Publisher’s Letter

AMAC... one million members strong By the year 2006 I had become convinced that the AARP, once a venerable institution, was no longer representing what I and many Americans believed in. We put together the idea that soon became the Association of Mature American Citizens, now widely known as AMAC. Because so many patriotic citizens like you joined, AMAC is a powerful voice for Freedom. We now are One Million Members Strong! AMAC listens to our members. We know you are for limited government, less government control and taxation, and individual freedom. Like you, AMAC believes our Constitution is the best document ever written by men for the governance of mankind, and we know we have a duty to protect it. You have told us, through our weekly polls, letters and emails how you think.

by Dan Weber President, Association of Mature American Citizens

People who believe in God and respect religion think differently than those who don’t.

People who believe in individual responsibility think differently than those who don’t.

People who believe in the work ethic and free enterprise think differently than those who don’t.

People who believe in the traditional old fashioned values of honesty, decency, charity and patriotism think differently than those who don’t.

We know you want our children, grandchildren and future generations to enjoy freedom, the prosperity that comes with it, and to have happiness in their lives. And that is what AMAC is working hard to ensure. One of the issues we are focused on is Social Security, which our members like and need. If we don’t act soon and fix it, taxes will have to increase and benefits will be cut by 23%. We have 19 years left to do something and the sooner we start the better. We have introduced the AMAC Social Security Guarantee. It guarantees Social Security will remain solvent for at least 75 years, provides higher benefits for low income households than they are receiving now, guarantees everyone will receive a minimum increase each year (unlike 2009 and 2010 when no one got an increase) and adds an ERA (Early Retirement Account) to allow all workers to put money aside for retirement- all without raising taxes. Soon we’ll be asking for your help in getting it put into law. (See page 34 for details). Please help us continue to grow by telling one more person about us!

Speaking Your Mind

Sound Off

“sound off” at www.amac.us

Americans are speaking out on AMAC’s website. Please visit www.amac.us to give us your views and to read what others are saying!

AMAC on Capitol Hill 

Concerned citizen says: I want to thank AMAC for standing up for our conservative views and beliefs. Thank you AMAC for taking the patriotic, conservative message of LIFE, LIBERTY, and Personal Pursuit (not government guarantee or mandated program!) of Happiness, and firm stance on the Constitution, Bill of Rights, and Founding Principals to the American people and to Washington and Congress on our behalf. AMAC seems to have more backbone than several of our main “conservative” leaders! Thanks AMAC, for sending representatives to speak with our Congressional officials and to conservative conventions. You are our feet in the halls of Congress and our voice in their offices when we can’t be there ourselves. God bless AMAC!

Larry says: Thank you AMAC for helping the majority of us older Americans be heard. The best thing we can do to help ourselves is to let as many people know about AMAC as we can. I sent AMAC info out to my contacts list and I received back several comments from people that were already members and many “thank you notes” from potential new members. We can all make our voices louder and much more powerful… please send the AMAC out to all!

AMAC Supports “No Social Security for Illegal Immigrants Act of 2013” 

Linda Schoonover says: Finally, someone is addressing this problem. I had given up hope that anyone was going to admit to this problem with social security. Illegals need to be taken off the rolls of free handouts and sent back to their country of origin. Become an American citizen the right way.

6 | www.amac.us

John L. Pickar says: It is about time, we as hard working American Citizens get the Benefits from our hard work, and we have all paid through Payroll Deductions for Retirement and Medicare. It is not right to distribute our Benefits to those that have not paid into the system.

Erin says: The illegal practices going on in this nation are an atrocity to the liberty of every citizen. Illegal residents should not be entitled to any benefits of any kind. Take away the illegal incentive. Ease the path to citizenship. I wholly support this proposed legislation as an added measure of protection for the contributions made into future benefits for our citizens.

Paul E says: Isn’t this the pinnacle of insanity that we have to have a law that does such an obvious thing as ensuring Social Security payments only go to legal United States citizens? It’s truly sad to see how far this nation has declined, if this is what we’re down to now. I’m sure we’ll hear from dozens of Democrats over the next few weeks about “how heartless this is to deny benefits to undocumented people in need” or “this is just further proof that the Republican party is out of touch with the American people” and the media will jump on the bandwagon to repeat this nonsense over and over again.

M. Prince says: It is CRAZY that Illegals have been milking our system for so many years and we are just now attempting to really stop the drainage. The Illegals should be returned to their country of origin (no amnesty) and apply as all the thousands of LEGAL immigrants have done over the years. BTW, I am half Hispanic and not afraid to call out the illegals.

Where is the ‘Affordable’ in the Affordable Care Act? 

Patricia Campbell says: It’s all about government control over one of the most critical areas of our lives. Socialized medicine has been a failure everywhere it’s been implemented. The U.S. has been the place where foreigners come to get and pay for the medical care they need, but are unable to get in their socialized countries. Where will they go now?

Roland Schroeder says: It’s not all about medical coverage. It’s about VOTES! The President & the Senate majority don’t care what Obamacare will cost the American taxpayer. It’s all about keeping the presidency and control in the Senate and making the American working class pay for the free or government subsidized medical care that 47,000,000 uninsured, mostly unemployed citizens and non-citizens will be receiving. The ‘handouts’ will continue and our socialistic ways will continue until there are no workers left to pay the bills.

Jeanne Schmidt says: We in New York have been seeing the increases for years. Every time the State adds a mandatory benefit, the premium increases. How could the legislators who voted for this bill not recognize that? You cannot add benefits and expect the premium to decrease!!! I don’t believe this law was meant to improve healthcare – I believe it is a big government move to take over control of the medical industry. It is NOT going to improve anything. It is going to make it harder to get treatment not easier. We already have seen companies pull back on their number of employees and move people from full time to part time to avoid the taxes involved in this legislation. What is coming next?

“My wife can get immediate help and I can worry less.” Ruth and I are still madly in love with each other, even after 49 years of marriage. She’s the most important person in my life. But I can barely keep up with her these days. She’s got her group of girlfriends, and they’re all very active, going to lunch, choir practice, aquarobics. Oh, and shopping! She’s always coming home with gifts for our grandkids. The problem is that I worry about Ruth when she’s out gallivanting around town. I suggested she get one of those medical alert help buttons, but she just plain refused. I wasn’t taking “no” for an answer, so I did some research on personal safety devices and came across 5Star Urgent ® ® ® Response by GreatCall. Unlike other devices, The 5Star has nationwide coverage, so it actually works at home and away from home. It was perfect for Ruth. Not only that, it’s the most affordable monthly fee I’ve seen – and believe me, I’ve looked. At only $1499 per month, we could save over $200 a year!

The friendly customer service representative I spoke with explained that The 5Star is not just for emergencies. He told me that in any uncertain or unsafe situation, all she’d have to do is press the button and she’d be immediately connected to a highly-trained 5Star Response Agent who would locate her using GPS technology. Agents could connect her to a nurse, dispatch 9-1-1 services and get her the help she needs. She still seemed hesitant. I asked her, what if she was walking back to her car and thought someone was following her? What if our granddaughter Jenny got stung by a bee and had a bad allergic reaction while they were out? Or what about the time she witnessed that car accident? I told her she should carry it “just in case” and that she’d be able to continue living her life independently. Finally, I told her that it would make me happy and that I’d worry a lot less. And that’s what convinced her.

Why 5Star is simply the best:

Technology: The Good, the Bad, and the Missed Moments

I

spent last Saturday night in a Manhattan cafe brainstorming ideas for an upcoming project. Across from me was a young couple - mid-twenties, I would guess - on a date. Except that they weren’t really talking to each other. Or really looking at each other. Instead, they were scrolling through their cell phones most of the time. Of course, they would look up from time to time to share a funny exchange or to talk about where they grew up or what friend was soon to be married, all the while intermittently typing on their touch screens. Moments of silence would be accompanied by scrolling through who-knows-what and answering who-knows-whom. The phones never left the table; their eyes occasionally left the phones. Just a few tables over, an elderly couple - early seventies, I would guess - was also on a date. I could tell that they didn’t know each other too well. There was something new and fresh about their exchanges. I could overhear bits and pieces of stories about their childhoods, about places they’d lived and people who had changed their

by Jedediah Bila

lives along the way. There were lots of silent pauses where they would take a minute to just look at each other. Those moments would be remembered, I’d imagine. I sat up in my chair and looked back and forth between the two couples. Then I looked down at my phone, resting on my table, capturing my attention. The older couple had it right. We, the younger generation, were doing something wrong. Sure, technology has made this world terribly efficient. Advances in science and medicine aside, imagine your life without your computer, cell phone, text messaging, email, DVR, and more. Things would be slower, less advanced, and decidedly more difficult to get done. However, Ralph Waldo Emerson reminds us that, “For everything you have missed, you have gained something else, and for everything you gain, you lose something else.” So, what have we lost? Those moments of silence on dates when we now glance at our phones were once moments of silence where we’d look into another’s eyes and learn something. Emails are quick. And easy. But opening up the mail and seeing an “I love you” in someone’s handwriting is a whole other world. It’s effort, for starters. And that means something. Relationship goodbyes through texts are conveniently detached. But having to say those goodbyes in person makes you face your mistakes, your flaws, and the hurt you’ve caused and received. Heck, sometimes those moments even change the course of history. Asking someone out via text message

or email protects you from the fear of rejection. But doing it in person takes guts, makes you stronger, and teaches you how to make a woman smile or a boy feel like a man. We may be building up technological advancement, but are we building character? Are we gaining or losing the ability to really connect? We may be saving time, but are we losing important moments? Technology saves lives. It promotes progress. And it’s the reason we’re able to successfully lead in a modern world. But I would argue that there’s a way to preserve a bit of what my grandparents’ generation did so well - those moments that last a lifetime, that change lives, that define who we are, and that teach us how to be the best people we can be. My grandma used to tell me that if she could have one day back with the love of her life, she wouldn’t waste a second. I fear that my generation would waste much more than that. I guess it’s up to us to make those changes. I, for one, am ready to start today.

