Saluting our Veterans This issue is dedicated to all of you who served in the United States Armed Forces and especially those who gave their lives while defending our freedom. At this very moment, many of our young men and women are in harm’s way, serving in foreign lands, while we are living in the comforts of our homes. Please keep them in your prayers and help them in any way you can. AMAC came across a new treatment for Post-Traumatic Stress Disorder (PTSD) that appears to offer some positive relief. That’s why we did a story on it and are urging the Veterans Administration to investigate the reports of promising results from the treatment. Please read the article and spread the word about its potential benefits.

by Dan Weber President & Founder, Association of Mature American Citizens

One year ago we launched the AMAC Foundation, our 501 (c) 3 charitable affi liate. We’re pleased to share some of our accomplishments in our short history and we hope you will be excited by what we can achieve in the future. We need to educate our members and especially our children and grandchildren about the true history of America, which is one of the Foundation’s major goals. Lastly, with all the recent stories of police shootings, we wanted to share the news of an attachment for handguns that will allow a police officer an option of stopping an assailant without the use of deadly force. Thank you for your patriotism and support.

Your Health

A Hearing Loss is More Noticeable than Hearing Aids Good hearing lets you savor life. When it’s easy to hear, it’s easy to stay involved. Sharing laughter with loved ones, excelling on the job, remaining independent—good hearing is the key.

D

id you know that by age 55, one in four adults has hearing loss? And, by age 65, almost one in three has hearing loss? If you suspect you have a hearing loss, ignoring or neglecting it can make it worse. But, treating a hearing loss with hearing aids can dramatically slow its progression—helping you preserve good hearing for a lifetime!

Good Hearing Can Be Yours Again Hearing loss can develop over time or suddenly. It can be caused by earwax, illness, or age. It can affect different people in different ways. The more you learn about the ins-and-outs of hearing loss, the more empowered you become. Maintaining healthy hearing starts with a baseline hearing screening. Just as you schedule annual physicals and dental exams, it’s essential to schedule a hearing test every year. Knowing where you stand will help you hear your very best, at any age.

Simply Jedediah

Thank You, Jack, and All Our Veterans Jack was the funniest guy I had ever met. He was one of my grandfather’s friends, a seventy-something Brooklyn guy who could make you laugh at the drop of a hat and cook a mean marinara sauce in no time at all. He had fought in World War II.

H

is wife said that he returned home a different man—still full of heart, still wanting to make her laugh and smile, but with a depth that reflected things he had seen and lived that most of us could probably never understand. Jack gave me advice from time to time in my middle school years. He would tell jokes when mean girls made me want to crawl under my bed and hide. He would advise me which boys looked like trouble from afar and which ones would probably remember to buy me a corsage for the school dance. Most importantly, he would share stories about friendship, loyalty, commitment, patriotism, a nd st reng t h. It seemed as though no matter what nonsense got tossed his way in this crazy mess called life, he would tackle it and never let it shake him. His priorities were always lined up just as they ought to be. He never

by Jedediah Bila 8 | www.amac.us

stressed the little things. And he wasn’t afraid of much. I remember wondering what he had seen and heard to build someone so strong. Every now and then, he would tell a story, pause, and look away for a moment. Then he would look back at me and voice a lesson he wanted me to learn. I always wished I could see what he saw in the moment he looked away, that I could learn a little more about the man who had overcome so much. Jack’s stories taught me about betrayal, about love, and about fighting for what you believe in. War had taught him to be disciplined and to dig deep for courage when you need it most. It had taught him the value of someone really having your back and how to overcome the disappointment when others don’t. It had taught him to keep fighting for something even when you’re exhausted and to believe in the power of your mind and body to do big things. It had taught him that love bridges distance and that the memory of someone’s smile can sometimes save you in ways you hadn’t imagined. Years later, when life hands me lemons, I still think of Jack and do my best to make lemonade. Politics is such a divisive game. It brings out the ugliness in many. But when I give speeches throughout the country or have conversations in television green rooms or on air, one thing always brings people together—

the desire to protect and honor our veterans. Honoring their sacrifice and seeing to it that they receive proper care continuously brings people of different political persuasions together. It gives me hope for the humanity and goodness in people that bridges political and other divides. So, thank you to all of our veterans. Your courage and commitment inspire us every day. And thank you, Jack, for helping me to build strength and character before I really understood what those things meant. I carry those lessons with me every day and am a much better fighter because of them. ★

Did You Know? Nature’s Strongest Material Comes from Sea Snails

Researchers at the University of Portsmouth may have found the strongest natural material humankind has ever known. And it’s a ... sea snail. Specifically, it’s a sea snail’s teeth. Didn’t see that one coming did you? It’s known as a limpet, a small aquatic snail with a distinctive cone-shaped shell. Its teeth are so small, they had to be examined under a microscope. No matter the size of the limpets’ teeth, they all had the same amount of strength. The University of Portsmouth professor who led the study said that’s a big deal. “Generally a big structure has lots of fl aws and can break more easily than a smaller structure, which has fewer fl aws and is stronger. The problem is that most structures have to be fairly big so they’re weaker than we would like. Limpet teeth break this rule as their strength is the same no matter what the size.” So small, but really, really strong apparently. So strong, the material could be used to make the “cars, boats and planes of the future.” The research was published in the Journal of the Royal Society Interface.

Typewriters are Making a Comeback Move aside, iPad! Out of the way, speech recognition software! There’s a new kid on the block these days - the good old mechanical typewriter that many senior citizens cut their teeth on decades ago. It might be a shortlived phenomenon, or it might signal a return-to-the-basics cultural shift, but no matter how you characterize it, manual and electric typewriters are coming out of the basements and attics of America and reappearing

10 | www.amac.us

on the desks of a growing number of budding writers. Why? Well, some cite the simplicity of seeing words appear on paper that attracts them, while others indicate that it is comforting being able to avoid the distractions like incoming email, pop-ups, instant messages, etc. that accompany the electronic world. Still others simply enjoy the focus and regimentation that goes along with the manual typing effort. Whatever the reason, there’s a renaissance of sorts unfolding with respect to manual typewriters.

Feds help amateur filmmakers use video games The National Science Foundation shelled out almost $700,000 to help amateur fi lmmakers create movies by using 3D characters in virtual worlds. The goal was to reduce the barriers to learning the technical skills involved.

Surprising Benefits of Coconut Oil

Government Waste at its Worst U.S. builds melting walls The U.S. military spent $456,669 on a training facility in Afghanistan that melted when it rained. The military had the “dry fi re range” built to use as a training spot with Afghan special police, but since the structure was built with bricks made mostly of sand, it only took four months for the walls to disintegrate in the rain.

Uncle Sam pays for contractors to party like it’s 1999 Inter nat iona l Relief a nd Development, a nonprofit contractor that received about $2 billion in federal money to rebuild struggling countries, threw multiple lavish gettogethers that totaled $1.1 million. It billed the federal government for the parties - which included spa treatments, crystal chandeliers and a private zoo - saying they were for “training” and “staff morale.”

More payouts to Afghan government The Department of State gave the Afghan government $100 million in 2014 to help it close a budget shortfall that the Afghan leadership said was dire. Critics have blasted the department for failing to explain if the money was necessary and if the department will do it again. The funding of projects in Afghanistan has been rife with waste for years.

Helps with aging The oils found in the coconut have a positive antioxidant action in the body. This means they help our body stop the damage to other healthy fats and tissues in our body. Oxidation is considered a major contributor to ca rdiovascu la r problems a nd skin aging. Coconut oil can actually help our bodies reduce the need for antioxidant intake.

Good for your skin and hair Coconut oi l is a wonder f u l ly hydrating treat for skin and hair. It keeps the skin’s connective tissues strong, which prevents sagging and wrinkles. Apply coconut oil directly to your skin to soften the appearance of fi ne lines. Be sure you use virgin coconut oil with no additives.

Eases digestion Coconut oil has been found to benefit digestive disorders including irritable bowel syndrome and microbial related tummy bugs. Fatty acids in coconut oil contain anti-microbial properties, which have a soothing effect on bacteria, candida, or parasites that cause poor digestion.

Boost metabolism A study reported in the Journal of Nutrition found that coconut oil boosts metabolism. Researchers found that participants who consumed two tablespoons of coconut oil per day burned more kilojoules than those who consumed less. A speedy metabolism helps boost the body’s immune system and keep weight off.

Cooks in high temperatures Because coconut oil is a mediumchain saturated fatty acid, it has a h ig her smok i ng temperat u re t ha n most poly u nsat u rated or monounsaturated oils. When cooking at high temperatures, consider using coconut oil rather than olive oil, which oxidizes at high temperatures, creating free radicals.

This is No ‘Bird-Brain’ Idea Small business is the engine that d r ives t he A mer ica n economy, providing the majority of jobs and the latest in innovation. The owners and operators of these enterprises can also lead the way when it comes to caring for the neediest in their communities. Consider the successful Mr. Canary Company of Marion, Indiana. The company makes pre-fi lled bird feeders utilizing a work force consisting entirely of disabled workers and has done so throughout the two decades of its existence. The business is doing good, but don’t make the mistake of calling the woman who owns Mr. Canary a “do-gooder.” Jan Long is a savv y entrepreneur and is proud of her all-American company. “We’re not doing this for charity. This is a great, completely overlooked workforce,” she’s quick to point out. During the 20 years the company has been operating, it has been racking up profits at a healthy rate, defying the critics who said it couldn’t be done. It’s now a million dollar a year enterprise with its products available at some of the biggest retail stores in the nation.

A Little Doubt Goes a Long Way There’s no fool like an old fool, the saying goes, and the proof is in the fact that seniors have become a prime target for con men. So when a so-called IRS agent comes a-calling, with a demand for back taxes that you allegedly owe, just brush him off. Despite the fact that the Internal Revenue Service doesn’t work that way, the scam is one of the most pervasive and effective con games, bilking unsuspecting seniors out of millions of dollars each year. Then there is the guy or gal who calls a mark, purporting to be a health care provider who needs your Social Security number and other personal information. Don’t fall for it. These identity thieves use the info for a variety of illegal purposes, including Medicare fraud. The moral of this story is “don’t be so ready to fork over money or personal details of your life to just anybody; a little doubt can go a long way toward protecting yourself from fraudsters.”

