A Note from our COO

The Difference One Man Can Make One man or woman truly can make a difference. I hear people use that cliché all the time, but my father and founder of The Association of Mature American Citizens, Dan Weber, has proven it to be true by example.

David

Five years ago I stood beside my father and watched the cynics take a good, hard look. I watched as they shook their heads, saying, “AARP is too big, Dan. AARP has too much influence. AMAC will never see a thousand members, let alone a million! Do you seriously believe you can compete with an organization like that?” My father calmly smiled back, as he so often does, and answered with confidence, “Yes, I do.” He continued sincerely, “People deserve better. They need an organization with the courage to stand up for the values upon which this country was built – values that are under constant attack. People deserve an organization that stands up for its members. Millions of Americans are just as fed up with AARP as I am, and I’m going to do something about that.” Then he turned to me and quietly said, “Dave, when it seems like you’re up against overwhelming odds, just remember David and Goliath.” My father, a man of true faith, sure has a way of putting things into perspective. Fast forward through five long years of lofty goals, purposeful work, and plenty of prayers; of proverbial blood, sweat, and yes, even a few tears. Those five years have been chock-full of hard work by extraordinary people dedicated to fighting the good fight for something they believe in, and countless extra-hour workdays and trips to the local deli to pick up fresh coffee to keep us going. Sprinkle in a few set-backs, a couple of heartbreaks, and maybe even a few sleepless nights and you’ll find that not only is AMAC still here, but AMAC is here to stay – not to prove those cynics wrong, but rather to do good for those who believe in us today and to ensure a brighter future for our children and grandchildren tomorrow. G. Weber Today AMAC is well on its way to enrolling a million members. Congressmen and women are turning to AMAC to find out where you – the very people from whom we take our marching orders –truly stand on the issues. And today, when AARP flexes their political muscle in Washington to promote an agenda that is not yours, AMAC is ever watchful and standing guard. AMAC sure has come a long way in five years, and under this beautiful summer sky, we’d like to pause for a moment to give thanks. We have so much for which to be thankful. First and foremost, we thank God for all of the blessings we have been given. We live in the greatest nation in the history of mankind. We are thankful for our freedom, for those who have made the ultimate sacrifice defending our freedom, and for those who continue to defend our freedom at this very moment. We are thankful for all of the good folks that are part of the AMAC family. Much of their work is done behind-thescenes and goes unnoticed by the public, but we recognize their efforts and accomplishments. These are people that work not just for AMAC, but also for you and for a better America. We are thankful for all of AMAC’s supporters and promoters for helping us get the word out; for the AMAC Ambassadors who volunteer their time to distribute our materials to their friends, families, and various local groups; for our Delegates who volunteer to call on their Congressional district offices and represent AMAC on the local level all across America. We are thankful for our favorite columnist, Jedediah Bila, for believing in us since the beginning. Heck, we’d even like to thank President Obama for bringing AARP into the Presidential debate last year. Though AARP tries to distance themselves from him now, The Wall Street Journal recently published an article containing seventy-one pages of emails between the White House and AARP executives that display just how powerful and far-reaching AARP’s influence in Washington truly is. We’ve been saying this for years. Hopefully, this will shed some light on the truth. Last, but certainly not least, we are thankful for each and every one of you. You give AMAC strength, purpose, and direction. You are a guiding light, and we serve you gratefully. If one man or woman can make as much of a difference as my father has over the past five years, just imagine what a million or more of us can do together over the next five. Please help us keep this momentum going! With heartfelt gratitude, David G. Weber Chief Operating Officer

The IRS Scandal Drives Need for Tax Reform 

Clayton Page says: We can hope it drives some kind of POSITIVE tax reform!

Charles Neel says: AMAC should advocate, educate, and help pass the FAIRTAX! Only the FAIRTAX eliminates the IRS and repeals the 16th amendment! A flat tax would be another “dog” -- we would still have the lobbyists and the corruption!

La Lenz says: We can no longer trust the IRS as it is......abolish this agency and start over......

Sam McGinty says: ...and soon, these people will decide your health care.

Hestand Horses says: If I conducted business like the IRS I would be in jail

John Burt Polhamus says: The INCOME TAX was unknown to the Founding Fathers. Plus, it’s how the taxes are collected, and whether the collection is fair. We’re getting taxed at every turn, by a code so byzantine and arcane that NO ONE understands or can negotiate it themselves. Abolish the illegal Income Tax, and institute a flat tax on all purchased items. That equalizes the tax structure right there. Simple...but simple is what Federalism fears.

Small Business Owners Fear the Affordable Care Act 

Shelley Merrill says: They should. It will destroy businesses of every size and prevent a lot of companies from hiring new workers to full time decent paying positions.

John Hartnett says: And they should be very worried. Not only those with 50 or more employees

6 | www.amac.us

but all businesses .... insurance rates will be going up for all business and individuals due to this fiasco. One other goodie .... an amendment includes a requirement to report ALL payments made to an outsider by a business no matter the amounts. Really loved that one.

AMAC Salutes the Youth of America for Heroic Deeds!

William LaSalle says: Hillarycare was too expensive and unconstitutional. Obamacare is no different. It discriminates against Christian Values and Unconstitutionally Federally Mandates how we spend our money and what medical treatment we receive.

AMAC Supports Repeal of Medicaid Expansion 

Robert Rush says: Thank you for representing senior working folks. AARP supported Obamacare and stood silent as DC raided the Medicare Trust for $716 billion to help fund Obamacare.

Vivis Smith says: Thank you for standing firm.

Mary Minshall says: AMAC is a ray of light at the end of a dark tunnel!

50 Worst Charities 

Theresa Kitchel says: This is what is wrong with our society. No moral compass.

Ernest Purcell says: Always know who you’re giving money to. There’s a lot of scammers out there making money with the words Veterans and First Responders in the title.

Henry Byler says: There are plenty of good places to donate money. If you are a church person, that is where you start. But, there are usually some good local charities that you can give to and even volunteer, so you can see what they do. Local food pantries rule!

Harold Feinberg says: Great story and yes a fine young lady very lucky to have known what to do.

William Petrosky says: There’s just not enough reporting of this kind. I think it takes tremendous courage to be a youngster today.

Richard Lohr says: WOW! What a story. Father’s Day is around the corner this month too! Those Farm girls get to share another Father’s Day with their Dad now! “Adrenaline” is amazing stuff. Praise God!

Billie Knapp says: This is heartwarming to say the least with all that is happening in this country and the world..........WTG young men......

Larry and Carol Fraioli say: So proud of our young heroes and would like to see them rewarded by their community and given nationwide news coverage by all stations! Thank you for your maturity and being such heroes for a 5 year old child who most certainly was being protected by “ANGELS”.....God Bless You and Keep You Safe as well!!!

Laurie Stuckey says: Thank GOD for people like this young boy and also for publishing this story... you NEVER hear anything when good things happen. Time for a new precedent; GOOD NEWS EVERY DAY!

Susan Prang says: This is the kind of stuff they need to show on every channel all day long for weeks and weeks!!! The negativity needs to stop!!

David Shampo says: Well done young men, well done.

The Medicare Annual Enrollment Period: October 15th – December 7th

T

he Annual Enrollment Period for Medicare Advantage Plans and Medicare Prescription Drug Plans is rapidly approaching. Many Medicare beneficiaries can become overwhelmed with all of the advertising on the TV, radio, and the amount of mailers they receive. With so many options, it is difficult to figure out which plan will best suit their needs. It is very important for beneficiaries to weigh all of their options so that they can make an educated choice. The plan chosen during this time period will be the coverage a beneficiary will have for the next year. During the Annual Enrollment Period, a beneficiary is allowed to add, drop or change their Medicare Advantage Plan and/or their Medicare Prescription Drug Plan. Medicare Advantage Plans and Medicare Prescription Drug Plans are guaranteed for one year at a time. It is essential for beneficiaries to review their current coverage because carriers can offer different plans in the following year, or discontinue plans altogether. If your plan is continuing, premium increases may occur. The Annual Enrollment Period is the time for beneficiaries to take advantage of the choices available to enhance their coverage. Some key factors to consider when reviewing Medicare Advantage Plans are: ■ What type of plan are you looking for? Are you looking for a plan with lower co-pays and premiums that has a specific doctor network? (HMO) Or does doctor choice better suit your needs where you may have higher co-pays, premiums or pay more to go out of network? (PPO)

by Diana Wisniewski

Are your doctors in network? It is important to know if your doctors are in the plan’s network. If they are not, you may have no coverage or pay more for these doctor visits. ■ What hospitals are in network? While you are able to go to any emergency room in the event of a medical emergency, inpatient and outpatient services are subject to the Medicare Advantage Plan’s network. ■ Know your co-pays, co-insurance, deductibles, and maximum out of pocket expense. For Medicare Advantage Plans with Prescription Drugs, and stand-alone Medicare Prescription Drug Plans, you should also consider: ■ Is your pharmacy a network pharmacy? If not, you will likely pay more for your prescriptions. ■ Are your prescriptions on the plan’s formulary? Know what your prescription drugs will cost. AMAC’s trusted licensed insurance agents strive to provide our members with the most suitable option we have ■

available by reviewing these key factors with each member. Our agents try to make this overwhelming time period as easy as possible for our members. Stay ahead of the rush this year and call AMAC as early as October 1st to get the 2014 plan information. Please keep in mind that 2014 plan information will not be available to us prior to October 1st. The Annual Enrollment Period begins on October 15th and runs through December 7th. AMAC encourages you to start the process early this year. With approximately 10,000 seniors aging into Medicare each day, the Annual Enrollment Period will be busier than ever before. Our agents await your call and look forward to providing you with the highest level of service.