Medicare and the Health Insurance Exchange Questions and Answers

T

here is much confusion regarding Medicare and the new health insurance exchange, a part of the Affordable Care Act (ACA) commonly referred to as Obamacare. This is understandable as there has been no clarification as to whether seniors are being affected by the health exchanges or not. The open enrollment periods (known as the Annual Enrollment Period for Medicare) overlap each other, and most systems have been crashing since the exchanges went live, so information has been limited. Below is a list of commonly asked questions regarding how Obamacare affects seniors, and whether or not seniors should consider switching to Obamacare.

Q: Does the health insurance exchange (aka. the Marketplace) sell Medigap or Advantage plans?

A: No. The Marketplace is not intended for most people with health insurance, including those with Medicare. The exchanges sell comprehensive medical insurance that helps cover both medical and drug costs. These plans are required to cover the ten essential health benefits required by the ACA. Medicare is not a part of the Marketplace.

to sell you a Health Insurance Marketplace plan. This is true even if you have only Part A or only Part B. The Center for Medicare and Medicaid (CMS) discourages Medicare beneficiaries from going to the Marketplaces to obtain coverage and requires agents and brokers to verify whether or not a person has Medicare prior to assisting them with Marketplace enrollment.

Q: Do Medicare beneficiaries have to do anything because of the ACA?

A: No. Medicare is not a part of the Health Insurance Marketplace. Beneficiaries with Medicare are considered covered. Your coverage under Medicare will not be affected. Q: Does Medicare coverage meet the minimum requirements set forth by the ACA that stipulates most adults must have health coverage in 2014?

A: Yes. Beneficiaries enrolled in Medicare Part A meet the requirement. Q: Can a person who is over the age of 65 that is not entitled to Medicare enroll into an exchange plan?

A: Yes. As long as their residency status is

Q: Can Medicare beneficiaries buy a plan on the exchange in addition to their Medicare?

in good standing, a person over the age of 65 without Medicare can enroll, and will be screened for subsidy eligibility.

A: No. It is against the law for someone who is aware that you have Medicare

Q: Can I choose Marketplace coverage instead of Medicare?

by Diana Wisniewski

A: Generally no. As mentioned above, it is illegal for someone who knows you

have Medicare to sell you a Marketplace plan. However, you can choose Marketplace coverage if you are eligible for Medicare but haven’t enrolled in it because you would have to pay a premium or because you are not collecting Social Security benefits. There are two important factors to consider before making this choice: 1) You may be subject to a late enrollment penalty if you decide to enroll in Medicare after your initial enrollment period ends. 2) If you decide to enroll in Medicare after your initial enrollment period, you can usually only enroll during the Medicare general enrollment period from January 1st through March 31st. Your Medicare coverage will not begin until July 1st.

It’s Time to Bury the Death Tax “In this world nothing can be said to be certain, except death and taxes,” Benjamin Franklin famously wrote in 1789. Fast-forward 224 years, and the same holds true for modern-day America – where a tax is even imposed on the property you leave to your heirs when you die.

E

stablished in 1916, the federal government created the estate tax, or “death tax,” as part of what has become a unified transfer tax system. This system, comprised of the estate tax, gift tax and generation-skipping tax, imposes a fee on wealth transfers that take place in the country. In the past, the federal government has relied on the estate tax, in part, as a permanent source of revenue. However, the economic and financial landscape of the country has changed greatly since Congress first instituted the death tax. Originally, this tax was intended to raise money for the federal government and prevent the concentra-

tion of wealth among a small number of elite American families. Today, the death tax no longer serves either of these purposes and poses no justifiable function, as it continues to inflict irreparable harm on families and small businesses. In fact, in 2008 the death tax only “raised about $24 billion – just 1 percent of total federal tax collections.”1 The amount of revenue raised has witnessed a rapid decline over the years, considering it accrued more than 5 percent of all federal revenue in 1940.2 Wealthy individuals are now making their fortunes by producing innovative new products in demand in the global marketplace. The inheritances that are passed on to the lucky few do not impede the financial and economic opportunities of others, who have an equal chance of moving up or down the income scale.3 While the death tax’s original objectives have been rendered virtually useless to the government today, many Americans feel that Congress should act immediately to repeal the death tax. Left untouched, the death tax will continue to

thwart economic growth, eliminate jobs and stifle wages. The economy, families and businesses should not be required to bear this unnecessary burden any longer, especially during a time of slow economic growth. In truth, it is the economy and the vanishing family businesses that ultimately buckle under the weight of the death tax and are forced to deal with its long-lasting consequences. According to Senior Tax Policy Analyst at the Heritage Foundation, Chris S. Dubay, the death tax is an egregious tax on capital and entrepreneurship.4 Capital, defined as any resource an individual or business uses to generate income, is essential to the growth and expansion of a business. Thus, “when the income accruing to capital is taxed, its price rises and less of it is

purchased” as productivity slows.5 Taxes of this nature, like the death tax, have detrimental repercussions and prevent employers from hiring new workers or raising wages. Dubay contends that the death tax ultimately “discourages savings and investments, undermines job creation and suppresses wages and productivity.”6 Again, Dubay argues that the federal death tax sends a signal that “it is better to consume today than invest and make more money in the future.”7 This message is highly disconcerting to intrepid entrepreneurs, whose successful economic endeavors act as the backbone of the U.S. economy. Naturally, the ripple effect set into motion by the death tax reaches to employers’ abilities to create jobs. According to Dubay’s analysis,

“resources that otherwise would have been available for businesses to use to expand their operations and add new workers are consumed by people who deem it wiser to spend the money now than invest it knowing their inheritors will have to pay the death tax later.”8 This alarming trend to consume today has even led some individuals to argue against the death tax, not from an economic vantage point, but out of a feeling of moral imperative. According to Edward J. McCaffery, a professor of law and economics at the University of Southern California, “the death tax rewards a ‘die-broke’ ethic, whereby the wealthy spend down their wealth on lavish consumption, and discourages economically and socially beneficial intergenerational saving.”9 To this end,

“the tax does not promote traditional liberal ideals of redistribution, equality of opportunity or fundamental fairness.”10 Instead of punishing bad behavior, the death tax conversely penalizes the good, responsible actions many Americans take when it comes to saving money. McCaffery puts it this way, “The death tax discourages the very behavior that a sound tax system ought to encourage: work, savings, thrift and intergenerational altruism.”11 All semblance of fairness is ultimately removed, therefore, because the tax burden falls on the wrong people – savers, not spenders.12 It seems illogical to continue to support a tax system that punishes people for saving their money and wanting to pass on a portion of their life-savings to their children. While this issue continues to rouse deep-seated feelings both personally and politically, the death tax still remains firmly in effect at the federal level and in some form or fashion in many states.

It’s Time to Bury the Death Tax

Where Not to Die States with estate or inheritance taxes and the highest rate

continued from pg. 15

Recognizing the perverse effects this tax has had on many Americans, lawmakers at the federal and state levels have wisely taken measures to repeal this cumbersome tax. Taking the lead, the state legislatures in North Carolina, Indiana, Ohio and Tennessee recently moved to eliminate or gradually phase-out their death taxes. The decision to remove the tax in these states has done more than simply offer relief and peace-of-mind to families and small businesses. For instance, states without a death tax are able to attract wealthy retirees and businesses to settle inside their borders, bolstering their state economies as a result. For the remaining high-rate states, their taxes will make it increasingly more difficult to entice their mobile high-income citizens to stay as they get older. Wealthy residents can easily avoid their states’ death taxes by fleeing to other states before they die, allowing them to continue building their wealth as they invest in business ventures and save money for their heirs. Operating under these conditions, the death tax inflicts considerably more harm than good. As the battle rages on in state capitals around the country, the war against the federal estate tax has made a resurgence. Just last January, Congress voted to permanently set the estate tax exemption at $5 million, with the maximum tax rate set at 40 percent. This means that estates exceeding the $5 million amount are subject to be taxed by the federal government, an exemption amount the president wants lowered and taxed more heavily. To combat the tax at the federal level, two Republican lawmakers have taken up the fight to see the death tax defeated once and for all. In June 2013, Senator John Thune (R-SD) and Congressman Kevin Brady (R-TX) introduced a bicameral bill, the “Death Tax Repeal Act of 2013.” If enacted, this bill would perma-

16 | www.amac.us

nently repeal the federal estate tax and the generation-skipping tax. To date, Rep. Brady’s H.R. 2429 has drawn the bipartisan support of 141 co-sponsors, while Sen. Thune’s S. 1183 has garnered the support of 32 Republican members in the Senate. Each bill now awaits consideration and action in their respective committees – the House Committee on Ways and Means and Senate Finance. Despite the strong opinions that anchor either side of this debate, finding common ground may still be possible. Though proponents of the death tax assert that repealing the tax would increase the deficit too much, this does not mean that assets transferred at death would be tax-free in the future. Instead, “the heirs of [an] estate would pay capital gains taxes on the assets they acquire when they choose to sell them,” says Dubay.13 In fact, this system of paying capital gains taxes on assets acquired during an estate transfer already exists in the form of an inheritance tax. Dubay explains that “the major difference between the death tax and the inheritance tax is that the heirs do not pay the tax at the time of the estate owner’s death; rather they pay when they sell what they inherited.” Thus, “no portion of the transferred asset escapes taxation, [but] the punitive effects the death tax has on capital are significantly lessened because resources do not have to be sold or liquidated to pay the capital gains tax.”14 The idea of instituting an inheritance tax system at the federal level, in place of the death tax, is a viable solution that responsibly addresses the concerns of all stakeholders in the debate. By creating a more efficient and fair tax system, America can enjoy a time of real prosperity again. The promise to boost the American economy, coupled with the hope of security being restored to family businesses, should prompt Congress to

Auto Insurance

Buying a New Car or Truck? Consider Auto Insurance Costs and Protect Your Loan When Trading Up