Shopping for Light Bulbs?

Remember when the light bulb on your favorite reading lamp “blew,” and you made that trip to the store to buy a new one? Remember also how simple the selection process was when you got to the store? You had some different brands to consider, and you had a relatively limited range of wattage to pick from, but it was a nice, simple process. Those days are gone! If your shopping lists over the past few years included light bulbs, you know that it’s no longer a simple exercise to select a replacement bulb.

Remember the Energy Independence and Securit y Act of 2007? That legislation marked the beginning of the end for what we knew for years to be traditional light bulbs, since one of its mandates was to “phase out the use of standard incandescent light bulbs by 2014 and improve lighting efficiency by more than 70 percent by 2020.” What President Bush envisioned in 2007 is now a reality. These days, when you make that trip to the store, you’re faced with a perplexing array of replacement bulbs in many shapes, types, and prices, not to mention the options of light emitting diode (LED), halogen, or compact fluorescent lamp (CFL) technologies. And cost has emerged as an issue too; what in the “old days” would cost less than a dollar now can run you upwards of $10. But making the decision must take into account that LEDs consume 70-90% less energy and last 10 to 25 times longer. Halogens and CFLs are cheaper than LEDs, but there are tradeoffs. Halogens, for example, consume much more energy than LEDs, and CFLs have drawbacks like slow start-up and heat radiation. Don’t forget to make sure your selection of a replacement bulb has the correct wattage you need for that reading lamp. A typical comparison advertised by manufacturers equates the output of a 15-watt LED bulb to a 100-watt incandescent, while a 23-watt CFL bulb will produce the same output as the 100-watt incandescent. But the actual distribution of the light is different, in that LEDs - especially newer versions - produce focused, directed lighting (good for reading), while CFL output is more diffused (good for overall room lighting). So, it’s not as simple as it once was, but don’t despair - there are many helpful sources to guide you. There’s the Department of Energy website, Energy.gov, and non-governmental coalitions like Lighting Understanding for a More Efficient Nation (LUMEN), lumennow.org. ★

Financial Services & Advice

Investing in a Low-Income Environment

T

he Federal Reserve will likely keep short-term interest rates near zero as it has done since late 2008, at least until midyear. But it’s still uncertain whether and when, and by how much, the Fed will raise rates. Given that stance, pre-retirees and retirees alike must decide once again how to invest in a world where rates remain at historic lows, but might rise slowly, or quickly, or not at all . It’s a conundrum, especially since every investment comes with some sort of risk. If you invest in short-term fi xed instruments such as Treasury bills, certificates of deposit (CDs), or short-term bonds, you’ll actually lose money. Consider: You’ll earn best case 1.05% on a one-year CD (as of March 12). But with inflation running at 1.6% in 2014, your real rate of return, the difference between your nominal rate of return and the rate of inflation, would be negative 0.55%. In effect, you’re losing money by investing in a one-year CD.

By contrast, if you invest in a 10-year U.S. Treasury bond, you’ll earn 2.09% (as of March 12). But if rates rise, the value of that bond will decline. (Bond values move in the opposite direction of interest rates. When rates rise, the value of bonds, especially long-term bonds, decline. And when rates fall, the value of bonds rise.)

What do Do? How much income do you need? The fi rst step is to estimate how much you’ll need to withdraw annually from your nest egg; this means having a very clear understanding of your annual expenses as well as knowing what income you’ll receive from Social Security, pensions, part-time employment and the like. Any shortfall must be funded by your personal savings. The second step is to decide which risks to manage, and how to execute that

plan properly. There are a number of investment strategies and guaranteed insurance products to help you protect against the downside risk associated with the stock market. Don’t just invest for income. One huge trap for those facing retirement is the old saw, “Now that I’m retiring I need to invest to generate income.” Retirees today are too focused on that concept. Today, wealth consists of investments that can appreciate through capital appreciation and not only lose value through capital loss, but through inflation as well. Indeed, today’s retirees face many risks, inflation being just one of them. They also face market risk, interest rate risk and, most importantly of all, the risk of not reaching their goals Focus on the long term. This period of low interest rates will end. Investors should focus on building a diversified, low-cost portfolio that will meet their long-term objectives and goals, not just short-term cash flow. Tackling the Problems Seniors Face with Medicare

H

as your Medica re insura nce carrier denied a claim for a service that you received? Did you receive poor service from one of your providers? If so, you have the ability to dispute decisions and/or report poor service. The question for most seniors is “How do I do this?” Once a senior learns a little about the process then the next question is “Do I fi le an appeal, or do I fi le a grievance?” And then the fi nal question is “How do I fi le an appeal or grievance?” Below you will fi nd the answers to the questions that most seniors have when tackling the problems they face with Medicare or Medicare plans.

APPEALS An appeal is an action that you can take if Medicare or your Medicare plan refuses to approve a service, has a co-payment or co-insurance that you feel is too high, refuses to pay for or stops paying for services, prescriptions, and/or supplies, and you disagree with this decision. Depending on the type of coverage that you have, the appeals process will vary:

Original Medicare: If you have original Medicare (Parts A and/or B) you will need to follow their process. When you receive the Medicare Summary Notice that shows the service or item in dispute: ■ highlight the item you are appealing ■ write an explanation of why you disagree with the decision ■ be sure that all of your personal information on the notice is accurate (name, address, Medicare claim number and your phone number); add in this information if it does not appear on the notice ■ make a copy of the notice and your explanation and keep it for your records ■ send your appeal to the company that handles the billing; the company name and address will be listed on the notice

If Medicare continues to deny payment or services, you can request a review from a Qualified Independent Contractor. If the agency agrees with the denial, you will have to request a hearing before an Administrative Law Judge, as long as the amount in question is $150 or more. If you are dissatisfied with the Administrative Law Judge decision, you can request a review from the Medicare Appeals Council, and then if needed, you can request a judicial review in the federal district court if the amount in dispute is $1,460 or more. You can seek assistance with fi ling the appeal. The person assisting you can be your doctor, an attorney, a relative, or a friend. You will need to follow the process of appointing a representative. You have 120 days from the date you receive the Medicare Summary Notice in the mail to fi le an appeal. Medicare will send you a response within 60 days of receipt of your appeal. Your next Medicare Summary Notice will list the covered items, should the initial decision be overturned.

Medicare Advantage Plans: The appeals process can vary from plan to plan. Most plans will have a standard process and an expedited process. You must file your appeal within 60 days from receiving written notification of the denial. Generally, you will be required to send your appeal in writing, requesting a redetermination of the denial or otherwise negative decision, though the plan may allow you to make your request by phone, fax or email. Response time will depend on the type of request you submit. For a payment request, the carrier has 60 days to respond. For a standard service request, the carrier has 30 days to respond. If an expedited decision is required, your physician should make the request. This type of an appeal requires the plan to give an answer within 72 hours of receipt. Should you ask for an expedited decision on your own, the plan must make a decision within 72 hours if the plan feels there is a life

threatening situation, or that your health may be at stake. If the plan continues to deny payment or services, the plan must submit its decision to an independent agency for review. Please see your Medicare Advantage Plan’s communications regarding appeals for detailed information about their process and timelines.

Medicare Prescription Drug Plans: As with Medicare Advantage Plans, the appeals process may vary from plan to plan. Most plans will have a standard process and an expedited process. You must file your appeal within 60 days from receiving written notification of the denial. Generally, you will be required to send your appea l in w rit ing, request ing a redetermination of the denial or otherwise negative decision, though the plan may allow you to make your request by phone, fax or email. Prior to purchasing a drug with your Medicare Prescription Drug Plan, you have the right to get information about your benefits. You can:

Your Medicare Advisor

Problems with Medicare request a coverage determination which will state the plan’s decision about your drug coverage, including if a drug will or will not be covered, how much you can expect to pay, and results of an exception request ■ ask the plan to waive certain coverage rules such as a prior authorization for your drug ■ ask for an exception if your prescription is not on the plan’s formulary ■ ask for a pricing exception if you have a high cost drug and cannot take a drug in the same class that is in a lower tier Once your plan has received the coverage determination request, it has 72 hours to respond with a decision. If an expedited decision is requested because you haven’t received the needed medications, the plan must respond within 24 hours. If you disagree with the initial decision and start the appeal process, response time will depend on the type of request you submit. For a standard service request, the carrier has 7 days to respond. For an expedited request, the plan is required to respond as soon as possible, but no later than 72 hours. If the plan continues to deny payment or services, the plan must submit its decision to an independent agency for review. ■

GRIEVANCES A grievance is an action you take to fi le a complaint about the quality of care or other services you receive from a Medicare provider. Depending on the type of coverage you have, the grievance process can vary. You can fi le a grievance about: ■ the quality of care you have received ■ your Medicare Advantage Plan, Medicare Prescription Drug Plan, or any other Medicare Health plan ■ a doctor, hospital or other type of provider ■ dialysis or kidney transplant care ■ durable medical equipment You can fi le a grievance if someone at your provider’s office did not treat you in a courteous and professional manner, if you had a very long wait time at your provider’s office, if you have had an issue with a plan decision and have fi led an appeal (often appeals and grievances are filed together), along with any other dissatisfactory experience you have had with the plan or one of its providers. Drones Can Save Your Life!