Simply Jedediah

Stop Complaining and Start Doing One of the best lines of advice I’ve ever gotten came from my Aunt Rose in the third grade: “Stop complaining about what you don’t like, and do what you can to change it.”

I took her advice that afternoon, had a much better school year because of it, and promised myself I’d never forget her words of wisdom. So here I am today, immersed in a sea of politics and culture wars, TV and radio debates, panel discussions and Q & A sessions where I’m challenged to think hard about who I am, what I value, and what messages I hope to convey to the listeners and viewers who count on me to tell them what I really think. There’s never a day that goes by that I don’t think about my aunt’s advice. So, let’s do ourselves - and our country - a favor and apply it. Yes, the mainstream media is painfully biased. Yes, the Obama administration has and will continue to use Hollywood and the entertainment industry to push its agenda. Yes, the Left has been highly focused on - and skilled at using pop culture outlets to shift

by Jedediah Bila

public opinion on political, cultural, and social issues. Yes, academia is often in the brainwashing business and revisionist history is alive and well. And now for my controversial statement: So what? What do the Left’s tactics have to do with me or my ability to counter them with smart policy, solid media strategy, innovative marketing, effective delivery, creative projects, and youth outreach? Nothing. They have absolutely nothing to do with me. Unless, of course, I spend more time complaining about what’s wrong than challenging it. That, I’m afraid, is a mistake being made all too often on the right. Yes, talking Obamacare repeal is important. But what’s more important is having smart, charismatic free-market enthusiasts in media, at events, and in liberal hubs talking specifics about alternatives. Why are the alternatives better? Who stands to gain? Why should young people care? Where are the hired messengers for this? In D.C. talking to each other? On TV being non-specific? Writing up proposals they can toss on a website that the ideal target audience will never read? Yes, speaking at conservative college forums is very important. But what’s more important is speaking at college liberal forums. Be the odd man or woman out. Challenge the status quo. I promise you that someone in that room will leave thinking about what you’ve said. I did it as a student at Columbia University, I did it among professors

while working in academia, and I do it every day in liberal New York City. Trust me, eyes and ears do open. Conservative and libertarian novelists, filmmakers, artists, musicians, clothing designers - challenge the system. Use your creativity and talent to define this movement; don’t let the Left define it for you. Will it be hard to get projects published and promoted? Sure. You know what else was hard? The drafting of the Constitution. They managed to get it done. There are people in this business who are content to preach to the choir, spew talking points, and hope for the best. I’m not one of them. So I ask you to join me in working to get people of all ages, races, religions, and professions to think a little harder, to open their eyes and ears a little wider, and to question what many in media and academia have told them for so long. In other words, let’s stop complaining and start doing.

Be Prepared

5 Steps to Help You Prepare for a Disaster Did you know that September is National Preparedness month? As we approach the one year anniversary of Hurricane Sandy and reflect on the disasters that occurred earlier this year, make it a point this month to prepare for a disaster. Advanced planning can save lives and protect property in the event of a disaster.

Here are a few recommended tips from Travelers to help you and your family prepare now, before a catastrophe strikes. When developing your disaster plan, please remember that safety always comes first.

1. Plan an evacuation route It is critical to prepare an evacuation route in advance of a disaster, as it may be too late to do so once an impending threat is announced. ■ Identify possible evacuation routes outside your neighborhood, taking into account the types of threats that may arise. ■ Designate a destination for all family members to meet. ■ Map out an evacuation route to your meeting place, ensuring your entire family is familiar with the route. ■ Estimate the amount of gas your

your Insurance Advisor

12 | www.amac.us

vehicle(s) will need to reach the meeting place. Remember that gas stations may be closed during emergencies. When evacuation becomes necessary, local officials will likely provide the information to the public through the media. Pay attention to news and weather reports, and be aware of what is going on around you. Please heed evacuation warnings when they are given.

2. Designate a contact person Identify an individual that you and your family can contact regarding your whereabouts after a disaster. This is especially helpful if you and your family members are separated during the disaster. It may be easier to communicate with your family members and your contact person after a disaster by using your cell phone’s text messaging capabilities. Telecommunications networks tend to be strained in emergency situations, and making voice-to-voice contact may be difficult. Make sure everyone in your family knows how to send and receive text messages.

3. Prepare a survival kit A survival kit may be useful for all types of emergencies, from a simple power outage to a catastrophic storm. If a disaster strikes, you may need to leave your home sooner than you anticipated, so it is important to have your kit readily available. Your survival kit should include: ■ Canned food (3-7 day supply) ■ Water (3-7 day supply; 1 gallon per person, per day) ■ Can opener ■ First-aid kit ■ Portable radio ■ Flashlight ■ Batteries ■ Medicine ■ Clothing ■ Blankets ■ Insurance policy continued on pg. 13

Be Prepared continued from pg. 12

5 Steps to Help You Prepare for a Disaster Store data electronically Important personal documents can help you reestablish your life after a disaster. Consider storing digital copies of the following on a password-protected flash drive and keeping it with your survival kit: ■ Wills, trusts, deeds ■ Titles ■ Personal & family records, including medical records ■ Legal & financial documents ■ Birth certificates ■ Account numbers ■ Copies of licenses ■ Home inventory ■ Pictures of your home & belongings You could also include on your flash drive items that are not essential but have sentimental value (e.g., family photographs, music). In addition, you should list the specific needs of infants, the elderly, individuals with special needs, and pets.

4. Review your insurance policy Review your homeowner’s policy annually, and speak with your insurance representative to make sure you have the right types of coverage and the right amount of coverage. Many insurance policies do not cover flood damage. If you live in a flood-prone area, you may want to ask your insurance representative about flood insurance.

5. Create a home inventory Create a written inventory of the items in your home, store it on a password-protected flash drive or disk, and update it periodically, especially as you make large purchases. Make sure to include a list of your contents, when they were purchased, and what you paid for them. It may also be useful to take photographs of each room in your home and include them on the flash drive or disk along with your written inventory. We hope you take the time to prepare for a disaster and take the steps needed to help keep your family and property safe. AMAC is Rising

Standing Strong for Conservative Values Hello AMAC Warriors. I address you as Warriors because that is what you are. Warriors. Warriors of Faith, Family, and Freedom. Warriors of truth. Most of you, dare I say, Warriors of God.

T

hose on the left might be critical of me for mentioning God in a public forum, but I’ll remind them that the First Amendment doesn’t just say, “Congress shall make no law respecting an establishment of religion...,” but also continues, “... or prohibiting the free exercise thereof.” Earlier this month, I published a post on Facebook and on our website. It evidently struck a nerve with the liberal camp, because they flooded us with hate mail simply because we took a conservative stance on an issue. At times, it can be difficult to be conservative, especially growing up in New York like I did. I was fortunate to have a loving family - including AMAC’s founder and my father, Dan Weber - to help me get to know God and to teach me how to think, regardless of what the teachers or other kids were telling me at school. One thing I’ve learned is that, in general, so many of the most commonly used arguments against conservative values that I’ve encountered are based not on facts, but on euphoric ignorance, sometimes even bordering on hatred. I’m not at all saying that all liberals are ignorant or hateful. I have many, many friends who are

by David G. Weber Chief Operating Officer, AMAC

liberal and are loving, caring people with whom I simply have different views. But if you’re a conservative, you most likely understand the sentiments that I’m trying to express. You’ve lived these sentiments. If you don’t support a governmentrun healthcare plan, they’ll argue that you don’t care about the sick. They are wrong. Conservatives think that a socialized healthcare system will hurt the sick, not help them. If you are Pro-life, they’ll argue that you care more about a lump of cells than a starving, needy child. They are wrong. Conservatives love all of God’s children, born or unborn. If you believe in teaching an individual to earn a living rather than to become dependent on entitlements, they’ll argue that you hate the poor. They are wrong. Conservatives believe in individual accountability, but will still help those who truly need it. If you are critical about the Government’s handling of Social Security funds, they’ll argue that you don’t care about the elderly. They are wrong. Conservatives believe in fiscal responsibility and want to ensure that our tax dollars are used appropriately and as intended for the benefit of the elderly and for future generations. If you believe in free enterprise, they’ll argue that you are rich, greedy, and only care about the upper class. They are wrong. Conservatives believe that free enterprise creates jobs for all Americans and is such a big part of what has made

America great. If you believe in a strong National defense, they’ll argue that you’re a warmonger. They are wrong. Conservatives believe that a strong military is necessary for America’s survival. And possibly the most despicable tactic of all, they’ll call you a racist simply for being conservative. Once again, they are wrong. Too many liberals love to play the race card. It’s their fallback position when their arguments have no truth or validity and when they have nothing else to say. You know you’re not a racist and God knows your heart. That’s what matters most. I ask you to respond to haters with love. Don’t respond to their hateful statements with hateful statements of your own. Respond with wisdom, facts, and logic. Fight fire not with fire, but instead, with God’s love. That doesn’t have to mean that you cannot or should not stand up strongly for yourself or for your values. After all, could you be armed with any greater strength than God’s love? Pray for the haters because they need to be prayed for. When you’re confronted with hateful criticism, act as Jesus Christ would, and know that God is smiling upon you. May God Bless you, and may God Bless the United States of America.

