Tips from Your AMAC Medicare Team The agents in the AMAC Medicare department speak with many members on a daily basis. They often hear of the same obstacles that seniors face when it is time to enroll into a Medicare plan.

n an effort to help our members with common issues that may arise, our agents have offered some tips and advice to help guide you.

Diana Wisniewski, VP of Compliance, recommends: “Always make sure your doctor is in network before signing up for a Medicare Advantage Plan. It is a good idea to make sure the plan has a rich network in your area, in the event that you need a specialist in the future.” “Always check your prescriptions before enrolling into a plan with Prescription Drug Coverage. Be sure to ask your agent about drug restrictions. There are three restrictions you should be informed about: quantity limits, step therapy, and prior authorization.”

Terry Hicks, Agent, says: “Don’t procrastinate or wait until the last minute to start looking for a Medicare plan.” “Don’t buy plans based on name recognition alone, know your options.”

Carl Hohsfield, Director of Sales, advises: “You must be enrolled in Medicare Part A and Part B in order to enroll into a Medicare Advantage Plan or a Medigap Plan.” “You have two months to enroll into a Medicare Advantage Plan or a Part D Plan after the month you lose your employer coverage.”

Sarah Stark, Agent, says: “While the supplement Plan F is the most comprehensive supplement plan, in many cases when it is compared to Plan G, it is not the most cost effective plan.”

“Remember, if your prescriptions change, you do have the option to shop for a new Prescription Drug Plan every year during the Annual Enrollment Period, between Oct. 15 and Dec. 7th.”

Colleen Joosten, Agent, advises: “You can go onto medicare.gov and at the top it says ‘Is my test, item or service covered?’ Here you can enter any type of service to see what Medicare pays.” “When shopping for a plan, have your prescriptions ready.”

Gary Lambert, Agent, recommends: “My suggestion would be to start looking into plans sooner rather than later. There is a lot of information to go through and the more time you have the more likely you are to understand your options and be satisfied with your choices.” “It’s ok to ask friends and family what plans they have, but remember that each person’s needs are different and what is good for them might not be good for you.”

Ed Babits, Training Specialist, says: “If you have a Medicare Supplement plan, you can go to any provider that accepts Medicare.” “Common items or services not covered by Medicare are: Long Term Care, Acupuncture, Hearing Aids, Dentures, routine Dental and Vision.”

Larry Lucchetti, Agent, says: “Don’t judge a Medicare Advantage Plan based on premium alone. Make sure you know what the out of pocket expenses are including deductibles, co-pays, and maximum out of pocket.” “Understand the benefits of using a preferred pharmacy with your Part D Plan. With Part D Plans a preferred pharmacy

will offer you prescription drugs at a lower cost than what you would pay at a nonpreferred pharmacy.”

Diana Jordan, Team Leader, recommends: “Medicare Advantage Plans and Medicare Supplement Plans are NOT the same.” “Do not give your banking and Medicare information to someone who has called you. All enrollments must be done on a call placed by you to the insurance agent or company.”

Marie Morana, Agent, advises: “One thing that has happened numerous times is that members think when they enroll in AMAC they are enrolling into a Medicare Supplement Plan. Some have even canceled their former plan. Please know that becoming an AMAC member does not automatically provide you with insurance coverage. You must apply for that separately.”

Greg Keiffert, Agent, says: “Check back each year with your agent during the Annual Enrollment Period, to make sure the Prescription Drug Plan you are currently on is favorable to your current prescriptions.” The agents in AMAC’s Medicare department hope that you find value in their tips and advice. ifty-two percent of retirees surveyed said they’re pulling money out of their retirement accounts simply “as the need arises,” according to a survey of 1,206 adults aged 35 to 75. The danger is running out of money later, when you’re much older and least able to rectify the situation. About half of the retirees surveyed said they’re worried about exactly that — running out of money — and 63% are concerned that Social Security or pensions won’t cover their retirement expenses.

How to create retirement income So, what are your options for creating income from your retirement savings?

