a rare split vote. In a formal evaluation made public on July 15, he was given a score of 3.5 out of 5, meaning he falls between the categories of “meets expecations” and “exceeds expectations.” At least some believe he needs to be more receptive to their ideas and that he needs to be less negative toward Flagler County government. Politics also played a role: City Council member Steve Nobile admitted that by supporting the raise (Nobile and Mayor Jon Netts voted “yes”), he would get lots of “flak” from residents who feel Landon is already overpaid.

restructuring the departments to become more efficient during the Recession. The council also praised his planning ability and his savvy with regard to capital projects. He holds his staff accountable and has dedication, knowledge and commitment.

City Council member Jason DeLorenzo, who is resigning to run for County Commission, did not support the raise, saying Landon’s “current salary is in the appropriate range” for a manager of a city the size of Palm Coast. Heidi Shipley and Bill McGuire agreed with DeLorenzo, although McGuire said it was a difficult decision and that Landon is a man he “admires and respects.” Landon was hired on Feb. 1, 2007. The raise would have increased his salary by 2.9%, up from $168,878 to $173,790.60 per year. In a move that he admitted was uncomfortable for him, the normally private Landon spoke up for himself and his record at the meeting before the vote and indicated that he felt he had earned the raise. “To find someone with my background and my experience for what I make won’t be easy for you,” he said, referring to his 25 years as a city manager in this and other cities. He noted that he had never been fired from a job, which is also rare for a city manager. He said Palm Coast has a low tax rate and yet is a “premier organization” that has garnered state and national accolades. He also indicated that he could have continued to “climb the ladder” and moved on to a bigger city but chose not to, but “that doens’t

mean that, ‘Well, I should keep the same compensation forever.’” He said the times for withholding pay raises “are behind us,” given the improving economy, and indeed other staff members are getting raises. It’s typical for all employees of the city who are meeting expectations to get a 2% raise. “To say I’m doing a good job or meeting expectations, but, ‘No, you don’t get a pay raise’ — that’s just not how the workplace works,” he said. “How do you treat your employee, is the position you’re in right now.” TOP MARKS: PERSONAL ACCOMPLISHMENTS

The lowest score by any individual was given by Jason DeLorenzo. He gave Landon a score of 2.73 out of 5 with regard to “external relations,” which includes Landon’s relationship with Flagler County. Another of the responses to the external relations section sums up what some might perceive as perhaps his biggest weakness: “There is a desire of council for the city manager to be more proactive in his communication with the public, including reminding the public that although he is the ‘leader’ of the city, he implements policy as directed by council.” Overall, Landon received a score of 3.1 out of 5 in this section, with DeLorenzo, Netts and Steven Nobile all giving their lowest scores. Heidi Shipley gave a score of 3.27. COMMUNITY PERCEPTION

Of the four members of the City Council who participated in the evaluation process (McGuire did not participate), Netts has known Landon the longest, and he also gave Landon the highest scores in each of the four sections of the evaluation. Among Landon’s accomplishments are overseeing the construction of City Hall and

At least one member of City Council concluded that “the perception of citizens is poor, with the exception of the citizens that are engaged.” Several members of the community who frequently attend City Council meetings spoke up in Landon’s favor July 19, saying he should get the raise.

POLICY-MAKING ROLE

Although the City Council is generally “pleased with the information provided to them in order to make decisions … there are some that believe that they are not provided with all options available to them.” Shipley in particular was not pleased with Landon in this regard, writing, “I feel he moves forward based on what his thoughts and ideas are and (is) not always receptive to new... ideas.” Shipley added: “Anything I campaigned on, I need to acheive. We answer to 80,000 residents who voted for us for a reason.” Also, the City Council wants Landon to be “more positive about council’s involvement in day-to-day operations and support new ideas.” That statement could be seen to disagree with the City Charter’s “noninterference” clause (5.11), which states: “Except for the purpose of inquiry and information, the council and its members … are expressly prohibited from interfering with the performance of the duties of any city employee who is under the direct or indirect supervision of the city manager or city attorney.” Some people cited that clause last year in the push for a formal review of the City Charter by a committee of citizens. No formal review was taken. ‘EARNS HIS SALARY’

At least one City Council member wrote that Landon “works hard and earns his salary,” but that a raise is not justified. Others expressed confidence that “he will continue to make sound decisions to improve customer service for citizens and businesses.”