Don’t Let Your Children Inherit Your Nursing Home Bill Not planning for long-term care (LTC) expenses in retirement can easily deplete funds you had intended to leave your children. In fact, depending on where you live, your kids could even be liable for your unpaid nursing home bills. If you didn’t know that, you are not alone. Alarmingly, more than three out of five Boomers surveyed in a recent nationwide survey say they do not believe that state laws can force children to pay their parents’ unpaid nursing home bills. However, 29 states currently have laws that could make a patient’s children responsible for unpaid LTC bills. Pennsylvania and New Jersey have been the most aggressive in enforcing its filial laws. Recently, the Pennsylvania Supreme Court upheld a child’s liability for his parent’s nursing home care. The court ruled that John Pittas was responsible for his mother’s $93,000 nursing home bill (HCRA v. Pittas). Eldercare attorneys say while many states currently don’t enforce their filial laws, the increasing cost of healthcare may soon have additional states considering doing so. A parent’s legacy to his or her children used to include leaving behind an inheritance. However, a Harris Interactive poll that surveyed 813 Americans age 50 or older with at least $150,000 in income or investable assets revealed that the escalating costs of healthcare and lack of proper planning have many Americans hoping just to break even and not be a burden to their children.

Concern but no plan for LTC Seven in ten Boomers nearing retirement say their biggest concern when planning for retirement is paying for

long-term care, yet fewer than one in four have talked to their financial advisor about it. Approximately four in five say that they do not expect their children to support them in retirement – including providing physical care and financial support, and letting them live in their homes. However, nearly one in four say they are not planning at all for LTC expenses.

Starting difficult discussions While nearly half of respondents have discussed LTC costs with their spouse, only ten percent have discussed it with their children and only six percent with their parents. Respondents indicated that they find it difficult to discuss LTC, most noting that the topic is depressing. Though it’s difficult to start these conversations about seemingly somber topics, families and advisors need to put the difficult conversation in perspective by thinking about the future and how a conversation now can make a situation easier down the road. Most Americans are in denial that they will ever need nursing home care, so they never plan for LTC costs. However, the U.S. Department of Health and Human Services estimates that 70 percent of those over age 65 will need LTC during their lifetime. The average cost per year for a nursing home is projected to be $265,000 by 2030 – and that is not for a private room.

Make a plan It is important to start discussing LTC planning as a family and develop a well thought out plan so that parents and children understand where LTC funding will come from and both parties feel secure in the approach. Proper retirement planning should include some type of LTC insurance protection that can provide funds for someone should they have LTC expenses. The most commonly known long-term planning choice is the traditional standalone LTC policy. While it is very customizable, some people don’t like the “use it or lose it” nature of these products. There are also some innovative products available – including a LTC rider that can be added to life insurance coverage when purchased. With a life insurance/LTC rider combo, the death benefit is available to be accelerated, while living, for LTC expenses. However, in the event no LTC is needed, the insured has a death benefit to leave to heirs. The children of Boomers are likely to have their own retirement challenges. Parents who don’t plan for LTC expenses in retirement are taking a big gamble and potentially risk turning their children’s inheritance into a nursing home bill. Information provided by John D. Caffrey, CFP

Then I found GreatCall’s 5Star Urgent Response service and I thought, ‘This is the answer!’ The 5Star is a mobile medical alert device that gets you help whenever you need it, wherever you go. TM

Your Health

Living Healthy with Diabetes Diabetes mellitus refers to a group of diseases that affect how your body uses blood glucose, commonly called blood sugar. Glucose is vital to your health because it's an important source of energy for the cells that make up your muscles and tissues. It's also your brain's main source of fuel.

Symptoms

I

f you have diabetes, no matter what type, it means you have too much glucose in your blood. Over time, having too much glucose in your blood can damage your eyes, kidneys and nerves. Diabetes can also cause heart disease, stroke and even the need to remove a limb. Good diabetes management is the key to your good health. Working with your diabetes health care team to create a self-management plan is one of the most important things you can do to take care of your health.

Your Team, Your Plan Your team consists of your health care providers and may include an endocrinologist, a diabetes educator, mental health professionals, a dietitian, nurses, and other specialists. Sit down with various members of your health care team to construct the right plan to keep your blood glucose levels under control.

Plan Essentials In general, diabetes self-management may involve: Meal plan - Your plan will limit high-fat and high-salt foods and include plenty of high-fiber foods, fruits and vegetables, fish, lean meat, legumes, whole grains, and low-fat or fat-free dairy products. Regular exercise - Most people should aim to get 30 to 60 minutes of physical activity, like brisk walking, on most days of the week. Your health care team

can help you decide what types of exercise will be the safest and most effective for you, and how you can manage your blood glucose levels while you exercise. Weight management - Weight management is a great way to reduce your risk of complications and manage your diabetes, especially when you have type 2 diabetes. Stress management - Too much stress can cause your blood glucose levels to become elevated. Learn to handle your stress and make activities such as yoga, meditation, and participation in hobbies part of your regular routine. Medication - Your diabetes medications are essential to keeping your blood glucose levels under control. It is important that you take them as directed by your doctor, even when you aren’t having any symptoms. Checking your feet - Nerve problems can cause a diabetic to develop foot problems, which can, in turn, become serious. Examine your feet daily for wounds, blisters and swelling. Contact your doctor if you have a sore on your foot that doesn’t heal. Monitoring blood glucose - Your health care team may recommend that you regularly check your blood glucose levels. Follow their instructions, and keep a record of your levels that you can take with you to your health care appointments. Quitting cigarettes - Smoking can increase your risk of heart disease and other diabetes complications. If you smoke, talk with your doctor about strategies for quitting.

Diabetes symptoms vary depending on how much your blood sugar is elevated. Some people, especially those with prediabetes or type 2 diabetes, may not experience symptoms initially. In type 1 diabetes, symptoms tend to come on quickly and be more severe. Some of the signs and symptoms of type 1 and type 2 diabetes include: ■ ■ ■ ■ ■

■ ■ ■ ■ ■

Increased thirst Frequent urination Extreme hunger Unexplained weight loss Presence of ketones in the urine (ketones are a by-product of the breakdown of muscle and fat that happens when there's not enough insulin) Fatigue Blurred vision Slow-healing sores High blood pressure Frequent infections, such as gums or skin infections and vaginal or bladder infections

Although type 1 diabetes can develop at any age, it typically appears during childhood or adolescence. Type 2 diabetes, the more common type, can develop at any age and is often preventable. Controlling blood pressure and cholesterol - Keeping your blood pressure and cholesterol levels in check is important to prevent heart disease, a common complication of diabetes. By following a good self-management plan, you can gain better control over your diabetes and avoid complications down the road. You’ll feel good doing it too!

Meet the Governor of Maine - Paul LePage How one man overcame adversity

I

had the pleasure of meeting Maine Governor Paul LePage at a conference last spring. When the Governor asked me the name of the organization I represented, I told him it was AMAC and a broad smile broke out across his face. He happily told me that he too, was an AMAC member. Later that evening, I had the pleasure of dining with Governor LePage along with his son and daughter. It was at this dinner that I learned about the Governor’s fascinating life story. Perseverance and determination are among the traits we Americans look for in our leaders. Unfortunately, many government leaders are lacking in these traits. This is not the case for Governor Paul LePage. As you will see, Paul LePage had no choice but to face the trials life presented to him very early in his life. And he met those trials head on with perseverance and determination. Special thanks to Lauren LePage, the Governor’s daughter and assistant to his chief of staff, for providing the details of the life of your fellow AMAC member, the honorable Governor of Maine, Paul LePage. Paul LePage has spent most of his life tackling one challenge after another challenges that would defeat most people. The oldest son of eighteen children in a dysfunctional and poverty-stricken family, Paul LePage left home at the age of eleven to escape domestic violence.

by Andrew Mangione

Homeless, he lived on the streets making a meager living shining shoes and doing whatever work he could find. At age thirteen, two families jointly took him in, trading days each week. Eddy and Pauline Collins kept him busy washing dishes at Theriault’s Cafe. Bruce and Joan Myrick kept him busy hauling boxes for Bruce’s Pepsi-Cola truck. Paul overcame all odds. He graduated from high school, attended college at Husson University and became editor of the college newspaper. He went on to earn an MBA from the University of Maine. Paul continued to work hard and earn success and rose to become the lead executive of one of New England’s largest retail chains, Marden’s. During his time at Marden’s, Paul successfully grew the business, creating jobs even during the recession. As he pointed out during his campaign for governor of Maine, Marden’s management had a simple philosophy for expansion: only grow the business when there was money in the bank to pay for it – something he said government should learn. Prior to joining Marden’s, Governor LePage headed a private consultancy firm. His clients included banks, law firms, insurance companies, bankruptcy courts and trustees. His industry experience includes the manufacturing, wood products, forestry, power, furniture, food and beverage, building supply and construction business sectors in Maine and Canada. Next to escaping a life of poverty in Lewiston, Governor LePage’s greatest

success has been as Mayor of Waterville. A Republican in a solidly Democrat town the Governor worked across party lines to reduce taxes annually, improve the city’s credit rating, increase the rainy day fund and maintain strong support for local education – all without cutting services. As a result he was re-elected again and again. In 2010, Paul LePage won a 7-way primary election to advance to the general election, and ultimately was elected as Maine’s 74th Governor. As Governor, Paul LePage has significantly reduced the state’s unemployment rate, enacted the largest tax cut in the state’s history, created Maine’s first charter schools and reformed welfare. Governor LePage is an American success story, and his record clearly indicates his support for conservative values. We are proud to count him as an AMAC member.