M

any drivers are looking at their old cars and trucks in the rearview mirror as they drive new vehicles off car dealership lots in record numbers. This past August, U.S. auto makers recorded their best sales month in nearly five years, and automotive experts think the trend will continue. New cars don’t leave the showroom unless the car dealer sees proof of insurance. If you have an existing auto insurance policy, it will provide temporary coverage; however, there is a time limit on this coverage and it’s identical to whatever coverage was on the old car. This is the case, whether the old car is traded in or retained. To maintain proper coverage when you are trading up, the

safest route is to update your auto insurance the day before you plan to take a new car home, according to the Insurance Information Institute (I.I.I.). While there is no requirement to tell your insurance company that you plan to buy a new car, there are four good reasons for doing so: 1 Your insurance representative can provide an estimate of how much auto insurance will cost on the new vehicle you are considering. This provides a valuable snapshot of the total cost of new car ownership. 2 Some auto insurers allow 30 days of automatic coverage to transfer from an old car to a new one; others offer less time. Don’t take the chance on missing the timeframe and risk being without proper protection. 3 If you are trading in a clunker that had only bare-bones protection and plan to finance a new car, the bank won’t approve the loan until you add Comprehensive and Collision Coverage to your policy. Collision covers damage that

results from a car crash; Comprehensive covers nearly everything else, such as damage from fire, flooding, theft and falling objects. 4 Cars depreciate fast—as in the moment they leave the dealership. Ask about gap insurance to cover your full loan amount because auto insurance is designed only to cover a car’s current value. Insurance companies all have different procedures for handling the replacement or addition of vehicles to an auto insurance policy, so the I.I.I. suggests you know the details in advance. “Talking with your insurance professional before your new car leaves the continued on pg. 19

showroom simply means you can drive it as a Day One worryfree,” said Lynne McChristian, an I.I.I. spokesperson. “The goal is to have customized overage to match the new car you plan to drive. You also want to ask your insurer about gap insurance because auto insurance pays the current cash value of a car if it is totaled, not the loan balance.”

Consider Gap Insurance, Especially If You Lease or Made a Modest Down Payment It’s a reality of new car ownership that cars lose value the minute they leave the dealer’s lot. One year after a new car purchase, a car’s value can depreciate by almost 20% according to Edmunds, a provider of auto data. Depreciation, in combination with making only a small down payment, means the owner of a new car has little equity in it and can end up “upside down,” meaning with a loan amount higher than what the nearly new car is worth. The difference can be thousands of dollars. “While the car may still be new to you, it is a used car to everyone else,” said McChristian. “Gap insurance fills the gap between what the car is worth and what you owe on it.” Much of the increase in new car sales is driven by those who are leasing high-end cars and trucks. If you lease, you may have even less equity in the vehicle and gap insurance provides much-needed protection. Many auto dealerships sell gap insurance, but it’s less costly to buy it directly from your own insurer, noted McChristian. “Typically, this additional protection costs about $20-$30 more a year, a small price to pay to keep more in your own pocket, if you have a new car totaled in a car crash,” she added. od bless you! And you, and you, and you… AMAC has reached a significant milestone in our young history. As of this writing, there are now 1,000,000 Americans who identify themselves as members of the Association of Mature American Citizens. What was once an idea born out of necessity has grown into the fastest growing alternative organization for mature Americans in the United States. And what a ride it’s been. From humble beginnings, including literally going door to door to recruit new members, AMAC has evolved into a substantial voice that fills a void for older Americans who subscribe to Conservative values. How big is our voice? Big enough to earn the attention of numerous Congressional and Senatorial offices that seek OUR support of specific legislation. Big enough to secure significant discounts from major insurance carriers, and also to command their creation of custom-built products exclusively for AMAC members. AMAC’s roster of benefits continues to grow as our member-

ship expands and new benefits are frequently rolled out. The AMAC community on Facebook has exploded from 20,000 fans in February to over 200,000 today with its growth tied directly to the membership development. We welcome and encourage the exchange of ideas that you bring to us through this medium. The growth in membership has been exhilarating, pushing our capacities to the limit and challenging us to refine them every step of the way. It’s a challenge we embrace and are proud to accept. AMAC now has operations in four states and over 50 jobs have been created as a result of our growth. At the heart of all of this expansion is AMAC’s member base. We take the trust you’ve placed in us very seriously. We are honored that you’ve chosen our orga-

We understand what it took to motivate you to join AMAC and we pledge to continue to work as hard as we can to ensure that the issues that matter to you are brought to legislators in Washington, DC. We understand that you seek solutions, not patronizing lip service emanating from an agenda that does not reflect your values and beliefs. You can be assured that we will continue to seek your input as we work to craft solutions to the issues that concern you. Thanks to your commitment to AMAC, mature Conservative Americans now have a mouthpiece in Washington, and more importantly, a seat at the table in the national debate on issues that matter most to you.

Herman Cain

H

erman Cain is a man with an impressive list of accomplishments. From successfully running businesses, serving as Chairman of Federal Reserve Banks, and surviving cancer, to running for President of the United States of America, few have experienced so much in life. At one point, Herman Cain took the lead in the polls – including over Barack Obama – in the race for the White House. A vicious smear campaign, kindled and fueled by a liberal media and perpetuated by opponents even in his own party, derailed that effort, but since then, Mr. Cain has been far from quiet. In fact, since taking over for the legendary Neal Boortz’s nationally syndicated radio talk show in January, 2013, he may actually be talking more now than he ever has. Herman Cain uses his gifts and talents to educate the public through his radio program and he reaches out to America’s youth by speaking regularly on college campuses. But more than talk, he has always been involved. Herman Cain directly and publicly challenged President Clinton’s 1993 healthcare plan. He was the senior economic advisor to Bob Dole’s presidential campaign, and he later developed his “9-9-9 Plan” as an option to replace the tax code now being used. AMAC recently had the opportunity to spend some time talking with Herman Cain over the telephone, and we took advantage of the occasion to ask him questions submitted by fans and members of AMAC.

by David Weber 22 | www.amac.us

DAVID WEBER: A lot of our members have asked us to talk to you. We’re so appreciative of your time. HERMAN CAIN: Really? All right! DW: As you know, AMAC is a member-driven organization, so rather than come up with my own questions I thought it would be more appropriate to ask our members to submit questions that I could present to you. We literally got hundreds of responses and selected a few to present to you. Our first question was submitted by Pal Deerskin of Las Cruces, New Mexico. Pal asks, “What can we do, as a private citizen, to influence our existing government to give up its lock on political power and to restore constitutional freedom to legal American citizens?” HC: Three things. Stay informed. Know what’s going on, such that they know at least enough about the major issues to be able to vote intelligently when they get an opportunity to vote. And know that their vote counts. Secondly, stay involved. Everybody can do something, whether that’s working with a candidate that’s running for Congress or Senate, or whether that’s working with even a locallevel candidate. You have to stay involved as to what’s going on in Washington, D.C. And that also entails sending emails, making phone calls. Staying involved and providing feedback to our elected representatives to let them know that we are paying attention. That’s what every individual citizen can do. And the third thing: stay inspired. The worst thing that people can do is to give up and not think that we can change things. It may look like we may not be able to change things and that’s exactly what the Liberals want us to think. But we can change things. So, in a nutshell, they need to stay informed, stay involved, and stay inspired. DW: Valerie Emmett George would like to know, “What can we do to clean up

the mess this administration is doing to our country?” HC: The first thing is we’ve got to get behind candidates for 2014 in order to maintain control over the House and get control of the United States Senate. I know that a lot of people want to focus on who’s going to be the Republican candidate 2016. It’s way too early to worry about that. Right now our focus should be 2014, maintain control of the House, getting control of the Senate. We will not be able to stop President Obama on all of his socialist plans, but if we get control of both houses of Congress, we would be able to slow them down. DW: Kelly Jenkins Ortiz from Temecula, California, asks, “I’m very interested in your ‘lose the labels and let’s just find a solution’ attitude. What continues to be your greatest challenge in promoting solution-finding rather than the constant bickering we seem to hear perpetuated in the media?” HC: The greatest challenge is the media [laughter] because they parrot the administration and the Liberals. And so, that being said, we must maximize alternative media such as this [AMAC Advantage] publication. Hopefully all of your members would, and all of the people who read your publication. This is a good source of getting the message out about what we can do – like questions one and two. But we have to make sure that we counter some of the mainstream media

Interview

with the alternative media outlets that we have. Your publication, my website, other websites that people trust. This is what we have to do in order to counter that. So the biggest thing, the biggest challenge, is the mainstream media trying to prevent us from promoting solution-finding ideas. DW: Dave and Peggy Okerblom from Holbrook, New York, ask, “Do you think Americans still have the same opportunities that you had in the past to build and develop companies? If not, what can we do to change this?” HC: The answer is yes. I believe that Americans still have the same opportunities, but there are more barriers. And the more barriers – The barriers come from, primarily, government – government regulations, the inequities in the tax code. That’s where the barriers are. What we can do to remove these barriers is to change control of Congress like I talked about earlier. Once we change control of Congress, not only do we need to stop passing so many regulations that are going to hurt business, we need to undo some of them. If you’re not going to undo any of them until you get the right control of Congress, and hopefully, ultimately, get control of the White House. DW: What level of government control or oversight do you think is the right mix to allow our economy to grow, and yet fulfill its role? HC: I think that the current level