T

he war on terrorism has brought an evolving technological concept to the forefront of popular culture –the use of unmanned aerial vehicles (UAVs). Commonly referred to as “drones,” the UAV concept has worked its way into the mainstream psyche, with tactical use by the military leading the way. What was not too long ago a futuristic notion has now become an almost everyday news item. But military uses aside, what other practical applications exist for drones? Well, there’s the sheer hobby aspect, popular among traditional remote control airplane enthusiasts as another way to expand into a new form of exciting unmanned flight. And then there’s the use of drones to provide aerial views of sporting events, to search for people or items lost in unreachable areas, and to perform high-level inspection of hard-toreach places, like electric transmission lines, rooftops, and disaster situations. Like most technologies, the more the concept is developed and perfected, the more quickly the price of entry drops. And as the price of entry drops, there is typically a corresponding uptick in the number of practical applications for the technology. That’s just what has happened in the medical industry, where drones are working their way into the delivery of emergency services. Alec Momont, of the Netherlands’ Delft University of Technology, has broken incredible ground in the use of drones as a way to dramatically improve survival rates for certain victims of cardiac arrest. “It is essential that the right medical care is provided within the first few minutes of a cardiac arrest,” Momont explains. “If

by Gerry Hafer 16 | www.amac.us

we can get to an emergency scene faster, we can save many lives and facilitate the recovery of many patients.” As his fi nal Master’s degree project at Delft, Momont crafted an approach to making this vision a reality. Momont used his industrial engineering knowledge and expertise to design what has come to be known as an “ambulance drone” — an unmanned aerial vehicle weighing less than nine pounds that can deliver life-saving equipment to the scene of a cardiac arrest victim in about a tenth of the time it takes traditional groundbased response vehicles. The drone can fly an elevated, straight line path directly to the victim, and can land on just about any flat, unobstructed surface in the victim’s proximity. All the drone needs to make the trip is direction from the GPS locator in the cell phone of someone calling for help. Flying at slightly more than 60 miles per hour, it can make the trip from a dispatch point to a victim within a four and a half-mile radius in under a minute. Getting to the scene is just the beginning of what the drone can do. Using a livestream video and audio connection, the drone operator can communicate with people at the scene and direct them on removing the built-in defibrillator and attaching it to the victim. The defibrillator designed for this type of use, by the way, also weighs in at less than nine pounds, so it fits within the payload capacity of the drone design. So, what does the future look like for this type of medical service? Well, there are some hurdles that still need to be cleared. How the drones will integrate into airspace needs to be worked out, as does the training and licensing required for drone operators. The Federal Aviation Administration (FAA) is addressing many of these logistical issues. In fact, the FAA in mid-February

2015 published its long-awaited first set of proposed legislation to govern the use of drones and, as the review of these rules unfolds in the coming months, it’s likely that emergency medical use will be given appropriate attention. Beyond the basic logistics, there’s the pervasive issue of liability and personal privacy that will require attention before a network of ambulance drones can be deployed. And, although on the downward scale as the technology matures, costs are still an issue, with each individual drone ambulance requiring an investment of about $17,000 to $19,000. The medical community recognizes the “first aid” value of drone technology, but acknowledges that the nearly instantaneous arrival of a drone-supplied defibrillator is not a total solution to the problem. Dr. Doug Degler, noted Medical Associates of Monroe County physician, put it well with this statement, “I think getting the defibrillator there in under 2 minutes is awesome! But there’s much more to it than that – supporting the airway/breathing, correct application of the leads, and so on, but I’m sure the drone calls for the ambulance as well.” With minds like Alec Momont at work, it’s likely that these hurdles will be cleared and that the ten-fold increase in survival rates for cardiac arrest victims will someday be achieved. And as is typical in technology, this is only the beginning of what can, and likely will, evolve in the years ahead, perhaps even drone-operated transport devices for humans. ★

On Our Shoulders, We Carry Lady Liberty Take Heart America!

Y

es, the Islamic State (or ISIL or ISIS) is a threat to Middle East security, the U.S. has closed half a dozen embassies in the region, Iran is angling for a nuclear bomb, Russia is more foe than friend (if the opposite were ever possible), and America seems everywhere in retreat. But there is nothing necessary, fated, or irreversible about any of this. Needed, in a word, is “global leadership,” or what Winston Churchill, Ronald Reagan and Theodore Roosevelt would call the courage of our convictions. If the world is today different – and it is, of course – from their respective eras and crises, the principles that point to victory and encourage optimism are timeless, exactly the same ones that have previously led to success. If we take a deep breath and understand these principles, pause to look them in the eye and dare to define the world accurately, the United States and our allies can restore the better part of world order. If we ignore, diminish, disparage or mock the principles that have always guided us toward moral and operational victory, we permit a different future to evolve. The choice is ours. Years ago, I was Colin Powell’s Assistant Secretary of State, appointed by President George W. Bush and unanimously confirmed by the U.S. Senate. My charge, between 2003 and 2005, was – among other things – to train the Iraqi police. To do that, a program that was highly successful until abandoned, we rehabbed the Baghdad police training center and created a new and expansive police training academy on the deserts of Jordan. Nine C-130 aircraft took 1500 vetted cadets from Baghdad airport to Jordan every four weeks. Each new set of recruits overlapped with 1500 already in training. All recruits got eight weeks of training, before returning and deploying in Iraq.

by Robert B. Charles

Given the mess that exists in the Middle East today, especially with Shiite militias warring radical Sunni Islamic terrorists (yes, that is what they are) in Iraq, with chaos and carnage in Syria, Yemen, Libya and beyond, how can anyone be optimistic? To what reference points does anyone look for hope? How can anyone suggest that a degree of order can be restored to the region, never mind the world? The answer comes in small observations, and understanding the flow of history. While recognizing that nothing about the future is determinate, there are important signs that – if we act strategically, morally and with vision – we can affect the future. In fact, we must act to affect the future. What are these “small observations” that give such hope? Well, there are many – but here is one. When we trained those tens of thousands of Iraqi police in the Jordan desert, we housed them in big, parabolic tents made of flimsy metal. These structures held a hundred beds, sometimes more. In each structure, we housed a combination of Sunnis, Shiites, Christians, and other minorities. And we made the recruits eat together and train together. Formula for disaster right? Well, in fact no. No disaster. Where there was a will – a genuine will – for peace, then peace was entirely possible. Our attrition rate was less than Harvard University’s, and we had virtually no unrest, no violent cultural clashes, no sectarian revolts, no ethnic battles or dramatic incidents of in-house crime or disaffection. Moreover, in our training center, that state of affairs lasted for years. How? There was a commonly understood desire to become trained, a shared commitment to the idea of a greater Iraq, and it subsumed the ethnic differences. This was the animating force behind order. Yes, there were rules. But there was, in effect, a local rule of law. If someone violated it – they knew they were headed home, opportunity lost. What happened, never reported in

the press, was that people of deeply held and highly divergent religious views created and maintained a pluralistic environment – more or less on their own. John Locke would have nodded. Where the possibility of a better future exists and is envisioned, is palpable and within reach, security becomes a function of mutual interest in seeing that vision materialize. If there is no hope, no outside expectation that a better future exists, the reverse is true. Resentments, hatreds, despair and functional depression govern. Under those conditions, the forces of evil capitalize on a reservoir of hopelessness – and horrible, objectively evil things begin to happen. How can this state of affairs be avoided – or remedied – in a place like modern Iraq? The answer is with global leadership, which to some degree boils down to clear-headed American leadership. Does that mean more 500-pound bombs, boots on the ground and kinetic confrontation with the forces of evil? Yes, it may. But that alone will not reshape the battlefield – or deliver civil order. Needed is a deeper understanding of human nature. Needed is the articulation of what is acceptable and unacceptable in human behavior. Needed is identification of the common principles that define a civil society. There must be an end to the nonsense of political correctness, international disengagement by America, and leaderless drift. Needed is an end to the prancing around words we will not say, like radical Islamic CONTINUED ON PAGE 22

terrorism. Needed is an end to pseudocommitments given and broken, lines in sand that are meaningless, deflections, distractions and general disinterest in being a moral leader. Needed, in short, is straight talk – a remoralization of the international conversation, blunt assessments of what is right and what is intolerable in any society. Needed is a discussion of why tolerance of differences in faith is not only preferable, but is actually the only basis on which civil society can endure. Theocracies that default to ruthless, totalitarian, oppressive and self-destructive rule are inherently unstable. Capricious killings are no way to rule. And most of those in Iraq – and globally – understand that. What they need most is global confi rmation of the rightness – the legitimacy – of their fight for democratic self-rule, for peace that allows their children to grow up and not end up cannon fodder. What they need most is for the wider world to reinforce their belief in a future that is not dark. They need Western leaders to boldly stand with them – as Reagan stood against the Soviet’s “evil empire” – not instead to look away, dissolve, dissemble, and make excuses. Leadership – at home and abroad – is not about excuses. We saw where that approach – wishful thinking and appeasement – led in World War II. It led nowhere good. So, what are these principles that could reshape the wild oscillations across the Middle East, giving people of good heart a chance to prevail over the spread of hate? Honesty, courage, decency, candor and conviction. Winston Churchill said: “All the great things are simple, and many can be expressed in a single word: freedom, justice, honor, duty, mercy, hope.” The leaders of all countries the world over should lay claim to those principles, take the mantle of legitimacy from those who claim that religious violence serves any of those high-minded ideals. When that happens, the battle will turn – decisively. What are the tactics? First, speak honestly, for example about radical Islamic terrorism. Nothing justifies the violence we are seeing against innocents of all faiths. Distinguish that twisted, violent and ideologically motivated worldview – premised on hate, fear and violence – from the tolerant religious tenets held by most Muslims, Buddhists, Christians, Jews and civilized peoples everywhere. Until there is an honest discussion of what religious coexistence looks like,