Op-Ed

Punish - and Reform the IRS Americans have a right to demand that the Internal Revenue Service do its job without political bias. Yet today, the IRS has gone off the rails and decided political intimidation is part of the agency’s mission. There is no question that Congress should investigate. Lawbreakers must be prosecuted.

T

he scandal has even had a significant impact on Main Street. In a Job Creators Network Foundation poll last month, 61 percent of small business owners said they, too, feared retribution from Washington bureaucrats if they spoke out. Your member of Congress may soon bring punishment to bear against an out-of-control IRS. But if that’s all they get done, then you should fire your representative for not fixing the problem. The real scandal isn’t how the IRS enforces the tax laws - it’s the tax code itself. We want to believe that the Rule of Law governs in America, but the punishing and costly complexity of our tax code leaves us ruled not by law, but by lawyers and accountants. The modern federal income tax was born 100 years ago, and the first CCH Standard Federal Tax Reporter was published to explain it all. That first edition in 1913 was just 400 pages, yet today it runs to nearly 74,000 pages. If the first tax rules required a 100-yard dash of compliance knowledge, the modern version is like running half a marathon.

by Mike Leven Mike Leven is President and Chief Operating Officer of the Las Vegas Sands Corporation and a Job Creators Network Foundation Foundation member.

The IRS says the annual cost of this paperwork for all of us is $168 billion and 6.1 million man-hours. That’s an economy larger than South Carolina and at least two dozen other states. It is no surprise that this power is a tempting target for abuse, and the IRS has been used as a political weapon during the reign of at least four other Presidents from both parties: Nixon, LBJ, FDR, and JFK. Murder, bootlegging and bribery were among the list of serious crimes attributed to mobster Al Capone, yet accountants enforcing the federal income tax were the only lawmen that could bring him to heel. The US Supreme Court had ruled that even illegal income was subject to the tax, and Capone couldn’t figure a way to pay up. We all rightfully appreciate that this violent gangster was brought to justice. But there’s a sobering lesson: The federal tax register checked in at just 500 or so pages back in 1931, and apparently it was already easier to get away with murder than comply with the federal income tax. Today, it’s not surprising that individuals and businesses often feel like criminals for just trying to honestly sort out what they owe and what of their own legally-earned money they can keep. Hundreds of millions can be spent lobbying politicians for and against changes in the tax code as political debates fixate on who is or is not paying their “fair share” and which politically connected businesses deserve special breaks. The result is not a tax code, but a moral

code, and morality needs a lot more rules, lobbyists and loopholes. And it makes more room for ideological witch hunts. The IRS says the annual tax compliance paperwork cost imposed on all of us - that $168 billion - is equal to 15 percent of the total money that the Tax Man takes. Other estimates have calculated a number more than twice as high. We may be paying close to one dollar in tax compliance cost for every three the government collects. It’s an immoral waste. The purpose of a tax service should be to efficiently collect the money we need to fund the government we want. Period. Big reformers suggest tossing out the tax code and replacing with a simple, flat income tax, or a new flat-rate sales tax. These have their flaws and their critics, but most really would be an improvement. Real, less ambitious solutions can work as well. President Reagan and Congress agreed to serious tax simplification in 1986, and the state of Michigan recently threw out the nation’s worst business tax and replaced it with a much simpler, pro-growth reform. At Job Creators Network Foundation, we believe the IRS scandal will not be truly resolved until we have real tax reform. If taxpayers accept anything less in the wake of the IRS scandal, we have failed.

Understanding Free Enterprise and How It Generates Wealth for the United States

I

n the 2012 election cycle, President Obama famously said that the business owner “didn’t build that business, the government did.” The President missed the point. Government does not produce wealth. Free Enterprise produces wealth. Government does not possess wisdom to control the economy or the people working within it. “Free Enterprise is the system characterized by individual liberty over collectivism, earned success over entitlement, and private entrepreneurship over government control.” (2010, Arthur C. Brooks, “The Battle”) Adam Smith, the famed economist who wrote “The Wealth of Nations” in 1776, observed that the key phenomenon that builds nation’s wealth is individuals working independently for their own interests and their own gain, and “is led by an invisible hand to promote an end (wealth building).” In other words, Dr. Smith observed that productivity gains are magnified when people work for themselves. (Book IV, Chapter 2) Individuals working for their own “self interest,” create wealth through their labors, production, and commerce with other individuals pursuing the same goals. The impact of the “invisible hand” on the local and national economy is

huge. If Dr. Smith were alive today, he might refer to President Obama’s assertion of state control and heavy taxation as the “dead hand” squeezing the life out of the wealth of our nation. The founding fathers knew the importance of government being the servant of the people, not its master. Liberty was a central theme in their writings and actions. Free Enterprise allowed people to take charge of their own economic lives and allow them to choose their own destiny, profession or business without interference from the government, a concept that did not exist in Europe at the time. “A wise and frugal government, which shall restrain men from injuring one another, shall leave them otherwise free to regulate their own pursuits of industry and improvement.”(President Thomas Jefferson, First Inaugural Address, March 4, 1801) From the beginning, Americans worked hard and created the nation we know today. Alexis de Tocqueville visited America in 1835 and wrote in “Democracy in America” the exceptional qualities of the people. Everyone had equal access to work in the economy as they deemed fit, not as deemed by aristocrats, as was the system in Europe. Immigrants left their homeland to pursue the opportunity to build a new life for themselves. Their children took up the torch and pursued their own industry, unfettered

Economy continued from pg. 29

Understanding Free Enterprise We watched Free Enterprise introduced into formerly socialist societies with destructive central planning turn those societies into productive citizens producing wealth from the ashes of a failed economy. We know the history and we took civics. We understand the system, or do we? We must write about Free Enterprise because our young people are being persuaded that Free Enterprise is evil and must be destroyed by the likes of Michael Moore and others supporting progressive ideology (Socialism). People over the age of 40 understand and believe in the Free Enterprise system. In a Pew Research Poll conducted in March 2010, people were asked if they preferred Free Enterprise or Socialism; 16% preferred Socialism. So what is the problem? People grow up when they find out Socialism forces all people to pay for it. The former Prime Minister of Great Britain, Margaret Thatcher, famously said “The problem with Socialism is that you eventually run out of other people’s money.” We outgrow Socialism, so why worry about it?

Small businesses are the job-creating engines in the American economy. Small, independent businessmen or women create more than 80% of all the new jobs and employ more than half of our total workforce.

Tragically, that same Pew poll revealed that 30% of adults under the age of 30 believe Socialism is the answer and

another third are open to it but “don’t know.” Did you get that? Two thirds of our young people favor or are open to considering Socialism over Free Enterprise. This shocking revelation demonstrates that the progressives are succeeding in persuading the young with their siren song of “fairness“ and “spreading the wealth” to benefit society. We are surrounded with leaders in the media, government, schools, entertainment, and other sources condemning a Free Enterprise that creates powerful rich people who trample on the less fortunate. They condemn our society as “selfish” and “uncaring” with no concern for the well-being of their fellow man. How do we tell our children and grandchildren the truth? We know Free Enterprise made this nation the most prosperous in history and we know that this system raised the level of prosperity for all Americans to enjoy. Small businesses are the job-creating engines in the American economy. Small, independent businessmen or women create more than 80% of all the new jobs and employ more than half of our total workforce. Indeed, even the Fortune 500 companies began as small businesses. Apple began in a garage. Harvey Firestone began in his small shop producing a new form of tire. Even Ben Franklin began using a broken printing press and created a publishing empire of his day. Yes, history proves that America was built with the small business owner beginning with an idea, a service or simply meeting the demand from their customer. But how do we defend Free Enterprise to the young adult? Where do we start? And will they listen? For their sake, we must try; they are the future of our nation and the hope of future generations. We can start with the employees in our small business, with our grandchildren and great-grandchildren, and

with our friends and neighbors and spark a debate defending our cherished system of Free Enterprise and a government that respects private property and individual freedoms. We need to engage in thoughtful discourse, not slogans and “sound bites.” When an employee asserts that government must spend to stimulate the economy and when it fails (as it always does), it is due to not spending enough we can answer by stating historical fact. After the stock market crash of October 1929, President Herbert Hoover persuaded a Republican Congress to pass a stimulus package of 250 Billion dollars in November 1929. If we convert that number to today’s 2010 dollar value, that stimulus would have a value in excess of3.838 Trillion Dollars! Imagine the impact on an economy a fourth the size of the 2009 economy. It failed and the Great Depression continued. Government cannot spend its way out of trouble. How, then, shall we live? AMAC members are supporting the American values of Free Enterprise, individual liberty, respect for private property, and limited government. This is our call to action. We must take on the challenge to educate the young people of this land and defend our cherished values and our impressive history. We celebrate Free Enterprise every time we hear a story of a successful venture, such as reported elsewhere in this publication, on the youth rebuilding cycles to earn money and help fellow kids who cannot afford a bike. We must not shrink from our responsibility. If not you, then who?

