remoteness - distance - visibility Two different places in relations to dale to investigate the remoteness of a place. To see what it means to be seen, but not visited. To be seen from different distances, to be noticed in different relationships and to be understood in different contexts. There is a farm called Fossvika (b) close to the Theeth Island (a), one is visible from the city center of Dale, the second not - only from the western part, many people in the village didnt even know about this island. The farm is hard to see from the village, but easy to see from the island, but in this angle - the buildings look different. Dale might seem to be a remote place for some, but how remote are these two places then?

The Teeth Island

(elevation)

The Teeth island is about 100 by 200 meters wide and is located in the northern most part of Dalsfjorden. It has these very specific teeth like shaes carved by icebergs 400 mil. years ago. It is a very low island surrounded by huge mountains of the fjord.

The Teeth Island as seen from Dale (elevation)

The Teeth Island is seen only from the west side of Dale and even there it is very hard to recognize its shapes and almost impossible to notice for someone who doesn’t know about it. It is an invisible island for some.

island spaces

(model photos)

The Teeth Island is assabled from just few different shapes which are repeated in different combinations. The two main shapes are a vally(a) and a ridge(b). These are creating the typical teeth shapes of the island. The third module used is a hill side, it is a very special place with the only human footprint on the island - an ohniště(c) (czech word for an open outdoor fireplace).

ohniště

(model photo)

Ohniště is historically one of the first gathering points and had a very important social and practical role in a comunity. Also, in the time of ancient mammoth hunters, fire was a key element of survival. The best warriors of the group were responsible for keeping the fire alive, because when it was lost, the group could die very fast. Therefore it is interesting to analyze the place, where these people decided to create their ohniště. It is usually also the place most suitable fot dwelling as it has to be shelterd from the wind, high water and often eyesight. 61°22’57,51” N 5°24’30,44” E

With these three simple shapes, it is possible to make almost all of the island’s spaces and fully explore its potentials. Sometimes shapes, that seem to be complicated at the first sight, are actually just combinations of very basic volumes.

part b Fossvika - Vertical Farm

Fossvika as seen from the Teeth Island (photo)

Fossvika is a small farm hanging on a cliff just above the sea level. It is the closest dwelling from the Teeth Island and even though it is on the main land, it is still at least as remote as the island. This remoteness doesn’t really allow anybody to get a closer look at the houses and from the distance, they seem to be so small. Therefore are the models made in the size, how normal people encounter them.

Fossvika as seen from Dale(photo) By zooming in from a far remote place, we try to see the buildings better, but it’s actually only worse. The closer we look the harder it is to recognize the building from its surroundings.

Fossvika compilation

(model photos)

This farm is an ordinary compilation of rather ordinary volumes. To understand better the relation between these houses, it is helpful to see different possible compositions.

connection

(plan)

There is no road leading to Fossvika, the only way to get there is by boat. It is like an island just divided by an ocean of mountain on one side instead of water. It is like all the roads would like to avoin Fossvika.

hill side

(section)

The houses are standing on each other, that’s how steep the hill is. It must be very stressful during the everyday life. Whatever you drop accidently will end in the water.

forest

(elevation)

There were many concerns, what could a farm on a place like this live from, while there are no fields around. They must sell wood from the dark forest next to the farm! It is probably also very easy as one doesn’t have to transport the wood from the farm, they cut the tree and it just falls on a boat right under it.

path

(elevation)

The only path in Fossvika is a small one connecting the farm with the water - the gate to the farm. Then the path goes somewhere to the left, who knows where, probably to the forest. It must be quite difficult to loose your way in this place.

roofless

(axonometry)

Because Fossvika is very far and remote, you can only see it very roughly and when there is snow on the hills, it almost looks like the houses had no roof as the snow cover blends with the surrounding snow.

interior

(axonometry)

Because of this strange feature of the Fossvika farm, it must be very cold inside during winter. It snows incide just like outside. The interior is wet and in the night it doesnt really get warm even around the fireplace. On the other hand.. you can see the beautiful night sky when the weather is good.