22 | www.amac.us

why it is absolutely preferable to sectarian confrontation, and how pluralism benefits all, the topic goes undiscussed. Where civilized leaders have the high ground and should use it, they let it go. Second, bring the entire Arab world into this discussion, even as leaders of Jordan, Egypt, UAE and other countries begin to openly re-moralize, re-invigorate and re-open the discussion. Coordinate the message with Arab leaders, separating genuine good from patent evil, honestly discussing the inherently destructive nature of sectarian conflict. In short, do what Reagan did in remoralizing the discussion of violent and oppressive Soviet practices: Clarify what is tolerable and not tolerable, legitimate and illegitimate, dialogue versus destruction, earnestly held faith versus ideological terrorism. Then build an army of thinkers and bloggers, writers and talkers, believers in the idea of individual liberty, tolerance of those who have a peaceable faith, because we all honor the free will of people to believe what they are drawn to believe. There is no place for violence in that worldview. We need to help allies say so. Finally, recognize that the world we live in today is divided and confused. Part of that problem is age old, but part is new. The new part is technology. Arms are potentially more dangerous, so we must step up and reverse the slide toward things like nuclear proliferation. Modern communications are a twoedged sword. The Internet, Facebook, Twitter, and other social media can unite us or divide us. When the forces of evil use these tools to divide humanity from itself, to undermine civil society, we must meet the challenge directly, not shrink. As Edmund Burke once wrote: “All it takes for evil to prevail is for good people to do nothing.” So, we must stand up and act. We must use and help others to use these networking tools to change the conversation – to reinforce the idea that those noble principles of Churchill, Reagan, TR and by our own Founders – and even some Babylonian ancients, like Hammurabi’s insistence on the presumption of innocence – are timeless. Far from accepting the hopelessness embodied in rule by terror, we must seed hope and spread it. Civilized society has a long and promising future, but only if we stand up and say so, vocally envision it, fi rmly set the expectation for it, spread the value and method of making it so, and work collegially toward it – with conviction. We cannot, in the teeth of global disorder,

now give up, default to purely kinetic solutions, imagine that the battle is not worth the patience, conclude that conversation is not worth the time, or miss the chance to shape the future for the better. I come back to those Iraqis that we trained in the desert – drawn from wildly divergent religious faiths, disparate family traditions and geographies, different personal habits, languages and tortured pasts – and how they managed to learn, ultimately teaching themselves, that there was greater good in peace than recrimination. They knew that progress toward a brighter future could not be found in dividing on themselves, or defaulting to sectarian violence. That was self-destructive. And so here we are – and here they are – still battling for the future. This is not World War I or World War II, but it is a consequential moment for America and the world. The world is more divided than it has been for a long time – between those who respect differences of faith and those who do not, those who would kill to suppress ideas and those who believe ideas can stop the killing. America stands in a position of moral authority – because we believe in the triumph of tolerance, even though we possess the greatest kinetic force on the face of the planet. We must now give others the courage of their own convictions, offer the courage of our own, explain that the future belongs to those who abide the moral right, not those who demean it. The future belongs to those who respect innocence and will protect it, believe in the sanctity of human life and will stand for it, who envision order with peace, prosperity with respect, freedom with security. In sum, on our shoulders, we carry Lady Liberty. And it is an honor to do so. If we will not rise to the occasion now, who will and when? We are, after all, America. That we are the world’s leader is no accident. Our ancestors have bequeathed to us a legacy of exceptionalism, and we must now carry it forward. That is why, even now, we must press our own elected leaders to stand tall, to represent us well, to call upon their better angels to stop the slide toward indifference – and to lead with wisdom. That is how we will reclaim the future.

Robert B. Charles worked in the Reagan and Bush 41 White Houses, served as Counsel and Staff Director for US House Speaker Dennis Hastert and was Assistant Secretary of State under Colin Powell. He leads a consulting firm in Washington DC.

AMAC Foundation’s First Year... A Busy One! December 31, 2014 marked the end of the AMAC Foundation’s first full fiscal year, and it was a year of fast-paced development. The Foundation hit the ground running early in the year – a year that would give the organization a solid footprint in support of America’s seniors. With President Dan Weber overseeing the launch, the Foundation experienced a “baptism by fi re,” with the June, 2014 National Health Care Symposium in Washington, D.C. The Symposium was a highly-acclaimed two-day conference that brought together some of the most highly-regarded voices in America’s health care debate and focused attention on the problems facing health care in the years ahead.

The Foundation’s Online Presence Planning for the Symposium was a priority during the run up to its June 9 start, but there were other activities in play during that time. The Foundation’s two informational websites, MedicareReport.org a nd SocialSecurityReport.org, operated on a daily schedule, collecting and posting related news accounts providing a wealth of background information on these vital programs. The Foundation’s online presence was further strengthened in midyear by the launch of a multi-faceted website, A M AC Fou ndat ion .c om, designed to serve as a conduit for a const it uenc y seek i ng cu r rent i n f or m a t ion a b out a c t i v it ie s , schedules, and accomplishments. The Foundation’s quarterly newsletters are posted on the site to keep followers aware of accomplishments, and a separate project page is included on the site to provide information on initiatives as they unfold.

by Gerry Hafer

Dealing with Financing As a 501(c)(3) nonprofit, the Foundation needs to appeal to the public for funding to carry out its mission of building and delivering services that will enrich the lives of America’s seniors. This mission involves providing information and education designed to protect and ensure the financial security, health, and social lives of current and future mature Americans, and it’s a mission that provides focus to everything we do. The Foundation also got its feet wet, literally and figuratively, in the fundraising arena with the organization of its inaugural bass fi shing tournament on May 30 & 31 — an event that served to establish the Foundation as a true community partner. Coincident with that, AMAC’s Member Services Representatives implemented an opportunity for new and renewing members to become aware of the Foundation and to encourage their fi nancial support for its work. This latter step has proved enormously successful, and has enabled us to deliver productive services during our brief time as an organization. As our second year of operation u n folds, we’ve emba rked on a concentrated effort to encourage additional financial support from major f unding sources — ot her foundations, corporate contributors, etc. — with a pledge to build on our first-year success. As part of this approach, we’ve registered the Foundation on GuideStar, the nonprofit world’s premier information ser v ice specia lizing in reporting on U.S. nonprofit companies. The Foundat ion atta ined GuideSta r’s “Gold Level Participation” ranking, the highest level of participation available under the program.

Other Projects the Foundation is Taking On The Foundation is also presenting a seminar series designed to cover specific topics of importance to America’s seniors. For example, in 2014 we conducted three editions of our “Protecting Yourself from Investor Fraud” seminar, and we established a team of volunteers to support the Adult Literacy movement locally and across the nation. Planning for additional seminars in 2015 is addressing topics like “Technology for Seniors,” the first of which was held March 20 covering Windows 8 and the challenges many people face when experiencing this operating system for the first time. Likewise, we’ve partnered with Florida’s Senior Medicare Patrol on the delivery of seminars on “Preventing and Detecting Medicare Fraud,” the first edition of which took place on April 2. Our objective with this seminar approach is to progressively build the AMAC Foundation brand in small increments, while developing resources in the background for the major initiatives of the future. While our initial intent is to offer these projects locally in our Central Florida operating area, we have a long range objective of using the AMAC network and the Foundation website to propagate the information across the country. Another noteworthy accomplishment of the Foundation is that we now have two Certified Social Security Advisors on staff to handle questions submitted by a constituency hungry for personalized service. Cathy (C.J.) Miles and Smokey Wist attained certification in 2014, and are actively engaged with seniors needing information and clarification on issues affecting their lives.

Looking Ahead We’ve concluded our fi rst fiscal year as an organization, and we’ve been successful in producing effective deliverables. We’re all optimistic about what lies ahead and about what we fi rmly believe we’ll be able to offer in the way of services to our constituency – America’s seniors. Alternative Ballistics

A Game Changer for Police and Public Safety

A

call goes out across the radio – a domestic violence incident where a 15-year-old girl has a kitchen knife. She has already cut her mother and herself. As the officers pull up to the house, the mother is in the front yard covered in blood screaming, “My daughter is inside and has gone crazy. She has not taken her medication and has threatened her own life with the knife.” The officers approach the front door of the house. The last thing an officer wants to do in this situation is to use lethal force against a child. Does the officer have another option? As the nation wrestles with how to preserve public safety, protect the individual citizen and protect those who in turn protect us, few answers have yet surfaced. From recent events in Ferguson, Missouri, to situations like the scenario above, we are often caught on the horns of a dilemma. How can law enforcement address potentially deadly force without killing the aggressor, yet stay safe themselves during such encounters – which are all too common? But as we look forward, there are a few ideas that offer real hope. One new lethal force option, aptly named “The Alternative,” is quickly grabbing the attention of law enforcement at home and abroad. This new innovative bullet-capturing device (BCD), developed by Alternative Ballistics, represents a critical “missing link” between lethal force and less-lethal force. The Alternative works like an “air bag for a bullet,” knocking a suspect down while substantially reducing the lethal potential of the fi red bullet. By using The Alternative in appropriate situations, police are likely to prevent loss of life to the public at large, while reducing risk and liability.

by Dan Weber 26 | www.amac.us

Every day, law enforcement officials must be prepared to make splitsecond decisions, and in an escalating situation, time is of the essence. Given the unpredictable nature of the job, it is essential for officers to have all the tools necessary to de-escalate a hostile situation, while protecting themselves and the public. Here is how it works: The Alternative decreases the velocity of the bullet and allows the alloy projectile to impact the threat, lessening the bullet’s penetrating energy, or diffusing it in a way that deters penetration. Once the gun is fi red, the bullet embeds itself inside the alloy projectile with no chance of escape, simultaneously transferring its kinetic energy and propelling it toward the target. The docking automatically ejects from the weapon and the firearm returns to its normal function before it cycles in a new round (faster than the trigger can be pulled again). The officer can then follow up with a live round immediately with no further manipulation to their weapon if the threat continues. The Alternative sits in a pouch on the officer’s belt for immediate use if needed. It is designed to allow for fluid, one-handed removal of the device and the subsequent seating of The Alternative onto the top of the weapon within seconds. Most importantly, this can be accomplished without the danger created by an officer removing his or her eyes and weapon from the threat in a lethal force encounter. According to public records, The Alternative has been thoroughly and independently tested with years of law enforcement and Special Forces feedback on design and function. Independent testing was also conducted at Chesapeake Testing in Belcamp, Maryland, as a true inflection point for law enforcement and public confidence in law enforcement. A portion of their

executive summary offers insight: “Alternative Ballistics’ bullet capture device system allows a standard weapon to be converted within seconds. The system is designed for use in scenarios where lethal force is warranted, but offers another option to resolve the situation. The individual will be incapacitated due to the blunt force of the impact, but with a diminished risk of death when compared to the use of bullets.” Despite the positive reception it’s received from various groups, including law enforcement in Ferguson, Missouri, critics assert that The Alternative could actually be dangerous for officers, who often only have a split second to make a decision to shoot. To assuage this concern, Alternative Ballistics CEO Christian Ellis says: “Under no circumstances do we suggest the use of The Alternative when the suspect has a firearm or when the officer has to react instantaneously to protect life and limb. We are adamant in our belief that a law enforcement officer is under no obligation to put his life at risk unnecessarily. This product was conceived and developed always with that in mind.” We cannot, as a group or as individuals, halt the flow of negative news that is generated by the media or political world. We can, however, celebrate both together and as individual Americans, when innovation, good heart, patriotic spirit and a sense of higher purpose generate good news – and here is one instance. God bless those who keep thinking about the greater good, the higher calling that prompts such thoughtful and meaningful innovations. And let us keep hoping Americans of all stripes and values, left, right, middle and any other persuasion, keep finding ways to preserve, protect and celebrate long steps forward – in short, game-changing good news like The Alternative. ★