It’s really not a hard concept to grasp, and a group of youngsters in New Jersey is proving that Free Enterprise is a goal worth pursuing. In the Jersey Shore community of Asbury Park, there’s a place where our country’s future is alive and well and dedicated to understanding what it means to work for something rather than expect something to be handed to them. It’s called Second Life Bikes, and it’s a thriving venture that gives out life lessons right along with a young person’s often most coveted goal—their own bicycle. Second Life Bikes is the creation of 41-year-old former Wall Street professional Kerri Martin, who traded the corporate life for something more spiritually and emotionally constructive after witnessing the events of 9/11. One might think that starting a bike repair shop was not all that unique, but you need to look inside to get a feel for what it’s really about for Martin. She sees a much bigger picture—a place where the youth in

her area can learn about themselves and what they can do for themselves. Martin accomplishes this bigger picture by “employing” young people, and having them work a set number of hours (recorded carefully on time cards, no less!) to earn a bicycle. They learn mechanical skills and life skills during their time at Second Life Bikes, but most importantly they learn that you have to give in order to get. Interviewed recently for a CBS News feature, Second Life Bike veteran 11-year-old America Rice explained what she’s learned in very simple terms, “That’s because if you want something, you have to earn it,” said America. “Everything is not going to come to you just when you want it. You have to do certain things, and if you’re not able to do it then you won’t get it.” So far, Martin and her “staff” of ten adult volunteers have had the opportunity to work with hundreds of youths in the Asbury Park area, and have witnessed the joy of a growing number of rehabilitated bicycles hitting the streets with their proud new owners. And on top of that, they’ve seen many of these young people stay on at the shop after earning their own bike, giving back to the community by helping others fix their bikes. Amid all of the clamor these days about unearned privileges and entitlements, it’s both refreshing and reassuring to see

AMAC and Its Members: Keeping America Strong

B

y now, AMAC members are familiar with our association’s humble beginnings. Like many American entrepreneurial ventures, AMAC began to fill a need: provide people who are age 50+ with a competing senior organization that better represents their values and ideals.; build an organization that combines one-of-akind member benefits and services with aggressive advocacy; represent issues that are dictated by the membership and listen, but more importantly, act, on their concerns; construct such an organization that places a white-hot spotlight on the hypocrisy of a big, outof-control government while amplifying the voices of those who want to protect and perpetuate the values and beliefs some would denigrate because they fear their power, the power of truth. This is exactly what Dan Weber set out to do in the summer of 2007. Any new endeavor always involves a certain amount of risk. For Dan, one of the biggest risks was entering an arena long dominated by a firmly entrenched, highly recognizable senior citizen establishment. Undaunted, Dan Weber risked his own capital and started up AMAC as an alternative senior

organization. At first, members trickled in, mostly by word of mouth as Dan and his team built the member benefits part of AMAC. Then, AMAC Advantage was launched and shortly thereafter went national, bringing word of AMAC’s advocacy for conservative values to all 50 states. Membership continues to grow and nearly every dollar that comes into AMAC goes right back out to support new member growth. Engaging with AMAC members has proven to be a delightful experience. Our members have very diverse backgrounds. They’re small business owners, nurses, Fortune 500 professionals, teachers, career military service members, physicians, lawyers, insurance agents, and work or have worked in many more careers that are far too numerous to list in this space. We also discovered that AMAC members possess a singular passion to be part of the solutions for the problems facing America today. This was evidenced when the call went out last fall for participants in AMAC’s Health Care Workshops. If you recall, AMAC was asked by the House GOP Doctors Caucus to engage our members in a dialogue regarding reforming health care. The end result was 100 AMAC members taking part in 10 workshops that resulted in a 175-page document filled with unique and novel solutions to increase the quality of health care while driving down its cost. This passion

for involvement was further evidenced as we launched the AMAC Delegate Program. To date, over 130 AMAC members have stepped forward to volunteer as Delegates, and numerous visits have already been made to local Congressional district offices. Some Delegates have actually scheduled and held AMAC Town Hall Meetings with their Member of Congress. AMAC’s members have also expressed their desire for information and knowledge. They do not want to be told what to do, but rather seek the facts

they require in order to make informed decisions on their own. This is why we highly regard our members’ input as a guiding force in directing AMAC’s priorities. Our members are also astute when it comes to the ways of government and its role in people’s lives. Our polling indicates as much. When we polled our members regarding the IRS’s role in the economy, AMAC members didn’t respond with a knee-jerk, emotionally charged rant to just “get rid of the IRS.” They realize that a representative

republic needs money to function. While voting to disband the IRS, AMAC members were willing to examine the fair tax or flat tax as viable replacement options. AMAC members have worked hard, sacrificed for their children, saved their money and most now are enjoying their golden years. AMAC members that are not yet retired continue to persevere so that they too may enjoy a comfortable retirement. It’s the American Dream. Yet this dream may not be attainable for our children and grandchildren.

Every day we see an erosion of freedoms; an invasion of privacies; intrusive, unpopular laws; rising prices for fuel and basic necessities and tax dollars shamelessly wasted on bloated bureaucracies. AMAC members could sit back and enjoy their hard-earned retirement and let the chips fall where they may for future generations. Fortunately, this aspect is not in an AMAC member’s DNA. They joined an organization to band together to fight for the values for which they believe. They know free market enterprise leads to entrepreneurial opportunities and that leads to job growth and creation. They know the Constitution was designed to protect Americans from government intrusion and it deserves to be protected and preserved. AMAC members realize that they find themselves in the domestic fight of an era. Their children’s and grandchildren’s future is at stake, along with the fruit of their lifetime of work and effort. They joined AMAC to push back and voice their dissatisfaction with the emerging status quo of increased debt, divisiveness and incompetence they’ve witnessed at the hands of their leaders. They want to restore the American Dream for their families. And working together with our members leading the way, we most certainly will.

George Bernard Shaw once said “Youth is wasted on the young.” Were he alive today, he might well say that computers and the Internet are wasted on the young. The very people who can benefit most from the digital revolution are the ones who are least likely to take advantage of it. Computers seem to be designed for teenagers, and many older folks are intimidated by the complex operating systems and complicated navigation. It’s gotten so bad that some people have to pay for instructional videos or go to classes just to use their computer. Now, the leader in developing products for Boomers and Beyond™ has introduced a computer that’s designed just for people like you. It’s helping thousands of people get back into life by keeping them connected.

I haven’t begun to explore all the benefits of this computer. It has opened up a whole new world for me. I love it, love it, love it! – Carol K., Benbrook, TX

Washington Buzz on Key Races

Virginia Gubernatorial Race With New Jersey Governor Chris Christie (R) cruising toward a second term, the bitter back-and-forth of the Virginia gubernatorial race has taken center stage as the political contest to watch in the 2013, off-year elections. Headed into the final campaign stretch, the Virginia race – which features a Clinton crony and a hard-right ideologue – remains extraordinarily tight.

Early polls give the edge to former Democratic National Committee chairman, Terry McAuliffe, who maintains a slight three-point lead over his Republican challenger, Attorney General Ken Cuccinelli, according to the latest Rasmussen report.1 The 44%-41% split falls within the 3% margin-of-error, meaning the governorship is still either candidate’s to win – or lose for that matter. Neither candidate is particularly popular among Virginia voters, however. In fact, 12% of voters remain undecided – a significant statistic that could play a role in determining who will be Old Dominion’s next governor. With many voters still uncommitted, several factors have an opportunity to swing the political pendulum in favor of one candidate. 1. Campaign Fundraising: Recent financial reports indicate that McAuliffe is dominating Cuccinelli on the fundraising front. With $5.4 million in cash on hand, McAuliffe continues to outraise Cuccinelli, who has a mere $2.7 million in cash on hand. Both candidates received big donations from their

by Caroline Howle

national parties, but fewer contributions from Virginia businesses could be part of what is hurting the Cuccinelli campaign. McAuliffe’s financial resources may be able to give him a leg-up when it comes to advertising and communicating his message to Virginia voters – who allegedly know very little about either candidate. Still, Cuccinelli should not be underestimated. The sitting AG has been out-fundraised in all of his past elections but has always managed to find a way to win. 2. ObamaCare: Minutes after the Patient Protection and Affordable Care Act (PPACA), known more commonly as “ObamaCare,” was signed into law in 2010, Cuccinelli became the first of many AGs to officially declare the legislation unconstitutional. Challenging ObamaCare’s individual mandate, Cuccinelli argued in the lawsuit that Congress did not have the authority to punish people who did not want to purchase health insurance. Cuccinelli’s highly-publicized legal action sparked a massive anti-ObamaCare movement in the states, earning him a national reputation as a passionate, conservative go-getter. On the other hand, McAuliffe sided with the president in the law’s creation, supporting both ObamaCare and the public option. McAuliffe also favors expanding Medicaid in Virginia, whereas Cuccinelli does not.

With such a large percentage of voters in the Commonwealth still undecided, these factors could have considerable bearing on the outcome of Virginia’s gubernatorial election.