Bear spotted on Palm Coast Parkway The Sheriff’s Office also reports that it had been dealing with calls about a bear in the R-section. BRIAN MCMILLAN EXECUTIVE EDITOR

A Facebook photo of a bear on Palm Coast Parkway went viral in Palm Coast on July 14. Kristina K Cardone posted the image to Swip~Swap~Palm Coast, saying the photo was taken at St. Joe Plaza. The Sheriff’s Office said this morning that reports had come in overnight about a bear in the R-section, and spokesman Jim Troiano said it’s not unusual, especially at this time of year, for bears to roam through the city. Their typical range can be 20 or 30 miles wide. The most important advice for residents is to never feed

the bears because they could then become a nuisance. “Then, they’ll have to be removed, and that takes a trapper, and it can become a dangerous situation,” he said. In general, there is no need to call the Sheriff’s Office to report a sighting — only if the bear is doing something out of the ordinary and “being a naughty bear.” “If they come to your home time and time again, or if there’s a bear on your doorstep and you’re afraid to go in, call us,” Troiano said. Many comments on Facebook speculated that development disrupts bears’ habitat, and that’s why they could be moving through residential areas. Troiano said there is some truth to that.

One Common Ground: Flagler community leaders seek to prevent racial tensions Sheriff Jim Manfre: ‘We are not an occupying force. We are your neighbors, fathers, mothers, sisters, brothers and children.’ Flagler County Sheriff James L. Manfre welcomed area pastors, high school students, School Board officials and community members July 14 to the new Flagler County Inmate Facility as part of the agency’s fourth “One Common Ground” meeting. Citing recent weeks of violence in Orlando and nationally, Manfre and local leaders discussed the need to cooperate and communicate. “We have to acknowledge we have issues before we can solve them,” Manfre said to the audience. Following the recent shootings in Louisiana, Minnesota and then Dallas, Manfre said, “Cooler heads must prevail, and I believe they always will. Fear leads to hate and hate leads to violence. Tragedy is a true tragedy if you don’t learn from it.” Manfre said communityoriented policing is designed to build relationships. “We are not an occupying force,” he said. “We are your

neighbors, fathers, mothers, sisters, brothers and children.” One idea for building relationships includes area churches inviting law enforcement officers to visit their congregations. During the meeting, Bunnell Police Chief Tom Foster and Flagler Schools Superintendent Jacob Oliva each explained the challenges they have to attract and keep black employees and emphasized the importance of partnering with the faith-based

community. Linda Sharpe Matthews is the president of the Flagler County NAACP branch, and her husband was killed in the line of duty as a Florida Highway Patrol trooper in 2004. She said, “We’re not anti-police. We’re anti-violence. When we protest, we’re not protesting the Bunnell Police or Flagler County Sheriff’s Office. We’re protesting for equal rights.” The One Common Ground concept began following racial unrest and tensions in many areas of the country last summer, to discuss how local officials would address the potential of the Confederate battle flag being brought onto campuses on the first day of public school. The first meeting in Flagler County was held on Aug. 11, 2015, at First Baptist Church in Bunnell. Efforts identified at the meeting were put into place and issues at school were handled without incident.

Three shots fired at suspicious teen’s car. Turns out he was just playing 'Pokemon Go'

BRIEFS Flagler Schools budget and tax meeting scheduled for Tuesday, July 26

No injuries reported. And, fortunately, the teen and his friend caught two Pokemon.