within the United States Congress is the right level of control and oversight. We’ve just got to make sure that they do their jobs. A good example is Darrell Issa, the oversight committee that he heads up. They are doing a great job, I believe, in pressing to get to the bottom of some of the questions relative to the issues that they are on top of. I know that there are a couple of committees involved. But what happens is, if the people don’t stay on top of what oversight they ought to be providing, it can get away from them. The situation I can think of is the committees in the House and the Senate when Barney Frank and Chris Dodd were heading up the oversight committees, respectively, of Fannie Mae and Freddie Mac. Well, they didn’t do a good job of oversight because it was the fox-in-the-hen-house kind of relationship and that’s why Fannie Mae and Freddie Mac got so screwed up. DW: “What is the difference between running a business and running for president?” asks Tony Dolan in Washington, D.C. HC: When you’re running a business, you are in control of most of the things that can impact the success and failure of that business. When you’re running for president, there are a lot of things you can’t control. And the biggest thing that you can’t control is how the media will treat your message as a candidate. You can control the things within your campaign, but the impact of media you can’t control. The impact coming from competitors or other candidates, you can’t control that. So you have more uncontrollable things to deal with running for president than you do when you’re running a business. DW: Many of our members have asked for your thoughts on exploring fair tax and flat tax. HC: I’m glad they asked. If they go to my website, which I encourage them to do, they’ll find something that I call “PickA-Tax-Plan” USA. It is where I ask people to vote for the flat tax, the fair tax, or 9-9-9. The reason that I’m doing this is because all three of those are great options for replacing the current tax code. What I want to do is to determine the favorite for voters and then we all get behind the one plan. I like – I can live with the fair tax or the flat tax. It’s not a competition between the fair tax and the flat tax. The challenge is getting the elected members of Congress to take seriously the need to replace

the tax code. So once we determine the solution that’s most preferred, we will demand it and promote it and support it and push it until we get a change. DW: “And would your 9-9-9 plan restore America to economic solvency?” asks Charlie Nichols from West Virginia. HC: Not by itself. In order to restore America to economic solvency, you can do it with either one of those plans. You can do it with 9-9-9. You can do it with the fair tax and you can do it with the flat tax. And the way you can do it with either one is, you’ve got to put some caps and controls on spending. It’s not that we would-Those three plans-- Either of those plans would super-charge the economy. But if you don’t super-charge the economy at the same time that you suppress growth and spending, you’re never going to solve that problem. DW: Stephen Wayne Modawell would like you to please explain to us little guys, “How in the world do we climb out of this seventeen-plus trillion-dollar debt?” HC: We do it the same way we would do it if we were in a deep debt hole with our own personal finances. We’ve got to get tax revenues rolling faster than spending. Right now, we have spending rolling faster than revenues and in order to get revenues growing faster, tax revenues growing faster, it gets back to you must replace the tax code. And it must be replaced with one of those options that I present relative to the Pick-A-TaxPlan. Not one that the politicians come up with, because they will tell you that they want to reform the tax code, but that never goes anywhere. We have got to be more specific and say we are going to demand a specific solution. Secondly, you’ve got to figure out a way to put some control on spending. There have been a lot of ideas that have been introduced in Congress in order to be able to do that, but they just have not followed through with it. For example, there was legislation considered at one point by Republicans, by the way, that said that any new regulations that had an impact of over a hundred million dollars would require an act of Congress in order for it to be approved and implemented. That’s one way that you put some controls on spending. And there have been some other deals. But it starts with revenues coming in faster than

Interview

Herman Cain spending and then secondly, figuring out legislatively, how you control spending. DW: Switching gears a little bit, Al Risinger submits, “This president has caused more racial division in this country than I thought possible. How do we resolve the growing problem? How do we get back to one nation under God?” HC: The way we get back to one nation under God is that we have a president who believes in one nation under God. You’re not going to get it from this current president. Secondly, those of us who believe in one nation under God must never abandon that principle. We must never abandon it or give up on it. And so, we need to work towards having a president who believes in that concept next time we get an opportunity to elect the president of the United States. DW: Dave Hawes asks, “How can the black American community be won away from the deceptive, seductive promises of the Democrat Party?” HC: Information, information, information. And that’s a constant battle. You have to do it in whichever ways and whichever outlets you possibly can. But what I’m finding is that when you get an opportunity to present the right information to black Americans, some of them will wake up and see that they are being deceived. So, it’s not a fast process, but it’s all about how do you better educate people on what the issues are. [It] gets back to something that I said earlier in the interview. Stay informed. Too many black Americans are not informed. The Democrats work very hard at keeping them uninformed. And then staying involved and staying inspired. So it gets back to inform, inform, inform, educate, educate, educate. Get as much information out there as you can in as many opportunities as you can in order to help educate people. DW: And the same, I guess, could be said for reaching young people. HC: Absolutely. I speak at a lot of colleges and universities. I would estimate that over the past year alone, I have spoken at probably two dozen colleges and universities. And what I’m finding is, a lot of young people on these university and college campuses, they’re not stupid.

24 | www.amac.us

They get it when they get the information, when they get the right information. Fortunately, I have been invited to go to a lot of colleges and universities where I deliver a message of free enterprise and I deliver a message about the value of our free market-driven system. And it works. And they understand it. But we have to take the message to them, which is why I do as many of these as I do on an annual basis. DW: Jody Durant would like to know, “Why do you think the GOP is having such a hard time getting their leadership elected? Why can’t we pull the black and Hispanic votes?” HC: The biggest reason is the GOP brand, the Republican brand, is tarnished. And there are ways to fix that, but the GOP – with the leadership of the Republican National Committee – they have not done a good job of sharpening the image of the GOP brand. Because if the umbrella brand is tarnished, all candidates that are running under that umbrella brand are also going to be tarnished, and it makes it difficult for them to be successful. You don’t need to do anything different to attract blacks and Hispanics than you would do to attract independent, white, or any other group. We just need to do a better job of communicating what our brand stands for. And that’s where I think we lack the proper leadership by the Republican National Committee in order to be able to do that. I happen to know that a solution to that has been developed by someone that’s been presented to the RNC, but they haven’t totally embraced it yet and it’s really, really simple, but we’ve got to repair the Republican brand before we’re able to attract these other groups. Pandering does not work for us. DW: Carol Wiseman asks, “With all the differences, where do you see the Republican Party going, especially for the

photo: Brian Stansberry

2014 and 2016 elections?” HC: With all of the differences, the success of the Republican Party in 2014 and ‘16 is going to have to come from the bottom-up. It’s going to have to come from the people. It’s going to have to come from the Republicans and Conservatives that are going to demand that the Republican members in Congress work together. It’s going to have to come from almost a grass roots of getting behind good candidates and helping them win and getting rid of a lot of the Republican candidates that are already there, who basically are living off of seniority. I think it’s destroying the Republican Party and we’re seeing that with the whole budget debate going on in Washington, D.C., right now. And so, the way we close the gap on these differences is from the bottom up, the voters, the people who can demand that they do a better job of doing what the people want and not what the political party wants. DW: Okay, last question. And this is a question that hundreds of AMAC members have asked. “Will Herman Cain run again in 2016?” HC: The answer is, “Pray for me.” DW: Good answer. HC: [laughter] That’s all I’m going to say. Pray for me. I believe in prayer. There’s no clear answer to that at this particular point. “Pray for me” is the answer.

Fighting the Culture War Whose Side are You On?

H

ave you noticed that it’s difficult to go to a movie without hearing offensive language or that it’s tough to watch pop-music award shows without witnessing raunchy dancing? Cursing, vulgar behavior and a lack of virtues are sadly on the rise, plaguing television screens and creeping into our daily lives. Movements to omit the words “under God” from The Pledge of Allegiance and to restrict school prayer demonstrate that our nation is inching toward faithlessness. Ironically, our “under God” nation must not mention God. The battle cry is sounded in the call to uphold sacred values and preserve human dignity. One dramatic way to answer that call is to back companies and organizations which support conservative causes. Likewise, avoiding relationships with unprincipled companies may help send a message that we will not accept demoralization of values. Let’s shake things up by making thoughtful consumer choices.

Chick-fil-A:

This American chain food restaurant, which specializes in chicken sandwiches, has over 1,700 restaurants in 38 U.S. states and the District of Columbia. Last year, a huge political debate was sparked by Chick-fil-A over same-sex marriage

in support of marriage between a man and a woman. LGBT rights activists began a fire-storm after hearing Chickfil-A’s president, Dan Cathy, tell a Baptist newspaper that he supported the “Biblical” definition of family. Unwilling to accept Cathy’s religious

view-points, LGBT responded in anger by calling for protests and boycotts of the fast food chain. Counter-protesters responded by frequenting the restaurant to back the company. Former Gov. Mike Huckabee of Arkansas expressed support of the company’s principles by encouraging conservatives to visit the restaurant. The reverse-boycott resulted in lines which went out the doors and led to record sales at some chains. To quell negative media backlash over the controversy, Chickfil-A issued a Who We Are statement to clarify beliefs and shed light on priorities in relation to corporate giving. A portion reads, “A part of our corporate commitment is to be responsible stewards of all that God has entrusted to us. Because of this commitment, Chick-

fil-A’s giving heritage is focused on programs that educate youth, strengthen families and enrich marriages, and support communities through its WinShape Foundation.” Might public pressure be prompting Chick-fil-A to down-play its religious values to avoid further political controversy?

2

Hobby Lobby:

The Christian-owned retail chain has over 550 stores in 45 states and is one of America’s fastest growing arts and crafts chains. Recently, the company sued to block Obamacare’s birth control

mandate, contending that the regulation violates its religious objections to birth control and abortion. The case is moving on to the Supreme Court. Though a revised version of the birth control mandate exempts religious entities, forprofit companies like Hobby Lobby are not exempted. Backed by high-profile GOP lawmakers, including Senate Minority Leader Mitch McConnell (KY) and Senator Orrin Hatch (UT), the retail chain pledged to resist the birth control mandate against the threat of hefty federal fines. The federal court is currently allowing the craftstore chain to continue with its case, temporarily without penalty, stating that the lower Oklahoma court erred by failing to grant Hobby Lobby an injunction. CEO

and Founder. David Green believes that faith-based companies, non-profit and for-profit, should have the freedom to follow their beliefs. His company is proudly committed to “Honoring the Lord in all we do by operating the company in a manner consistent with biblical principles.“ Hobby Lobby supports organizations chosen by the Green Family, including NEEDHIM, Every Home for Christ, One Hope and Wycliffe. In recent news, because they are currently facing pressure from the Jewish population, Hobby Lobby announced its intention to carry Hanukkah items in some of its stores.