3. Energy: Given that Virginia is the 12th largest coal-producing state in the country, McAuliffe and Cuccinelli have been forced to address the issue of energy. Virginia is home to thousands of coal-related jobs – making energy one of the key components to winning the independent vote. Cuccinelli has been quick to label McAuliffe the anti-coal candidate, after McAuliffe made a string of controversial statements back in 2009. During a 2009 Virginia Democratic gubernatorial primary debate, McAuliffe continued on pg. 39

Virginia Gubernatorial Race stated, “We need to move past coal.”2 Then in July, McAuliffe appeared on the campaign stump with former University of Virginia professor, Michael Mann – renowned for his global warming research that has been used by the Left to champion the idea of government-subsidized clean energy. Cuccinelli continues to declare himself coal’s one true friend in the race, aligning McAuliffe with President Obama and his “job-killing war on coal” initiative. Still, Democrats allege that Cuccinelli’s position on corporate tax credits will benefit his allies in the coal industry – if he is elected. A tax break of this kind could send Cuccinelli critics into a modern-day political patronage fit. 4. The Economy: Though both candidates have centered their campaigns on the economy, McAuliffe and Cuccinelli approach the creation of jobs in fundamentally different ways. McAuliffe’s progressivism continues to act in sharp to contrast to Cuccinelli’s call for smaller government. Cuccinelli seeks to empower middle class families and businesses through tax cuts, reducing “government barriers that crowd out economic opportunity in the private sector.”3 He plans to reduce personal income and business taxes by .75% and 2.0% respectively, while creating a committee focused on providing aid to small business. McAuliffe plans to create jobs in different ways, by focusing on lower costs for higher education, improving infrastructure, expanding Medicaid through ObamaCare, and investing in alternative energy. As of late, many voters have questioned McAuliffe’s ability to help the economy recover, as he recently led two separate, highly-touted business ventures that resulted in failure – both of which involved alternative energy. With such a large percentage of voters in the Commonwealth still undecided, these factors could have considerable bearing on the outcome of Virginia’s gubernatorial election. As voters struggle to identify with either candidate, an emerging trend can be noted: candidates are increasingly becoming more polarizing. The Virginia gubernatorial race demonstrates that candidates are sticking to their parties’ core principles, making it difficult for moderate voters to relate to major party candidates. To make an informed choice about who to support, voters on the fence need to craft voting strategies – a process that begins with deciding what issues are most important to them and requires some research of candidate platforms. Still, it remains to be seen whether state history will repeat itself in November by electing a governor from the party that lost the White House just 12 months earlier. Regardless, the outcome of the Virginia faceoff will help set the tone for the 2014 congressional midterm elections, offering a foretaste of voters’ approval or disapproval for the direction in which the country is headed. With a major presidential election on the horizon, the battle to move the hearts and minds of voters at the state level is critical. 1

The Commonwealth of Massachusetts goes by many different nicknames including The Bay State, likely in reference to the Cape Cod Bay where early settlements were made. Settlers made their way to Salem, Massachusetts and thrived on farming and fishing. Though historically overshadowed by The Salem Witch Trials of 1692, Salem became an important fishing, shipbuilding and maritime trade center of the 18th century. The Peabody Essex Museum was founded by sea captains in 1799, many of whom were involved with international trade with Europe, the West Indies, China, Africa and Russia. The museum represents art and culture from New England and around the world. Salem is home to the Friendship, a fascinating replica of a 1797 merchant tall ship. AMAC on Capitol Hill

Demand Grows for AMAC’s Legislative Support on Capitol Hill AMAC has been diligent in acquainting members of Congress with our mission of faith, family and freedom on Capitol Hill. This mission is resonating with legislators and they have been eager to establish working relationships with AMAC.

T

he demand for AMAC’s support for legislation continues to increase during the first session of the 113th Congress. So far, AMAC has provided its support to a total of 14 Congressional and Senatorial offices in 2013. Here is a breakdown of the latest bills that have been endorsed: H.R. 903: Introduced by Rep. Charles Boustany (R-LA), H.R. 903 seeks to repeal the job-killing employer mandate that was instituted by the Patient Protection and Affordable Care Act. H.R. 2682: AMAC has received over 140,000 signed petitions from members calling for ObamaCare to be defunded. It is in response to these demands that AMAC is pleased to indicate our unwavering support for H.R. 2682 – the “Defund ObamaCare Act of 2013.” Introduced by Rep. Tom Graves (R-GA), H.R. 2682 deauthorizes future appropriations and withdraws prior funding for the implementation of any provision under the Patient Protection and Affordable Care Act. H.R. 2453: AMAC members may be interested in learning

by Andrew Mangione

more about a bipartisan bill brought to our attention by the office of Rep. Keith Rothfus (R-PA), entitled the “Medicare Beneficiary Preservation of Choice Act of 2013.” Jointly introduced by Reps. Rothfus and Kurt Schrader (D-OR), H.R. 2453 seeks to restore a degree of consumer choice for those attempting to find the best health care plan for their individual coverage needs. H.R. 2745: The “No Social Security for Illegal Immigrants Act of 2013.” Introduced by Rep. Dana Rohrabacher (R-CA), this significant piece of legislation addresses critical concerns regarding the future of Social Security. Amending Sections 210 and 211 of the Social Security Act, H.R. 2745 prohibits aliens not authorized to work in the U.S. from receiving Social Security benefits. H.R. 1473: The “Standard of Care Protection Act.” Introduced by Rep. Phil Gingrey, M.D. (R-GA), this bill ensures that medical malpractice lawsuits cannot be brought against health care providers based solely on the new standards and guidelines for care set forth by the Patient Protection and Affordable Care Act. H.R. 1473 reinforces the belief that important health care decisions should continue to be made by patients and their doctors – free from the threat of invasive new legal repercussions. H.R. 1502: The “Social Security Disability Insurance and Unemployment Benefits Double Dip Elimination Act of 2013.” Introduced by Rep. Sam Johnson (R-TX), Chairman of the House Ways and Means

Throughout all of this activity, AMAC remains a vigilant advocate for our members’ chosen issues. It’s AMAC members that set our agenda, and AMAC members’ passion and love for America that inspire us to tirelessly work on your behalf. We will not rest until the changes you seek have been accomplished.

Subcommittee on Social Security, H.R. 1502 is an important piece of legislation that seeks to responsibly reform current law, which enables an individual to receive Social Security disability insurance and unemployment benefits at the same time. At a time when real solutions are needed to make Social Security solvent, many lawmakers recognize that double-dipping in entitlement benefits must end in order to preserve funds for rightful beneficiaries. H.R. 1404: This legislation seeks to repeal the expansion of Medicaid mandated by the Patient Protection and Affordable Care Act. The “Medicaid Expansion Repeal and State Flexibility Act,” introduced by Rep. Matt Salmon continued on pg. 47

Chicago Doctor Invents

Affordable Hearing Aid Amazing new digital hearing aid breaks price barrier in affordability

Reported by J. Page Chicago: Board-certified physician Dr. S. Cherukuri has done it once again with his newest invention of a medical grade ALL DIGITAL affordable hearing aid. This new digital hearing aid is packed with all the features of $3,000 competitors at a mere fraction of the cost. Now, most people with hearing loss are able to enjoy crystal clear, natural sound—in a crowd, on the phone, in the wind—without suffering through “whistling” and annoying background noise.

New Digital Hearing Aid Outperforms the Expensive Ones

This sleek, lightweight, fully programmed hearing aid is the outgrowth of the digital revolution that is changing our world. While demand for “all things digital” caused most prices to plunge (consider DVD players and computers, which originally sold for upwards of $3,000 and today can be purchased for less then $100), yet the cost of all digital medical hearing aids remained out of reach. Dr. Cherukuri knew that many of his patients would benefit but couldn’t afford the expense of these new digital hearing aids, which are generally not covered by Medicare and most private health insurance.

He evaluated all the high priced digital hearing aids on the market, broke them down to their base components, and then created his own affordable version—called the AIR for its virtually invisible, lightweight appearance.

It delivers crisp, clear sound all day long and the soft flexible ear buds are so comfortable you won’t realize you’re wearing them. Using advanced digital technology, the AIR automatically adjusts to your listening environment—prioritizing speech and de-emphasizing background noise.

Can a hearing aid delay or prevent dementia? A study by Johns Hopkins and National Institute on Aging researchers suggests older individuals with hearing loss are significantly more likely to develop dementia over time than those who retain their hearing. They suggest that an intervention—such as a hearing aid—could delay or prevent dementia by improving hearing!