The Flagler County School District is facing its lowest millage rate in the past 22 years. Tom Tant, Chief Financial officer for the school district, told the school board Flagler Schools is the 65th school district out of 67 in millage rates, with the lowest dollar per student. “For every dollar we only get 95 cents back,” Tant said. “We lost $7 per student.” The school district is considering a 1.50 mill property tax for capital outlay projects. The tax would be in addition to the school board’s proposed tax of 5.445 mills for operating expenses. A public budget hearing is scheduled for 5:15 p.m.,Tuesday, July 26, in the board chambers at the Government Services Building, 1769 E. Moody Blvd.

“Pokemon Go” is all fun and games — until someone tries to shoot you. According to Flagler County Sheriff’s spokesman Jim Troiano, Michael Jason Pagliro, 39, of 41 Primrose Lane, stated that he heard a noise outside his home at about 1:30 a.m. July 16. He armed himself with a handgun and went to investigate. The man said a white car was parked in front of his house with its brake lights on. He heard someone say, “Did you get anything?” So, the homeowner stepped in front of the car and ordered it not to move. The car moved toward him, so he shot at the car before it sped away. Later that morning, the parents of a 19-year-old called the Sheriff’s Office to tell the rest of the story. The young man and his 16-year-old friend were playing “Pokemon Go.” When they said, “Did you get anything?” they were referring to Pokemon. The young men returned home, and in the morning saw that there were

three bullet marks in the car: one in the rear tire, hubcap and fender. Good news: No one was injured. More good news: The two young men were successful in catching two Pokemon, Tauros and Marowak. Unfortunately for Pagliro, the incident may result in criminal charges. The report from the Sheriff’s Office cites discharging a firearm in public, and an email said that charges are expected. Pagliro’s gun, a Bersa Thunder .380 semi-automatic pistol, was seized as evidence. “Pokemon Go” is a new video game that can be downloaded for free on mobile devices. To play

the game, you keep your eyes on your screen, and try to catch little monsters called Pokemon as they pop up on your screen. One of the first screens in the game is a warning: “Remember to be alert at all times. Stay aware of your surroundings.” There have been news stories about various accidents occuring as a result of a failure to follow this advice, including two men falling off a cliff in California. The game has become an international sensation. Heavy.com reported that, with about 21 million downloads, it is the “biggest mobile game in U.S. history.”

SAFETY TIPS FOR ‘POKEMON GO’ The Flagler County Sheriff’s Office provided these safety tips regarding “Pokemon Go”: n Homeowners: Call 911 immediately when you suspect someone is trying to break into your home. n ‘Pokémon Go’ Hunters: Watch where you are going. Take a friend. n Parents of ‘Pokémon Go’ Hunters: Talk to your kids about strangers and set limits on where your kids can go.

Graduate 100 committee survey The Graduate 100 Committee presented its initial findings during a workshop on Tuesday night: n 97% of students felt that school and earning a high school diploma were important. n 90% had set goals for their future, and 80% said college was important to them n Most students surveyed didn’t seem to view themselves as “potential dropouts” because they had post-school goals requiring further education.

‘It’s our time’ Palm Coast All-Stars 14U reach the state tournament for the first time. JEFF DAWSEY SPORTS EDITOR

T

he Palm Coast Junior All-Stars were excited to advance to the Little League State Championship Tournament this past weekend, winning the Section 3 title. They felt even better beating Baker County to do so. Two years ago, in the same position, the PCLL All-Stars were blown out by Baker County, who eliminated them in sectionals. PCLL is currently made up of those same kids who experienced that loss. “This is probably this group’s most meaningful win,” said coach Raul Hernandez. “What makes this work is the level of commitment from the kids, the parents and the coaches. We couldn’t do this without everyone’s support.” For the most part, the All-Stars have cruised to this moment, except a slight scare in the section final. They won an automatic bid to sectionals, due to there being no other district opponents, and they opened the sectional tournament with a 12-1 victory. The most nervous they have felt was when they were up 6-5 in the final.