There’s no one right way for everybody. The best strategy for you will depend on your specific financial situation, including the tax implications of where your savings are sitting (e.g. a pre-tax IRA, an after-tax bank or investment accounts), how long you expect to live, pension income, social security income, whether you’re hoping to leave money to heirs, and most importantly how those assets are being managed. A central question most retirees ask about asset allocation: what mix of stocks and bonds is going to generate enough money to live on for the rest of their lives? While a common rule of thumb has been to invest your age in bonds and 100-minusyour-age in stocks, that rule may be upended by long-term trends, including

the prospect of higher interest rates slamming bonds, as well as longer life spans. Now that retirement may last 25 or 30 years, you may want to retain a higher portion in stocks, some advisers say. The real answer to this question is not what your asset allocation should look like based on your age or how long your retirement years will last, but what should it look like based on the current economic environment. A static asset allocation lends itself to overexposure to market volatility. Retirement assets whether they are pre-tax or after tax dollars, should strive for both growth and more importantly, consistency over time.

Gold! A Mid-Year Update As of late June 2014, gold traded at $1315 per ounce, up almost 10% for the ﬁrst half of 2014. In mid-March, global tensions in Crimea pushed gold to $1385. Gold then fell to $1250, but June’s war in Iraq helped to push gold back above $1300.

hat does the second half hold in store for gold? Here are five market fundamentals and a wild card, any one of which could fuel a significant rise in the gold price in the second half of 2014.

Fundamental #1: The CALENDAR Gold is a meaningful investment in modern times, but it is also a gift of love since ancient times. The world’s major gift-giving holidays come from September through February, beginning with Ramadan in the Muslim world, then the Indian wedding season, and then Christmas in the west. After the New Year begins, 1.4 billion Chinese celebrate their lunar New Year, while the west celebrates Valentine’s Day. To prepare for these holidays, jewelers must order gold for fabrication several months in advance. That’s why September is gold’s best historical month, followed by November and December. In fact, the last four months of the year have accounted for nearly two-thirds of gold’s gains over the last 40+ years.

Fundamental #2: CHINA China is the world’s #1 gold producer and consumer. So far this year, China, India and the world’s central banks are buying about 90% of all the gold mined

in the world, up from 80% last year. The World Gold Council’s annual Gold Demand report, released in April, said that China’s physical gold demand in 2013 showed the largest annual increase since the WGC began keeping records. China’s demand was a record 1,132 tonnes last year. The WGC projects another 5% increase in demand this year, to 1,186 tonnes. (Note: A tonne, or metric ton, is equal to one million grams, or 32,150 Troy ounces, or 2,205 pounds.)

Fundamental #3: INDIA Before 2013, India was the world’s leader in gold demand, but the Indian government passed punitive tariffs in early 2013, stifling the gold trade and contributing to gold’s sharp price drop in 2013. However, in late May 2014, Narendra Modi won a landslide election as India’s new prime minister. Modi is in favor of reducing India’s onerous gold restrictions. Haresh Soni, Chairman of the All India Gem & Jewelry Traders’ Federation, told reporters that Modi “understands the problems we have been facing over the last 12 months” and that “he will solve our issues.” With so much pent up demand, we could see a huge influx of gold purchases in India by late 2014.

Fundamental #4: Central Banks In late May, the World Gold Council reported that central banks bought 122.4 tonnes of gold in the first quarter of 2014. That works out to an annual rate of nearly 500 tonnes vs. only 409 tonnes for total central bank gold demand in 2013, according to the World Gold Council.

Fundamental #5: Shrinking Supply When the price of gold kept rising each year from 2001 to 2011, many mining companies explored for gold in remote places with small gold deposits, in the belief that gold would keep rising to $2000 and beyond. With gold prices now around $1300, many of those properties are no longer economical to mine. Since 2001, the average gold content per tonne of ore has fallen from 2.5 grams to under 1.7 grams. In 2010 there were six gold discoveries that promised two million ounces of gold or more, but in 2011 there was only one and in the last two years, none. It’s harder and harder to find economical gold deposits.

Wild Card: ETF Demand So far in 2014, the Wall Street crowd has stayed out of gold. Gold holdings in ETFs have been flat at around 800 tonnes so far in 2014, but the Wall Street herd invests in what’s “hot.” They dump what’s cold. If gold should turn hot, the Wall Street crowd could quickly jump again on the gold bandwagon.