“Satisfied Buyers Agree AIR Is Best Digital Value” “I am hearing things I didn’t know I was missing. Really amazing. I’m wearing them all the time” —Linda Irving, Indiana “Almost work too well. I am a teacher and hearing much better now” —Lillian Barden, California “I have used many expensive hearing aids, some over $5,000. The Airs have greatly improved my enjoyment of life” —Som Y., Michigan “I would definitely recommend them to my patients with hearing loss” —Amy S., Audiologist, Munster, Indiana

(R-AZ), justly amends title XIX of the Social Security Act “to eliminate the increased medical Federal assistance percentage under the State plan with respect to the newly eligible mandatory individuals and to provide states with greater flexibility under Medicaid.” H.R. 763: This bill seeks to repeal the annual fee on health insurance providers enacted by the Patient Protection and Affordable Care Act. AMAC personally delivered a letter of support to the office of Representative Charles Boustany (R-LA), commending his effort to address a crucial change necessary to unburden the public – particularly mature Americans and seniors – from a harmful tax that will force insurers to raise prices on health care premiums. AMAC also continues to connect with other like-minded conservative organizations in Washington, DC. On a recent trip to the nation’s capital, Vice President of Government Relations, Andrew Mangione, delivered a powerful presentation to 150 elected officials, political activists, and movement leaders during the Americans for Tax Reform’s “Wednesday meeting.” This weekly gathering – moderated by prominent conservative figure, Grover Norquist – gives individuals and organizations a chance to brief attendees on the strides being made to promote free market, center-right principles across the country. Individuals in the audience were very pleased to learn that a fast-growing alternative organization representing seniors exists and is serious about advocating faithfully on behalf of that important demographic. At the end of Mr. Mangione’s presentation, numerous hands filled the air with questions pertaining to how AMAC members are solicited and engaged in what the organization is doing on a daily basis. Mr. Mangione shared about the gains being made at the state and local levels through the AMAC Delegate Program as well as how AMAC has been able to positively differentiate itself from other seniors’ organizations through advocacy at the Federal level. Support for AMAC’s Social Security plan continues to grow. The National Center for Policy Analysis (NCPA) reviewed AMAC’s plan and agrees with the approach taken to establish solvency for this important benefit. NCPA Senior Fellow, Pam Villarreal, finds AMAC’s plan “designed to preserve basic benefits for all while making cost of living adjustments that commensurate with the income of beneficiaries. This helps preserve the program for those who rely heavily on Social Security.” Ms. Villarreal also favors AMAC’s companion to Social Security, the Early Retirement Account, as a much needed savings mechanism “that helps retirees of all income levels accrue additional savings for their retirement years.” AMAC is now actively seeking Congressional sponsors to introduce the plan as a bill in their respective chambers of Congress.

A Shell Game I grew up in the small Long Island town of Blue Point which has famously given its name to the exceptionally fine, sweet, briny oysters which were first discovered in the waters of the Great South Bay.

L

iving on an island whose surrounding waters yield multitudes of oysters, clams, crabs and scallops has fostered my love for a variety of shellfish, and I am not alone. During the past 30 years, shellfish has become more and more popular with a growing abundance of available choices. Today squid, crawfish, octopus and other varieties of shellfish that were once considered ethnic or exotic are as common as shrimp and clams on menus and in local markets. Shellfish may seem difficult to prepare, but the opposite is true. Shellfish are easy to cook, rich in minerals and bursting with fresh from the sea flavor. ■ Shellfish is a broad term for crustacean and mollusk seafood. Crustaceans include lobster, crab, shrimp and crawfish. Mollusks include clams, mussels, oysters and scallops. ■ When it comes to shellfish, freshness is key. All shellfish should have the

fresh and mild odor of a sea breeze. Purchase shellfish on the day you plan to use it and refrigerate as soon as possible. Unless you live close to where shrimp are harvested, the freshest ones will be frozen. Thaw shrimp under cold running water, not in the microwave which will begin to cook the shrimp as it defrosts. To remove shrimp shells, start by pulling off the legs. Then grasp the shell from the underside and peel outward and around to the other side. Leave or remove the tail as desired. To devein shelled shrimp, make a gentle incision down the length of the back with a sharp knife. Run under cool water to flush out the vein. To devein shrimp with the shell on, straighten the shrimp as much as possible, grab the exposed end of the vein with a flat-edged tweezers, and pull gently. Raw shrimp turn pink and firm when ready. If serving cold, emerge shrimp in ice water immediately to stop cooking.

■ Before cooking clams, oysters and mussels, tap the shells and discard any that do not close, along with those that are cracked or broken. After cooking, the shells should open wide. Discard any that remain closed. ■ Store clams, oysters, mussels and thawed shrimp in the refrigerator in an open plastic bag placed in a large bowl or pan filled with ice. ■ Generally, there are two types of scallops: Bay scallops are smaller. Sea scallops are larger. Both are sweet and mild flavored.

■ Most scallops are sold shucked from the shell and are either “dry-packed” or “wet-packed”. If you have a choice, choose dry-packed. Wet-packed scallops are soaked in a chemical solution that turns them white and helps them stay fresher longer. The wet-packed scallops release a lot of liquid during the cooking process, and aren’t as tasty as the dry-packed ones. ■ Scallops turn milky white and firm when cooked thoroughly.

■ Crabs and lobsters spoil rapidly after death, so purchase those that are alive and active. ■ Store live lobsters and crabs in the refrigerator in a damp paper bag placed in a large roasting pan lined with wet newspaper. ■ Boiled lobster will turn bright red and the tails will be curled when they are done. ■ The most important thing to remember when cooking shellfish is – do not overcook. It becomes tough, rubbery and dry.

Steamed Mussels ❏ 3 ½ - 4 lbs. mussels ❏ 2 Tbs. olive oil ❏ 1 Tbs. butter ❏ 6 cloves garlic – finely chopped ❏ 4 shallots – thinly sliced ❏ ¼ tsp. red pepper flakes ❏ 1 ½ cups dry white wine ❏ ¾ cup chopped fresh Italian parsley Rinse mussels under cold water, removing any “beards” (black hairy fibers sticking out of the shells) and discarding any that are broken or dead. In a large pot with a lid, heat oil and butter over medium heat. Add garlic, shallots and red pepper flakes. Cook until soft – 3 to 5 minutes. Add mussels, wine and half of parsley. Increase heat to high and cook covered for 2 minutes. Stir mussels. Cover and cook an additional 3 to 4 minutes or until mussels have opened wide. Sprinkle with remaining parsley. Serves 6 – 8.

Clams Casino ❏ 4 slices bacon ❏ 24 large clams ❏ 4 Tbs. olive oil ❏ 1 Tbs. butter ❏ ½ cup minced onion ❏ ¼ cup chopped green bell pepper ❏ 2 cloves garlic – minced ❏ 1 cup dried bread crumbs ❏ ½ tsp. dried oregano ❏ 2 Tbs. parmesan cheese ❏ 2 tsp. dried parsley ❏ ¼ tsp. paprika Cook bacon in a small skillet until crisp. Crumble and set aside. Preheat oven to 350 degrees. Wash clams. Place on a cookie sheet and bake for 1 to 2 minutes or until clams open. Remove meat from shells. Chop and set aside. Increase oven temperature to 450 degrees. Melt 2 Tbs. of olive oil and butter over medium heat. Add onion, green pepper and garlic. Sauté until tender. In a medium bowl, combine bread crumbs, oregano, parmesan cheese, crumbled bacon, chopped clams and sautéed vegetables. Fill clam shells with mixture. Sprinkle with parsley, paprika and remaining 2 Tbs. olive oil. Place on cookie sheet and bake at 450 degrees for 7 minutes. Serves 4.

Shrimp & Pasta in Champagne Sauce New England Lobster Roll ❏ 2 Tbs. mayonnaise ❏ 1 tsp. fresh lime juice ❏ Dash tabasco sauce ❏ 2 scallions – chopped ❏ 1 stalk celery – finely chopped ❏ 1 ½ lbs. lobster meat – cubed ❏ salt & pepper ❏ 4 split-top hot dog buns ❏ ¼ cup of butter - softened ❏ 4 lettuce leaves

❏ 4 Tbs. butter ❏ 4 Tbs. chopped shallots ❏ 1 cup bottled clam juice ❏ 1 cup heavy cream ❏ 1 cup Champagne ❏ 1 lb. large shrimp, peeled and deveined ❏ ½ tsp. pepper ❏ 8 oz. fettuccine noodles ❏ 2 Tbs. chopped fresh parsley

Combine mayonnaise, lime juice, tabasco, green onion and celery. Gently fold in lobster. Add salt and pepper to taste.

Melt butter over medium-high heat. Add shallots and sauté 2 minutes. Add clam juice. Increase heat to high and simmer until liquid is reduced by half – about 5 minutes. Add cream and champagne. Cook until thickened – 3 to 5 minutes more. Add shrimp and cook for 2 minutes or until shrimp turn pink. Stir in pepper.

Spread butter on the flat sides of the hot dog buns. Toast buns in a skillet over medium heat until golden brown. Place a lettuce leaf inside each bun and fill with lobster salad. Serves 4.

Meanwhile, cook fettuccine according to package directions. Drain. Toss with champagne sauce. Arrange on a platter and sprinkle with parsley. Serves 4.

Breakthrough technology converts phone calls to captions.

New amplified phone lets you hear AND see the conversation. The Captioning Telephone converts phone conversations to easy-to-read captions for individuals with hearing loss

Hello mrs fleming this is dr martin how are you today? I just want ed to give you an update on your new prescript ion

SEE what you’ve been missing!

Do you get discouraged when you hear your telephone ring? Do you avoid using your phone because hearing difficulties make it hard to understand the person on the other end of the line? For many Americans the telephone conversation – once an important part of everyday life – has become a thing of the past. Because they can’t understand what is said to “For years I avoided phone calls because Finally… a phone you can use again. them on the phone, they’re often The Captioning Telephone is also I couldn’t understand the caller… cut off from friends, family, packed with features to help make now I don’t miss a thing!” doctors and caregivers. Now, phone calls easier. The keypad has thanks to innovative technology large, easy to use buttons. You get adjustable volume there is finally a better way. amplification along with the ability to save captions for review later. It even has an answering machine that provides you with the captions of each message. See for yourself with our exclusive home trial. A simple idea… made possible with sophisticated technology. If you have trouble understanding a call, the Captioning Telephone can change your life. During a phone call the words spoken to you appear on the phone’s screen – similar to closed captioning on TV. So when you make or receive a call, the words spoken to you are not only amplified by the phone, but scroll across the phone so you can listen while reading everything that’s said to you. The captioning function can be turned on as needed. Each call is routed through a call center, where computer technology – aided by a live representative – generates immediate voice-to-text translations. The captioning is real-time, accurate and readable. Your conversation is private and the captioning service doesn’t cost you a penny – all you need is a high-speed Internet connection from any Internet provider and a standard phone line. Callers do not need special equipment or a captioning phone in order to speak with you.

