DISCOVERING A NEW SPORT... Ferbuary was an awesome month for me, not only because I had some feeling that I never felt before, but because for the first time in four years I took a real time vacation. I felt like everything was so far away when I was on the mountain... anyway at first I was in Guadeloupe the first 13 days of February. It was the routine there: surf, running... just stay in shape.

Then with my mom, little bro and a cousin we went in the Alpes d’Huez, which is a pretty big ski resort in France. As we never done that before and got pretty lucky with a good snow almost the whole week, we were just riding all day long. My bro already snowboarded a couple times before, and my first time in Oregon last year was not a success, but it took us only a couple runs to figure it out and do some offroad in the poudre. After riding 7H a day for a couple days we knew where to go to find the best offroad possible, and we found some amazing descent in the poudre. To be honest, it was the best feeling of my life trying a new sport. I still dream about it :) After this week I spent just one week traveling around France to see all my friends from Guadeloupe who live there now. Now I’m back in Guadeloupe to prepare the photoshoot season and will be in Maui on March 23 for some new action :) Stay tuned. Camille Juban

WHAT’S NEW FOR 2015 Wave sail development at the MauiSails loft means that we focus on creating dream tools for maximizing performance and enjoyment on the water. MauiSails development is fueled by our own passion and daily ritual to the wind and waves rather than some corporate marketing department. This means that we design and build pure, undiluted, uncompromised, performance sails with the most technical, high quality materials. We believe that anyone passionate about windsurfing can appreciate these qualities. We are working on some exciting developments for the 2015 wave sail line up, including the use of our new custom, light weight metallic scrim laminate material. Here is a sample of some of the progress on a few of our sail lines.

The Mutant has proven itself as the ultimate performance and competition wave sail over the past 2 seasons and we are expanding the range with a few new sizes and also some noticeable shaping improvements to boost performance and range even further. We are also releasing a new edition GHOST CS line in which we have pulled out all our tricks, building a production sail that is built like the most sophisticated custom sail with maximum usage of the highest quality Technora scrim laminate and zero grams of fat. We will also be introducing our exciting new 3 batten wave riding performance sail, the “EPIC”. We have some shaping secrets that are sure to make this sail a performance standout. Look forward to more details over the next couple months. Aloha, Artur Szpunar

PHOTOSHOT ON BONAIRE My Friends, As time passed by so quick it’s already the end of another month and the beginning of a new one. Just by the end of January and the beginning February I flew to St Barths to take part in the 3rd edition of the St Barth fun cup and finished 2nd. By competing on a borrowed TR-8 8.4 and 7.6 and my 2013 isonic 110 while all the other guys where on their already new 2014 gears, so I might have been doing fine to finish 2nd :),. (editors note... FINE! That’s kick ASS!) Right after the St Barth I flew back to Bonaire straight away as Starboard finally decided to do the photoshoot on Bonaire for the Slalom, Freeride and freestyle boards and we just had the perfect weather the whole five days of the shoot. I really can’t wait to see how all the photo’s that John Carter did will come out once they are in the magazine and starboard brochure. AMAZING for sure!!! :). During the photo shoot I was two days on Loco Pro 5.2, 2 days with Loco Pro 4.8 for freestyle. Then TR-9 7.0 for free ride and slalom. just perfect. We also did a little travel story on Bonaire that will go out in the magazine late may together with my cousin Kiri Thode.

Just at the end of the last day of the photo shoot, the wind was howling and I was getting set to do a move, and while ducking the sail for a burner the sail fell down and while I was still stuck in the foot strap and my body went forward. I twisted my right ankle a bit. I think it was just the tendon. Walking was a bit hard for the first few days. Lots of ice and some creak got it better. As windsurfing was not an option, staying home and relax the foot , and three times a week in the gym was the best thing I could do. But it’s all good. I spent most of the weeks after in the fitness room with my personal trainer. I would say February was more then a recovery month for me. As we move in March, I will get back to you guys shortly all the best. Regards Taty Frans NB-9 :)