AMAC on Capitol Hill

AMAC Sounds the Alarm on Social Security Disability Trust runs out of money in 2016

O

n Capitol Hill, Social Security is commonly referred to as the “third rail” of politics. This metaphor appropriately depicts just how politically and culturally charged the issue has become. Making meaningful strides to modernize and strengthen Social Securit y through legislation is a substantial undertaking, but AMAC has made guaranteeing Social Security its chief advocacy goal. AMAC’s growing presence and recognition in Washington, D.C. has already helped to shed light on the current fiscal problems and looming insolvency facing the program; yet, AMAC is committed to going one step further. By putting forth viable solutions, AMAC believes we can ensure Social Security’s continuation for future generations of mature Americans and senior citizens. To draw attention to this issue, AMAC held a Social Security Working Group on March 4, 2015, at the U.S. Capitol. The Social Security Working Group featured participation from AMAC President Dan Weber, notable Members of Congress – including Reps. Marsha Blackburn (TN07), Diane Black (TN-06), Keith Rothfus (PA-12), Frank Guinta (NH-01), Jim Renacci (OH-16) and Tom Reed (NY-23) – and policy professionals in the field of Social Security. Stephen Moore, Chief Economist at The Heritage Foundation, moderated the discussion, which gave participants an opportunity to present their ideas about what should be done to ensure the longterm solvency of the program. Without serious structural changes, SSDI will have no money to pay benefits owed come 2017. However, Members of Congress and experts at AMAC’s Social Security Working Group agreed that this threat can be thwarted. While many lawmakers and President Obama are content to continue to kick the SSDI can down the road by reallocating funds from the Old-Age and Survivors Insurance (OASI) Fund, or the general Social Security fund, to the Disability Insurance Fund, this solution will not solve SSDI’s

by Caroline Rayburn 28 | www.amac.us

underlying problems, which include a growing number of beneficiaries, a declining trust fund income and rampant waste, fraud and abuse. By 2033, both the SSDI and OASI funds will be depleted, and millions of older Americans will be left struggling to make ends meet. “I don’t want a senior to open an envelope in 2033 saying we have no resources for you,” said Representative Guinta. The fact remains that in order to preserve Social Security for future generations, immediate solutions are needed. A common theme emerged during the working group as legislators agreed that “robbing Peter to pay Paul,” in regard to the reallocation of funds from OASI to SSDI, is not the right way forward. Echoing these sentiments, Dr. Jason Fichtner, Senior Research Fellow at the Mercatus Center, commended the House of Representatives for passing a new rule that prohibits SSDI from borrowing funds from OASI unless Congress acts to improve the program’s long-term finances. This sign of good faith by House leaders shows that some in Congress are taking the future of the program seriously. Participants had plenty to say about what Congress might consider when it comes to getting SSDI back on track. According to Fichtner, only 0.5% of people enrolling in the disability program actually return to work. “One of the problems we have with SSDI is that it’s not a program designed to get people back into the labor force,” said Fichtner. Congress has contributed to this problem by loosening the eligibility standards for SSDI enrollment and discouraging those who are able to return to work to do so. Romina Boccia, a Heritage Foundation Fellow in Federal Budgetary Affairs, shared in these concerns. “We are aware that even though health has improved today, we still have one out of every 20 working-age Americans in the disability program,” said Boccia. While Congress will have to think seriously about the disability program in the short-term, how Social Security should be fortified for the long-term continues to be debated by those on the Right and the Left. Should we cut benefits? Should

we raise the age of retirement? Should we encourage workers to save more of their own money for retirement? Should we create a new investment vehicle for the workers who don’t have access to a 401K or pension plan? AMAC’s “Social Security Guarantee” makes its own recommendations about what Congress should do, and you can learn more about that proposal at amac. us/social-security. Members of Congress came ready to offer their own ideas as well. “We need to be thoughtful, we need to be pragmatic, we need to be visionary and we need to be bold and talk about these ‘third rail’ issues,” said Representative Guinta. Representat ive Blackbur n discussed her own bold initiative, the “Savings for Seniors Act,” which would prevent Congress from spending OASI funds on non-Social Security programs. All of the legislators and policy experts at AMAC’s Social Security Working Group agreed that increasing the tax burden on working Americans is not a responsible option. Confident that Social Security can be saved without raising taxes, AMAC’s Dan Weber urged Congress to consider minor changes to the program that will put it on a stable path and guarantee benefits for everyone – especially lowincome beneficiaries. By focusing on solutions, AMAC’s Social Security Working Group enabled a productive dialogue to take place just steps away from the very chambers where legislative action must occur in order to save this critical program. Few individuals have been bold enough to tackle this issue head-on, but the insight and input contributed by lawmakers and policy professionals at the working group demonstrates a commitment between the public and private sectors to work together. It is AMAC’s hope that this event will be the catalyst Congress needs to make tough choices now so that older Americans can have the quality of life and dignity they deserve in retirement. AMAC will continue to take the lead on this issue and to advocate for legislative solutions that help – not hurt – older Americans. ★

Summer Road Trips Prepare for Your Journey to Maximize the Fun

A

re you thinking of taking a road trip this summer? You’re not alone. Gas prices are lower than in the past, making the cost of a trip in the car more affordable. In addition, many of today’s cars are equipped with the technology and amenities that make it more appealing to spend extended time in your car. But there are things you should consider before you head out on the open road. Take some time to review these travel tips, because preparing in advance can help ensure that you enjoy the journey and get to your destination safely. Safe driving starts before you even leave the driveway. Securing luggage, maintaining vehicle balance and keeping clear lines of sight from the driver’s seat are a good practice. When packing the car, spread out the load so the weight is evenly distributed. Make sure you maintain a proper line of sight with your rear-view and side-view mirrors and windows. Are you using a roof rack? If so, know your rack’s weight limit by referring to your car’s owner’s manual or the manual that came with the roof rack. In 2012, an estimated 421,000 people were injured in motor vehicle crashes involving a distracted driver, according to the National Highway and Traffic Safety Administration. We know that cell phones are a distraction and should remain off while driving. Other passengers and kids in the back seat can also pose a distraction. Establish “zones” where all passengers in the car should remain while the car is in motion. Unsecured pets can also cause you to lose focus while driving. Secure your pets appropriately and make sure they cannot run about the car.

Do you know the route you are taking to get to your destination? It may help to familiarize yourself with the directions prior to the trip. Relying solely on GPS can lead to dangerous last minute turns and lane changes. Once you are on the road, make sure you are not following the car in front of you too closely. Increasing your following distance can help give you time to react when someone brakes in front of you. The National Traffic Safety Council recommends a minimum three-second following distance. Cruise control can be a helpful tool on long trips, but relying too heavily on it can lead to driver’s losing focus. This brings us to our next tip, regarding resting. Rest periodically. W hen traveling long distances, it’s important to take frequent breaks to help maintain focus

and avoid fatigue. Continuing to try and drive once you’re tired is risky and should be avoided. Take care to avoid theft while on the road. Stow your valuables out of sight when you leave your vehicle, and always park in a visible location.

Saluting Our Veterans and Active Duty Military

Honoring America’s Heroes by Rebecca Weber

M

illions of Americans have made tremendous sacrifices for our country’s freedom. They have suffered physical and emotional injury; they have left their families and loved ones behind, and far too many have made the ultimate sacrifice. These are our nation’s heroes. Today, many more step out and say, “I am ready to serve.” The actions of these brave young men and women should be a constant reminder to us that a great price has been paid for our freedom. From Valley Forge to the swampy trenches in France, from the jungles of Vietnam to the mountains of Afghanistan, let us never forget the millions who have fought and died on the battlefield; let us honor those who stand up to protect America, and let us thank God for His protection and ask for His continued blessings over our country and for those who continue to serve. AMAC salutes our veterans and active-duty military for the sacrifices they have made and for the courage it takes to defend our great country. AMAC is humbly grateful to these brave American patriots.

Breakthrough technology converts phone calls to captions.

New amplified phone lets you hear AND see the conversation. The Captioning Telephone converts phone conversations to easy-to-read captions for individuals with hearing loss.

A simple idea… made possible with sophisticated technology. If you have trouble understanding a call, the Captioning Telephone can change your life. During a phone call the words spoken to you appear on the phone’s screen – similar to closed captioning on TV. So when you make or receive a call, the words spoken to you are not only amplified by the phone, but scroll across the phone so you can listen while reading everything that’s said to you. Each call is routed through a call center, where computer technology – aided by a live representative – generates immediate voice-to-text translations. The captioning is real-time, accurate and readable. Your conversation is private and the captioning service doesn’t cost you a penny. Captioned Telephone Service (CTS) is regulated and funded by the Federal Communications Commission (FCC) and is designed exclusively for individuals with hearing loss. In order to use CTS in your home, you must have standard telephone

service and high-speed Internet connectivity where the phone will be used. Callers do not need special equipment or a captioning phone in order to speak with you.

Hello grand ma this is kaitlynn ho w are you today I wa nted to tell you tha nk you for the birth day card

Finally… a phone you can use again. The Captioning Telephone is also packed with features to help make phone calls easier.

“For years I avoided phone calls because I couldn’t understand the caller… now I don’t miss a thing!”