3

The Salvation Army:

This faith-based organization boasts worldwide membership of over 1.5 million, including soldiers, officers and ‘Salvationists’. With a presence in over 125 countries, the founders, Catherine and William Booth, sought to bring salvation to the poor, destitute and hungry. Introduced in London in 1865, its mission is “to feed, to clothe, to comfort, and to care.” The organization aims to rebuild broken homes and broken lives, distribute food, aid in disaster relief, offer rehabilitation and

We preach the Gospel of Jesus Christ and meet human needs in His name without discrimination.” The beliefs of the Salvation Army rest upon eleven doctrines, with their flag designed as a symbol of the Army’s war against sin and social evils. Last year, the Australian Salvation Army was ballyhooed as ‘antigay’ after comments were made on a radio show by a media relations director and thrust them into a public-relations storm. Quick apologies were made for the official’s comments. The Army’s doctrine follows mainstream Christian beliefs and emphasizes its charitable objective to benefit society, communities and mankind. The organization opposes euthanasia and assisted suicide, accepts abortion only in extreme cases and is divided on capital punishment. Views on homosexuality are “under review,” while currently favoring views consistent with the church’s philosophy. The organization has a long history of service. During WWI, The Doughnut Girls served refreshments to troops in trenches and provided first aid stations, Christian worship, social clubs and kind deeds to frontline services. Today, you may associate the Salvation Army with its bright red kettles and bell ringers during the holiday season.

4

American Girl:

In 1986, this American line of dolls was released by Pleasant Company of Wisconsin, which later became a subsidiary of Mattel. The dolls are based on American history stories and

focus on young girls, age 9 to 11, who lived in various time periods. They are sold with books and share historical topics such as child labor, poverty and slavery. American Girl Place, with its flagship and first store in Chicago, is a retail chain featuring shopping, dining, a photo studio, a doll hair salon and special events. The company launched an online virtual world via a Campus Guide simultaneously with Shine on Now, a charitable effort to encourage girls to give back to their communities. American Girl donates money to the non-profit homeless housing group HomeAid through Project Playhouse. The company has been under scrutiny for introducing controversial storylines and characters, namely ones including a black slave, a Latina from a ‘dangerous neighborhood’ and a homeless girl. In 2005, pro-life groups criticized the company for its venture with Girls, Inc., an organization which supported underprivileged girls while promoting abortion rights and acceptance of homosexuality. “American Girl’s mission is to celebrate girls. We embrace who they are today and look forward to who they will become.”

Marriott Hotel:

This full-service chain operates as Marriott International’s flagship brand, with hotels and resorts all over the world. The hospitality company often makes Forbes list as one of the best companies in which to work. They share “We believe our strength is rooted in our core values: putting people first, pursuing excellence, embracing change, acting with integrity and serving the world. These values are our legacy and our future.” The company was founded in 1927 by Mormon missionaries, J. Willard Marriott and his wife Alice Sheets Marriott, who began a root beer stand in Washington, D.C. and later expanded the business into a chain of restaurants and hotels. Their first hotel opened in Arlington Virginia in 1957. Marriott International contributed to the second inauguration of President George W. Bush. Adopting a Formal Diversity Program as of 2008, Bill Marriott responded to California’s proposition 8. “As many of you know I’m a member of The Church of Jesus Christ of Latterday Saints. Some might conclude given my family’s membership in the Mormon Church that our company supported the recent ballot initiative to ban same sex marriage in California. This is simply untrue.” In 2012, Arne Sorenson assumed the title of President and CEO. Charity affiliations include Habitat for Humanity, Feeding American, The Red Cross & Red Crescent Societies and the continued on pg. 30

Target:

The Target Corporation is the secondlargest discount retailer behind WalMart. Dayton Dry Goods opened in Minnesota in 1902, founded by banker George Draper Dayton. Upon a fire in his Presbyterian Church, Dayton helped by purchasing a nearby lot to construct a building to gain tenants. Later, he bought out a tenant’s interest and became owner of a retail store which he ran on strict Presbyterian guidelines. By 1920, it became a multi-million dollar family-run business. Dayton Dry Goods became Dayton Hudson until the first Target store opened in Minnesota in 1962. “To support our mission, we are guided by our commitments to great value, the community, diversity and the environment.” Target is known for its philanthropy, giving over $3 million a week to communities it serves and donating a percentage of its charge from Target Visa toward schools. The company supports Target House, providing longterm housing families with ill children at St. Jude’s Research Hospital. The company donates to local Salvation Army chapters through its grant program and to United Way of America. They partnered with magician David Blaine to fund families on shopping sprees and continually donate to disaster relief and to the American Red Cross. Target is often criticized for lack of labor unions,

30 | www.amac.us

for failure to have a living wage policy, and for urban development. In 2005, Planned Parenthood protested to oppose Target’s conscience clause allowing pharmacists to refuse to dispense emergency contraception, Plan B, based on religious beliefs. In 2010, Lady Gaga revoked release of her second album to protest Target’s donation to Minnesota Forward, a largely Republican action committee funded by corporations. Unlike Walmart, Target does not sell firearms or tobacco.

7

Wal-Mart:

Wal-Mart Stores Inc. is the leading retailer of this multinational retail chain of discount department stores and warehouses. It is one of the world’s largest public corporations, with over two million employees and 8,500 stores in 15 countries. Founded in 1962 by Sam Walton, a faithful man who taught Sunday school at a local Presbyterian Church and was actively involved in the Rotary Club, the Chamber of Commerce, and Little League. In five years, Wal-Mart grew by leaps and bounds as it expanded to 24 stores. The company’s intention was to offer products to consumers at low prices to gain high volume sales at a low profit margin. It began outselling competitors like Kmart and Sears and sales soared in the Bible belt, selling photo: Okelani Ohan

continued from pg. 28

firearms and tobacco at some of its locations. Criticized for impacting the mom & pop market in small towns, Wal-Mart is working hard to be “good stewards” of the environment. The company is governed by a fifteen member Board of Directors and Hillary Clinton served from 1985 to 1992. In 2009, Wal-Mart paid bonuses to every full and part-time hourly worker of the company. Labor unions and democrats like Rep. Alan Grayson (D-FL) have been outspoken about employees’ wages, blaming Wal-Mart’s non-union status for an increase in governmental dependency. Others point out that WalMart offers a substantial number of associates and their dependents health insurance through public insurance programs. Many believe Wal-Mart is simply targeted by pro-union groups due to its large size. Wal-Mart faced a class action gender discrimination lawsuit in which female employees accused them of discrimination in the workplace with regard to promotions, pay and job assignments relating to 235 stores. The Supreme Court ruled that the accounts do not demonstrate that the company operates under the general policy of discrimination. Gaining praise for expanding their antidiscrimination policy, Wal-Mart redefined “family” to include same-sex partners. WalMart harkens back to company roots. “Saving people money to help them live better was the goal that Sam Walton envisioned when he opened the doors to the first Wal-Mart in 1962. And it remains our focus today…” Wal-Mart and its Foundation give back to the community, donating more than $1 billion in cash and in-kind donations to local food banks and to aid in disasters. continued on pg. 32

Ben & Jerry’s Ice Cream:

Ben & Jerry’s produces and sells ice cream products under a division of multinational consumer goods company, Unilever. The brand was created by childhood friends, Ben Cohen and Jerry Greenfield. After taking a correspondence course on ice cream, they opened an ice cream parlor in a

renovated gas station in Burlington, Vermont. Later, they rented space in a former spool and bobbin mill and began to package the ice cream into pints. In 2000, Unilever bought Ben & Jerry’s for $326 million, handling current dayto-day management operations. The company currently annually makes an estimated $300 million and has a three part mission: product, economic and social. All three parts must thrive equally, according to their beliefs, in a way which commands respect for individuals, the company and the community. Both men attribute their Jewish heritage for creating a desire to treat people fairly. Controversy stirred amidst rumors suggesting they supported Mumia AbuJamal, convicted in 1982 of killing a Philadelphia police officer. In 1988, they won title of U.S. Small Business Persons of the Year, awarded by U.S. President Ronald Reagan. Politically active Ben & Jerry’s created a campaign sending 70,000 postcards to Congress regarding kids and national issues and put a 900 lb. Baked Alaska in front of the U.S. Capitol to protest oil-drilling in the Arctic. Ben Cohen began a “Stamp Money Out

continued from pg. 30

of Politics Campaign” to amend the Constitution to set limits on spending by corporations and individuals for political purposes. Ben & Jerry support Occupy Wallstreet, calling the inequity of classes “simply immoral.” In partnership with Freedom to Marry, they renamed ice creams to celebrate legalization of same-sex marriages. Ben and Jerry’s give away one million free cones each year, with charitable organizations or voter registrations promoted. 2011 brought more controversy with the release of a flavor called “Schweddy Balls” after an impolite skit on Saturday Night Live. The American Family Association and One Million Moms called it vulgar. AMAC has a Social Security Guarantee As a truly membership-driven organization, AMAC makes it clear that advocacy for its constituents—now numbering over one million—is the heart and soul of its Capitol Hill efforts.

N

owhere is this more evident than AMAC’s determination to play a leadership role in solving the problems plaguing America’s Social Security System today. The problems are clear. The Social Security Trust Fund—the source of payments to more than 58 million people—is projected to be depleted by 2033, resulting in a substantial reduction in benefits for those who need it most. The causes are equally clear—life expectancies have increased significantly (20 years), while the number of workers supporting each beneficiary has dropped dramatically, from a ratio of 16-to-1 when Social Security was launched to less than 3-to-1 today. AMAC has been following the development of this predicament for some time, and has been squarely in the forefront of a campaign for legislative attention. For example, AMAC’s Social Security Report website (www.socialsecurityreport.org) has provided ongoing updates and analyses of the most recent Social Security Trustees Report, along with daily news reports about the state of America’s Social Security program. Even more to the point, AMAC has taken the lead in crafting a working document for legislators that provides an overall framework for attacking the situation. AMAC’s solution is straightforward and uncomplicated. It has been presented as a starting point for discussions that would lead to a final bill that we believe the majority of lawmakers could find agreeable and

by Gerry Hafer 34 | www.amac.us

workable. The details have been actuarially verified, and have been reviewed and endorsed in a number of quarters, including the National Center for Policy Analysis (NCPA).