The Captioning Telephone is intended for use by people with hearing loss. In purchasing a Captioning Telephone, you acknowledge that it will be used by someone who cannot hear well over a traditional phone.

Finally… an adult brief that keeps you dry all night! NEW!

Special Introductory Price!

Night Proofs™ Briefs are virtually leakproof, comfortable and one of the most absorbent on the market today.

I

t’s a problem no one likes to talk about, but over 25 million Americans suffer from urinary incontinence. For those people, the problem is embarrassing, uncomfortable and can lead to a variety of other health issues. Without resorting to medication, most people choose to wear an adult diaper. These products have been on the market for years, but because most are sold to hospitals, where frequent changing is not an issue, the quality, comfort and absorbancy have not really improved. Now, an innovative company has revolutionized the adult diaper brief. The Night Proofs™ Briefs offer up to 12-hour protection against leaks, odor, and skin irritation. Just think of the convenience of going to bed without having to get up during the night to change– or waking up to a soaked bed. Now, thanks to superior design and high-quality materials, you or someone you love, can get the benefits of this amazing new adult diaper. What’s more, because they are designed to last for up to 12 hours with virtually no leaks, you’ll save on product cost and laundry. Building a better brief. The secret behind this remarkable product is the lining. It’s made of ultra-absorbent material that can hold three times the fluid of a typical diaper without leaking. The special composition wicks away the liquid, so the surface touching the skin remains dry. The elastic leg cuffs are comfortable and this will ensure that the liquid ends up in the brief, not on your bed. The briefs feature refastenable tape and an exclusive wetness indicator that tells you just how wet they are without removal.

The

Why take our word for it? Take your present diaper and pour 7 full 12-ounce glasses of water into it. You might want to do this in the sink, because a lot of the water will leak out. If you do the same thing with the Night Proofs™ Briefs, the water will be fully absorbed, and the surface of the lining will remain dry. You’ll be amazed at the difference. The Night Proofs™ Briefs are easy to put on, comfortable and are designed to provide you with up to 12 hours of protection. They are even designed to mask odor, so no one will know you have them on but you.

Why spend another night without them? Call now to take advantage of our introductory offer. Helpful product experts are standing by for your call. The Night Proofs™ Briefs are not available in stores, and you won’t have to risk running into one of your former high school classmates with adult brief that holds a shopping cart full of adult diapers. They come in three sizes, including x-large for up to a 67-inch waist, over 104.8 ounces! so they’ll fit perfectly. Don’t hesitate, call today!

Manufacturer’s Recall Just Announced

Are you suffering after being implanted with a

STRYKER REJUVENATE

®

Modular Hip Implant? Have you experienced failure of your Stryker Rejuvenate hip implant, resulting in pain and other complications that may have required revision surgery? If so, please know that we are investigating these injuries for possible legal action. On July 4, 2012, Stryker Orthopaedics announced a voluntary USA Recall of certain models of its Rejuvenate and ABG II hip implants, due to concern over revisions potentially associated with fretting and/or corrosion at or about the modular neck junction of the devices. These occurrences, according to Stryker, “may result in adverse local tissue reactions manifesting with pain and/or swelling.” In April, a Canadian Medical Device Recall Listing was issued noting revised Rejuvenate usage instructions, warning that these components may also lead to improperly releasing potentially dangerous amounts of metal debris or metal ions into the patients’ bodies and may result in Adverse Local Tissue Reaction including metallosis and necrosis. Weitz & Luxenberg can help you understand your legal options. Government Watch

Maintain your independence with hearing help from Beltone!

In ? We Trust How hard is it to lose $30,000 in government funding? Invoke God's name and find out! Louisiana Sheriff Julian Whittington had done so for 10 years as part of his local Young Marine's initiative. The only complaint he's ever received is from the U.S. Justice Department which unfortunately happened to be funding the project. Not anymore. The DOJ pulled its annual grant for uniforms and supplies when the Bossier Sheriff refused to remove "God" from the Young Marine's oath. "They wanted a letter from me stating that I would no longer have voluntary prayer and I would also have to remove "God" from the Young Marine's oath," the Sheriff fumed." I flat said, 'It's not going to happen. Enough is enough. This is the United States of America -and the idea that the mere mention of God or voluntary prayer is prohibited is ridiculous."

Taking the Military at Faith Value There may not be a lot of atheists in foxholes, but there certainly are a lot of quiet Christians these days. Under an administration that views religion as more of a liability than an asset, more of our troops are taking the "Don't Ask, Don't Tell" approach to faith. The climate of intimidation that began in the Air Force is bleeding over into every branch, leading even military chaplains to wonder about their security in referencing a Bible that some airmen aren't even allowed to leave on their desks. In a Pentagon where evangelical Christians are viewed by some as "extremists," the pressure to impose a secular culture on our nation's military has intensified enormously during President Obama's time as commander-in-chief.

Government Waste ■

Approximately $1 million of U.S. taxpayer money has been used to create poetry for the Little Rock, New Orleans, Milwaukee and Chicago zoos. The goal of the “poetry” is to help raise awareness on environmental issues. During 2012, the federal government spent $15 million to help Russian weapons institutes recruit nuclear scientists. Over the past 15 years, a total of approximately $5.25 million has been spent on hair care services for the U.S. Senate. The National Institutes of Health recently gave $666,905 to a group of researchers that is conducting a study on the benefits of watching reruns on television. The Government Accountability Office said that from 2008 to 2012 one agency, the Natural Resources Conservation Service, made $10.6 million payments on behalf of more than 1,100 people who’d been dead at least a year. Another branch, the Risk Management Agency, paid out $22 million to more than 3,400 policyholders who’d been dead at least two years.

AMAC Delivers 114,701 Defund ObamaCare Petitions to Speaker Boehner At 5:00 am Memorial Day, George Spangler and Smokey Wist, both from the AMAC Florida office, loaded 114,701 petitions to defund ObamaCare into a van and headed north to Speaker Boehner’s local office in West Chester, Ohio. Along the way they were greeted by a steady stream of hands coming out of car windows with thumbs up from fellow travelers. At each fuel stop, food stop and hotel stop folks voiced their support for AMAC’s message of defunding ObamaCare. Speaker Boehner’s staff was extremely appreciative of the support from AMAC’s membership. AMAC Delegate Rita Fullerton (OH-8) joined us in presenting the petitions to Speaker Boehner’s Field Representative, Erin Clemons. AMAC is dedicated to the good fight … we can win this thing!

We are pleased to announce the opening of our newest AMAC location in Albuquerque, New Mexico. This is an exciting step forward in the progression and growth of our organization. Our new location will continue to improve our ability to better serve our AMAC members and friends across the country and provide even broader coverage to the AMAC community from coast to coast.

The Social Security Report Website Launched Last month, AMAC announced the availability of a new website focused exclusively on Social Security and its many issues. AMAC’s Social Security Report website (www.socialsecurityreport.org) is a resource for anyone interested in the state of our country’s Social Security program, and includes these features: ■ Daily updates on major breaking news and legislative developments affecting Social Security ■ Quotes and comments on Social Security policy ■ Questions and answers relevant to topics of interest to the public ■ An archive of documents on key Social Security issues ■ AMAC’s proposal for prototype Social Security legislation The site’s tagline—“Your Daily Resource”—reflects its objective of being a “go to” place for Congressional Aides and their Senators and Representatives, along with the general public, to stay abreast of developments and projections on Social Security and its related programs.

AMAC is Forming a Charitable Foundation The Association of Mature American Citizens (AMAC) is taking a great step forward with the formation of the AMAC Foundation. Since receiving Internal Revenue Service approval in early July as a tax exempt non-profit [501 (c) (3)] organization, AMAC has been developing an internal framework that will pave the way for the Foundation to expand AMAC’s goal of broadening senior citizens’ understanding of the complexities of the Social Security System in America. Initial steps in the Foundation’s start-up will focus on defining a comprehensive and realistic vision for the organization, along with developing a targeted mission to achieve its goals. Recruiting of a body of steadfast Board Members will be one of the very first steps in this process. Stay tuned for announcements on AMAC’s website (www.amac.us) as this exciting venture unfolds. Launching the Foundation is viewed as a priority for us, and we look forward to its contribution to AMAC’s general mission of keeping America strong.

Purses are indispensable for most women, and go with them from the car to the office to the bathroom to the grocery store and everywhere in between. After testing swabs of women's purses, a microbiologist from the University of Arizona found at least some bacteria on every purse and most purses had tens of thousands of bacteria. The worst area of the purses turned out to be, as you might suspect, the bottom. To keep your purse as germ-free as possible: •Wipe it down with ultra-microfiber terry cloths. These cloths have built-in antimicrobial protection and are made of fibers that pick up contaminants that cannot be seen with the naked eye! •Have your purse dry-cleaned occasionally. •Don't put your purse on the floor. Hang it on the back of your chair in a restaurant, use the hooks provided in restrooms and stash it in a desk drawer at work.