SEE what you’ve been missing! The keypad has large, easy to use buttons. You get adjustable volume amplification along with the ability to save captions for review later. It even has an answering machine that provides you with the captions of each message. See for yourself with our exclusive home trial. Try the Captioning Telephone in your own

Do you get discouraged when you hear your telephone ring? Do you avoid using your phone because hearing difficulties make it hard to understand the person on the other end of the line? For many Americans the telephone conversation – once an important part of everyday life – has become a thing of the past. Because they can’t understand what is said to them on the phone, they’re often cut off from friends, family, doctors and caregivers. Now, thanks to innovative technology there is finally a better way.

ow many years did America wait for the X-ray (also called Röntgen radiation), the polio vaccine, Magnetic Resonance Imaging (MRI), or arthroscopic surgery? The answer: too many. But American know-how and dedication to creative medical innovation eventually delivered the goods. Well, as fate would have it, we live in miraculous times. Against the odds, at a time of great need in mental health – particularly for our wounded warriors returning from combat with the invisible wounds of post-traumatic stress disorder – there is now new hope. After decades of research, the Newport Brain Research Laboratory (NBRL) and Brain Treatment Center (BTC) have pioneered a treatment for PTSD that has everyone’s attention. Ty pica lly, admission of brain anomalies, from variations in autism to clinical depression, from high anxiety to chronic sleeplessness, from addictive behavior to PTSD, has carried two identifiers – a sense of social disapproval, or stigma, and a sense of inveterate discouragement. Why discouragement? Because effective treatments have been elusive and so often ineffective. And no one has been more profoundly left in harm’s way than America’s veterans. In all wars, America’s combat veterans have stood watch for us – protected us, made our freedom possible, taken the hit for us. But for the sacrifices of these warriors, America would not be America. They have returned to their grateful Nation, communities and families, with visible and invisible wounds. Not to admit this is to miss the magnitude of their service, to undervalue the risks they took and sacrifices made, and to

underestimate, or not understand, the ultimate trauma of war. Some wounds are readily treatable, while others are enigmatic, frustrating in both diagnosis and treatment. Clearly, the most vexing of modern times – if not of all times – is what we all now generally call PTSD. PTSD is, in fact, a collection of clinical conditions. But the diagnosis, whether official or informal, is difficult to resolve. Symptoms run the gamut from rage to sleeplessness, paranoia to discomfort with many people or congested places, noise sensitivities to the literal clamping up of muscles, or depression to anxiety. Until now, there has been a nearuniversal sense that PTSD was a disease or condition that was often untreatable, partially treatable, or resistant to long term (enduring and complete) treatment. The violence associated with the disease in public dialogue only further dissuaded veterans and lay persons from admitting that they had the condition, that is, were (in fact) still engaged in battle – this one on home soil – to control thoughts, anxiety, paranoia, distrust, sensitivity, sleeplessness or the whipsaw of unpredictable emotions which, like it or not, attended time in service or some stressful or traumatic experience. The Department of Veterans Affairs (VA) and others seeking to ameliorate symptoms have tended to rely on short term, temporary and often incomplete measures, since double- blind studies have been slow and other treatments difficult to prove. Drugs of different kinds have been the treatment of choice, many falling into the category of SSRIs or “selective serotonin reuptake inhibitors.” While patients can be responsive to these drugs, there is also a hit-or-miss element to this approach. Among drugs often involved are SSRIs sertraline and paroxetine, and

non-SSRIs: venlafaxine, nefazodone, trazodone and mirtazapine. For some, these will offer relief, but the historical record shows that for others, the options are few and relief unavailing. According to leading veterans associations, roughly 22 ser v ice members commit suicide a day, an intolerably high number of patriotic Americans who are, in effect, suffering to an extreme that they apparently fi nd intolerable and inescapable. This is why genuine hope is so welcome, and a genuine solution for so many, is now apparently becoming available. In California, double-blind studies conducted by researchers from the University of California San Diego are unfolding to validate and further elucidate the treatment that now appears to hold enormous hope for all veterans. In fact, the treatment – known as BTC’s Magnetic Resonance Treatment (or MRT) – is already being offered freeof-charge to many veterans, drawn from communities coast to coast. The Brain Treatment Center (BTC) is located in Newport Beach, California, and its innovation is breathtaking. As is its record of success, in part, based on the alignment of existing technologies, such as the EEG, EKG and TMS, and in part based on thousands of new algorithms that bring tailored outcomes to those suffering from PTSD – with extraordinary reliability. In recent months, the non-invasive MRT treatment has been celebrated by articles in the Washington Post, and in selective interviews with broadcast television, but the technique – based on nearly 30 years of research and being officially validated in controlled studies – appears to have ameliorated PTSD symptoms in a short time for more than 100 veterans, that is, for nearly all who have been treated. A mere two years ago, the notion that such a treatment existed – with such a profoundly significant record for successful improvement of the symptoms of PTSD, and for parallel treatment of other traumatic brain injury and conditions – was science fiction, almost unthinkable. Today, it is science fact. How does this path-breaking treatment work? With such a high level of clinical success, and with such a wide range of brain disorders being successfully addressed, what is the science behind the BTC’s MRT

treatment? The neurology experts and medical doctors who are pioneering this treatment, which appears to be a genuine inflection point in medicine, are both able to explain – and in some ways not even able to explain – how the process works. At root, the process involves taking EEGs and EKGs, using the FDA-approved TMS technology, and then marrying the existing technologies to insights about how various frequency levels and characteristics in the EEGs and EKGs align to present a path to carefully tailored neural stimulation, and measured outcomes. Tens of thousands of EEGs have been studied, and their relationship to EKG waves is also a variable in the larger process. But one thing is sure. The science is exactly that – science. No one needs to tell a story or offer their past, a distinction from other diagnoses collected by the VA. Veterans with symptoms need only have the EEG and EKG done, and then the concentration is on tailoring the BTC’s MRT treatment to the individual, getting a near term turnabout in condition – and they seem highly effective at getting that turnabout. The written and spoken testimonials by veterans and others are available to the public, and readily accessible, as are the doctors themselves. The process seems to involve restoring the long wave patterns of the brain with magnets, and simultaneously improving concentration and eliminating the jagged side-waves on the EEG that reveal symptoms often tied to PTSD. What matters most is the clear-headed assessment of so many veterans that this works. And that is where we give a nod to A merica n ingenuit y a nd t he commitment to America’s veterans. The BTC’s MRT treatment has been offered to a limited number of veterans, all for free. It is an innovation of real and lasting promise. The U.S. Congress last year insisted that the VA study the technolog y, including express direction in the end of year Omnibus Budget Bill, with an eye to making BTC’s MRT moda lit y accessible nationwide over time. The number of veterans aware of this source of genuine hope is growing. Many veterans groups, members of Congress and policy leaders in the medical world are expectant. Many hope specifically that DoD, VA and the medical profession at large will recognize that – as with

X-rays, the polio vaccine, MRI and arthroscopy – the time has come for MRT, and the results will be replicable in all venues. Members of Congress concerned about the issue now appear focused on getting the VA and other hospitals around the country to pioneer or pilot the effort for veterans who are continuing to suffer, and there may be in excess of a million such warfighters still in need of such treatment, reaching back to the Vietnam War veterans and beyond. The hope is that the DoD, VA and other hospitals will soon reach back for the treatment. While SSRIs and other modalities work for some veterans, many others are still suffering – with and without treatment – and their suffering now has a real chance for resolution, for a positive outcome that many have prayed for, hoped on, and in some cases almost given up on. The public record is persuasive and the testimonials and medical commentary seem nothing if not compelling. Even the Washington Post called this development a “miracle” of sorts, and tracked veterans who had experienced success with the BTC’s MRT innovation. So, the real question is this: How many more of our brave and otherregarding combat veterans, or those who endured extreme stress and suffered PTSD in Iraq, Afghanistan, Kosovo, Vietnam, Korea or elsewhere in the world, must we lose before we sit up and

take notice? How many more days must go by losing 22 young people – of such noble character, commitment and love of country – before we say, “Enough!”? While no treatment for any disease or condition is ever one hundred percent successful, this is a turning point, a page turner, a game changer and another God-given solution at a time when solutions are more needed than ever. We do not today, any longer, question the X-ray or live with uncertainty about broken bones. We do not suffer polio, as we did in the early days of some still alive among us. We no longer have to live without knowing what the MRI can show us, and with what arthroscopic surgery can help cure. And at last, in a story of American can-do, although the story is just getting out, we do not need to accept that PTSD is a death sentence, that returning veterans have no choice but to live with this condition. As the U.S. Congress, emerging media heavyweights, medical professionals and a growing number of veterans are proclaiming, this is “the real McCoy,” and it offers hope in a time of trouble, promises in a time of peril and genuine relief for those who need it most, our veterans. Godspeed to those at BTC and NBRL, Dr. Jin, Dr. Murphy, Dr. Liu, and others who are leading the way into a brighter future!

Adventurous Nomads Could you imagine selling your home and moving into a traveling recreational vehicle?