PCLL returns to the state tournament for the second straight year; its 12U All-Stars won the program’s first ever Section 3 championship last season. Included on this team are Donnie Little and Alex Machado, who played on last year’s state tournament team. They are both anticipating the weekend experience in a hotel, and they want to do better than last year’s team, which didn’t win any of its pool games. The All-Stars will play three pool games, and, determined by their record, they will either move on or be eliminated. “Our kids are die-hard baseball players,” Hernandez added. “They want to be out here. This is what they live and breathe. So, for them to accomplish this is gratifying, and it’s gratifying for me to see them enjoy it.”

IF YOU GO… The PCLL AllStars will kick off their Little League State Championship Tournament at 7:30 p.m. Friday, July 22, at Azalea Park in Orlando. The park is located at 1 Carol Ave.

BEST BIRTHDAY EVER! Anthony Hernandez, on his birthday this past Saturday, pitched a complete game in the All-Stars’ 12-1, and he and his team went on to become the second PCLL team to reach the Little League State Tournament. Hernandez then went home and ate chocolate cake with vanilla ice cream.

The Palm Coast Junior All-Stars are just the second but consecutive PCLL team to win its sectional championship and advance to the state tournament.

he Flagler Bandits and Ormond Spikes 12U teams just returned from a weeklong tournament in Cooperstown, New York. Though the experience alone would’ve made for unforgettable moments, both teams created historic memories on the field. The Spikes took 14 players, three coaches and 46 friends and family members up north. They played teams from around the country and finished 17th out of 104 teams, going 5-3. The team hit 16 total home runs, and two grand slams, one each by Robert Doeing and Canyon Brown. Evan Koehler pitched a perfect game. Canyon Brown followed that performance by pitching a no-hitter. Bryce Barkalow struck out 22 batters in 12 innings. In order to reach Cooperstown, the Bandits and their parents spent the last two years hosting fundraisers of all kinds. Then they went to New York and knocked 19 balls out the park, also including two grand slams— from Austin Robinson and Carson Latham. Jaymes Pringle hit five homers, Robinson hit four, Latham had three and others had either one or two. These kids took the biggest stage they’ve ever stepped upon, and they performed at their highest level. Koehler’s perfect game is only the second in Cooperstown’s 20-year history of tournaments, and when Brown followed Koehler with a nohitter, they became one of only a few duos of pitchers to ever pitch back-to-back no hitters. For everyone who helped these ball teams make it to Cooperstown, the money was well spent. Some kids’ names will now be forever sketched in the record books, and others made good on the opportunity represent their cities well.

From Col. Sanders to Bruce Lee After successful surgery on his knees, George Alexander presented Dr. Malcolm Gottlich with an honorary black belt. “After having total knee replacements in both knees, I went from Colonel Sanders to Bruce Lee in one year.”

JEFF DAWSEY SPORTS EDITOR

DID YOU KNOW?

In 1991 George Alexander was inducted into the World Martial Arts Hall of Fame, and, in 1998 he was voted one of the World’s Top 100 Martial Artists by the International Martial Arts Federation. He also holds a Ph.D. in political science and Asian history and is a retired professor from the State University of New York.

GEORGE ALEXANDER

George Alexander demonstrates various karate techniques to students in the Bring you A Game program at Buddy Taylor Middle School.

Two years of chair yoga in New York didn’t help, and it was too late for stem cell treatment. It became more and more difficult for Alexander to even walk up and down stairs — let alone train in martial arts. Despite the pain, George continued to train and teach martial arts, keeping up the facade that he was fine, although his students knew better. Eventually the pain was too much and the arthritis too debilitating. After moving to Palm Coast and finding Dr. Gottlich, “all the planets lined up for me,” Alexan-

der said. Dt. Gottlich performed the necessary surgery, and Alexander has made a full recovery where he’s back to teaching Okinawan Karate, Jujutsu, Tai Chi and Qi Gung. “You would never know that I’m totally bionic,” Alexander said. “After having total knee replacements in both knees, I went from Colonel Sanders to Bruce Lee in one year. I can’t thank Dr. Gottlich enough for giving me a second chance to pursue the athletic lifestyle I love.”