Prime Directives for AMAC’s Solution AMAC’s proposed legislative framework is structured with two prime directives: • To increase the level of payments to lower-income recipients • To provide a mechanism for all earners to have additional savings available when they elect to retire With these two fundamentals serving as guidance, AMAC has developed an approach that retains Social Security’s basic benefits structure and contribution strategies, but proposes amendments to the computation of Primary Insurance Amounts—the amount beneficiaries would receive from the Social Security Trust Fund. Through these uncomplicated changes, Social Security’s solvency for the next 80 years and beyond can be achieved.

Here’s what AMAC proposes: 1. Adopt a tiered approach to the calculation of Cost of Living Adjustments for Social Security recipients. The tiers would be tied to income levels, with beneficiaries having adjusted gross incomes (AGI) of $20,000 or less being guaranteed an annual increase of at least 3% but not more than 4%. For beneficiaries with an AGI between $20,001 and $50,000, the annual COLA would be a guaranteed minimum of 1.5%, and capped at 3%. For beneficiaries with AGIs exceeding $50,001,

the guaranteed range would be 1% to 2%. Under this plan, the COLA would be legislatively guaranteed for all beneficiaries, thereby providing at least some level of adjustment for all retirees each year. The days of zero COLA adjustments (as in 2009 and 2010) would be eliminated. In the event that the Consumer Price Index is greater than the maximum COLA, the House of Representatives would have the power to increase the COLA for one year by passing the resolution with a 2/3 majority vote.

2. Implement a setback in the Early and Normal Retirement Ages for New Retirees. AMAC’s plan would change the early retirement age (ERA) from 62 to 64 over a seven-year period, starting in 2015 and phasing in at three-month intervals. Also starting in 2015, the normal retirement age (NRA) would change from 66 to 69 over a twelve-year period, also phasing in at three-month intervals. There are a number of proposed retirement age changes under consideration in Washington today. AMAC has examined many of them, and has selected this recommended setback schedule as the most feasible. It closely follows a proposal advocated by Sen. Kay Bailey Hutchison, with the exception of AMAC recommending the phasing-in to begin a year earlier.

3. Adjust the Primary Insurance Amount to keep lower-income earner benefits stable. AMAC carefully evaluated the options

Social Security

presented in the 2012 Social Security Trustees Report, and selected the approach that keeps benefit levels for lower-income earners intact, while lowering future benefits for higher-income earners. Essentially, this relatively slight adjustment in the average indexed monthly earnings calls for retention of benefits levels for earners below the 50th percentile in the calculation formula beginning in 2019, and is consistent with AMAC’s prime directive of preserving benefits for lower-income earners. (For details on the mechanics of this adjustment, see item B1.4 in the 2012 Social Security Trustees Report.)

efit Research Institute said they are concerned about their inability to save), and it becomes crystal clear that something needs to be done for the future. Enter the Early Retirement Account advocated by AMAC in its legislative proposal. The ERA component is similar to the traditional IRA provided via the Internal Revenue Service, but with a few fundamental adjustments. For example, employers would be required to offer an ERA to all employees (full- and part-time) via payroll deduction, with a pre-tax weekly deduction between $5 and $100. Employers would be allowed to contribute to employee’s ERA, up to $50 per week. Contribution levels would be indexed for inflation to ensure that the savings keep place with the economy. Earnings would of course be tax-deferred, and investments would be regulated by an appointed board of investment experts. Perhaps the most significant aspect of the AMAC-proposed ERA is the complete absence of borrowing provisions. The total objective of the ERA is to create a supplemental source of funds for a time when they are most needed. By preserving continuity of contributions, it is possible that with moderate investment and employer contribution assumptions and historical market returns, a 25 year-old worker contributing only $15 per week could accumulate over $175,000 by the time the early retirement age is reached (age 64). With a $45 per week contribution, this accumulated balance would grow to nearly $375,000.

4. Provide an Early Retirement Account

What’s Been Done So Far?

(ERA) Option for All Workers. Remember the fabled “three-legged stool” approach to funding your retirement years? Personal savings is one of these legs, along with Social Security and employersponsored defined benefit pension plans. But pension plans are disappearing from the economic landscape, making it more and more critical that today’s workers expand their savings efforts to take up the slack. Consider that the average Social Security beneficiary today collects between $13,000 and $14,000 annually. For many of today’s retirees, this is the largest portion of their retirement income. Couple this statistic with the continual declining optimism workers report about their ability to save for retirement (roughly half of the workers surveyed recently by the Employee Ben-

AMAC has reviewed its proposal with a number of key legislative sources in Washington, and has been publicizing it through the AMAC.US and SocialSecurityReport. Org websites. A summary booklet explaining the proposal has been distributed and discussed at political forums in Washington, like the September AMAC Congressional Award Reception and the October Values Voter Summit. In addition, copies of the text of the proposal have been delivered to all Congressional Representatives, and it’s been quickly gathering bi-partisan support. The proposal and the spirit behind it have been carried to a wide array of outlets through the efforts of AMAC’s Ambassadors and Delegates, where grassroots-level momentum is building. In all cases, the message about AMAC’s

proposed Social Security solution is characterized as a win-win for all. AMAC makes it clear that the Social Security issue is not a partisan issue, nor is it a Conservative or a Liberal issue. The bottom line is that a solution for all Americans is the best way to proceed, and AMAC is confident that the framework for this proposal will preserve Social Security for future generations.

What’s the Next Step? Anyone interested in Social Security— and that’s virtually all Americans—can lend a hand to the solution by following a simple three-step action plan: 1. Review the details of the AMAC proposal and send your comments to AMAC either via email (info@amac.us) or via surface mail to: 5 Orville Drive, Suite 400 Bohemia, NY 11716 2. Contact your Congressional Representatives at their local offices and at their Washington offices and tell them to save Social Security now by supporting the AMAC proposal. 3. Join the AMAC Army! There’s strength in numbers and our numbers are growing every day. Add your voice to the growing number of patriots actively helping AMAC reach for a new day for this great country of ours! AMAC Honors Distinguished Legislators Capitol Hill event recognizes lawmakers for their support of Mature Americans

O

n September 10th, AMAC hosted its inaugural Congressional reception, held in conjunction with National Grandparents Day. This primetime reception commemorated grandparents and older Americans, who have contributed to society in meaningful ways and who have made a difference in the lives of younger Americans nationwide. In accordance with this important holiday, AMAC paid tribute to select lawmakers who have gone to great lengths and have assumed significant responsibility to advance the issues and interests of importance to mature Americans. To honor the AMAC Award recipients, Rep. Sam Johnson (R-TX), Sen. Orrin Hatch (R-UT), and Dennis Hastert, former Speaker of the House of Representatives and friend to AMAC, joined AMAC President Dan Weber to present the awards. During his tenure as the longestserving Republican Speaker in history, Hastert led an effort to reform health

care and boldly fought for the reform of entitlement programs. The Speaker’s distinguished career and close friendships with the AMAC honorees drew a number of elected leaders and government staffers to the reception, adding to the celebratory aura that permeated the room. Speaking to a packed hearing room in the Rayburn House Office Building, Speaker Hastert and Weber highlighted the myriad legislative initiatives that have been undertaken by Rep. Johnson and Sen. Hatch to present common sense, conservative solutions to the problems with which Americans young and old grapple. As key figures on the House and Senate committees that directly influence and impact seniors, both of these legendary politicians have been two of the leading forces behind the positive ideas and reforms discussed in the 113th Congress. In particular, Rep. Johnson has used his position as Chairman of the Social Security Subcommittee to bring attention to the fiscal nightmare the program currently faces and to generate a bipartisan discussion on how the program can be made solvent for future

Having remained faithful allies in the fight to achieve real progress on these issues, AMAC was proud to present the AMAC Award to these deserving men. AMAC will continue to support Rep. Johnson and Sen. Hatch as they battle for responsible reforms that will stand the test of time and promise to make America stronger for future generations.

generations of Americans. On the Senate side, Sen. Hatch has introduced legislation to help Americans better save for retirement and to reign in out-of-control government spending. AMAC’s mission to make America stronger is one that undoubtedly resonates with many working in the historic, ornate chambers of the U.S. Congress today. Support for this mission was on clear display at the AMAC reception, where approximately 100 people turned out to express their sincere appreciation for the values and principles on which AMAC firmly stands. Pleased to hear of

the massive advocacy campaign AMAC has launched in Washington, many lawmakers and staffers conveyed their eagerness to partner with the fastestgrowing alternative seniors organization to turn our vision of a stronger America into a reality. This Congressional reception provided a unique opportunity for AMAC

to engage directly with policy makers on issues of importance to mature Americans. In the coming months, AMAC will continue to work off the energy generated by the reception, as we forge new partnerships with Congressional offices and strengthen existing relationships with Constitution-committed lawmakers. As a members-driven organization whose agenda is solely defined by the individuals we represent, AMAC remains fully dedicated to you and to the issues that matter greatly to Americans – especially to the seniors of today and tomorrow. You can count on AMAC to be part of the solution Washington needs!

