Lion Awakening Ceremony - Maui Ryukyu Culture Group will present a lion awakening ceremony, welcoming one of only three lions to ever be constructed in Hawaii—this being Maui’s first! Okinawan culture holds deep attachment to the symbolism of the “shisaa,” or lion, and this ceremony—presided over by a woman chosen as the spiritual leader—will give the first breath of life to the spirit of the lion before dancers enter the costume.