How do you thank and honor a doctor, who affords you a second life in Martial Arts? If you’re world renowned 10th-degree black belt George Alexander, you present that doctor, namely Malcolm Gottlich, with an honorary black belt, from the International Karate Association. After decades of competing and training at the highest martial arts level, Alexander developed osteoarthritis in both knees. Like many mature athletes, the years of wear-and-tear has broken down the cartilage, and the knee joint functions bone-on-bone, causing his normal daily activities to become a lot more painful. While living in New York, Alexander tried various injections of synthetic material or “insertion of chicken guts,” as he calls it, but to no avail. “These treatments might be effective for some people,” he said, “but at my advanced stage of the disease, the injections were not beneficial.”

The camp is for kids ranging from kindergarten all the way up to rising seniors, and they will be assisted by PVHS players along with current and former Division I players and coaches. Throughout the two days, coaches will implement a system that has helped separate PVHS from its competitors. They will be covering a variety

of skills ranging from basic catching/throwing mechanics to high level dodging, defensive approach angles and more. Participants will need to bring their own full equipment. YOUR NEIGHBORS Frank’s Old World Secrets to Good Italian Cooking Palm Coast chef’s first cookbook makes it easy for anyone who loves cooking to be a gourmet. Frank Renda serves up Pasta and Lemon Sauce Shrimp, a new recipe not in his first book.

JACQUE ESTES STAFF WRITER

“T

he secret to cooking is you’ve got to love to cook,” Frank Renda said as he tested the pasta boiling on his stove. “If you don’t love to cook, put everything down and move out of the kitchen.” This is an interesting recommendation for a chef and author trying to sell his first Italian cookbook. As Renda removes the shrimp for the Pasta with Lemon Sauce and Shrimp he’s created from the oven, under the watchful eye of his new mini Pomeranian Grillo, he explained what makes his cookbook different. “It’s different because of the way I present it, and the steps I give you are very easy,” Renda said. “It’s a self-guide book. It’s so easy to follow and the ingredients aren’t crazy.” His second big secret for success in the kitchen involves using fresh ingredients. He grinds his own black pepper, grows some herbs in his backyard, and buys shrimp fresh from Hull’s Seafood Market and Restaurant in Ormond Beach. “If you use fresh ingredients, you’ll never have a bad meal,” he said. A Sicilian-born transplant from New York, he moved to the U.S. when he was 2 years old, and started cooking when he and his wife had medical issues at the same time. His wife Lucinda, who he describes as having been “an exceptional, great cook,” and his grandmother, mother and aunts, did all the cooking. “I never cooked in my life. I didn’t have to, I was the man,” he laughed. He did pay attention to the activity in the kitchen when the women in his life were cooking. “I have a photographic memory and I used to watch,” he said. “I remembered all these recipes, and then, when we both got sick I asked, ‘What are we going to have, sandwiches?’” The hardback book’s table of contents makes you want to be a cook. Renda said many of his ideas for new creations come to him during his daily walk, which varies from six to 10 miles. Renda has made each recipe himself, and tried them out on his friends. Friends have suggested he open a restaurant, but the cookbook satisfies his desire to share his creations. “This is my forte and I want to share it with everybody,” Renda said. Brody the pit bull helps Flagler Humane Society capture runaway Buck THINGS TO KNOW BEFORE ADOPTING A DOG OR CAT n Are their vaccinations up to date? You should be given a copy of their medical records at the time of adoption. n Do they get along with other animals? Most shelters allow a “get acquainted” time with the dog you are considering. n Are they spayed or neutered? All humane societies are required by the State of Florida to spay and neuter dogs and cats prior to adoption. n Puppies and kittens may need booster vaccines. Know when these are due, and get them. Half a vaccine is not effective. n Typically, adoption facilities do not know a lot about the animal’s background. Take time to get to know the animal before you adopt.

Fight fire with fire – catch dogs with dogs?