GEAR SELECTION Well February was another slow month in Maui. I was expecting to really start to ramp up my race training and tuning on my new TR-X’s and my JP slaloms but again the wind did not come very often and when it did it was still on the light side. I did manage to get a few days in on the water, some on wave gear but it didn’t really pan out to well as you can see in the photo of me and Hanoi. Race gear was working out better though and I am getting more and more dialed in on tuning set ups and combinations for the upcoming season. I am really liking the new sizing changes we made to the TR-X, even though they are small the 7.7 and the 9.3 are going to fit much better in my quiver of 6 sails and 3 boards. I will take the same as last year with the 6.3, 6.6, 7.0 and 8.4 rounding out the six sails. JP board sizes will stay the same as well with the 59 as my smallest, 66 medium and 80 largest. The sails and boards seem to be working much better together this year as well. The 9.3 and 8.4 are fitting perfectly on my 80 wide board with fins ranging from 45 to 48cm. The 7.7 fits perfectly on the 66 wide board with fins ranging from 35 to 39, the 7.0 also seems to work quite well on the 66 this year, much better than last year. Then the 59 wide board perfect for the 6.6 and 7.0 and then just put the track forward put the magic small fin in and hold on for the 6.3 conditions. Who knows we may even get to race on this gear this year. Anyway it is about that time of year again where the trades start to come back more regularly and I start putting in the hours to get ready for this years racing. Since Margarita was cancelled I have more time to get ready for the first race event in Korea in May. Aloha Micah Buzianis USA34

FEB ON MAUI This February it was great to be back on Maui and get a few days on the water as we gear up for spring! The month started off with the longest trip of my life, 61 hours from Cape Town back to Maui. After only 24hrs on Maui it was off to Oahu for the first stop of the SUP world tour at Turtle Bay. I went to support my girlfriend, Sarah Delaunay, who did amazing at her first ever world tour stop, making it through a few rounds in the pro women’s division before stopping at the quarter finals. But after a few days on Oahu camping in the rental car, it was nice to finally be home for good and back on Maui! Just after we got back, out of nowhere we had one of the best days of the season! A perfect North swell with winds just strong enough to be sailable rolled through one weekday afternoon. It was a gamble, some guys took out SUP, others surf, and about 8 of us windsurf gear. Armed with my 5.1 Mutant, I did laps for 2 hours at Hookipa, picking up smooth glassy wave after smooth glassy wave, with smiles from ear-ear. My foot was still hurting pretty badly from Cape Town, but it was ok in the bottom turns, which was good enough for me! I’m always blown away with the 5.1 Mutant in such light winds. It’s got enough power to motor you around, and on the wave it’s so light, and drops so effortlessly when you go for a bottom turn, it feels great!

We had a couple more good days mixed in with onshore winds and rain, a sign hopefully that the trades are starting to materialize and get ready for what we all hope to be a solid spring! I’m looking forward to March to try out some new surprises from the loft, so stay tuned! Cya on the water, Casey Hauser US-634

THE SHORT MONTH WITH LOTS GOING ON Rain. Wind from the odd directions. More rain.

This time of the year is when all the new ideas for wave sails and freestyle get put into the works. Taty has become very much disciplined to reporting his desires in a seize by size, and specific methodology. This is giving us the best basis yet for making the fine adjustments to the sizes based on how they are really being used at the highest level. And Art keeps on pushing the limits with the new idea wave sails, and meanwhile people seem to be figuring out the Mutants quite well. From what I see, the core of this idea, which is still pretty radical by any measure even after several seasons, is what the best wave sailors like and respond to. The results in last year’s AWT tour proved that in every class, no exceptions. Tight, compact outlines are best in tight situations, and when the balance and tension is correct, the reward is positive power and exceptional wave riding. GO Art! February was big for Cornelia. Samantha has healed enough for her to get aboard again with a little help, and we got her out sailing twice. She has some getting used to things to go still, but basically her arm is now up to her to rehab. All healed well, and we can be thankful for the skill of Dr. Patrick Murray in Oahu. It was a unique injury that required unique surgical approach. And now it’s better. We were able to meet up with Michelle Stadler and her boyfriend, Max for an easy day with lots of whales. Michelle’s father, Robert, and brother, Michael, have been coming to Maui for many years from Munich to sail the month of August. It was fun to be able to get the kids out for the day. When we were at the slip, friends came on board with their Kelpie, ClareBelle. She and Rosie play together like they were still on the farm back in W.A. and if nothing else, it’s fun to watch. Both dogs are happy sailors and seem to enjoy being afloat. Aloha Barry Spanier