■ A LAND TOUR: 7 Days from Rome to Venice

Rome: Discover Historic Ancient Ruins Your exciting tour begins in historic Rome, set amidst the glorious backdrop of ancient ruins. You’ll be greeted to a welcome dinner with wine at a specially selected local restaurant. Commence your sightseeing with a guided tour of The Colosseum of Rome, the large amphitheater where deadly combat of gladiators and wild animals took place long ago. Built to hold 50,000 spectators, it was commissioned by Emperor Vespasian and later completed by his son in AD 80. Just outside is the Arch of Constantine, a 25 m high monument built in AD 315 to mark Constantine’s victory over Maxentius. Stop at the Vatican Museums, resonating with history, art, culture and faith. Step inside the Sistine Chapel, location for Papal Conclaves and important Catholic services. The Chapel of the Apostolic Palace is well-known for Michelangelo’s High Renaissance artwork on the ceiling and wall frescos. St. Peter’s Square, the massive plaza located in front of St. Peter’s Basilica, is a mustsee destination along your tour. There,

you’ll observe the 2,000 year old redgranite Egyptian obelisk. Walk along the lines of travertine, as you stand facing St. Peter’s Basilica, known as “the greatest of all Churches of Christendom.” This Late Renaissance church is a crowned jewel of Vatican City, regarded as one of the holiest sites of the Catholic religion.

Florence: Explore the Cradle of Italian Culture Let scenic Italian countryside lead your way to Florence, capital city of the Italian region of Tuscany. Tuscany is located in central Italy and stretches from the Apennines to the Tyrrhenian Sea. The ancient city of Florence, cradle of Italian language and culture, offers many

treasures in architecture, religious buildings, squares, gardens, and monuments. Picturesque Florence lies in the basin of the Senese Clavey Hills, with the Arno and three minor rivers flowing through the town. The majority of the city was built during the Renaissance, with the historic center offering much old-world charm. The Gothic style domed cathedral of Santa Maria del Fiore stands as a symbol of religious faith and architectural beauty. Relax in a lovely Florence hotel, complete with gracious accommodations. Set your sights on adventure on a guided walking tour to observe the statue of David, which Renaissance artist Michelangelo created between 1501 and 1504 to represents the Biblical hero. Originally placed in the city’s most

important square near the seat of the government, the marble statue is currently conserved in the Academy Gallery. A replica replaces the original one in the L-shaped Signoria Square.

Venice: Embrace history, beauty & romance. Complete your land tour in the northeastern city of Venice, capital of the Veneto region. Titled “Queen of the Adriatic,” this floating city is considered to be one of the most beautiful man-made places in the world. Experience stunning visuals as you board a private boat for your personal tour of this romantic location. A guided walking tour with historical interpretations awaits your visit.

Explore St. Mark’s Square, constructed in the 9th century, and the magnificent St. Mark’s Basilica. Nicknamed “Church of Gold” due to its opulence, the Basilica is the seat of the Patriarch of Venice, archbishop of the Roman Catholic Archdiocese of Venice. Explore Doge’s Palace, dating to the early 15th century, the Palace was residence to the supreme authority of the Republic of Venice. Enjoy posing for photographs beside one of the most famous bridges which connects Doge’s Palace to prisons of the 16th century which lie across the canal. The Bridge of Sighs, built of limestone in 1600, is an enclosed bridge adorned in ornamental decorations. Learn the legends of the bridge and of its reference in poet Lord Byron’s 1812 book. Culminate your travel to Venice with a live glass-blower demonstration with surprise gift, followed by a farewell drink at Italy’s oldest café. When folic acid is taken one month before conception and throughout the first trimester, it has been proven to reduce the risk for neural tube defects by 50 to 70 percent. A Party in Progress! Hosting a Progressive Dinner

A

progressive party? It’s a party where each successive course is eaten at a different host’s house. The guests progress from house to house for this three stop shindig and each host prepares and serves one course – cocktails / appetizers, main course and dessert. All of the guests arrive at the first house for appetizers, move together to the next house for the main course, and then once again for dessert. These parties were considered hip and innovative in the 1950s, and have experienced a resurgence in this time of casual entertaining because it’s an ingenious way to throw a fun and elegant party, and only do a third of the work.

Select 3 hosts. This concept works best if all of the hosts live in the same neighborhood, apartment building or condo complex. This minimizes travel time, and allows guests to walk from house to house. If the hosts live further apart, be sure to appoint designated drivers, if needed.

Form a guest list taking into account the size of the hosts’ homes and especially how many the main course host can seat. If you choose to invite a larger group, consider having two main course hosts. The group can start the evening together for the appetizer course, divide into two groups for the entrée course and come together again for coffee and dessert.

Set a time table that lists each course, its location, and the time that each visit will begin and end. Make sure to consider travel time between the homes. A 4-hour event is ideal. This allows an hour at the appetizer and dessert stops, 1 ½ hours at the main course stop, and 15 minutes travel time between stops.

Consider a theme. Seasonal or holiday. Italian, Mexican, French or other ethnic fare.

Set the table before you leave home to minimize any last minute scrambling when guests arrive.

Prepare foods that can be kept hot until needed, that are served cold, or can be made in advance and reheated quickly. See the “Make Ahead” instructions included with each suggested recipe.

If you are hosting the entrée or dessert courses, leave the prior home a little early to get a head start on any last minute preparations.

Pear, Blue Cheese & Walnut Salad ❏ 1/3 cup ketchup ❏ ½ cup white vinegar ❏ ¾ cup sugar ❏ 2 tsp. salt ❏ 1 cup vegetable oil ❏ 3 heads romaine lettuce chopped

❏ 6 oz. crumbled blue cheese ❏ 3 ripe pears – peeled, cored and diced ❏ ¾ cup coarsely chopped walnuts – toasted ❏ ½ red onion - chopped

In a small bowl, combine ketchup, vinegar, sugar and salt. Gradually whisk in oil until well-blended. In a large serving bowl, mix together lettuce, blue cheese, pears, walnuts and red onion. Pour dressing over salad and toss to coat. Serves 8. *To make ahead: Prepare and refrigerate dressing. Chop and toast walnuts – set aside. Chop lettuce and onion. Store in separate containers in the refrigerator. Just before serving, peel, core and chop pears. Toss all ingredients in a large bowl. Serve the salad first - allowing extra time for the coq au vin and potatoes to reheat.

Kathie’s Kitchen Snowy Mashed Potato Casserole ❏ 4 lbs. potatoes (12 medium) ❏ 1 – 8 oz. cream cheese softened ❏ 1 – 8 oz. sour cream ❏ 1 clove garlic, crushed

❏ 2 tsp. salt ❏ 1/8 tsp. pepper ❏ 1/2 tsp. paprika ❏ 1 Tbs. butter

Cook potatoes in boiling, salted water until tender. Drain. Place potatoes back into the pot along with the cream cheese, sour cream, garlic, salt and pepper. Beat with an electric mixer at high speed until smooth and light. Spoon into a lightly greased, shallow baking dish. Sprinkle with paprika. Dot with butter. Bake in a 350 degree oven for 20 minutes or until lightly golden and heated through. Serves 8. *To make ahead: Cover and refrigerate uncooked casserole. Before heading out for the appetizer course, remove casserole from the refrigerator and allow to come to room temperature. Bake in 350 degree oven for 20 – 30 minutes or until lightly golden and heated through.

Ice Cream Puffs with Chocolate Sauce Coq au Vin ❏ 5 slices thick cut bacon – diced ❏ 8 skinless, boneless chicken thighs ❏ 2 medium onions – cut into wedges ❏ 3 cloves garlic - smashed ❏ 8 oz. mushrooms – sliced ❏ 2 cups dry white wine

❏ 3 sprigs fresh thyme ❏ 2 – 3 cups chicken stock ❏ 3 Tbs. flour ❏ 2 Tbs. butter – softened ❏ 1 - 14 oz. can quartered artichokes - drained ❏ 2 Tbs. chopped fresh parsley

In a heavy-bottomed Dutch oven, cook bacon over medium-high heat until crisp. Remove bacon and set aside. In the same pot, brown chicken thighs on both sides (chicken will not be cooked through at this point). Remove chicken and set aside. In the same pot, sauté onions, garlic and mushrooms until lightly browned. Remove and set aside. Pour wine into the pot, and bring to a boil, stirring and scraping all of the browned bits from the bottom. Return the bacon, chicken and vegetables. Add thyme and enough chicken stock to cover chicken. In a small bowl, blend flour and butter into a smooth paste. Whisk into the chicken mixture until well-combined. Add artichokes. Cover and simmer over medium-low heat for 30 minutes. Ladle off excess grease. Serve garnished with parsley. Serves 6 – 8. *To make ahead: Let cool. Refrigerate covered. Before heading out for the appetizer course, remove from the refrigerator and allow to come to room temperature. Reheat over medium heat. Serve garnished with parsley.

❏ 1 cup water ❏ 6 Tbs. butter ❏ ¼ tsp. salt ❏ 1 cup all-purpose flour ❏ 4 large, room temperature eggs ❏ 1 quart vanilla ice cream

❏ ¾ cup sugar ❏ ¼ cup unsweetened cocoa ❏ ½ cup heavy cream ❏ 3 Tbs. butter ❏ 1 tsp. vanilla ❏ pinch of salt

Preheat oven to 400 degrees. Grease and flour a large baking sheet. In a large saucepan, over medium heat, bring water, butter and salt to a boil and simmer until butter is melted. Remove saucepan from heat and vigorously stir in flour, all at once, until the mixture forms a ball and pulls away from the sides of the pan. Let rest and cool for 2 minutes. Add eggs, one at a time, beating well after each addition, until batter becomes smooth and satiny. Drop ¼ cups of batter 2 inches apart onto prepared baking sheet. You should have 10 mounds. Gently smooth the tops with a moistened fingertip. Bake 40 – 45 minutes or until puffs are a deep-golden brown. Remove from oven. Poke a hole in one side of each puff with a knife to allow steam to escape. Transfer puffs to a wire rack and cool completely. Meanwhile, in a small saucepan, stir together the sugar and cocoa. Add heavy cream and butter. Bring to a boil, stirring constantly, over medium heat. Simmer for 30 seconds. Remove from heat. Add vanilla and salt. To serve, slice each puff horizontally in half. Place a scoop of ice cream on the bottom half. Replace top half. Drizzle with warm chocolate sauce. Serves 10. *To make ahead: Store cooled puffs in an air-tight container, at room temperature, until ready to use. Cool prepared chocolate sauce. Store in the refrigerator. Assemble ice cream puffs and drizzle with reheated chocolate sauce.

t’s a problem no one likes to talk about, but over 25 million Americans suffer from urinary incontinence. For those people, the problem is embarrassing, uncomfortable and can lead to a variety of other health issues such as skin irritation. Now there’s an adult diaper that fully absorbs the liquid and pulls it away from the skin leaving little opportunity for skin irritation, or other incontinence-related problems. Plus for many, a good night’s sleep uninterrupted, leak-free is the best news of all. Adult diapers have been on the market for years, but because most are sold to hospitals, where frequent changing is not an issue, they simply have not been designed to last through the night. Night Proofs™ Briefs are–and they do!