T

hat’s exactly what Jane Kenny and her husband Jack did to fulfill their retirement travel dreams. It was a big decision for two seniors to make. They researched options, sold their house, put their money in the bank, and went RVing for one year. They agreed that if either party did not like it, they would buy a home and use the RV for part-time travel. Finding the lifestyle extremely suitable, Jane and her husband became RV experts. They conduct various RV lifestyle seminars and currently have three RV guide

by D. J. Wilson 42 | www.amac.us

books on the market. In her how-to book entitled RV Retirement in the 21st Century, Jane Kenny provides valuable information for using an RV to enhance retirement. She discusses vital topics such as affordability, capability and compatibility, and includes valuable check lists and informationa l resources. Kenny explains that “most people who are engaged in RV travel are conservative, freedomloving Americans…the lifestyle is natural for them. They grew up with camping vacations, use a camper when they go fishing and hunting, and they share a deep love and loyalty to America the Beautiful.” “Full-time life on the road is wonderfully uncomplicated,” writes Kenny. There are no concerns for property taxes, gas & electric bills

and other costly home-related expenses. As an added bonus for many, gone are the days of having to mow the lawn. Modern RVs are spacious and comfortable. In fact, many motor homes and fifth wheels are equipped with slide-out spaces to increase usable square footage. The interiors are attractive and well-planned and contain many of the same contemporary amenities found in typical homes. Modern technology has allowed for power steering, power brakes and automatic transmissions. With practice and proper training, anyone comfortable behind the wheel can easily adapt to driving a larger vehicle. According to Kenny, “Life in an RV lends itself to warm, mild climates. Therefore, wintertime fi nds many RVers in the broad swath of Sun Belt states. In summer, RVers travel north to enjoy the great scenic beauty of the lakes and mountains and to escape the oppressive July/August heat of the south.” There are campgrounds and RV parks across the country. Kenny describes the friendly atmosphere often encountered in RV environments. “Whether people are in for a single night or a couple of weeks, in season or off season,

camaraderie prevails.” She cites impromptu social gatherings and scheduled activities as common occurrences at campgrounds and parks. RVers may choose their desired level of interaction as privacy is also deeply respected. Life in the RV allows freedom to go wherever one’s heart desires. It is Kenny who fittingly uses the phrase “Adventurous Nomads” to describe their fulfi lling lifestyle. Newfound independence on wheels allows them to visit family, meet with and entertain friends, fellowship with folks in the RV community, and spend quality time discovering America the Beautiful together. In her book, Kenny notes some of the most panoramic places to which they have traveled: along the dramatic Pacific Coast Highway, deep into California’s Redwood Forest, through New Mexico’s Valley of Fires, beside sweeping views of America’s cornfields, along the beautiful shores of Key West and more. Favorable gas prices are drawing new attention to RV travel and make it a viable travel option for seniors. One doesn’t have to purchase a vehicle to enjoy the experience; rentals are a great way to start.

Kenny points out that renters should read the agreement in advance to learn about charges and rental fees. It is important to secure adequate insurance if not included. With an RV, vacation options are seemingly endless. Newbies may choose to visit one of America’s National Parks or head to a KOA campground for recreation opportunities. Beginners are likely to be hooked on this new life of adventure. Kenny says it best, “Whether using the RV full-time or part-time, all agree that, when you hit the road with the trailer or motor home, there are some pleasantly surprising results.”

Away We Go! Cooking on Vacation

T

he absence of cooking and cleaning seems to be the very defi nition of vacation. However, many families, including mine, spend their summer get-away in a rental property. As my family tends to grow tired of eating out, and because we enjoy relaxing around the table organizing or rehashing our day, I usually plan on cooking most of our meals. But, preparing dishes in a beach house at the shore, a cottage on the lake or in an RV traversing the country can be challenging. Though often touted as having “fully equipped” kitchens, rentals tend to lack the tools needed to turn out hassle-free meals. After years of renting vacation homes, I have found that having a game plan and bringing along a few must-have essentials will ensure less time at the stove and more time on the beach. Of course, if you are traveling by plane, this approach may be impractical, but if you are journeying by car and want to avoid opening a bottle of wine with a screwdriver or using multiple pots to cook a pound of pasta, pack these items along with your suntan lotion and swimsuit:

Knife: Most rental homes have flimsy, dull knives that make mincing and dicing feel like a dangerous chore. Bring your own sharp chef’s knife in order to make chopping vegetables for a stir-fry or slicing a grilled London broil a breeze.

After years of renting vacation homes, I have found that having a game plan and bringing along a few must-have essentials will ensure less time at the stove and more time on the beach.

Blender: A must have for the allimportant umbrella-bearing frozen drinks, but also a bonus when preparing breakfast smoothies, pureed soups, dips, marinades and salad dressings.

Large stock pot: Most rental kitchens provide several pots, but rarely one big enough to accommodate several lobsters procured from the local fishmonger, a dozen ears of fresh farmstand corn or the amount of spuds needed for Grandma’s potato salad. And, in a pinch, a large pot can also be used to toss a salad or serve a crowd.

54 | www.amac.us

Non-stick griddle: Most frying pans found in rental homes tend to be a bit dented and much more stick than nonstick. Bringing one along can assist greatly in the preparation of pancakes, eggs, French toast and grilled cheese.

before you head out. If small amounts of herbs, spices, condiments or pantry staples are required, bring them from home – measuring out the amounts that are needed and placing in individual plastic bags or containers.

Ideas: Forethought is key! Pre-planning simple and quick menus saves valuable time and ensures that you won’t fi nd yourself needing unavailable tools or ingredients. Make copies of your recipes and compile a grocery list

Extras: If you have room, and depending on what you will be preparing, consider these additional items: corkscrew, pepper mill, tongs, non-stick spatula, meat thermometer.

Kathie’s Kitchen Chopped Salad ❏ 1 – 15 oz. can cannellini beans – drained and rinsed ❏ 2 small green peppers – cut into bite-sized pieces ❏ 1 medium cucumber – peeled and cut into bite-sized pieces ❏ 2 cups coarsely chopped red cabbage

❏ 1½ cups radishes – quartered ❏ ¼ cup extra virgin olive oil ❏ ¼ cup fresh lemon juice ❏ 1 Tbsp. honey ❏ ½ tsp. salt ❏ ¼ tsp. pepper ❏ 8 oz. feta cheese – cubed ❏ ¼ cup chopped fresh Italian parsley

Place beans, green peppers, cucumbers, red cabbage and radishes in separate zip-lock bags. In a small bowl, whisk together olive oil, lemon juice, honey, salt and pepper. Pour 1 – 2 Tbs. dressing into each zip-lock bag. Seal and refrigerate for 2 – 4 hours, turning bags occasionally. Arrange vegetables and dressing, along with feta cheese, in sections on a platter. Sprinkle with parsley. Serves 8.

Frozen Limeade Margaritas

Linguini with Red Clam Sauce ❏ 1½ cups water - divided ❏ ½ cup white wine ❏ 4 lbs. fresh clams – scrubbed ❏ 2 Tbs. olive oil ❏ 1 small onion – chopped ❏ 5 garlic cloves – minced ❏ ½ tsp. red pepper flakes

❏ 2 cups crushed tomatoes ❏ 2 tsps. tomato paste ❏ 2 Tbs. chopped fresh basil ❏ 2 Tbs. chopped fresh oregano ❏ 2 Tbs. chopped fresh parsley ❏ 1 lb. linguini – cooked al dente

In a large pot, bring ½ cup water and wine to a boil. Add clams. Cover and steam until clams open (discard any that do not) – approximately 2 minutes. Remove clams from shells and coarsely chop. Strain broth and set aside. In the same pot, sauté onion and garlic in oil, over medium heat until tender – taking special care that the garlic does not burn. Add 2 cups of the broth, 1 cup water and red pepper flakes. Bring to a boil. Add crushed tomatoes and tomato paste. Bring, once again, to a boil. Add clams and herbs and stir to combine. Add cooked linguini to pot, and gently simmer for 2 minutes. Remove from heat. Serves 4 – 6.

❏ 1 cup tequila ❏ ¼ cup triple sec ❏ 1 Tbsp. agave nectar ❏ ½ tsp. salt

❏ 1 – 12 oz. can frozen limeade concentrate ❏ 6 cups crushed ice ❏ Margarita salt and sliced limes - optional

Combine the first 6 ingredients in a blender, and puree until smooth. Serve in salt-rimmed glasses garnished with sliced limes. Serves 4 – 6.

Grilled Caprese Sandwich ❏ 4 slices rustic white bread ❏ 1 – 2 Tbs. butter – softened ❏ 2 Tbsp. prepared basil pesto

❏ 8 oz. fresh mozzarella – shredded ❏ 2 – 3 Roma tomatoes – seeded and sliced

Heat non-stick griddle over medium heat. On each slice of bread, spread butter on one side – pesto on the other. Place two slices of bread, buttered side down, on the griddle. Top with ½ of the shredded cheese, then sliced tomato, then remaining cheese. Cover with remaining slices of bread – butter side up. Press down to adhere. Cover loosely with foil, and cook for 5 minutes or until browned. Flip over, and continue cooking, uncovered, for 3 – 4 minutes or until cheese is melted and bread is golden brown. Serves 2.

Music from the Big Band Era Continues To Attract Retired Seniors

T

he retired members of America’s Greatest Generation survived the ravages of world wars and spearheaded a host of technological advances like computers and cell phones. They helped rid the world of diseases like polio, and established foreign policy that influenced culture worldwide. These days, many of them reside in retirement communities or in locales where they can reflect on the music that shaped their leisure time while they accomplished great things. Some of the most enduring music from the years that shaped the lives of these seniors will be forever known as the Big Band Era, and it’s characterized by the music from the Great American Songbook—the most influential collection of music from the 20th Century. Basking in unforgettable classics from artists like Glenn Miller, Paul Whiteman, Jim & Tommy Dorsey, Duke Ellington, Count Basie, Cab Calloway, Les Brown, and many others, gives these aficionados the opportunity to close their eyes and remember dancing at the large dance pavilions of the time. For example, they can be transported back in time to venues like the Palomar Ballroom in Los Angeles, Detroit’s Vanity, the Trianon in Chicago, Roseland in New York City, and the Alhambra Ballroom at Rhode Island’s Crescent Park. And they vividly recall the Lindy, Jitterbug, Charleston, Shag, and other specialty dances of the day. Unfortunately, many of the venues of this era have fallen into disrepair or have been torn down, and a visit to a modern-day dance floor will confi rm that the dance steps of the 21st century

are nothing like the moves of the Big Band dance floors. Still, there are “ghost bands” touring in an almost vain attempt to keep the spirit alive. The music of Tommy Dorsey and Glenn Miller lives on in these performances, and there are many smaller jazz bands around the country headed by musicians formerly part of the renowned troupes. Each year, a segment of America’s seniors attempt to rekindle their musical memories by attending one or more of the 60 music festivals held across the country. The Monterey or Newport Jazz Festivals are premium examples of these nostalgic events. The music festival season begins annually in San Diego, moves up the California, Oregon,

and Washington coasts, and then shifts to Denver, Chicago and Sedona, before winding down to the free New Orleans French Quarter festival that attracts some 800,000 music fans. This landmark event features 125 bands on stages scattered throughout the French Quarter, and is followed by similarly structured jazz festivals at Jacksonville and Clearwater, Florida. The festival season winds up back at San Diego, concluding as part of the Thanksgiving season. So, if you want to get in on the festival action, all you need to do is a little bit of research—Google your favorite venue or act, check out their schedule dates, and get out and join the music! ★

Bad News For Survival Food Something just happened that explains why tons and tons of survival food are literally flying off warehouse shelves. e’ve never seen anything like it before. Right now, our truckers can barely keep up with the rapidly rising demand. We have even been getting reports that this food is actually sold out in many parts of the country – and it might stay that way for a while.