I

t’s happened to most pet owners. A door is left open, a fence is jumped, or a leash is pulled out of hands, and the dog that was once contained is off and running. Such was the case a couple of weeks ago when Buck, a hound mix, found just the right moment to get away from the Flagler Humane Society volunteer holding his leash at PetSmart. The FHS was at the pet supply store, as they often are, getting dogs and cats more exposure and hopefully homes. Apparently Buck thought he could do better on his own. For days the shelter staff, animal control, volunteers, and people, like Jennifer Popowich,

who saw the notice of the missing dog on Facebook, searched. “We live near where he got away, so when we were out or when I was going to work, I would keep an eye out for him,” Popowich said. A notice on Facebook saying he had been spotted near some woods prompted Popowich to get in the car with her kids and her adopted pit bull, Brody. “We held back and watched,” she said. “It looked like they were going to get him so I left Brody in the car.” But Buck wasn’t interested in the hot dogs or even the poodle who stopped by – so with a leash in each hand (one around Brody), Popowich walked toward the woods. “In two seconds he was sniffing Brody,” Popowich said. While the two new pals were getting to know each other Popowich slipped the extra leash over Buck’s head. “Brody is my breed ambassador dog,” she laughed. “He is proof that pit bulls are amazing.” At last check, Buck is still available for adoption at FHS. He obviously gets along well with other dogs, and would like a home where he can run.

Catherine Wilson, right, and her family.

Flagler Beach Historical Museum honors its founder, Catherine Wilson Honoree has been involved in just about everything in Flagler Beach since 1956. Friends and admirers gathered at the Flagler Beach Women’s Club to honor Catherine P. Wickline Wilson for her 15 years of leadership at the Flagler Beach Historical Museum on Saturday, July 16. Wilson is the daughter of George E. Wickline and the granddaughter of A.V. and Etta Wickline. In 1956 she moved to Flagler Beach with her husband, Bernie Wilson, and their daughters, JoAnne and Barbara Revels (Flagler County Commissioner). The idea for the museum began with tables of historic items, and pictures displayed on the walls, in the Flagler Beach City Hall Commission Room on Friday mornings. The response was great and soon people began donating historical items from their families. “As volunteers began the cataloguing, we realized that we needed to find space for a real museum,” Wilson said. “We

elected a Board of Directors and their work began to find funding for this project.” The small group visited several other museums in and out of the State, for a plan for the best layout for the space in Flagler Beach. The Tourist Development Council helped fund the renovation after the City of Flagler Beach gave permission to use the former area used by the fire department. Wilson is an author, having written “A New Beginning: A Picturesque History of Flagler Beach,” in 1998. She has also been honored as a Flagler Beach Rotary Citizen of the Year. She retired after 25 years with Barnett Bank. Her community involvement through the years has included president of the Flagler Beach School PTA, president of Flagler Beach Volunteer Fire Dept. Auxiliary, president of the Flagler Beach United Methodist Church Women’s Society, director of the church choir, chairman of the Flagler Beach Recreation Committee, a charter member of the Flagler County Music Society, and a member of the Flagler County Historical Society.

In an example of how much detail is included in the weekly report, you will appreciate this note as well: “Restroom door hardware installed.”

A new restaurant called 5th Element Indian Cuisine is listed as a new business in the city of Palm Coast’s Week in Review. It’s at 101 Palm Harbor Parkway. Two other new businesses were listed: Matok Realty & Management Inc., 4867 Palm Coast Parkway, real estate broker; and MPower Fitness, 3 Boulder Rock Drive, health studio.

Two permits, including one for $1.2 million, were pulled for Race Trac Convenience Store and Gas Station. The construction company is Auld & White Constructors, who are working on the project at 5893 State Road 100 E.

A $389,000 permit was issued to Bellagio Custom Homes for a single-family home at 40 Cherokee Court W. That was the most expensive home of the eight that were approved for construction. Paytas Homes also pulled permits for three of the eight.
