why we build

Every neighborhood’s revitalization needs are different. It is important for residents to identify these needs and work with partners to build a plan. We see our role as a “spoke in the wheel” addressing housing affordability and conditions while working with other partners to address all quality-of-life elements like amenities, economic opportunities, education, health, safety, and transportation.

Neighborhood Focus

“Residents know best the hopes and dreams of their community. Building trust and relationships with them, to help them achieve their goals, is the most important aspect of successful neighborhood revitalization.”

Michael McIntyre, Executive Director Maumee Valley Habitat for Humanity

Additionally, in 2022, we began to strategically align our focus with the City of Toledo’s Neighborhood Revitalization Strategic Areas (NRSA) of East Toledo, Englewood, Junction, and South Toledo. This alignment has helped us leverage additional investment and create a larger impact for Toledo neighborhoods.

2022 Major Revitalization Partners

Congresswoman Marcy Kaptur, Lucas Metropolitan Housing, City of Toledo, Lucas County Land Bank, Toledo Design Collective, Ohio Department of Health, Cleveland-Cliffs, Toledo Refining Company, Owens Corning, ProMedica, Fifth Third Bank, Junction Coalition, Historic South Initiative, One Voice, and East Toledo Family Center.

Rock the Blocks are an extension of our neighborhood revitalization efforts. Hundreds of volunteers gather on one day to complete projects like park clean-up, tire removal, brush trimming, flower planting, and light exterior repairs. These events bring people together to lift up neighborhoods and celebrate a community.

In 2022, we completed three Rock the Blocks and added a free “Block Party” after each event that included food, fun, and community resources that included housing, banking, employment, education, worship, and arts.