What the heck is going on?

We were determined to figure out why so much survival food has been disappearing… and where it was going. So we did some digging around on our own and it paid off. Wait until you see what we found out. It caught us totally by surprise because it involves a well-known agency that is responsible for aiding Americans in times of crisis. The possibility that they could have something to do with a potential survival food shortage made no sense to us … unless they knew something we didn’t. We were determined to discover the truth for ourselves – and for you. Now, it was impossible to say precisely what these people were up to, but we knew they must be planning for something really big – something really out of the ordinary.

We have the proof in writing!

Just as we were beginning our investigation, our warehouse manager

was shocked to receive a request from an official of that very same agency.

They wanted to know:

• How much survival food did we have on hand? • How quickly we can produce more? • Where is inventory kept? • Just how fast could they get their hands on it? We don’t know about you, but any time outsiders starts prying into the affairs of private businesses like ours, we can’t help but get concerned – and frankly, we are. After all, here’s an agency we never heard from before suddenly asking questions about foods intended solely for emergency use in a disaster. Certainly makes you think, doesn’t it? Well, we have a few questions of our own. We’d like someone to tell us exactly what is going on here. Is there really a catastrophe waiting in the wings? Has terrorist activity been discovered in the U.S.? Is the nation’s food supply threatened?

Know what we heard?

It’s like talking to a wall. But we’re going to keep the pressure on until we get some believable information. The truth is, revealing a plot like this could land us in some serious hot water. There’s a reason they’re not going public with any details. But we are absolutely convinced they are up to something. And we think you and every other American really deserves an explanation. Listen, we all know most people will be woefully unprepared when disaster strikes. The smart among us prefer to take steps to ensure that in a crisis, we won’t be relying on someone else to take care of our families. That’s our job.

Smart seniors are stocking up on 25-year survival food.

Anyone not taking action will find themselves in the same boat as millions of other brainwashed souls who go through life thinking everything is fine. Until one day it is definitely not fine and they are OUT OF LUCK...and in big trouble!

Go to GETFOOD65.COM right now. We just posted a free video presentation that exposes the truth. You can view it right now at GETFOOD65.COM. We have to warn you that you’ll probably think what it shows is really disturbing. Because it sure seems like the American people are being kept in the dark about something that could threaten not only our way of life, but even our very lives. And that is just plain wrong.

Go to GETFOOD65.COM now and you’ll also learn what is the #1 item to hoard in a crisis and why supplies of this critical item are so low in some places or even worse, completely gone – unavailable at any price. See this video while you still can. Watch the controversial video that thousands of smart patriots have already seen in recent days. Do not wait. Go to GETFOOD65.COM and discover the #1 item most critical in a crisis. Go watch this very important video now at GETFOOD65.COM before they force us to shut it down. Get the facts. What you’ll learn could literally save your family’s lives.

LETTERS Dentist Recommends Vinegar

I

have some useful advice that others may be interested in. When I got my Dentures several years ago, the Dentist told me use vinegar to get the plaque off them. So - about once a week I soak them in the wonder liquid and Presto - they sparkle. I have since gotten implants - Since I am not fond of the hygienist scraping the posts for cleaning - I clean them with Vinegar before going for my check-up. On my last visit to her, she couldn’t believe how clean they were and praised me for it! I then asked the Dentist that put the implants in if the vinegar would harm the metal posts and he informed me it is OK to use it. - D. L., New Braunfels, Tx.

Vinegar Diet helps mother of the Bride

T

his is kind of embarrassing, but here goes. My name is Sarah Pierce. I am 58 years old, and through the years (in my mind’s eye) I always thought I looked pretty decent. Especially so when our second daughter was married. I really considered myself a rather ‘smashing’ Mother of the Bride. That is, until the wedding pictures came back. I just couldn’t believe it. Here I am, definitely portly - not lean and svelte like I thought. Unfortunately the camera doesn’t lie. Since then, I heard about Emily Thacker’s Vinegar Diet and decided to give it a try. What surprised me most was how much I could eat yet I was losing weight and inches. It was like I was getting thin, thinner and thinner yet with the Vinegar Diet. I just thought you should know. - S. P., N. Canton, Oh.

Joke of the Month “Surely I can’t look that old” Have you ever been guilty of looking at others your own age and thinking, surely I can’t look that old. My name is Mary, and I was sitting in the waiting room for my first appointment with a new dentist. I noticed his diploma on the wall, which bore his full name. Suddenly, I remembered a tall, handsome, dark-haired boy with the same name had been in my high school class some 30-odd years ago. Could he be the same guy that I had a secret crush on way back then? Upon seeing him, however, I quickly discarded any such thought. This balding, gray-haired man with the deeply lined face was way too old to have been my classmate. After he examined my teeth, I asked him if he had attended Morgan Park High School . “Yes. Yes, I did. I’m a mustang,” he gleamed with pride. “When did you graduate?” I asked. “In 1975. Why do you ask?” “You were in my class!” I exclaimed. He looked at me closely. Then, he asked: “What did you teach?” Heard any good ones lately? Send them in!

Please submit your joke by emailing info@amac.us or mailing to Joke of the Month, c/o AMAC 5 Orville Drive, Suite 400, Bohemia, NY 11716. Your joke may be featured in our next magazine!

Chicago Doctor Invents Affordable Hearing Aid Outperforms Many Higher Priced Hearing Aids

Reported by J. Page

Chicago: Board-certified physician Dr. S. Cherukuri has done it once again with his newest invention of a medical grade ALL DIGITAL affordable hearing aid. This new digital hearing aid is packed with all the features of $3,000 competitors at a mere fraction of the cost. Now, most people with hearing loss are able to enjoy crystal clear, natural sound — in a crowd, on the phone, in the wind — without suffering through “whistling” and annoying background noise.

New Digital Hearing Aid Outperforms Expensive Competitors This sleek, lightweight, fully programmed hearing aid is the outgrowth of the digital revolution that is changing our world. While demand for “all things digital” caused most prices to plunge (consider DVD players and computers, which originally sold for thousands of dollars and today can be purchased for less), yet the cost of a digital medical hearing aid remains out of reach.

Satisfied Buyers Agree AIR is the Best Digital Value! “I am hearing things I didn’t know I was missing. Really amazing. I’m wearing them all the time” —Linda I., Indiana “Almost work too well. I am a teacher and hearing much better now” —Lillian B., California “I have used many expensive hearing aids, some over $5,000. The Airs have greatly improved my enjoyment of life” —Som Y., Michigan “I would definitely recommend them to my patients with hearing loss” —Amy S., Audiologist, Indiana

hearing aid comes with a full year’s supply of long-life batteries. It delivers crisp, clear sound all day long and the soft flexible ear buds are so comfortable you won’t realize you’re wearing them.

Try It Yourself At Home With Our 45-Day Risk-Free Trial Of course, hearing is believing and we invite you to try it for yourself with our RISK-FREE 45-Day home trial. If you are not completely satisfied, simply return it within that time period for a full refund of your purchase price.

Dr. Cherukuri knew that many of his patients would benefit but couldn’t afford the expense of these new digital hearing aids. Generally they are not covered by Medicare and most private health insurance. The doctor evaluated all the high priced digital hearing aids on the market, broke them down to their base components, and then created his own affordable version — called the MDHearingAid®AIR for its virtually invisible, lightweight appearance.

Thanks to BetterWOMAN, I’m winning the battle for

Frequent nighttime trips to the bathroom, embarrassing leaks and the inconvenience of constantly searching for rest rooms in public – for years, I struggled with bladder control problems. Clean up your toys! Teaching responsibility in the playroom

K

ids love to play. Many times, they fiddle with one toy and suddenly move onto something else. Often times, kids don’t bother to clean up. Suddenly, the playroom floor is piled high with toys. Desperate to get the room in order, well-meaning adults may end up cleaning up the toy mess for the children. Unfortunately, this can undermine goals of teaching responsibility. It should not be the parents’ or grandparents’ job to clean up after their children. If the kids are old enough to take the toys out to play with them, they should be taught the skills to put them away. Younger children may need some assistance, but as they grow so should their abilities to straighten up. Why clean up? Toys that are left on the floor may get broken, lost, thrown away, or eaten by the dog. Games and puzzles with missing pieces may become useless. Toys are expensive to buy and replace, so they ought to be well cared for. Adults must deliver clear instructions when it’s time to put the toys away. Clean up time is non-negotiable and everyone who played participates. When play time is over, don’t make cleaning a chore for your children or else they won’t want to do it. Turn straightening up into a fun game. Set a kitchen timer for 5 to 10 minutes to challenge the kids. See who can finish tidying up before it buzzes. Play fun and upbeat music to keep the clean-up momentum going. Do this as a daily ritual after playtime. Everyone who helps is treated as a winner. Be sure to provide children with easy ways to store and put away toys. Shelves, baskets, toy boxes, storage containers and closets are just a few great ideas. Choose child-friendly toy storage options so that kids can easily put things away. You don’t want any pinched fingers or any shelves which may tip over and hurt a child. Avoid over-organizing. If a child has to sort toys for a lengthy period of time before putting them away, cleaning up will become a drudgery. Kids want to please their parents and grandparents. Adults will offer children praise for positive attitudes and efforts, and steadily commend them on jobs well done. Occasionally, but not regularly, stickers or other material incentives may be given. Learning to respect their parents and grandparents, and to appreciate material things, will flourish from childhood into adulthood. ★ Article courtesy of Controlthemess.com, a free advice website for all aspects of home organization.