Breakthrough technology converts phone calls to captions.

New amplified phone lets you hear AND see the conversation. The Captioning Telephone converts phone conversations to easy-to-read captions for individuals with hearing loss.

A simple idea… made possible with sophisticated technology. If you have trouble understanding a call, the Captioning Telephone can change your life. During a phone call the words spoken to you appear on the phone’s screen – similar to closed captioning on TV. So when you make or receive a call, the words spoken to you are not only amplified by the phone, but scroll across the phone so you can listen while reading everything that’s said to you. The captioning function can be turned on as needed. Each call is routed through a call center, where computer technology – aided by a live representative – generates immediate voice-to-text translations. The captioning is real-time, accurate and readable. Your conversation is private and the captioning service doesn’t cost you a penny – all you need is a high-speed Internet connection from any Internet provider and a standard phone line. Callers do not need special equipment or a captioning phone in order to speak with you.

Finally… a phone you can use again. The Captioning Telephone is also packed with features to help make phone calls easier. The keypad has large, easy to use buttons. You get adjustable volume amplification along with the ability to save captions for review later. It even has an answering machine that provides you with the captions of each message.

SEE what you’ve been missing! See for yourself with our exclusive home trial. Try the Captioning Telephone in your own home and if you are not completely amazed, simply return it within 30-days for a refund of the product purchase price. It even comes with a 5-year warranty.

For many Americans the telephone conversation – once an important part of everyday life – has become a thing of the past. Because they can’t understand what is said to them on the phone, they’re often cut off from friends, family, doctors and caregivers. Now, thanks to innovative technology there is finally a better way.

Please mention promotion code 47245.

The Captioning Telephone is intended for use by people with hearing loss. In purchasing a Captioning Telephone, you acknowledge that it will be used by someone who cannot hear well over a traditional phone.

Old Cookbook Reveals

“Amazing Details of Washington’s Dining Habits”

by Guy Coalter, Special Features Writer

Canton OH, Special - With hundreds of servants at her command... a person would think our first First Lady was a woman of leisure. Not so... according to a new historical discovery. A long out-of-print volume entitled, “The Martha Washington Cook Book” shows Mrs. Washington personally supervised her entire household staff... and especially the kitchen and dining room servants. Martha made sure every dish served at Mount Vernon... as well as in the first Presidential “White Houses” in New York and Philadelphia... was prepared exactly as called for in her personal cookbook. The family cookbook was given to Martha at the time of her first marriage. In 1749, beautiful seventeen-year-old Martha Dandridge married Daniel Parke Custis. As a wedding gift, the Custis family presented Martha with a family cookbook entitled Booke of Cookery and Booke of Sweetmeats. Handwritten by an unknown hand, there is evidence the recipe book had been in the Custis family for generations. It is quite likely this was a family heirloom dating back to the early 1600s. In all, there were over five hundred classic recipes, dating largely from Elizabethan and Jacobean times, the golden age of English cookery. Later, Martha Custis became a widow and in 1759 she married Col. George Washington. Washington was to become the Father of our country and its first President. Martha, of course, became our very first, “First Lady.” Martha kept and used her family cookbook for over fifty years. In 1799, she presented the book to her granddaughter, Eleanor Parke Custis as a wedding gift when she married Lawrence Lewis. The cookbook was handed down from mother to daughter until 1892 when the Lewis family presented it to The Historical Society of Pennsylvania where it still resides today. In 1940, the Society gave permission to historian Marie Kimball to study the manuscript and prepare a cookbook entitled, “The Martha Washington Cook Book.” Although now long out-of-print,

an Ohio publisher was recently commissioned to reprint a limited edition of this rare and amusing piece of Americana. Accordingly, a limited number of copies are being made available to the public at this time. Each volume is numbered and when the present printing is exhausted, there is no contract to print more. These cookbooks could very easily become valuable collectors items.

Martha Washington “The Martha Washington Cook Book” includes facsimile copies of several actual pages from the one-of-a-kind original manuscript. Then, Mrs. Kimball chose over 200 delicious unique recipes from Martha Washington’s personal cookbook and completely modernized them so you can easily prepare them in your own kitchen! The original recipes were written for a huge household including numerous servants. Many called for dozens of eggs and gallons of one thing or another. Marie Kimball “trimmed” each recipe to quantities of ingredients for a family of six. You’ll get dozens of delicious recipes for Soups, Fish, Meats, Meat Pies, Poultry and Game, Sauces, Eggs - Mushrooms and Cheese, Fritters and Pancakes, Pastry Pies and Tarts, Cakes, Creams and Jellies, Puddings, Preserves, and Beverages.

Perhaps more interesting for us history buffs is the detailed description of the kitchen and dining habits in the George Washington household. Martha sat at the head of the table with her husband at her side to the right. Despite dozens of servants around the table, either Martha or George always carved the meats to be served! You’ll absolutely love dozens of other interesting details of this historical dining room. “The Martha Washington Cook Book” is a beautiful perfect bound book you will be proud to display on your coffee table, bookshelf, or where ever you keep your very best books. Your friends and neighbors are guaranteed to be envious... and you are guaranteed to be completely satisfied with your cookbook. You may examine and use it for a full three months and return it for a full no-questions-asked refund if you desire. Although not available in bookstores, you may order your cookbook directly from the publisher. There is a strict limit however, of only two copies per customer. To get your copy, simply write your name and address on a plain piece of paper. Mail it along with your remittance of only 19.95 plus $3.98 postage and handling (total of $23.93, OH residents please add 6.5% sales tax) payable to: James Direct Inc, Special Offer M813, 500 S. Prospect Ave., Box 980, Hartville, Ohio 44632. You may charge to VISA, MasterCard, Discover or American Express by including your card number, expiration date and signature. For even faster service, have your credit card handy and telephone toll-free 1-800-310-7610 and ask for Special Offer M813. Act within the next 15 days and the publisher will include a free bonus... a selection of delightful recipes from the personal cookbook of President Thomas Jefferson! “The Martha Washington Cookbook” makes an appreciated gift for any gift-giving occasion. Readers of this publication may request a second copy for only $6.07 postpaid. (Total of $30 ©2013 JDI M0139S06 for both.) http://www.jamesdirect.com

Joke of the Month A loving couple had two little boys, ages 8 and 10, who were just terrible kids always getting in trouble. Running out of ideas, they decided to look to the church. They heard that a clergyman in town had been successful in disciplining children in the past, so they called him, and he agreed to give it a shot. He asked to see the boys individually, so the eight-year-old was sent to meet with him first. The clergyman sat the boy down and asked him sternly, “Now where is God?” The boy made no response, so the clergyman repeated the question even louder, “Where is God!?” Again the boy made no attempt to answer, so the clergyman raised his voice even more and shook his finger in the boy’s face, “WHERE IS GOD!?” The boy suddenly ran out of the room, ran directly home, and slammed himself in his closet. His older brother followed him into the closet and said, “What happened?” The younger brother replied, “We are in a BIG mess of trouble this time. God has gone missing and they think WE did it!” Heard any good ones lately? Send them in!

Please submit your joke by emailing info@amac.us or mailing to Joke of the Month, c/o AMAC 5 Orville Drive, Suite 400, Bohemia, NY 11716. Your joke may be featured in our next magazine!

Did You Know? $1.3 Billion in “Improper” Federal Disability Payments The Social Security Administration made $1.3 billion in potentially improper disability payments to people who were believed to be employed when they were supposed to be unable to work, according to a Government Accountability Office report released in September. The precise number of individuals who received improper payments and the exact amount of improper payments made to those recipients cannot be determined without detailed case investigations, according to the report. The report comes as Social Security's disability program faces a financial crisis. If Congress doesn't act, the trust fund that supports the disability program will run out of money in 2016, according to projections by Social Security's trustees. At that point, the system will collect only enough money in payroll taxes to pay 80 percent of benefits, triggering an automatic 20 percent cut in benefits. "This report demonstrates just how little importance the Social Security Administration places on policing its disability rolls," said Sen. Tom Coburn of Oklahoma, the ranking Republican on the Senate Homeland Security and Governmental Affairs Committee. "SSA has known for years that it could prevent millions of dollars in improper disability payments using quarterly wage records, but chose not to." Do you think private enterprise would make these mistakes?

Hope for Migraine Sufferers For the more than 37 million Americans suffering from one of the most commonly-occurring vascular headache - migraine headaches - there is hope on the horizon. Reports from the National

Headache Foundation indicate that a treatment called neurostimulation is beginning to show promise in treating and relieving much of the chronic pain that afflicts migraine sufferers. Neurostimulation is a minimally invasive procedure in which leads are placed beneath the patient’s skin in proximity to nerves determined to be the source of headache pain. The mild electrical current delivered to these leads using a battery-powered implant, similar to a pacemaker, replaces the pain sensation with a massage-type sensation, bringing quick relief to the sufferer. So, for migraine sufferers, help is on the way!

Benzes behind when they hit the fairway? That's what Mercedes-Benz itself is asking, and its answer is their new golf cart design. The electric cart includes a solar panel on the roof to keep its battery pack topped up, and its center console includes touchscreen panels, iPhone dock and a joystick to control the vehicle in place of a conventional steering wheel. It also features a heads-up projection display for both vehicle and course information. In keeping with its reputation for safety features, Mercedes has even included a retractable lightning rod and a “fore button” that warns other players on the course through their own carts of a misplaced shot.
